What are the main differences between the Inspire and the EVO (other then the kickstand of course)? Just wondering as I am thinking about getting my son a new phone and was thinking about this one.
Is the Inspire a Sprint machine?

Better processor, better GPU, more RAM, MUCH better screen. It's a more powerful device, no ifs ands or buts. I never use the FFC so I could care less about that.

Real-time results except games and you will never notice that CPU is faster unless your using benchmarks. 768mb RAM can be a plus, however my phone never bogs down on 512mb of RAM. Much better screen? That is pushing it. I have put my EVO side by side with the Inspire and barely noticed a difference. It was brighter, but not by a lot. Also being on AT&T makes it not even worth it.

I didn't say that the Evo is better. I just said that I like my Evo better. This could be due to many things:
1. It's on AT&T
2. It was stock Sense
3. It doesn't have a kickstand
4. It doesn't have a front facing camera

Exactly this. And to be 100 percent honest...I took my Evo and her Inspire side by side with a fresh ADW launcher home screen on both with the brightness turned up all the way on both of our phones with the same exact wallpaper and mine looked better. Now granted it was not that much better, but I could hardly tell any differences at all. However it was agreed by both my girlfriend and me that my screen looked better. Not only that, but I even think that I like the touch screen responsiveness of my Evo better than the Inspire. And to add something else to the argument, you think that HTC would have learned that making the camera stick out the back of the phone is going to end up in thousands of scratched lenses but with the design of this phone they only made the problem worse by projecting the camera lens out further from the phone.
Now I wont discount the Inspire, there are things that I like better about it. To start with, one of my biggest peeves about my Evo since about a month after I bought it was that the thing "creaked" when I would push moderately on the back of it below the camera when I was holding the phone in the palm of my hand. This is something that I have no figured out how to fix and have accredited to the poor design of the phone. It bothers the hell out of me that the Evo does not feel like a solid device while holding it in my hand. I even have a Amzer gel case on it and it still does the same thing. With the Inspire, the battery slides into the side of the phone so the whole unit is one piece. I like this because it feels a lot slicker and like HTC made a improvement on the design of phone.

I don't know either.
I love my NS, in just about every way shape and form but the feel of how solid my N1 was, cant beat it
an BTW any way you can kinda shorten up your sig, maybe make it longer width wise
Cant even compare with N1. if N1 had 4'' SAMOLED, I would even look at NS. Ton of thought was put into N1, and yet ZERO though in NS (just plain Galaxy-like phone).
I like it's design and build a lot better than any HTC phone, I'll give it that.
That being said, I'll be getting a Droid Incredible HD when it comes out on Verizon to replace my OG Droid. The Incredible HD is probably the only HTC phone with a design/build that isn't just 'Meh' (or 'Ew') to me.

Look at the Benchmarks for the G2, same processor. Blows the Evo away and can be overclocked to 1.8GHZ. Evo can barely handle 1.2.
The Shift has the same screen resolution on a smaller screen.

It doesn't have the little stand. It has only one LED flash, apparently.
The fact that screen is smaller make it's more portable for some people and at the same resolution means it will have a better picture. Most people don't want or have a need for a FFC.
The benchmarks show that performance wise it is a better phone than the Evo. The rest is up to personal preference.
The Evo is still a beast, however the Evo Shift is no slouch either.

Less camera and flash, less size. If it's smaller then it's expected to use less power. I still like the size of the regular EVO. How about the main memory? I have a lot of trouble with EVO after I installed Twitter. It accumulates more and more megs over time, and it cannot be moved to the mem card. Maybe this one will come with more memory.

If you're rooted and I'm assuming you are, you can move Twitter to your SD card using Titanium Backup. Now if you are using the widget then it will have to stay on the phone memory, but I use Tweetdeck and never have any use for the widget so it works out.
If you haven't tried Tweetdeck I highly recommend giving it a go.
I'm actually really digging the shift. I want a keyboard, don't need a ffc, don't want a 4.3 inch screen, like the processor (it really is awesome) like the gpu, and love that its made by htc. If u have an evo then stick with it, but I skipped the evo for a hardware keyboard, and won't touch the epic because samsung has tricked me with their "next big thing" before (instinct, etc.) I'm truly excited for this phone. Research it before you dis it, and realize that different consumers have different needs.

