My Xoom Review - Xoom General

So I can't post a link. Google "Xooming in on the Xoom and Honeycomb" or go to Cloudy Days and Connected Nights (google that one too).

No thanks, go promote your site elsewhere.

@singraham
I got to cdnn.lightshedder.com, but no Xoom article. Still have the Archos 101, or has that been relegated to the RMA bin? I was camped on the Archosfans forum for a while looking at the Gen8, but it became evident that the devices were low quality, the firmware buggy, and the support non-existent.

it is cdcn.
Still have the Archos. Saving it for when I have to send in the Xoom for the 4g upgrade. My site is totally non-comercial and I thought members might be interested.

Thanks for the lucid write-up. I enjoyed it and your other pieces.

No Hands On Reviews?

Outside of the Wirefly unboxing video, I'm surprised that that none of the tech blogs (i.e. Phandroid, Gizmodo, Engadget, etc..) have been sent units for review prior to launch. I'm curious if this to avoid any potentially negative reviews?
I can't help but wonder if this is due to the fact that development is really coming down to the wire. It looks like the hardware has been done for a while, but both Honeycomb and Flash seem to be coming down to the last moment, and it looks like Flash was booted. I'm guessing that review units weren't sent to reviewers earlier was because the software wasn't as finalized as everyone wanted.
The Atrix, on the other hand, not only made it to reviewers early, but it was released early as well, so I don't think that Motorola is afraid of the media.
It could be that, or it could be because Motorola is trying to get this thing out the door the INSTANT it is ready to get some initial sales in before the iPad2 is announced March 2.
You're not very smart if you think review sites haven't had the xoom for at least a week or more.
The release is tomorrow...expect the nda to expire tonight or tomorrow and reviews to pop up immediately after that.

I agree and since the full Android 3.0 SDK has been released I think review units are on the way or soon on the way. I doubt the reviews have anything to do with Ipad2 coming up. I think the wifi model will probably be the answer and thats why I think that moto is holding out.
Im a part of the media base. Motorola's PR team told me that they don't have any review units yet. This has to be a first.

With regards to the last minute stuff, that's more or less what I was thinking. I suppose there is a chance we will some some reviews later this afternoon / this evening.
This whole launch really has been a debacle. Too many leaks and last minute omissions(no Flash)...just so much uncertainty and not in a positive way. Although the unlocked bootloader news is HUGE.
1 more day...1 more day.

Wouldn't you want positive reviews out a few days before to stir up buzz and jump start sales? As was mentioned above with the Atrix. Most tech stuff gets reviewed a few days before to generate positive headlines. Even Apple products get rerviewed early by Wall Mosspuppet and David Pogue...

Apps will probably be a deciding factor for a few months. Since android has taken off, app development has boomed and with how Apple is handling in-app subscriptions, I think we will see devs heading towards other platforms.
i got to use a xoom for about 15 min today
ill give you my initial impressions
size is good, right where a tablet should be
it is heavy, enough to notice it
meaning the battery is good, it was on for almost two hours and at 77%
android 3.0 is awesome how its laid out
there is button on the left for tabs of running apps
on the right is any control / notification, much better than the shade
there is the redesigned market that is like the web version, so its much better
i use chrome on the computer, and it is now like that on 3.0 +++
and google video chat did work over 3G
it did degrade quality based on speeds but overall good
using it basically solidified me buying it tomorrow.
My GTablet get 10hrs of battery life easy. I would be shocked if the Xoom didn't as well.
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
I wonder how fast heavy websites render compared to the iPad? I hate how slow it takes the iPad to fully load up a regular website like say, Engadget.. atleast 20-30 seconds! I'm hoping the Xoom feels more like a netbook, with a bit more snap and rendering speed. That would make web browser so much more fun and entertaining.
yeah it's the most important thing of a tablet.
my main use would be browsing the web too...
when i used it, i had 5 tabs open and could easily jump between them quickly (and other apps)

Which tablet is right for me?

