So,
I have been back and forth with BELL And HTC on the issue concerning incoming and outgoing calls which sound like some weird kind of Alien Frequency and the response below is so far what I got back from HTC.
Two other issues I brought up and yet addressed: The phone automatically turning off and rebooting during text messages. Both claim to be addressing the issue now but still pointing fingers at eachother. Due to the formatting and such read from the bottom up for order.
<------------------------------------------------------------>
Dear Matt,
Thank you for your response.
If there is a software glitch that is causing the issue, a soft reset and factory reset are required troubleshooting for these types of issues. I guarantee this was not a generic response and a factory reset fixes a lot of issues. I have seen that performing two or three factory resets have resolved the issue when just one had not.
Now, as for tracking purposes, we are going to escalate this to our higher ups and see if we can perform more research on this issue to see if we can find the problem. A usual escalation involves the information being sent to the Escalations Team and then they contact the customer to help resolve the issue over the phone. In this case, we are trying to discover what is going wrong. I do not know if they will try to contact you or not, but I wanted to get your contact information just in case.
As for Bell, we do not know for sure if the issue is with the network. All of the issues you are experiencing are typical network related issues. However, we would like to look into this further to see if we can fix it.
I have successfully escalated this issue for you.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 11***************.

Thank you for the reply again. I am still confused how this can be a network issue as I have had BELL as my carrier (not that I am saying they are not to blame at all) for years and this has never happened or been an issue until I bought this phone. My friends with Samsungs and Iphones on BELL's network are not having this issue. Also, with the phone turning off completely at random times and also during text messages is a clear indication the PHONE(s) are not constructed properly and have a serious widespread issue internally or technologically with them. I still don't see how any of these issues relate to BELL's network. This phone showed so much promise. When you say 'Tracking purposes' can you clarify that? Also, if it is not provision properly on BELL's network than why are HTC and BELL working together if components of their products conflict? Also, why was I routed to a generic response to factory reboot my phone instead when HTC knew that wasn't and isn't going to fix the issue? Don't think I am upset with you personally as I am not, But why didn't HTC address the problem the first email instead of sending off a generic useless one to think I'll go away. My information is below and I would like a little more indepth description as to what is going to happen moving forward? Is HTC actually trying to figure this out or white washing it? 'IF' by some reason it is BELL's network than why isn't HTC setting them straight and getting the ball rolling in fixing a problem which is damaging the respectability of the company with its stance on quality?

Thank you for your response. I have spoken with the escalations department. They said that there is not much we can do since this is happening with multiple phones and the only consistent variable is the network. I know you said you replaced the SIM card, but the SIM card might be fine, but not provisioned properly on Bell’s network. However, I have been given permission to escalate this case for tracking purposes so that we can look into the matter further. Please provide the following information: Mobile number Contact number (preferably a landline) Preferred contact time (I do not know if they will contact you, but they might if they need to gather more information from you) ROM version (go to Home, Menu, Settings, About Phone, Software Information, I will need the software number, and the Android version)

Hi, I have did factory resets and soft resets multiple times before. This isn't a single HTC Desire Z issue - If you read the complaint above instead of copying and pasting a generic response you would understand this is a serious issue with HTC Desire Z phones and an update for the phone to correct this problem is a must and as a company claiming to be responsible and about quality I expected a better response from you. Especially a response where you addressed my issue above by ACTUALLY reading it first. I would like this response addressed and forwarded to Headoffice please. I clearly stated '- I have tried factory resetting my device. I have had my phone replace three times with Bell, my SD Card Replaced, My Batteries, My SIM Card etc.' And than you send me a generic response to do this again? HTC has failed its customers and this is a huge disappointment. I will not be purchasing your brand again and will let anyone interested in my phone when they see it to know it is garbage and the company doesn't care to address and fix an issue which they seem to be ignoring. I am disgusted with this response and this email just made Apple and the Iphone more respectable as I will eventually be switching over because HTC chooses to ignore their customers complaints when one of their most franschised and newest phones is a dud with 1992 type problems. Your failed to address my issue, you failed to address the problem, you failed to read my comments and complaints I initially sent, you failed to take the right course of action, and failed to acknowledge you made a faulty phone. This is not a BELL problem. This is a hardware, software issue with HTC - You phone messes up calls, It turns off randomly, it blacks out the screens randomly. These are PHONE ISSUES. Also, one last thing to note is that this company is showing its lack of a ability to work with the companies that carry their phones. This must be the worst business partnership I've ever witnessed - It is like to siblings blaming eachother to gain attention of mommy and daddy. It's embarrassing This time through.. Read my comment and address them accordinly, alright. And HTC needs to admit they built a phone with issues and recall or create an update to fix this problem just like Apple does or the Auto Industry does. Because you are losing credibility and deserve too
Sincerly, Once a customer and loyal to HTC