I hate that everyone with an EVO is hating on this phone. People dont understand the mhz isnt everything ex; celeron vs pentium. I guarantee when it drops and pulls some good development its gonna woop on the EVO as far as processing power and usability. Then all you guys are gonna be able to complain about is that there isnt a 4.3'' screen and a FFC. Considering I wont be using video calls and hate the size/battery life of the EVO I cant wait to get this phone as it is the reason why I held off from buying the EVO in the first place. This phone after OC is gonna be one of the fastest phones on the market I can assure you (Look how fast the G2 is)
Infact, My free optimus s beats the EVO on a lot of the benchmarks I've tested it on...
I really cant wait to have the shift OC'd to 1.5+ to rub it in to all my friends with the EVO

Are you sure is the same camera? (just asking, not trying to antagonize or anything) I though EVO is 8 MP, and the Shift is 5 MP or so? Also, EVO has 2 LED's as flashes. This one, judging by the picture, seems to have only one. Maybe an indication of the camera capabilities.
Thank you for the tip about Tweetdeck. I definitely will try it. The Twitter app is great, but every week it adds more and more megs up to its used mem.
Thanks again.

The camera is the same one from the G2/Desire Z not the Evo. Sorry if I was confusing above. From what I've read the G2 takes better pics than the Evo even though it is only 5MP as opposed to the Evo's 8MP.
My fiance actually ran over to Radio Shack and picked up my Shift this morning, so hopefully I'll have some initial thoughts on it tonight.
Glad Tweetdeck worked out for. Check out the Chrome app or desktop version too. Outstanding! Thanks for the thanks!

If the 3D is locked down the way they say it is, flashaholics will either have to go through rehab, or get another maker's phone that isn't so locked down.
Yes. If the 3D is locked down. Coupled with Sammys new desire to change their bad rep.. with the Galaxy S looking to be one of the first phones officially Upgraded to GB. This phone is looking SO much better.
I just REALLY hope it doesn't have a crappy physical keyboard. I want it just the way it is. Sammy phones also have excellent battery life right out the box so waiting for a solid root method/custom roms/kernels won't be an issue.
3D is a gimmick at best. If the Samsung's battery life is significantly better than that of the EVO 3D, I'll have no choice. For me, personally, performance, battery life, and display quality are the most important things on a smartphone. The SII was overclocked to 1.5GHz yielding 4000+ Quadrant scores. That's impressive. The battery life is also pretty good coming from some reviews. I feel the 3D feature and camera on the new EVO will guzzle that battery. And I don't care how good qHD is, that Super AMOLED Plus 4.3" screen is pure sex. The slimness of the SII doesn't hurt either. I don't know about you, but I'm somewhat over my EVO's shape/style... hoping for something different and the EVO 3D doesn't really offer that.

While I agree about the 3D portion being a gimmick. It won't be killing the battery unless you're using it.. which is optional. I doubt people that think of it as a gimmick will use it much.
I am 100% with you on your points tho. Performance, battery life, display quality are most important. Samsung repairing their rep is also really starting to win me over. My mom has the mesmerize... that thing looks awesome and has excellent battery life. Plus she is about to get a GB update...
I love HTC.. but I just feel liek the new Sense 3.0 will bring the same poor battery life even with a bigger battery. It may be a little better.. but prolly not much. If the bootloader is encrypted.. then forget about it.

I'd take this over the 3d. HTC seems to always have battery issues with every phone, and I know they did with every phone I or a friend has had. Couple that with a locked down bootloader and this guy is going SGII (as long as the build quality is good).