I know most of the people here will favor android, but I have also posted this on an apple forum. Im looking for overall opinions.
I am looking at the Xoom wifi, iPad32gb wifi, and Galaxytab 10.1 (new one)
Here is my background and what I am looking for, any insight you may have will be greatly appreciated.
I have an iPod Touch, I have never used android. I have played with xoom and iPad extensively at bestbuy for a couple days.
I am in the military and will be shipping to Ft Gordon for about 7 months this june. I would like to get a tablet that will be easier to use and easier to maintain than a laptop.
Some of the things I am looking for is
Size/weight
speed, (I saw xoom can overclock, very impressive)
Usability
Apps
Facebook
Music
Video Chat with family members at home (Desktop PCs)
Email
Web
Also. The size and weight is important. Which is making me want to wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, as it has the dimensions of an ipad2, but the power of honeycomb.
The only problem with that, is it comes out june 8th, I ship jun 16th. I fear I will not have enough time to get it setup the way I like before I leave.
Anyway, im rambling, If you have any insight on what I should do in my situation. Please post your thoughts.
~Scott
Why do we have so many thread around "is this right for me"? Can I tell you that you should drive BWM and not Lexus because it is right for you? Or you should eat McD and not Carls Jr because it is right for you? Shouldn't you determine what is right for you?
The best way is knowing what you need and go out and test it out. That is why we have retail stores.
I have played with both, and am still undecided. I am looking for someone who has used both more than I have and has a general opinion.
If videochat is one of the requirements then I would recommend going with the Xoom. The 2mp camera and video gchat and other third party apps are much easier to use with Desktops than the facetime clients.
Gee, I wonder which one people on a xoom forum will ask you to get.
Ask on an Apple forum or a Samsung forum and see what answers you get.
This thread is pointless and if you searched even once you would have found 10 or more threads about this.

Wow, short fuse
Hello, I've tinkered extensively with both the ipad and Xoom. Here are my thoughts on those categories (btw I'm majory Android biased but I'm going to try and step away from that and be as honest as I can)
Size/weight - Definitely iPad, they make very sleek and weightless products
speed, (I saw xoom can overclock, very impressive) - xoom can overclock and that makes it freaking quick but out of the box, they are both very fast. I will say that Apple has an uncanny ability to make very polished products. But the Xoom is very close if not the same.
Usability - Xoom all the way, I just think you have so many more options and such a variety with widgets. Like I said, I'm an android fan but I am one because I love using it more than apple products (very limited and constrained, I just don't feel like I can do as much on them)
Apps - Apple wins but Android has equality where it counts. One note is that many many Android apps are free where as most of the Apple apps are costly. But Apple does have a lot of apps, and good ones!
Facebook - Same except for playing flash games on the Xoom. Heck, I play Rummikub on my Evo 4g in bed with my wife before we go to sleep. It's not polished and perfect, but I can do it with enjoyment.
Music - iPad has iTunes which works very well, if you prefer that. I love android because I can take my mp3 files from my comp, drag them on to the root of my android, and then listen to those files. Nothing beats that for me, and btw my first mp3 player was an iPod back before they were color and I abhorred having to sync with iTunes just to get music on my mp3 player, and the from there not be able to share that music.
Video Chat with family members at home (Desktop PCs) Google video chat seems easier to use with family members because it works with anyone with a web browser (a PC web browser) but I don't have a lot of experience in this matter so don't weigh an opinion on this.
Email - I love gmail and I feel this would be better on the Xoom
Web - Tabbed browsing, speed, and flash make me really like the Xoom.
Hope it helps
Davy
ON you tube there are a few comparison between ipad 2 and Xoom and ipad 1 on each category from size, screen, and usage.
hmmm let me see what tablet would help you out?

This is what I'm concerned about. Anyone in here being harsh to the OP should be ashamed of their behavior. That sort of behavior is what is going to turn people away from us, and likely Android as well.

Unbelievable - How rubbish are Motorola

I've just heard that the European 3.1 update for the Asus Eee Transformer is rolling out today, and I'm forced to stick with 3.01 on my EU Xoom!!!
I wish I'd followed my gut feeling and not rushed into purchasing a Motorola product. I am now stuck with an obsolete product with no scheduled EU release for the update.
This company sucks big time.... rant over

