Sprint service center cannot downgrade your phone

Well after a little discussion yesturday in the root thread about whether or not sprint can downgrade your phone after the 2.1 update I went ahead and called them and they said that it could be done. I actually called first to the sprint service center and they said it could be done. So I went down there today and talked in person to the tech and he told me that it can't be done. So wasted an hour case closed

just a thought, but if the guys here havent figured out how to downgrade hboot, what makes anyone think that sprint would be able to?

They have the source, and release keys. They can do whatever they want like make you wait six months for a very terrible update just to make you buy a new phone and then blame it on the hardware the same hardware that's going into the mytouch slide which will be running froyo. But the consumers don't know any better so they just buy a new phone

I have been there, the told me it can't be done so i made radioshack give me a new phone since i really wasn't happy with the 2.1

If I wasn't giving it to my girlfriend tomorrow then I would send it to them and have them "fix it" or give me a new one I still got the box they sent me but i figure its not worth the hassle I still got one with root.

Whats wrong with the update, other than it can't be rooted??? Its faster and smoother than 1.5, plus it has weather animations, etc...Whats so terrible??? I think the only ones that aren't happy are the ones who updated to the RUU without finding out what it would do IE: not rootable and those who had their phones replaced and got the new RUU without the ability to root......Since 99% of users don't root, Most won't really care...............

I can't stand the goddamn weather animations. Makes my phone unresponsive to touch when it first wakes up, and I can't figure out how to turn them off.

delete the clock widget, and when you add it again, after choosing clock style then city, it gives you the option to check full screen animations, just uncheck it.

Yeah I'm not a fan of them either would rather have live wallpapers. "Oh my god it's gonna be cloudy and I know cuz clouds just rolled across my screen" . Yeah ridiculous.

So much I can say but I just llike to have the option of taking and removing what I like (Hate sprint nascar) personalizing icons and so fourth a2sd.......... I could go on but really froyo and gingerbread is all I really need to say

Basically what the other guy said, u not being able to root is the reason ur throwing a tantrum. Nothing is wrong with the update but the ability to do something that its normally forbidden.

First you post about wanting something that's normally forbidden...aka ROOT !
Then you just post and tell him "Maybe a fix will come up if u ever get to root ur phone "
So what is it?....... you like root or it disgusts you? Can't have it both ways.
And the ability to USE bluetooth with a new phone, either rooted or NORMALLY the way it should be is EXPECTED when we pay for them.
But I'm sure the guy welcomes your SOL attitude......

My phones rooted buddy. I'm talking about the OP complaining because he says 2.1 sucks because he can't do functions that root allow him to do. Reading comprehension > u
As far as my attitude, nothing wrong with my attitude. Some things are NOT compatible with others, plain and simple. Doesn't matter what phone you pay for, it does not mean every bluetooth ever invented will be compatible with the phone. You pay for the phone service, and you have phone service. Your cars bluetooth doesn't work with it? Sorry, i'm sure HTC wasn't thinking PRIUS when they made 2.1.
As a worker for Sprint I hate coming to these forums and hearing people complain about things that have nothing to do with Sprint and then reading about how they can "cheat" Sprint or how disgusted they are with them when it's not even Sprint. Why am I disgusted you ask? Cause all the BS customers that constantly complain come to my department (retention). I don't care what ppl do with their stuff, but don't complain when it's not needed.

Okay first things first I have two phones one with root one without. So this issue is just something that got out of hand. Just gonna touch on some things:

Actually I was quite calm when I wrote that. All I hear is blah blah blah. I like how you try to put yourself in a higher position than me by demeaning me and overexaggerating my statements to twist them into what you want people to think I meant.

Okay the only reason that I posted this was to stop the conversation in the root section. Also to confirm that sprint service centers can't downgrade the bootloader. Second thing I want to touch on is when I did this there were no fake or harassing conversations with employees I was very polite. Why would I be a **** to people that I go out of my way to look for reasons to talk to? Them and tmobile reps. Also I bought phone insurance from radioshack and was promised everything under the sun and told the guy how finnicky I am about my phone and was straight up honest with him and things that were likely to happen to it. You know what he said, "it's okay there's ways around that kind of stuff to get it handled". Now I'm out 125 and I could get a new phone through their policy got the box sitting about three maybe four feet from me but I'm not gonna.
By the way sprint does suck. They aren't as bad as at&t. And before you say why not leave them. Because I can't right because for other reasons that our my business

Do not install second update!!!!