Yes, it was the same way on the Galaxy S 1. Once it came to the US, each major carrier got a different version. Verizon/Us Cellular looked about identical with AT&T varying only a little.
As we know, the Sprint Epic 4G was the bastard child of the galaxy S line... horrible.
its damn slower than my htc evo shift...seriously not like in opening app and other stuff like launcher but in typing and touching screen have to press lil bit twice almost most of the time..charging slower than my htc shift...and it eats up all the ram everytime i open and see in task killer only shows 60m..where in shift it was always around 80 to 90m remaining same apps and everything infact not running any htc apps..and no notification lights no for charging and non for text or anything
i would suggest you guys to stick with shift and just dont worry too much about updates..wish htc had made this one too just like nexus one
just my opinion

Wouldn't get my hopes up for Honeycomb, Google pretty much stated HC is tablet only and Ice Cream Sandwich is going to replace both Honeycomb & Gingerbread by the end of the year. So more then likely we'll get ICS long before we see HC for phones.

I'm guessing you had a Moment? The Transform is actually pretty nice for a low to mid level device.
I would also have to agree that when I switch from my shift a dual core is a must. As far as the Nexus S I wasn't impressed by it's design nor its specs. No expandable memory being on of the biggies. And no improvement in processor versus previous galaxy s phones, not 100% sure. I can't see what this device has that makes it superior to others, rather than just being vanilla android.
I'm not happy with Samsung's plasticy feel of their devices either. Makes them feel cheap. I do like the AMOLED screens but not the dotted effect that some (including me) can see.
However, I am seriously giving the Galaxy S II phones consideration when choosing my next device. Specs wise seems rather nice. Has dual core processor, nice camera, and expandable memory. And the Super Amoled Plus screen seems to correct the dotted effect of the previous Amoled screens as the rgb colors are evenly presented.

its damn slower than my htc evo shift...seriously not like in opening app and other stuff like launcher but in typing and touching screen have to press lil bit twice almost most of the time..charging slower than my htc shift...and it eats up all the ram everytime i open and see in task killer only shows 60m..where in shift it was always around 80 to 90m remaining same apps and everything infact not running any htc apps..and no notification lights no for charging and non for text or anything
i would suggest you guys to stick with shift and just dont worry too much about updates..wish htc had made this one too just like nexus one
just my opinion

You my friend need to root your phone. Secondly, the nexus S 4G has not been out very long, and samsung is typically slow on the updates. I do not know if you ever had an EVO 4G (not shift), but when i originally had mine, it was absolutly horrible in terms of responsiveness and battery life (battery still sucks). This was 3 months after its release.
Why is this in the shift forum? Not to be an ass but I don't think this is necessary or productive. We need an offtopic forum lol

This is just a guess, but I think ALOT when on behind the scenes on the Nexus that we don't know about. I mean how would google allow their flagship phone to come out with technology that is outdated by almost a year? I think this phone was in development, and got held up, and by the time assembly on it started it was too late to scrap it. That's why there is another rumored Nexus that should be ready come Holiday season. Have to make up for your mistake somehow.

doesn't matter in this case, like any Nexus phone

Yea I agree with you. I didn't think Google would have purposefully put out a technologically inferior flagship device unless they had issues while developing.
If other galaxy s phones are any indication, probably took that long to get gps working.

i love my shift but can do with out sprint seeps i mean i get like .45mbps i want 100mbps at min uggggg come on sprint
So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.

I would bet that the Epic would perform better and imo the keyboard is also better. Epic is easily rooted and has a nicer display. Easy pick.
And everyone needs boob!

The epic pretty much is an all around better phone
An argument could be made on the SW side, but that falls by the wayside if you are not staying stock
Mainly, the EVO Shift is simply missing to many top level hardware items, that make it a upper mid range phone rather than the top tier the Epic is
I was faced with the same question when I bought not long ago.
Screen size favors Epic (4.0" - 3.6" That's a significant difference in Real Estate)
Screen brightness favors Epic (Samsungs Super AMOLED easily tops anything HTC has IMO)
Keyboard favors Epic (the larger size of the phone spaces the keys better, Epic has 5 rows including dedicated number row)
Processor favors the Epic (1.0 Ghz Hummingbird - 800 Mhz Snapdragon)
I believe rated battery stock time is 5.50 hrs for Epic to 6.00 for Shift.
Epic has front facing camera (which I never use, but some people do I'm sure)
The list goes on, but you can google other features.
As far as Flashing ROMs, I am NOT really tech savvy, but after reading through these forums I was not only able to root the phone quickly, but flashing was simple and I have found the ROMs I've used to be stable and functional with very few bugs. Can't beat that.
Epic, all the way.
Epic. Who ever choosed shift needs a swift kick in the wallnuts.