Dear Matt,
I understand how important it is for your device to function properly. You will need to perform a soft reset. To perform a soft reset simply power off the device and remove the battery for 30 seconds. You will also need to remove any third party applications you may have on the device. Third party applications can sometimes conflict with the operating system of the device and can cause problems with normal functions or other applications.
If after soft resetting and removing third party applications and you are still having issues, you will need to perform a factory reset. Please note that this procedure will delete all personal data, customizations, and files from your DesireZ, so be sure to perform a full backup prior to beginning.
1. If you can’t turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
2. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
3. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button.
4. Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button.
If resetting the device is too difficult by pressing so many buttons at once, you can also reset the phone by clearing the storage on the device.
1. From the Home screen, press MENU, and then tap Settings.
2. Tap SD & phone storage > Factory data reset.
3. On the Factory data reset screen, tap Reset phone, and then tap Erase everything.
If the factory reset does not resolve your issues, there may be something physically wrong with the device and it will need to be repaired. You will need to speak to the Bell Repair Center for more information on having your device repaired. Their contact information is 1-800-667-0123, 8A.M. – 9 P.M. ET, Monday through Friday. They will be able to answer any questions you have about the warranty and repair process.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 11*******************.

(this message I used a previous HTC users complaint which I copied and paste with my own changes and this was also sent to both BELL and HTC)
Dear HTC/BELL,
I am experiencing the alien noise / dropped calls issue that the users in the below forum posts are referring to with my HTC Desire Z.
community.htc.com/.../38066.aspx
Periodically when I call others and/or when others call me, the other end hears static (alien frequency sounds) instead of hearing me. I on the other hand hear either dead air and or the person telling me my phone is messed up once again.
- This happens at minimum once a day and randomly and has happened since I got the phone about 2 months ago.
- I have had the phone completely replaced three times, the SIM card replaced, the SD card replaced and the Batteries replaced.
- This will happen on multiple calls until I reboot my phone.
- This has happened when connecting with mobile phones and/or land lines.
- I have tried factory resetting my device mulitple times (did nothing).
- When I reboot my phone (holding down the power button and selecting reboot) the problem goes away for X number of hours.
- This happens with full signal strength.
People on this forum (above) indicate that when calling HTC that the network is to blame and when calling Bell that HTC is to blame. Either way, there is an issue to be resolved and I have been caught in the middle of both companies blaming eachother. I am drastically losing respect for both these companies whom have their products overpriced when compared to the lack of usage you can get from them and the fact that both companies Customer Service departments are beyond terrible. My friends and families members who experience this issue when calling me have decided to not go with Bell and HTC phones and their reasoning is understandable and justifyable. I cannot even stick up for HTC when Iphone users make fun of it or Bell because of these issues. The issues with the calls are a huge distraction in my life as it's embarrassing when I speak with my co-workers, friends or family and have to explain to them why I keep hanging up on them or why it makes alien frequency type noises.
I would like an answer to this email and a resolution to my problem as not providing one is a clear indication that Bell/HTC as whole is just as bad as it customer service. I than will cancel my Bell account and go to Rogers.
List of problems with Bell -
- Overpriced phones like HTC Desire Z that don't work
- Unknowledgable Tech Support
- Unprofessional and bad Customer Service (Whom like to hang up calls FYI)
- Lack of support for issues
- Terrible signal coverage
etc ..
Any assistance you could provide would be appreciated. Hopefully Bell and HTC don't disappoint anymore than they already have! I almost feel like breaking my T.V screen everytime I see a Bell Commercial because it's soo much bull**** in a 20 second segment.
Matt
This issue is still happening to me - 5 months into my contract, and it still hasnt fixed itself!! i still get the garbled alien sound at least once a day and my phone still has random restarts. any luck with finding a fix for this?
I seriously think that it's a software issue. I used to get this noise as well but after switching to CM7 when the first nightly came out I haven't had it happen. Just my two cents.

I've been experiencing the same problems since getting this device. Sometimes it happens more frequently, often I can go a few weeks without experiencing it. Currently I have cm7.0 and it's happened twice last week. Quite the pain in the arse.
Not happening to me.... HTC DZ from Bell, unlocked and rooted and used on Rogers.... Using the Virtuous ROM (almost entirely stock ROM)
I suppose the issue is the software and Bell... before I had a custom ROM and still using the stock pre-installed ROM, I had none of these issues... at all, and I was using it over Rogers (I paid to unlock the phone not knowing I can unlock for free)

this is an issue with the radio that was shipped with the bell desire z (not sure if other versions had it too)... you can solve it by simply flashing a new radio to your phone... I had this issue a while back and solved by flashing the latest radio it solved the weird noise u get when u call or recive a call, and it also made the GPS issues go away... read through the development form and the Q&A forum as this issue has been previously discussed e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=899993
hope that helps

