Hi everyone,
I just got my Iconia A500 last night and so far I'm loving it!
I have a Dell Streak 5 as my "always with me device" and I previously had a ViewSonic gTablet, just to try the 10" form factor, but despite an active dev community, the gTab is plagued by software limitations. I was tired of hombrew ROMs that didn't work quite right.
So I spent the last few weeks combing the forums and comparison shopping to find the right tablet for me. LG Optimus Pad (G-Slate), Moto Xoom, Iconia and Eee Pad transformer were all in the running. After more hours than I like to think about, I settled on the A500.
It was the haptic feedback that put it past the Transformer for me.
Out of the box it's running Netflix, Plants vs. Zombies HD and everything else I need!
So happy! Now all I've got to do is grab the Huawei 3G drivers and I'm all set!

If you don't mind, i'll jump on to your thread as well. I was going to make one, but thought it might just be clutter =p.
Hello everyone, I got my new A500 earlier today! I look forward to being a part of this community. Once I get familiar with the device, I will probably hang around the general/Q&A sections of the forum. I couldn't believe how simple it was to root the device, have to give some koodos to Acer in that regard.
Like the OP, I was shopping around and had the Iconia, Xoom and Transformer in the running with the Iconia winning. I just plain didn't like the Xoom, but it was an Android device so it was considered. Contemplated the Transformer, but in visiting their forums, there seemed to be alot of problems with it. So Iconia it was, and the price was right as well!
I really wanted the HTC Flyer, but they don't have root yet and it's not officially available up in the north here =(. Would have been a fine collection to my HTC family, but alas it was not meant to be. I do like this Iconia though!

welcome to the iconia!!
user from day one here
Only issue I have with my iconia is that its not Pink.ohh and I had to pay for it myself.
Its a awesome device.
Take the time to read the forums and get to know the limitations and issues.like the whole bootloader encryption and work around.Do so before you jump into moding your tab.
Have fun.

Thanks for the warm welcome! My Iconia is the one device I wont be modding too much

How did you get netflix working out of the box? Have you actually tried streaming anything? I'm pretty sure it doesn't work without the patch.
Was wondering the same thing...

It was working, streaming and all, out if the box...

Then I did an OTA update to 3.1. Now streaming is broken, lol. I'll have to patch it tonight.

So I picked up a A500 yesterday off craigslist for $300.00 and wow! Coming from the viewsonic gtab this tablet is soooo nice! Absolutely loving it.
Honestly I'm not overly concerned that I do not see a lot of dev support for this tablet but I'm just curious on why not much is going on with it? Is it due to the locked bootloader?
For the price of this tablet and the build quality its a huge win in my book over other tablets.
Now I just wish someone would buy my gtab off craigslist

We just got a custom (partially working) recovery yesterday, so patience is still a virtue. Thus, no development (other than focusing on how to get past the bootloader issue) has really begun to occur yet.
also no kernel released from acer so far as i can tell.

Yeah, and there is that lousy fact too. Wish they would get it out already.
It seems to me being a long time android user on the cell phone side that manufacturers keeping their system open and unlocked is nothing but a plus for them. The geek community is massive on android and the more open it is the more geeks will flock to that device (hint hint Acer)
But none the less this is a fabulous tablet!
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
The locked bootloader is one (major) issue, although it appears that some of the devs have recently worked around it. I think the promised and impending 3.1 official update is another factor; once 3.1 is available I'd expect to see a bit more activity. Not a lot of purpose working on fixes for a version about to be replaced.
Hey guys.. im just a lil curious. I currently have a acer a500 and im kinda annoyed with acer support. When got me looking into returning it for an asus eee transformer, until I saw that this was released! Im im sure you guys are a little biased, but if you could have your choice of any pad would you buy the samsung again? my concern is mostly devs.... not a lot going on for the acer imo.