Even though i love my epic i would go with the shift because it has locked gps in a few seconds and capable of overclocking to 2.0Ghz and 1.6Ghz stable.
Its fun to use but i like epic 4g because of its screen. and Samsung is Easy to manipulate and easy to use like rooting and all that stuff.
But now its easy to get the Shift rooted in all.
I just like the bigger screen and AMOLED is deal breaker. i went with the shift at 1st because Samsung pissed me off as well as thousands more, with a certain phone.
Thanks everybody for your answers .. I'm leaning towards the Epic now.

Yeah .. I'm leaning more towards the Epic though just because of the screen and 5 row keyboard.. But the thing I heard is that the Epic phones screen black out all the time, and I'm not going to have insurance or be on Sprint (flashing) .. And the HTC build quality is superior to Samsung. So I'm stuck.. any more suggestions?
I figured I would post this here, even though I also placed it in the troll thread, as it was having the same discussion
I haven't heard of the Epic screens blacking out, but mine has held up beyond belief, even after facing harsh abuse.
IMO, it is a not a "power/speed" issue that makes the EVO Shift a lesser phone, but the overall lack of top end hardware features, and those CAN'T be modded in later
Here are several reviews with the conclusions, as well as links to the original reviews, and the Epic is not just a winner, but a CLEAR winner in every case.
From Techd
You don’t have to imagine how two Android smartphones would perform when pitted against one another, as the folks at WireFly have done the deed. Pitting HTC EVO Shift 4G against the Samsung Epic 4G, the latter wins out big time.
...
So, it seems like the EVO Shift 4G did admirably well for some basic processes, but stumbled badly when it comes to complex 3G graphics. But then again, it has a lower running processor than the Epic 4G with only 800MHz — though that’s not the end all be all performance measurement.

4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G
Avatar for Brian Barrett Brian Barrett —4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G Let's say you want a 4G phone, because 4 is one more G than your current phone has. If you're deciding between Sprint's finest—the HTC Evo Shift and the Samsung Epic 4G—you're gonna want to watch this.
Both phones are sliders, both are on the same network, and by outward appearances seem pretty much identical. But! The Epic 4G, it turns out, is packing way more horses under the hood. As it should, considering it costs almost twice as much as the Shift.

The Winner
Unlike other previous battles such as the HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic battle, Samsung Epic 4Gthe HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Samsung Epic 4G battle seems to have a pretty clear cut winner. The Samsung Epic 4G, even though it came out first, has huge advantages when it comes to display, and features while the HTC EVO Shift 4G manages to win a slight edge in design and software. Overall the advantages of the Samsung Epic 4G are too big to ignore and it easily comes out on top in this battle of 4G keyboard slider smartphones on Sprint.

heres the thing though Shift is running 2nd Gen Snap. And even @ 800Mhz it pulls double score than Epic @1Ghz both on froyo.
Then Shift on 2.3 just blows the sh*t outta the Epic.
Newer Technology is better.
Older Technology is Wiser.
But in the end its all down to personal preference.
Just mess with both phones see what you really like and want.

Never had my screen go black or anything at all for that matter, but that would be covered by manufactures warranty I think.
The screen is amazing.

What do you mean goes black out? like the power saving feature? you can set the timer on that...
As for build quality..who told you HTC phones have better build quality? that is a myth created because the samsung phones feel so light..the build quality is top notch, not to mention Gorilla Glass..

SmartBench 2010 and other various benchmarks but Quadrant does pull higher but thats not point. the point is its newer technology 45nm instead of 65nm.