Looking at this post at the motorola support forums, that mayleave us with no warranty.
The whole lack of an official update has pissed me off too. Really crap on Motorola's part.
I feel for you guys
Feel for you guys.
They suck in this front totally.
I feel you, but how is it obsolete? Its still works doesn't it?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
How come Asus can push 3.1 update out TODAY to the Transformer and we are looking at waiting for MONTHS?
I mean the whole reason of getting teh Xoom was because it was supposed to be a "Google Experience" device that will get updates first. I got the Xoom and not the transformer, even the transformer is £100 cheaper, has a working SD card slot, the ability to dock to a keyboard and extended battery, and a way better IPS screen
This is my first and last Motorola purchase
ahhh damn i had the same situation i was between transformer and xoom and i buy the xoom because i hoped to get updates directly and have not to wait and wait and wait and wait.
I love android over all but on the update part apple is realy more professional and it works. Why i can't get a update if it's ready.
Like the others my first and last device from motorola

It's running an obsolete buggy os that is now superceded on competitor devices! In my book that makes it obsolete. Thank god for Ebay, and with a bit of luck Motorola will get what's coming to them.... failure in the tablet market and eventual bankruptcy.
My impatience has turned to anger, sorry everyone.
Sent from my MZ601 using XDA Premium App
I'm with you. Totally annoyed with lack of support from Motorola. Docking station without any USB passthrough, no SD Card support, no date on release of 3.1.
Absolute RUBBISH and my last ever purchase of a Motorola produc.
Plus still no stock images. It's the lack of information as much as anything else
Would it be worth asking some Android Centric sites or tech blogs in general to write a few articles on the situation? There is a large thread on the Motorola support forums on with no info given and plenty of other threads asking the same thing.
No one is getting anywhere with Motorola and perhaps some pressure from the media might make Moto spill the beans on a release schedule?
I'm not normally into negative press campaigns but it would be a good test to see if Moto are listening (like HTC did with the bootloader issue).
> I mean the whole reason of getting teh Xoom was because it was supposed to be a "Google Experience" device that will get updates first.
Here is your problem. The Xoom was sold as a Google device in the US and the US alone. For the rest of the world it was a Motorola device, with all the baggage that brings with it, and probally shouldn't have been called the Xoom. The *only* saving grace here is that the US and EU wifi versions are the same hardware, and are software compatible. If you have a non-US wifi Xoom, flash the US software or take it back as you will never be happy with with the update situation.
If your worried about your warranty etc after flashing, be aware that store clerks cannot tell which part of the complicated electronics recived a far higher voltage than it was rated for, and this combined with nicer EU consumer protection laws means your device can be returned with impunity.
It is a shame Google decided against a Nexus Tablet, I just spent more on a Nexus S than a new LG 2x would have set me back. Mainly because I cannot be arsed with continually having to waste time jumping through hoops with Android. I love the OS, but frankly the OEM's and US carriers will kill it faster than free iPhones in cereal.

(more to the thread) You bought a device with an unlockable bootloader -- this ALWAYS gives you a choice, wait for Motorola, or do it yourself.
To be honest I am only a semi-competent user and do not have the confidence to follow that procedure. I should not have to, the product should be supported by the manufacturer, it's not even been out for 3 months!

completely agree with you....i didnt pay 700 euro to do all this myself....its basic responsibility of motorola to provide the update first to xoom........
can't we do something about this? how people has raised their voice against htc and HTC had to reply.....
I have the Canadian Xoom and I am pissed at Motorola as well, my first Motorola product and soon my last, how much different is the USA xoom versus the EU/Canadian, is it that different that it takes months to release the 3.1 update ? like others have said, I paid big bucks for this I am happy with it but I do not feel conferable rooting it and I should not have to, all I want is to be able to download the photos from my DSLR, if I do not get the update soon I will root it, then Motorola can KISS MY (you know the rest), I do not believe it is Google fault for not releasing 3.1 to the non US Xooms, simply Motorola does not give a crap about its customers outside of the US,
thanks

Hi!