The choice is yours. If you want expandable storage, HDMI out, and save 100 bucks out of the box go with transformer. If you want a polished device all around, nice screen and have cash to burn on the things mentioned above - go with Samsung.

yeah the apparent lack of dev support and locked bootloader (at the time) is why I returned my A500. Decided there really wasn't much I really needed all those ports for personally. Tried to test drive a TF at Fry's but the touchscreen wouldn't respond even after i rebooted. When I pointed it out to sales guy he said that was the 2nd display that stopped working which I took as a bad sign. So far pretty happy with my decision because the GT is much easier to handle and I've seen quite a few familiar names dev-wise showing up here.

ya ive heard the TF flexes alot.... is the GT more solid feeling? thanks for the reply pretty much exactly what i was thinking and looking to confirm . as long as the 30pin samsung port works with 3g dongles and keyboards im happy!
I had the acer for a couple weeks, then this tab came out and I returned the acer. To me it was more about DEV, I figured we would see custom ROMs faster on theGalaxy.
Thee device itself is much lighter, faster, and I didnt use any of the ports.
I actually had to return two of the acers cause they just kept force closing an the hardware/build was sketchy.
I am totally happy with the tab

Is it more solid....if you mean does any part of it feel like it will come loose or feel cheap then no it just feels lighter than the A500 and Xoom. It seemed like people making an argument for the Xoom always equated its weight with a solid feel which I didn't understand. The A500 felt lighter but also felt more solid than the Xoom IMO.

How is the "bloatware" content and ease of rooting? I had an Iconia 500 (returned 'cause I was a little afraid of ****ty Acer support and lack of dev support) but the Acer had a minimum of bloat and root was dead easy.

There are only two apps from Samsung prepossessing, a music market app (Music Hub) and Samsung's own market app. Rooting isn't one click or accomplished via an apk like Gingerbreak on the Acer (which I think I read doesn't even work on the 3.1 update). If you have a little experience with ADB and using a command prompt you prob won't find it difficult to root. The only issue I had was getting the Samsung drivers installed but that was more of an annoyance than anything else. The instructions are really pretty straightforward. I think someone is working on a script to run the root commands but I haven't seen it yet.

returned my acer and got a samsung 16gig 10.1 today... little sad that my bootloader is locked but eah im sure with time this will get fixed. my acer was faster and no lag like my samsung does, but the samsung has more potential imo.
As an owner of both the Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at the moment (will return one soon), I can give you some unbiased advice.
The Galaxy Tab is definitely the better tablet, as is. Meaning if you're not looking to spend any more money after you've paid for the tablet, you'll get the better tablet with the Galaxy Tab (of course, it's $100 more). The build quality is superior. It's thinner/light etc.
However, if you're looking for a tablet with more hardware features, then the Asus Transformer is obviously the clear winner.
The only concern I have with the Galaxy Tab is support from Samsung. Asus have been nothing but awesome. 3.1 firmware 3 weeks after announcement then kernel source shortly after. The Galaxy Tab came out with 3.1 so no idea how it will turn out... I haven't had a chance to own any Samsung phone but I've heard horror stories regarding Samsung's support. But I'm sure we'll have xda's excellent communities to help out with either tablet.
Ive just sold my Galaxy Tab and now have £250 to play with.
Should I get a Vega? they look pretty good.
What are peoples experiances with this tab? Speed? Gaming? Developement?
I see you guys have fully fledged Honeycomb and thats a big plus for me........
So go on.........Convince me!
Go for it! See if you can get a refurb on currys ebay page for £140, well worth it.
Honeycomb runs really well aside from the odd browser crash (fixed with opera if it's critical stuff) honeycomb is faster on the vega than the asus transformer I played with in currys! Games run brilliantly and my buddy with an ipad2s jaw hit the floor after I told him how much it cost!
Bear in mind the screen isn't very good with regard to viewing angles or sharpness but it's fine for books and browsing and the camera is balls! The tegra 2 is fast as hell though and makes my previously fast phone seem like its crawling.
Just get one you won't regret it!

For that amount of money it's either Archos 80 G9 or Advent Vega.
Well..........
I got one. A brand new shiny one. The refurbed ones seemed a bit batterd.
Straight outta the box it certainly seems snappier than my GTP1010 but the lack of full android features is dissapointing............good job its getting flashed tomorrow!
Im off to read up on how to's for my new vega but speaking from past experiance and previous devices I presume it goes along the lines of;
1. Root the device.
2. Install CWM as a recovery.
3. NANDROID THAT MOTHER!
4. Pick a Rom, (vegacomb me thinks), then flash away.
Correct me if im wrong with this devices processes.