Thanks for the insight. Gonna try this right now.
I used to get complaints about being garbled. Changing radios fixed the problem for me too.
Btw, I didn't match ril files when I changed radio files.

i still wish it was bell's fault. i jumped ship to rogers over a year ago and ill never go back with bell. however the wife is still with them with an LG smartphone, and she has full signal yet drops calls consistantly all the time as well as wierd interference noises, while i can sit next to her on my DZ on rogers and talk for hours without a single hiccup. I blame th eold radio that came stock on bells DZ and bells chitty arse network for the issues you guys see.
I still remeber Roger's commercial on the reliability of their network... aaahhhh, funny times

hello everyone, I just got the Mogul and Im getting a bunch of missing calls, I found out that whenever the device is powered off (external or battery) I dont receive any calls, I know the phone is ON because the led is blinking but no calls as soon I turn power ON with side button I get the ntification of missed call, is there any setup Im missing or this is a defective phone?
I have treo as well, even the power off, when someone calls everything light up and it rings.
Edit: Never mind the soft reset fixed it, sorry you can delete this thread.
Settings>Phone>Services>Roaming>Get Settings, Make sure Sprint Only is selected.
If you hop onto a different network for some reason, your calls will go straight to voicemail. This is a Sprint problem, not a Mogul problem, I had this issue with my Moto Q.

Bad advice. It's a WM problem, not a Sprint problem as evidenced by a soft reset fixing it.
Yes because everyone knows after a soft reset that there's no way your network will change.
I know that in pigfucker land where you live there's only one cell tower, but in real cities there's multiple towers for multiple carriers. Call ************* Sprint and they will tell you the same thing I did. Turn off roaming and your calls won't go straight to voicemail. Sprint has this problem with A LOT of their phones and that's how they solve it.
you dont have to be so angry about it.
HAHA!
He's got a point. Just because a softreset fixed it this time doesn't mean its a device issue. This has happened with other phones (even non-smart devices) as well. A power cycle usually resets your service with the towers.
Couldn't help but post a reply
After reading the posts, I am still not sure if I understand the problem. Is pigfuckerland the only place where this is happening. Since I do not live in pigfuckerland, would I expect that the Sprint tower problem will not occur where I live. Please be more specific in your posts as I would like to avoid pigfuckerland on my travels. I have attempted to look up pigfuckerland in Google Maps, but did not locate it there. Will try using Wikipedia next to see if a post regarding pigfuckerland has made it online. Thanks for any and all information in advance on pigfuckerland that you are able to provide.
Dragon_76 = dicksucking moron for listening to Sprint and repeating what some CS rep told her
I would recommend you change the call ringer pulling setting from the default 5sec or something lower.
If a caller don't call long enough, you might miss a call.
Having a lot of problems
I'm also having the same problem with my Mogul, but I don't think soft reseting the phone fixes anything, it might fix it but only for a day or so. There has to be an explanation for this issue but I need a solution because it's driving me crazy. In average, I'm missing 2 calls per day and that's frustrating. This problem didn't start happening when I first got the phone, it was after a month or so that it began to happen. I'm not sure if there's an application that I installed that's causing this. First I blamed it on psShutXp, then on WMP because I started using it when I bought a bluetooth headphone, or my 8gb sdhc memory card that I recently bought. Whatever the problem is I need to know please!!!!!!!!!
What Radio ROM are you running? I had such problems with the Telus P4000 which is the HTC PPC-6800 or Sprint Mogul. I am currently running 2.06D and it's great the unit came with 1.32 originally, tried 1.40 and 1.47.01. 1.47.01 wasn't bad but not great, had some luck with 2.13 but found 2.06D to work best. I am interested in the latest rom which here which enables REV A, this may help too.
Hey Duck,
try doing this. I think that was happening to me too when i first got my phone. it is going into like a hibernation mode and like a computer's hard drive it is suspending itself til you wake it up. try going into settings/system/ power management or the battery icon. In there go to advanced and make sure that you unmark the two check boxes cuz you obviously dont want the unit to turn off. I hope this works for you.
A friend of mine had this same problem on his P4000. He changed the settings on his phone so that the screen never turns off. When I found out I told him that was a rediculous solution...he told me a CSR told him it was a fix. I convinced him to do a hard reset and it has fixed the problem. If it didn't, I was going to get him to DOA his phone. Try hard resetting...see what happens.
LOL at you people replying to a post from MAY 2007, 4 rom upgrades later toooooo funny
I'm Having the Same Problem
I live in Puerto Rico a US Island 100X35 and hare we have worlds largest collections of antennas per square mile... I is no a problem antennas....
I have the new Sprint ROM I hard reset the Phone and it works for a Day or so without having any app installed on it... and the problem persist... lot of misscalls and some times no voicemail notifications or miss calls notifications
I read a lot and have a lot of hard times with ****ING MORONS in sprint and the have this strange ****ING useless database with most common problems that the only problems reported are with Java and with Bluetooth so after a lot of reading I found some articles about people saying that they ware trying to make some changes to the Bluetooth and they start having problems with calls notifications... Ummmm Java and Bluetooth may be part of the problems when my phone works better is when I have no Headset and when have no Java appz but Hey is a ****ING PDA Phone I want to use Bluetooth... and Java...
What ever it is the problem I don't Know but is someone really know let me know and please **** Sprint and **** Microsoft jejejeje sorry But I think sprint programmers are a bunch of incompetents in a partnership with the Morons of microsoft... and HTC making thinks without thinks about a simple thing (BUG FREE, LOTS OF TESTING, and SOFTWARE and HARDWARE INTEGRATION)
That is what makes Linux what Linux is GPL good Hardware, Testing and Good Integration....
Bluetooth Problems
I've noticed that the problem with missed calls starts happens a lot when I start using my Bluetooth devices. I have the Motorokr S9 headphones and the motorola bluetooth speaker for my car. If I reset my phone then I'll work fine as long as I'm not using bluetooth devices. I'm not saying there's problems with the bluetooth devices but rather the firmware installed on the phone. Hopefully htc/sprint can fix this bug in the next ROM release which is supposed to come out early this year Please let me know if you are having the same problems when using your bluetooth devices!!!!!! We need to find out what's causing this.