I first reported this morning that after the first OTA update, a second update became available and was downloaded by my phone. I did not install it because I was noit sure what it was...and I am glad I didn't! This update appears to BRICK phones, so beware of this second update and DON'T INSTALL IT!!!!

Brick rooted phones? Mines completely stock, will it be bricked? If it does get bricked can I get a new Evo?

Don't download an OTA update if your rooted. pretty simple. You won't download an update for a patched piece of software

Uhm, no. Because there are no Evos to be had, so you can brick your Evo all you want but you won't get a new Evo.

Of course he will, as long as Sprint can confirm he didn't break his warranty. They'll give him a new one when their new shipment comes in. After all, it would be their fault and they would have to provide a replacement.

Second update? I did the ota update my evo works even better now! But I didn't get a second update

A friend said something about seeing it when he re-searched for an update. Not sure if others are getting a prompt or what not after initial update.
Also bumping so it's nearer to the top.

Yeah, I'm not getting an option for a second update. Maybe it's only area based.

It's not a new update its the same one and if you reply yes your definitely gonna get a brick Sprint messed up lol bringing back the old Samsung instinct days lol

if you got the first one, install it, if you got a second one, don't. easy

what i did was uninstall all apps requiring su then uninstalled unrevoked and the restarted and shut off anything that didnt have to be running and updated...so far no problems short of having to reload a couple of widgets, i cant seem to get back to regular android launcher though
a friend of mine updated with unrevoked still installed and his phone made it through but it hung for about 20 min and i had to take the phone from him because he was ready to remove the battery, his sister had wifi running and after update it wouldnt start, my cousin turned off wifi before updating and his wifi seems fine...

Does anyone have a "bricked" phone? I'm curious as to whether it's a true brick or if recovery/bootloader can still be reached. As far as I can tell it's only rooted phones having these problems, I'm also wondering if people are pulling their batteries. Reports are saying that normal unrooted customers are saying their phones were "bricked", but I'm sure there's a lot of people that were rooted trying to get theirs replaced that aren't going to admit that they were rooted.

since someone in my inner-circle designated me as tech support i have a lot of people calling me, i just had a somewhat akward convo with a friend ending... root?? whats root, i dont even know what that **** is....*background* um dad..... yeah safe to say if you have an expensive phone and a competent kid with access and general knowledge of general electronics keep your phone away from them

I have a normal, unrooted EVO 4G paperweight. Won't boot at all. Dead.

YUP same here, normal EVO, installed second update and BOOM, will not turn on, went to near sprint store and order new one at no cost, should be getting it tuesday or wed.

Paranoid about the warranty!

Just got my Epic 4G a few days ago and I'm already itching to root it, but I'm paranoid about the warranty. Sprint rep told me that they were anal about it and it would void it.
I used to have a Nexus One with T-Mobile and I was flashing new ROMs and kernels almost every day. I've always been a 'nerd' so I know what it all means and how to do it... but there's that lingering warranty in my mind. I was worried about it at first on my Nexus One, but eventually rooted and unlocked the bootloader even though I knew it meant the warranty went byebye.
Can someone offer me some piece of mind? Are these things easy to un-root? Is there any way that a Sprint tech could find out if it was ever rooted should I ever need to take advantage of the warranty?
I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure if it's worth it. I am not going to flash custom ROMs (yes, I miss FroYo, but I'm content)... the only reason I'm interested in rooting is for things like AdFree, Juice Defender, and removing stock apps.
Thoughts?

Nothing to worry about... If you have to take your phone back to the store just Odin back to stock and problem solve. Everything is on the Wiki.

exactly! I took my epic in back in November to complain about battery management issue I was having and to swap out for a new one. I told the rep what a bummer it was that I had to re-install all my apps and he said
"naw man, you can just save everything on your sd card no problem. that's what its there for!"
to which I replied, "only on froyo, and only if you install the leaked dk28 build"

Yeah they don't even know.if a phone is rooted or not. Besides just like people aid previously just use Odin and it.flashes it.back to stock. Its a lifesaver sometimes.

Some older phones used to have flash counters, and I don't know if the epic has one. Typically they are buried deep in inaccessible areas and I doubt that any sprint store would have the wherewithal to get at it. I'm sure that Samsung could probably tell, but when Sprint sends them back they just throw them in a big box. The point of accountability is at the store where you exchange for another one. So either odin back to stock or short out the hardware and sprint will be none the wiser.