Hi everyone,
I just got my Iconia A500 last night and so far I'm loving it!
I have a Dell Streak 5 as my "always with me device" and I previously had a ViewSonic gTablet, just to try the 10" form factor, but despite an active dev community, the gTab is plagued by software limitations. I was tired of hombrew ROMs that didn't work quite right.
So I spent the last few weeks combing the forums and comparison shopping to find the right tablet for me. LG Optimus Pad (G-Slate), Moto Xoom, Iconia and Eee Pad transformer were all in the running. After more hours than I like to think about, I settled on the A500.
It was the haptic feedback that put it past the Transformer for me.
Out of the box it's running Netflix, Plants vs. Zombies HD and everything else I need!
So happy! Now all I've got to do is grab the Huawei 3G drivers and I'm all set!
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
If you don't mind, i'll jump on to your thread as well. I was going to make one, but thought it might just be clutter =p.
Hello everyone, I got my new A500 earlier today! I look forward to being a part of this community. Once I get familiar with the device, I will probably hang around the general/Q&A sections of the forum. I couldn't believe how simple it was to root the device, have to give some koodos to Acer in that regard.
Like the OP, I was shopping around and had the Iconia, Xoom and Transformer in the running with the Iconia winning. I just plain didn't like the Xoom, but it was an Android device so it was considered. Contemplated the Transformer, but in visiting their forums, there seemed to be alot of problems with it. So Iconia it was, and the price was right as well!
I really wanted the HTC Flyer, but they don't have root yet and it's not officially available up in the north here =(. Would have been a fine collection to my HTC family, but alas it was not meant to be. I do like this Iconia though!

[Q] Convince me to go Advent

Ive just sold my Galaxy Tab and now have £250 to play with.
Should I get a Vega? they look pretty good.
What are peoples experiances with this tab? Speed? Gaming? Developement?
I see you guys have fully fledged Honeycomb and thats a big plus for me........
So go on.........Convince me!
Go for it! See if you can get a refurb on currys ebay page for £140, well worth it.
Honeycomb runs really well aside from the odd browser crash (fixed with opera if it's critical stuff) honeycomb is faster on the vega than the asus transformer I played with in currys! Games run brilliantly and my buddy with an ipad2s jaw hit the floor after I told him how much it cost!
Bear in mind the screen isn't very good with regard to viewing angles or sharpness but it's fine for books and browsing and the camera is balls! The tegra 2 is fast as hell though and makes my previously fast phone seem like its crawling.
Just get one you won't regret it!

For that amount of money it's either Archos 80 G9 or Advent Vega.
Well..........
I got one. A brand new shiny one. The refurbed ones seemed a bit batterd.
Straight outta the box it certainly seems snappier than my GTP1010 but the lack of full android features is dissapointing............good job its getting flashed tomorrow!
Im off to read up on how to's for my new vega but speaking from past experiance and previous devices I presume it goes along the lines of;
1. Root the device.
2. Install CWM as a recovery.
3. NANDROID THAT MOTHER!
4. Pick a Rom, (vegacomb me thinks), then flash away.
Correct me if im wrong with this devices processes.

Fellow galaxy owner hear. Thinking of a Vega myself.
Would you still recommend it?
Hell yes!
Flashed it to Vegacomb 3.2 today and its quite possibly the best android device.........dare I say it..........IVE EVER USED!
The only slight drawback is no GPS but there's a workaround for that by connecting a GPS reciever.
Its like a different machine from when it came out of the box.

If you have the GT P1010, go get a Vega now! Just due to lack of the devs.

i've had the A500 and spent long enough on a friends transformer and cant believe how well something so cheap runs honeycomb so well, though it might be down to having a lower res screen. wish it had gps n 3g too
Should I get a Vega? they look pretty good.
So go on.........Convince me![/QUOTE]
Wondering the same thing. Went into PC world to have some hands on, really torn between archos 80 g9 with its smaller screen but nicer feel and this?
the in store unit seemed to have quite a low res screen but is that just 2.2 stretched?
I love my Vega. I'm very happy that I sold my Sgt p1010 to get one.
They are much faster cos of the dual core. The screen is a 10.1er, plus the added bonus of having a cheap machine that has real HDMI support, plus a proper USB 2 port, plus it will run Honeycomb very well, plus it has a USB host mode for hard drives/xbox pads/mouse input/keyboard input.
Yes, you may be right about the screen. In my experience the viewing angles are poor unless youre bang in front of it. Big deal! I'm the only one using it! I've got a TV for if other people need to watch stuff!
If your are into reflashing something to get the best out of it, get one. Outta the box they are gash. But with a spare hour, a laptop and all the hard, excellent work done and provided by the Corvus/vegacomb/CM teams out there it will be a monster of a machine.
Go get one!