Ok I'm Testing for obligation the New (not even Alpha ROM 3.16.651.0) becuse I cant go back to my old ROM I don't Know why but That is not the thing The thing is that I have stop using My Bluetooth because I left it in a friends house and I have seen that I'm having very less problems with The lost Calls... I don't Know Some say it is Sprint Problems, Some Say Windows Problems some say Active Sync Problems.... I personally thinks a little bit of everything....
For now I'm having less problems now that I'm not using the headset...
I have an Xperia X1a that I ordered through sonystyle.com and t-mobile is my service provider. I have had non-stop problems with this phone from the beginning. For the first week, I couldn't get internet. I played with settings and performed hard resets. Eventually, internet just started working. The biggest issue (also since the beginning) is that the phone will answer 1 out of every 3 calls. I will select the answer button and the phone will show connected but nothing happens. Same thing when I try to dial out. I have to perform a soft reset and then it works sometimes. Also, when someone calls me and I answer, the phone gives me the dropped call sound and the signal bar will change from 2 or 3 bars to no signal and then reaquire a signal.
Has anyone else had these problems? I am in West Michigan.
I got an x1a from Fry's Downers Grove,IL and have had no problems. One cool thing was when I put my SIM card in it asked if my service provider was AT&T(which it is) and than it installed all the settings. I did not have to enter anything manually.
i have tmobile as well and i haven't had any issues like that... it's a shame it's not working out for you. it does sound like it is defective though. are you sending it back for good or just for replacement?
My X1a has been the beacon of perfection for the past two weeks. Must be a defective unit. Those happen every now and again, just sucks if you are the one it happens too.
Have you tried changing the Band in the Settings-->Connections-->Advanced Networking
from HSUPA/HSDPA to GPRS, then soft reset? (after that mine worked, even after I changed it back to HSDPA and then HSUPA/HSDPA.)
Couldn't connect to the Internet until I did that.
Yep, I've tried all the settings. I was going to hold out for a firmware update but the people that are trying to call me are getting upset with my phone issues.
After dropping $860 on the phone, I really wanted it to be perfect. I think I'm just going to ask for a refund. This phone is pretty ruined for me.
Indeed, after $$$ I'd also expect it to work 100%..try another Unit - cause my experience is that this is the best WM PDA to date..
Good luck (sorry 2 hear u got a lemon).
I just wonder what else is on the horizon. I hear rumors of a few new Android devices coming out and also as second gen X1. I've never used the Android OS and don't know how functional it is for business. Also with the guy from HP dropping the Winmo 6.5 hint, I'm curious to see what happens. Lastly, I read somewhere that Winmo 7 will require an accelerometer. I think it would be a foolish requirement but Microsoft isn't known for making the best decisions....
So hard to justify spending nearly $1k with all the risk (not that the risk will diminish)...
I got mine last week, and when my phone was on, it asked me if I want to install settings from my provider, the only thing I had to fix for the internet to work was the proxy server which I knew. It's just bad luck, it happens every now and then. They have to exchange it for a new one.
Picked up a brand new Sprint HTC Hero on Monday (10/12/9) and within about a day it had stopped working entirely and was swapped out by a Sprint Repair Technician for another brand new one. I wanted to share the issues/experience.
Having spent an entire day fiddling about with the device, I noticed a couple of processes freaking out and needing to be forcibly shut down. I found out that this was because it had 0 internal memory left. I think that this was because I set up my gmail app to sync absolutely all my email to my phone, which obviously took up all the memory.
Without really taking too much time to think, I just decided to do a hard reset of my phone and restore it to factory settings. All seemed to go fine.
But the next day I was noticing that I wasn't not able to receive text messages. I was still able to make/receive call, and send texts, just not receive texts.
Everything worked perfectly prior to the reset: could make and receive both calls and texts, browse the internet etc. - the only thing that wasn't quite working was the bluetooth connection to my car: it was able to pair fine, but anytime it tried to do anything e.g. make a call/play music via bluetooth, the connection would die. However, a bluetooth connection to just a regular headset worked flawlessly.
I spoke to Sprint Customer Service on & off for about 2 hours. They tried refreshing the text messaging service on their end a few times. They also had me check that my phone was correctly programmed: the MDN number had actually reverted back to the temp number I was given (I was porting a number over from TMob). However, even after correcting this MDN number, it still did not work.
I was tempted to just go and get a replacement from the Sprint Store, but there was a repair center about 5 minutes away. Very helpful guy there (who actually ended up staying an hour after his shift was supposed to end) took a look at it.
He was able to replicate the problem exactly as described above. He decided to transfer the number to a different phone (a palm treo I think), and all the test text messages came flooding down. Although this would point to an issue with the phone, this could not rule out a network issue (for reasons that he did explain, but I can't quite remember). He then tried a hard reset himself: didnt do anything.
Finally, he told me that he had a new Hero sitting in the back. He tried setting up this new phone with my number and it worked perfectly.
So in short, my phone is heading to Kansas City (Sprint HQ from what I understand) to be broken down and examined.
Sprint repair guy said he had never seen anything like it before.
Want to also mention that both the Sprint Store salesmen and repair guy were the most helpful people Ive ever met. My salesman was actually on vacation: when i called the store to report the issue, they called him and he called me...very impressive. The repair guy also went above and beyond to keep me informed on the progress (as I was waiting while he worked on it), not to mention him working overtime.
I literally ported over last week from Tmobile and have been blown away by their service.
Just wanted to share the story. Feel free to get in touch if you want me to elaborate on anything.
UPDATE:
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.
Contacted the sprint repair tech. He says that sprint techs have a private internal forum and that the issue has been reported in the past (one of the reports was from a sprint employee who experienced identical problems (on Oct 8th - prior to launch).
From what Ive been told, the internal memory being full is the first symptom of the issue and that android processes begin to be forcibly shut down, and then txt messages cannot be received. Apparantly Sprint/HTC have an idea of what may be causing the issue but have not been more specific than that on the internal forum.
I'm getting my Hero swapped out for a brand new one (for the 3rd time) after work today. I've been advised to keep high-end feature use to a minimum (e.g. google contact/mail/calendar sync etc) until he has heard back from his development team.
Your title is quite misleading. Still happy it worked out for you in the end.
Yah your title is pretty terrible IMO for the post content.
Glad it worked out for you. I had a similar issue and had to have the device re-provisioned which didn't work, reset the device after the re-provision and it worked without issues since.
I have had mine for a while and installed around 60 apps on it yesterday all while surfing the net and texting. Before I went to bed I power cycled my phone and it was searching for service. Didn't have time to troubleshoot it until today noticed it was force closing several different things randomly and said I was out of memory. I uninstalled several programs and had around 30 mb free and still random force closings and no service.
Ended up doing a factory reset which seemed to fix the issue as I can receive calls and surf the market and internet but I'm not receiving text. As a matter of fact people said they were responding to my texts last night yet I never received any of them despite being able to surf the market and play games on my phone.
So now I'm wondering if my hero is jacked up as well and I'm wondering if it's related to using up all the memory on the device but I'd think doing a factory reset should have fixed everything but it seems like something isn't getting fixed correctly as I just had someone send me a text to test my theory and I haven't received it yet I can still do everything else on my phone.
If you are auto closing everything without setting up exceptions you will have issues. My radio stack became unresponsive after auto closing everything and I had to go through the system files that were running one by one to place them on the exclusion list otherwise it would keep happening. Now no issues.
I had the same issues with not getting txt msgs at first. I told the sprint rep and he simply tokd me to reset my phone...and it works great since then
Update to Original Message - Brand New Replacement Hero w/ Identical Issues
Yeah, the title may have initially been misleading, but it turns out its spot on.
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.