Yeah, there is actually a code that you can bring up to see if the phone is a refurb'd or not. I did that on mine and it was definately new.

I did too and with the code check it shows new but hey do you believe that I don't cuz if we can make the phone looks unrooted with Odin they can make their own phone to appear as brand new.

just got a replacement EVO with FROYO on it!

So I recently got the EVO, and mine came with the 2.3 update. after reading here i realized there was NO root exploit for me. so I thought I would see if Sprint could use one of their magic machines and somehow downgrade my device to 2.2.
Keep in mind, I went in NOT trying to get a replacement device! I was NOT trying to commit fraud of any sort.
So I talked with a guy at the local sprint store about a couple issues i am having, no wireless N, BT is sporadic, adn about twice a day i get a Data Call Error message screen...
the guy asked me if I had taken the update and I said yes I have both the GB update and the maintenance update, but am still having my slight issues...
He looked at my account and told me since I had TEP he would just replace my device. Ummm.. Ok. I was actually just hoping you could downgrad it back to 2.2. Nope, they cant do that... So he went into the back and dug through the cabinet that had the Evo's in it and got me one from the very back.
after booting it up, he showed me it had 2.2 on it!! YAY!!! I( CAN ROOT AGAIN!!
Im just so stoked I had to share my good news.

I'm shocked they had one there. I have been waiting for 5 days for mine just to ship. Backordered which is weird to me since this is the most popular phone sprint has ever sold. I would think they would have plenty with all the warranty and assurion exchanges. Keeping my fingers crossed that mine will have Froyo also.

Shocked they had an Evo or shock they had one with Froyo? they had plenty of Evo's... so did the reseller that I originally got my sprint service through last week.

I have had my Evo replaced three times including this one now and I have never gotten a replacement on site. They always have to get it shipped out to me. Having froyo on the phone doesn't shock me because I have friends with Evo's and if I didn't tell them there was an update they would never even know to check.

nope, it was brand new, not a refurb or return. But don't worry, not all my luck is good today... I just heard a crash and a kid start crying outside, when i looked turns out a kid was learning how to ride a bike in our community parking lot and ran straight into the side of my 86 Mustang....

Wow, I would be pissed, but then again, I would've root.
Me, I feel stupid, I got service last week and had a rootable EVO, I just didn't know there wasn't a way to root the updates so I installed them because I wanted to test it out with the stock first. Came here the next day to check for rooting procedures to find out I fk myself!

Just did similar this morning....bought an Evo 4G for wifey, 3d for myself last friday. Went back to Best Buy and told them hers was acting up, wanted to exchange. No problem...then told the tech I'd like to power it on & update it myself at home...they were fine with that. Cancelled the update, and have a minty fresh Evo 4G with 2.2, now rooted and about to flash some Kingdom.

Got my sensation with 2.2 (didnt even know that was possible?) Didn't care for root then, so I did the GB... Now I feel like I fk'ed myself... Wellwell, waiting on root, with a smile on my face now, as I realised that "cut the rope" STILL is an amazing game

Trust me, I RUU'd the crap outta it. as stated, Hboot wont allow the downgrade. I tried about 5 different RUU files.

Phones speaker, yet again, went out.
Took phone to best buy, rooted with a custom rom on it. Think it was Fresh 4.2 or something I don't remember tbh.
Get phone back and it's all manufactured and has latest update.
From what I've read, no root for it yet.

Well, if we can get HTC to roll another small update out for us for the bad timezone and other small bugs... maybe they'll unlock the boot loader for us. :-D Send HTC saying your timezone is messed up. :-D

If it happens again, just buy a new speaker off eBay. They're really easy to swap out and cheap as hell. Just look on you tube for a walk-through.

not terribly worried about it. i plan on switching to the BB Bold 9930 when it comes out to Sprint in a couple months.
I got my Evo4g, because my previous job had hours upon hours of down time. So SNESoid and many other games filled that void and made my work day enjoyable. New job...can't even take my phone into the building, at all =( So all I need my phone now is just text and email. I could probably just get a dumb flip phone really. But I couldn't do that after having a smartphone for a few years now.

Is it your same phone? Check your bootloader to see if it is still s-off. You may get lucky and still be able to install a custom recovery.

ha, not sure why I didn't think of that.
i jsut assumed it was a new phone, sticker under battery now says 'remanufactured' and the screen doesnt have the scratch it had before and the camera lens is brand new looking.
