Archos 101 and Viewsonic GTablet comparison - Gen8 General

Hey guys,
Since these 2 devices often get compared and I had the ability to test both of them I spent some time over the weekend doing a pretty comprehensive comparison of the Archos 101 and GTablet. I thought it might be of interest to some people here. Overall I am happy with the Archos 101 as a personal device and plan to use the GTablet at the office for Android development work.

My Xoom Review

So I can't post a link. Google "Xooming in on the Xoom and Honeycomb" or go to Cloudy Days and Connected Nights (google that one too).
No thanks, go promote your site elsewhere.

I got to cdnn.lightshedder.com, but no Xoom article. Still have the Archos 101, or has that been relegated to the RMA bin? I was camped on the Archosfans forum for a while looking at the Gen8, but it became evident that the devices were low quality, the firmware buggy, and the support non-existent.
it is cdcn.
Still have the Archos. Saving it for when I have to send in the Xoom for the 4g upgrade. My site is totally non-comercial and I thought members might be interested.
Thanks for the lucid write-up. I enjoyed it and your other pieces.

Hi!

Hi everyone,
I just got my Iconia A500 last night and so far I'm loving it!
I have a Dell Streak 5 as my "always with me device" and I previously had a ViewSonic gTablet, just to try the 10" form factor, but despite an active dev community, the gTab is plagued by software limitations. I was tired of hombrew ROMs that didn't work quite right.
So I spent the last few weeks combing the forums and comparison shopping to find the right tablet for me. LG Optimus Pad (G-Slate), Moto Xoom, Iconia and Eee Pad transformer were all in the running. After more hours than I like to think about, I settled on the A500.
It was the haptic feedback that put it past the Transformer for me.
Out of the box it's running Netflix, Plants vs. Zombies HD and everything else I need!
So happy! Now all I've got to do is grab the Huawei 3G drivers and I'm all set!

If you don't mind, i'll jump on to your thread as well. I was going to make one, but thought it might just be clutter =p.
Hello everyone, I got my new A500 earlier today! I look forward to being a part of this community. Once I get familiar with the device, I will probably hang around the general/Q&A sections of the forum. I couldn't believe how simple it was to root the device, have to give some koodos to Acer in that regard.
Like the OP, I was shopping around and had the Iconia, Xoom and Transformer in the running with the Iconia winning. I just plain didn't like the Xoom, but it was an Android device so it was considered. Contemplated the Transformer, but in visiting their forums, there seemed to be alot of problems with it. So Iconia it was, and the price was right as well!
I really wanted the HTC Flyer, but they don't have root yet and it's not officially available up in the north here =(. Would have been a fine collection to my HTC family, but alas it was not meant to be. I do like this Iconia though!

welcome to the iconia!!
user from day one here
Only issue I have with my iconia is that its not Pink.ohh and I had to pay for it myself.
Its a awesome device.
Take the time to read the forums and get to know the limitations and issues.like the whole bootloader encryption and work around.Do so before you jump into moding your tab.
Have fun.

Thanks for the warm welcome! My Iconia is the one device I wont be modding too much

How did you get netflix working out of the box? Have you actually tried streaming anything? I'm pretty sure it doesn't work without the patch.
Was wondering the same thing...

It was working, streaming and all, out if the box...
...when it was still running 3.01.
Then I did an OTA update to 3.1. Now streaming is broken, lol. I'll have to patch it tonight.

A500 ....they call me mister popularity

Just a small paragraph to say I'm pretty pleased with this tablet and honeycomb development.
As an early buyer of this tablet ( from the first day in Best Buy in NYC) and having sort the problems of 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 releases, I'm happy with the way this is working out.
Acer Iconia is a great tablet and it has been selled by far over Acer expectations. Now it is getting ATT selling it on contract.
As I see this in a very optimistic way, the more the merrier as Acer should respond to their clients and provide updates and improvements for us.
That's all for now...just a happy dude with his happy tablet ( by the way, my notebook has become a real dust buster as I have no longer use for it at home)
As a suggestion for the elder....please install mame emulator, download some roms, plug in your Xbox controller and have an excellent time!
Bye