I will keep you all posted (if any of you are at all interested). I never usually post my boring issues on forums, but I thought this was pretty interesting given how new the CDMA Hero is.

Ya after reset my phone has been fine.
3rd Update - 3rd Replacement Hero
So I've just picked up my 3rd phone. The previous 2 are being sent off to Sprint HQ so they can determine exactly what is going on.
Apparently (as I think I mentioned previously), Sprint HQ have a very good idea as to whats going on but a) need to confirm it and b) wont tell the Sprint repair tech what they're thinking. In an email that HQ sent to the tech, they said:
“We should be hearing about a resolution shortly and I can check in with him later on today. I would simply let your customer know that this is the highest priority at development and they are close to a resolution.”
In the mean time, I've been advised not to install any non-standard apps i.e. anything but facebook/google. The tech has a feeling its down to one of the 2 memory management apps I used, Advanced TaskKiller Free and TaskKiller Free. Apparently the Sprint employee that I mentioned earlier that had this issue was also using a TaskKiller app. I was also advised not to set up any Microsoft exchange accounts as some problems have been reported, but I dont think its anything really to do with this (however, I'm following his advice all the same).
Should be hearing something from the tech guy early next week and will post the feedback.
mine is doing the exact same thing!!! i thought is was that nobody has texted me in the last couple of days but i was dead wrong..... im gonna try to uninstall task killer free and reboot to see if thats the problem.... if not, then back to the Sprint Store
Thats what happens when Sprint decides to patch up Android with CDMA support rather than waite for native in 1.6
You guys aren't just killing all the tasks when you are running these programs are you?

If you are auto closing everything without setting up exceptions you will have issues. My radio stack became unresponsive after auto closing everything and I had to go through the system files that were running one by one to place them on the exclusion list otherwise it would keep happening. Now no issues.

i did.... still same issue
I had to reset my phone twice today just to get the internet connection back. Android is a joke or maybe its just sprint. Im moving back to winmo as soon as hd2 is here in the US.
I can assure you it is not Android, but Sprints implementation of Android on the Hero. Hopefully we'll get a 1.6 update soon. Hang in there, it'll be worth the wait.
i hope so. i really miss bluetooth transfer and exchange server is constantly on i want to be able to set peek times. i also want me notifications to repeat until i acknowledge them. missed call only works or missed calls and sms.

I have reset my phone three times now and still not working. I can assure you this has nothing to do with the network as I'm still able to receive calls and emails hence not the network but what I believe to be HTC. Let me clarify, I believe I have either installed an app that corrupted my ability to receive sms text or somehow messed my phone up however it's the phone itself that's not erasing all info when I do a reset like it should.
I still have audio files from sound boards I installed when I initially got the phone that are still present after four factory resets that shouldn't be. This is a phone issue and not a network issue. Sadly the phone is so new there isn't a rom I can flash to that would fix the issue as whatever I did to my phone a factory reset isn't fixing it. It's that simple, if HTC made it to where a factory reset put the phone back to the original state then I wouldn't have this issue or files present from 3-4 factory resets ago....
This is frustrating :O
Hey guys(gals),
I have an interesting dilemma. I have had 5 hero's in a month. One was defective hardware (so we can rule that out, it was the green phone button) but the other 3 have had an interesting issue. I will have the phone for about 4 days (this is with stock android, and two rooted with MoDoCo) and then all data ( including texts, voicemails, incoming calls) will stop. They only way to retrieve said data is to make an outgoing call, then everything floods in. The local sprint store keeps replacing the phone, but I refuse to believe that I am that unlucky. Any thoughts? Anyone having a similar issue?

Do you have a significant other that could use your phone on their plan for a few days to rule out your account specifically?
Your issues sound strange, and not related to the phone. It's hard for me to believe (like you also) that its the phone since you've had four of them now with the same issue. Also, you've tried different roms, so that also makes it more difficult to be a phone issue. Are you just running a bone stock one? Or are you installing particular apps? you might see if you can't replicate it with no additional software for a few days.
@kmart
My Father and I are on the the same plan, (i.e. both on unl.) so that rules out service. The last phone, (no. 4) I left bone stock. No extra apps (except for Handcent SMS [ on a side note, I have run both ChompSMS and Handcent, so I do not think it is either]) and it still had the same exact issues.

Sounds like a problem with you account's provisioning or something. Mostly, it just sounds like a huge pain in the ass.