Fellow galaxy owner hear. Thinking of a Vega myself.
Would you still recommend it?
Hell yes!
Flashed it to Vegacomb 3.2 today and its quite possibly the best android device.........dare I say it..........IVE EVER USED!
The only slight drawback is no GPS but there's a workaround for that by connecting a GPS reciever.
Its like a different machine from when it came out of the box.
Are you a GTP 1000 or a GT P1010 owner?
If you have the GT P1010, go get a Vega now! Just due to lack of the devs.

Surely you dont mean Leigh... for a town that has no electricity (jk) the local currys had a few Vegas in stock last week.
i've had the A500 and spent long enough on a friends transformer and cant believe how well something so cheap runs honeycomb so well, though it might be down to having a lower res screen. wish it had gps n 3g too

Wondering the same thing. Went into PC world to have some hands on, really torn between archos 80 g9 with its smaller screen but nicer feel and this?
the in store unit seemed to have quite a low res screen but is that just 2.2 stretched?
I love my Vega. I'm very happy that I sold my Sgt p1010 to get one.
They are much faster cos of the dual core. The screen is a 10.1er, plus the added bonus of having a cheap machine that has real HDMI support, plus a proper USB 2 port, plus it will run Honeycomb very well, plus it has a USB host mode for hard drives/xbox pads/mouse input/keyboard input.
Yes, you may be right about the screen. In my experience the viewing angles are poor unless youre bang in front of it. Big deal! I'm the only one using it! I've got a TV for if other people need to watch stuff!
If your are into reflashing something to get the best out of it, get one. Outta the box they are gash. But with a spare hour, a laptop and all the hard, excellent work done and provided by the Corvus/vegacomb/CM teams out there it will be a monster of a machine.
Go get one!

Mic isn't bad at all, just not very loud... Some voice chat programs (including skype and gtalk, unfortunately) mess things up, though, giving you weird background noises (not on all devices, though, it works for me). Other than that, the Acer devices are very well worth their money.

If you Google Acer A700 you'll see that the specs on that tab have been out for awhile. I'll be waiting to see if Acer delivers ICS to this tab first. If they drop support on this tab, there's no way in h3ll I'll be purchasing another Acer tab. If they do give us ICS on our tabs, I'll be grabbing the A700, as it seems it's going to be the best "bang for the buck" among the 2012 tabs

I agree 120% with this .. I have a birthday coming in MAY .. Giggles..
if my a500 does not get the support it should.. i might just wait and get a win 8 arm tablet.. and Dual Boot it .but there is always battery issues with windows . we will see what the tech word brings us in 2012.. for now my a 500 meets all the HAVE to have needs.. as if i really NEED a tablet.
Acer always seems to be giving the best bang for your buck, whether it is laptops or not tablets.
One gripe I have against acer is their bloatware. Some may like it but others (like myself) can't stand it.
Also keep in mind that acer is releasing the A200 soon. It's pretty much the same spec wise as the A500 but apparently has no rear facing camera. The pricing looks quite attractive though. I'm still happy with my A500. I actually have no desire to replace it with something newer and better, and I usually drool over the latest and greatest in technology.
I've had an a500 since november and the build quality is great. They have been providing adequate updates so far, and I expect them to provide ICS, but we will see.
Ive been wanting to get a second tablet bc my daughter always has this one and wouldn't hesitate to buy another acer.
Other than build quality ill be looking at development on market app as well as on xda
Gameloft and other game developers choose a500 as a flag ship for development another reason I choose this tablet over Asus, Samsung, and Mototrola. I contacted Gameloft before I picked up a 10.1 tablet around September and asked them what tablet to pick up they told me Acer Iconia because Acer has been the only company that was helping them out the most with developmental needs.. so of course when I went to best buy they were out of a500s and I had 300 bucks from trading in my Droid incredible and I didn't want to wait so I picked up the thrive because of the nice stuff included with it.. but ended up having nothing as far as xda & others so picked up tf101 loved it but it kept slipping out of my hands.. lol so bestbuy finally called me to tell me the Acer was in so I picked it up answer fell in love with it. So that my awesome story and we lived happily ever after
So I will most likely pick up Acer if top devs do aswell.