Yep. I'm a very happy owner too and thankfully didn't have any of the issues that others did off and on. This was my first Acer product, but it won't be my last.
Being an apple fanboy I was presented with the dillema of the Acer a500 or an ipad2. Having owned every iPhone from day one it made this choice much more diffifuclt than I originally thought. I spent about a week just reading comparison reviews and alot of them had many complaints about the Acer and not many complaints about the I pad. I've messed around with the ipad2 and I am extremely efficient/familiar with the ios system. Having worked as a regional manager for a T-Mobile dealer I was one of the first people to own the T-Mobile G1 and even had the very first review on the front page of wired and androidcommunity (Google kaziko android g1 wired). This had me familiar with android and so when it came down to choosing between the two, it was about hardware. After realizing the potential of the Acer a500's hardware ESP the full size USB port that is fully functional and the 100% mirrored HDMI out built in, I decided on the Acer. I must say its one of the best decisions I have made in the past years as far as technology. I have only been disappointed by the lack of apps in the market that are fully compatible with my tablet, but this is a problem that is temporary and not really a reflection of the device itself. This tablet is fast, responsive, fully featured and IMO it is an iPad1,2 killer. I also saved myself about $300 which I can use for other things now which is always a plus. If anyone is considering an ipad1,2 over this device, I advise you to take a deeper look. At half the cost and twice the capability its a no brainer that the Acer Iconia A500 is simply the better choice and will continue to prove itself as Honeycomb devlops and developers increase the amount of honeycomb compatible apps in the market

Being stuck in a country where the tech is very limited. I made my decision on impulse and availability. I am happy that I did however, very happy with it. Only tiniest issue is the weight. It does get to feel heavy after long periods of use but with the price and the ports, it more than makes up for it.

I just picked up a 16gb acer Iconia today and I've gotta say it has blown me away, it does everything I hope a tablet could as well as a usb port "yesss"
I did some serious looking around before picking it up, it's main competitor was the Galaxy tab and Transformer but those tablets lack in the port department which was my main deciding factor.
Acer does not disappoint.
For $299 it was a no brainer for me. I like Android and the full size usb was a nice addition to an already nice tablet. I too would like more tablet apps for honeycomb but as the market picks up for honeycomb I am sure we will see more just like Android.

[Q] Tablet Upgrade

I apologize if this is not the proper place.
I have been using the Nook Color running CM7 for about 6 months and love it. However, I find that I need a larger, more powerful tablet for some of my needs and am looking for opinions. I will keep the NC for around the home and for the family, but would like to get a larger tablet for work/play for myself.
I do not want an Ipad, but am unsure if the tablets that run Windows 7 are worth the extra price. Does anyone have any experience in those tablets? What about the Asus Transformer that I see people talking about.
Just looking for opinions here. Thanks.
I don't own one but the Asus tablets look pretty nice, have great specs, and I think the price is reasonable!
If you can find a HP Touchpad refurb then they provide a good economical base for running both CM7 and now ICS is running very nicely on these now.
Check out the Touchpad threads on this forum and you will find many of our favorite devs are active on the Touchpad.
Both Transformers are awesome
My wife has the original transformer and I have the transformer prime. Both are fantastic.
If you are on a budget grab the original transformer as you can get great deals on it now.
Don't get a Windows 7 tablet. They are terrible. Like others have suggested the ASUS transformer is a great 10 inch tab.

I would like to also throw my suggestion for the ASUS Transformer as well. I have the tf101 and love it. I would love to have the Prime, but can't quite justify it at the time.

New Vega owner

Hi all, just thought I'd introduce myself. I've lurked on these forums for a while (mostly in the Galaxy S and Asus Transformer sections though). I just bought a refurbed Advent Vega from Currys/PC World's eBay store as my Dad wants to learn to use a computer so I figured a tablet would be the easiest route. I'm definitely impressed with the quality of this tablet so far, especially as it only cost me about £117 with free shipping. I'm looking forward to rooting it and installing Vegacomb on it as Froyo on a 10" tablet is just painful.
Hello and welcome to XDA.
Like you I was a long time lurker before I registered & finally posted.
Oh well, so much for that idea. Looks like I can't upgrade it to Honeycomb until I can source a Windows machine.