I had this exact same issue with my phone, it is definitely an account issue, get your msl number from them, mine was fixed after I did a ##786# menu then reset
they disabled texts and reenabled them on my account before they did this, and then they worked ever since
Have you changed your mode of operation setting? I haven't ever changed this but had a co-worker who changed it on his hero and it stopped getting text messages and voicemails until he made a phone call, once he changed it back it started working fine. Mode of operation needs to be set to Hybrid. You can find it under Settings->Wireless Controls->Mobile Network Settings. Hope this helps
Hey guys,
Thanks for the help, so no dice. I have left my Mode of Ops. in Hybrid (although, if you leave it on Ev-do is is kosher) and doing a reset does not work...It is a huge pain in the arse....
Well sh*t. I thought the last phone was the key, but here we go again. I got my MSL and did a reset, no dice, got Another phone....phone No. 6...Sprint has no idea what the hell is going on. Personally, I think something in the phone is crashing software. I have no idea what could be, but wtf.
I've had similar issues before. It's definitely an account issue - not on your billing account, but your specific phone number in the carrier's system.
What I did was fight for months with Sprint, kept talking to retarded tech support reps who know absolutely nothing, fighting with their managers, fighting with their 2nd and 3rd level tiers, and been told 1000 times my issue was fixed, just to have it reoccur in a month.
Honestly, unless you feel like fighting like that, I suggest you call your carrier and ask for a new number. When they create a new number for you, your account is practically changed, and everything will work like new. You just have to suffer with a new number, which is only annoying for a month or so until everyone updates to your new number.
Good luck man, I hate when that kinda crap happens. Not so much because of the issue, but mainly because no carrier has any sort of good tech support and would rather hang up on you than try and troubleshoot anything. They're completely stupid.
Well, to be honest, I have to keep this number, it is my business number..So, what I am going to do is keep going to into the headquarters store here in omaha. Then. Once I get to about phone no.7/8/9 I am going to call sprint retention services. At that point I will have 7/8/9 phones on record, and they will fix it and give me the 3 months free, or I will walk. I like sprint better than others around here, but damn I am getting pissed...