Thanks for the replies guys! I still have plenty of time to think this over. Acer is definitely a huge choice now though, and I like this community, way friendlier than the original Asus Transformer. Back before the Prime came out, I made a thread like this, asking about Asus and what to expect in the tablets, and it was immediately hostile responses. Terrible, but glad I didn't have enough to buy that Prime, so much bad reports about it. My choices are now this A700, thanks to your responses and some research, and the Asus TF700T.

Lol your welcome too root is simple as long as u dont update u will just install an app that do it 4 you but if you dont know much about rooting you better search thses forums

The Acer bootloader does some checksumming and stuff that makes rooting hard on the newer FWs, but there's a rooting method around that works (downgrading isn't much of a problem). As has been said, just use the search.
Alright, I was just wondering though, different company's products usually have completely different rooting methods than others; I've only ever rooted all my HTC phones, but thanks.

Just thought some would find this info helpful..
UPDATE: Looks like this is indeed the A700. The folks at The Verge managed to find the new Iconia Tab lounging around in Vegas and discovered that it's packing a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as the aforementioned 1080p display. It's also got Bluetooth support, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI port. As far as release details go, the A700 is said to be landing sometime in the second quarter, but no other specific launch information is known just yet.
Hey everybody here's the deal I got my acer now for about 1 week I like it very much but I am saddened in the lack of development and support for It.
Plus I am very unhappy with the screen viewing angles on it and I heard the kindle does not have these issues.
As for the gps I tried it a handful of times and it doesn't really ever work or find my location so that's not a big deal to me since I heard the kindle does not have gps.
Basically all I got this tablet for is internet surfing facebook the typical things.
This is my first time using honey calm and I like it but I see I could install any type of launcher on a rooted kindle and have the same thing.
So what is everyone opinion should I get rid of this for the kindle or should I keep it and say screw the kindle what do you think?
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk
I don't have the A100 to compare it with my KF, development wise the Devs are putting in some time and ICS is improving by the week. I would suggest finding someone with KF running ICS or CM7 to compare, as for me am very happy with mine ( ICS).
I'm a huge Ics fan boy, using it on my Nexus S right now.

support is usually a big deal for me.
but as far as features go the acer seems to have the upper hand. with bluetooth (working with no prob) cam and micro hdmi.
price doesnt seem to be an issue since you already have the acer and its a little more.
if your not happy with the way the acer is and cant find a launcher you like, try the kindle. or see if you can find someone to trade with.
i sometimes wonder what it would be like if i got a cheap tab instead of my fire.

I agree about the acer being more "feature packed", but I don't think I'll really ever use any of those features, maybe some pictures with the cam but that's about it.
Good idea with the launcher. I'll check that out..
I just hate that the kindle fire at any store is stuck in demo mode so I can't really play around like I really want to

Love mine. I bought it solely as an internet appliance and rooted it and installed CM7 two days after I got it. I, too, saw no need for GPS/BT/camera on a tablet. I have a phone (DInc; upgrading shortly, probably GNex) for all of that.

I hear ya about the demo mode at the stores, what is that. You can play around with the nook but not the fire. Its just not fair. Lol.
The only thing i might use would be the Bluetooth, and that would be for gaming with controllers, via sixaxis or the wiimote.
Not to mention you could use the keyboard attachment.

Walmart will soon be offering a $50 gift card with the purchase of the KF.
Forget trying it in the stores, buy it from there or Best Buy and and see how you feel about it.
I sent the A100 packing. I didn't like the screen resolution for one and also having to hold it at a "sweetspot" angle to get the best viewing experience. The KF's screen smokes the A100!
I didn't root it either. I just installed Go Launcher EX to get away from the stock carousel and also changed the theme to Classic For Go Launcher and also I have Dolphin Browser HD! Pretty neat for a newb to mess with and also there are plenty of alternate app stores to get APK files from to download to the KF!!
Well I got my mind made up and the tablet will be going back, along with that stupid mobile broadband card I got to get the hundred off lol.
I'll be waiting for the kfire to be sold at walmart with the 50 dollar gift card.

I bought my daughter the fire on Sunday st 12:05 am at Walmart, and am returning the coby I bought last week. Kindle fire is just so much more powerful although a little heavier than Coby, but worth it and with the extra $50

Got a Fire today (and got the $50 gift card promo).
Not 100% sure if I'll keep it because I really wanted a 10" tab, but for the price I had to check this out. Looks like there is good dev happening here which is always good to see.