Yeah dude. I was pissed too. Good luck man, I know how you feel. Sprint is great, but when they f**k up they really f**k up and it's a pain in the ass to get things fixed.
27s, this isn't a retention issue, this is a Tier 3 tech support issue. They need to go into your account and completely deconstruct it, and put it back together again. Basically, it's a glitch in the system causing your provisioning to bork itself. I've seen it before, and yes, it's a pain in the ass to fix, but if you get a caring/dedicated tech, it's not even close to impossible.
Frankly, call into sprint, get on the line for tech support. As soon as you connect, ask for ADVANCED tech support. Don't give up until you're on the line with them. They'll be your saviors in this issue, mark my words.
Edit: For the record, I'm a former Sprint tech. I've had to do this before for customers, so I've had experience in the issue.
Hey thanks for the advice....I will do this first thing tomorrow....I don't suppose retention will give me anything will they....The sprint store in omaha is like 100 blocks from my house....gas$$$...haha
WTFF is this all about? This is a serious breach of privacy i have text messages being sent to other people now..I could deal with the 2G-3G issues and freezing but this now ...anyone having this problem?
How do i turn off sense U.I? will this fix all my problems?
....................................
Turning off Sense will not solve your problem. This is the first I heard of this happening with the HD2. When the G1 came out, this was a major problem. Messages being sent to people - from your number -whom you never sent a message to or even know. It was a system problem that T-Mobile fixed.
happened to me to me as well - twice. I called in and asked about it and they (T-mo and HTC) said they "could not duplicate the problem." A common, yet unnerving refrain.
I heard one other person complain about this issue before and I am pretty sure (for this one particular issue) it's all user error.
I watched my girlfriend send out some texts on my phone and several times she did not "tab down" to the text entry field before putting information into the send to field. This caused people to be populated in the send to box that were not intended recipients.
Also on my phone sometimes when your in the middle of sending a text the cursor will jump to the box above whatever your working in. Again this can send messages to the wrong person.
You just need to be aware of who is in the send to field before sending a message.
Disclaimer: My findings could be a completely different issue than what's actually happening so take it with a grain of salt.
This is funny. I just received a text from someone I don't know.
It's like I miss the beginning of the conversation or something. Here's what I got only:
"Sorry I have not contacted you lately. My car crapped out and I have to divert any money towards another car. I hope to be able to contact you soon. I hope all is well with you. Rob (Danny's Friend)."
I'm like WHAT???? I guess he sent it to me by mistake or something.
So this has nothing to do with the device? Its a problem at T-mobiles end?
i'm pretty sure this is a software issue and not on tmobiles end. and no it's not due to user error i can assure you only b/c i use this phone for business and i absolutely make sure im sending it to the correct contact. Honestly it's just not acceptable for something like this to be happening. i just bought this phone this past weekend and from day 1 this problem has been occuring. the phone will send your text message to an entirely different contact already on your message home screen. it will then duplicate that contact's name into both message fields. i really like the hardware on this phone. if anybody out there knows of a fix please let me know before i return this beast.
This is not a software issue. It is being cause by T-Mobile. They are in the process of upgrading towers and things are getting FUBAR.
this just happened to me twice today....... its pretty scary because i thought it was my error but it clearly wasnt..... and of course the texts went to my ex.... of all people....smh
This happened to me yesterday. I was texting a friend of mine, then my girl texted me obviously every text I get starts a new thread. well I got off the thread and then got on the thread and replied to my gf and it went to the friend I was texting before. This happened another time where I was texting my sister and my girl texted me again..i replied to her and then it went to my sister..both if the people I was texting where on AT&T and me and my girl are on T-Mobile could this be a reason>?!
I'd just like to CONFIRM that this is a a GENUINE software problem, nothing to do with your network or user error etc.
Personally I first noticed this several months back, shortly after getting my HD2 - and at first naturally assumed that *I* had made a mistake replying to the wrong person - however after it happened a few more times and I started getting friends to watching out for any unexpected/unusual messages so I could check it, I proved it to be a genuine problem.
On at least 1 occasion when I got an early indication that it was happening I managed to actively run several tests to confirm that it was definitely getting 'confused' - so I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it was not down to user error of any kind.
WHEN DOES IT DO THIS?
Whilst I can't confirm if this is the 'only' circumstances under which the problem could occur, on each occassion that I managed to definitely confirm the problem, I had 'replied' to a recent message from a contact in 'Conversation Mode' (i.e. where all the messages are grouped under a contact). Also in each case I had been in the middle of texting conversations with 2 or more people. You need to be aware that the wrongly delivered message still actually shows up under the conversation thread for the *originally* intended recepient, but as you might expect the network confirmation message (if enabled) does confirm who really received it.
My gut feeling (especially as I was on a train the first time, with intermittent signal), was that it was queuing up outgoing messages as it was waiting for a signal, but when it regained a phone signal rather than properly cycling thru all the messages and sending them to the appropriate person, it just sent them all to the same one. [And certainly as an experienced software developer myself, that would seem a 'reasonable' explanation - but that's nothing more than a hunch].
A POSSIBLE QUICK WORKAROUND?
I haven't confirmed - tho that's not the same as saying it *definitely* doesn't happen - any instances of this problem since I've switched to only using the 'Traditional Mode' (i.e. standard Inbox/Outbox, not grouped by contact), and avoided sending a message to anyone until I've had a network confirmation of delivery from the previous message - but then again, as you might imagine I've been very cautious about using SMS messaging at all on this phone!
AM I JUST BEING CYNICAL?
I couldn't help noticing that I spotted this problem just shortly before HTC started releasing several - evidently very rushed - patches over a period of a few days to fix an 'SMS Issue', which most people said didn't seem to work, shortly before removing them and starting to issue updated ROMs. At the time the updates were accompanied by some very vague blurb along the lines of "keeping in touch with friends and family is very important to you, and this new update aims to deliver just that with fast & reliable messaging". And whilst numerous people commented on the vagueness of the statement, most assumed it was was related to the well publisized SMS issue at the time regarding messages getting stuck in the Outbox. Perhaps I'm just being cynical, but maybe that's wasn't the real reason behind the deliberate vagueness? Consider what it would do to the sales of your new flagship product if it was publicly exposed that your customers 'personal' & 'private' messages might wind up going to your neice...your boss...your ex...(well, you get the picture!)
Apologies for the long post, but I'm hoping this might some proper light on the problem for other people - if you have further 'proof', or can shed any light on the circumstance under which this problem occurs, please respond - but to avoid confusion & speed a resolution, could you please differentiate between what you have managed to 'prove' beyond reasonable doubt, and what you just simply 'suspect'...
Of course what I'd really like is for HTC to at least confirm the problem has been *properly* fixed
Finally, FYI, my HD2 specs are:
Network:T-Mobile (UK)
ROM Ver: 1.48.405.2 (71294) WWE
Radio Ver: 2.05.51.05_2
(...and yes, I know this ROM can be updated now - I've just been working away the last few months and didn't want to take any risks by updating it - but hey, until the problem is acknowledged by HTC, how can we be sure it's fixed anyway?)
This has happened to me quite a few times while using this phone. Mine all seem to inadvertently go to one specific person if they don't go to their intended recipient. I don't know this person very well so it has been very awkward. Sometimes the intended recipient receives it as well, sometimes they don't. I have been very conscious of who is in the send to field of late but there seems to be no indication of a problem before the message is sent. I haven't seen a reasonable fix for this yet but I am hoping that this issue gets some scrutiny.
I am running NRG's July 17th GTX ROM BTW.
Just curious, which form of HTC Messenger is everyone using? I never had this problem until today. Yesterday I upgraded my Elegancia ROM which includes version 1.5 build 2015.3428. I'm going to switch over to SPB Shell and see if I can replicate, but perhaps it's this version from HTC...
I always thought this was user error until it started happening to me. What I did to fix it was delete all my contacts off my SIM and just use them from my phone. That fixed the problem right away.
This is interesting because it's NEVER happened to me, but all of my contacts are saved on my phone and synced through Microsoft exchange. This could be the fix for everyone.

I can verify that!
Ya, this happened to me too when I first got my HD2. It is quite awkward when it happens But I did do some research online about it happening to others (this was before I was here on XDA) and saw that someone said one thing that seems to fix it is copy all the contacts to your phone and delete them off your SIM card, just as TIGGAH said. Seems to work very well and I haven't noticed it happening since I started doing it.
