I broke my phone recently and the touch screen is no longer working. I was wondering if there was a way to control my phone via PC w/o active sync. Or if there was a way to enable active sync on my phone some other way as I'm not able to control my phone.
You don't need to activate ActiveSync on the phone - it just runs.
If it doesn't connect via ActiveSync when you connect it to the PC then you may be out of luck, but it's likely to be your PC that has an issue, not your phone.
As of right now when pluuged in via usb my phone is recognized as a storage drive instead. And it gives me the option for active sync but I'm not able to change it.
Ah right - it's set to default to USB on your phone then. That's a bugger, as you can't change it without using the screen.
You could flash another ROM, which would then have ActiveSync as the default USB connection type, but you would obviously lose all your data and apps.
You're obviously gonna have to get the phone fixed or replaced in the long-run. Is that out of the question at the minute?
I'm definitely going to have the phone repaired some time soon but money is a little tight at the moment being a college student etc.
But about running a new rom... are you for certain that active sync will be set as default is a new rom is installed?
I'm willing to test that out
Yes mate. It's the 1st in the list and is selected by default. It pops up the dialog asking how you want to use the USB connection and uses the selected one after a few seconds.
It will definitely allow you to use MyPhoner, or similar.
I see okay perfect! However, wouldn't installing a new ROM need me to be connected through active sync? Haha
No when u first boot press the volume down (aside button but down) it will let u boot into bootloader then happily flash , use steve0007 rom best one...
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
As tarekkkkk said, hold down the volume down button when you turn the phone on and it will go into bootloader mode. You should be able to install a new ROM from there.
Perfection! Thank you so much, i was able to install a new rom and make it auto boot into Android. Now I can just use droidexplorer to control my phone! Appreciate the help!

hi forum...
I have an imate JJ & have been using it for 3 months now..
all of a sudden it refuses to synchronize with my laptop.
I tried the following but didn't wrk:
1) deleting the existing partnership.
2) uninstalling & reinstalling activesync.
3) tried installing both activesyncs( the one which came along in the cd & the one we have on our ftp).
4) hard resetted my device.
none of the above have solved the problem. my pc does recognize the ppc as a lan connection as it should. the activesync green icon in the taskbar also goes green && starts rotating, but it just keeps saying "Connecting" but never actually connects..
Please Help Me..
Thanx,

Hey,
Pune huh? Which part of Pune? I used to stay in Wanowrie Was a student at BVP Medical University.
Anyhoo, when you reinstall AS, make sure its on a drive different from the original install. Also make sure your firewall's are disabled (even the native SP2 firewall).
Hopefully, it should sync properly now. Let us know if it doesn't and we'll help you sort it out
Cheers.
Did you clear the notifications or something? If you used pocket mechanic or the like and delete one of them AS don't (& won't) work until you HR again, afaik.
Joe
that is correct. you can verify it by manually starting repllog on the PDA while ActiveSync tries to connect

I screwed up my AS on my JasJar doing some foolish & ignorant cleaning with ScareyBear's CheckNotifications, but was able to re-enable AS using this tool (no hard reset needed)!

Syncing through bluetooth is not an option as my laptop has a builtin bt with toshiba drivers which doesn't allow me to sync. && i'd rather not overwrite the toshiba stack with the widcomm... don't wanna add a prob to my laptop to remove one from my ppc...
is there any foolproof way of getting back at syncing thru usb?

Guys...
Activesync still not happening...
Pls help
When I got this problem, it was due to synchronising something it didnt want to sync, namely favourites and web pages. Try changing your sync settings to say just contacts, then just calendar, then just tasks etc... and work down the list until you identify the problem.
I would guess its your favourites.
let me know, and we will commence a fact find and test process for alternatives 1 by 1.
Activesync problem
Open Activsync but Don't turn your XDA EXEC on before you plug in the USB. Let acivsync turn the device on then give it a minute to find the changes. Hope this helps.

Did you try installing the tool I linked to above? I've attached it to this post, it helped me restore AS when I somehow deleted it off my device.
I sync via bluetooth since i had those problems as well, and NO problems since then. Moreover, using BT is much much faster, at least for me.
recommend.
gotta love it when you try to help, offer multiple suggestions to some dude pleading for assistance multiple times, then get zero feedback as to the effectiveness of the fix (s) offered.
hey "morphosin" what was the outcome, all fixed?

Sorry for the late reply dude...
I tried all possible solutions including your last given solution of trying to remove favorites... The problem is that On a fresh install of activesync, it doesnt even take me t the window where i choose my syncing options. It just keeps going green & round & says connecting. I manually tried to go to options through the menubar but everything except help is grey(disabled).
As for alnwick's suggestion.. I always have been doing that. Even on my Himalaya when i had Magneto, i used to switch off the device & let activesync wake it up.. It always helped but not in this condition... Dunno why... Its really sad that two M$ OS have so muchanimosity between em...
Is there any other solution that strikes u guys?
Hey Simon.. Really sorry buddy... I do appreciate all your guys help ALOTTTT... only problem is that my work hasnt been allowing me to be regular for last couple of days...
Thanx all for ur precious time....
Always

PS : Problem not solved as yet
Hi,
I have the same problem with my Exec too. However it doesn't happen so often. Probably once in every 10 successful sync. I always managed to fix it using the "old-fashion" manner.
1. Unplug your USB from your Exec
2. Reset your computer
3. Plug it in again once your computer has finish booting the OS.
It is pretty basic and I guess that you have already tried it yet. It works for me all the time when I do so. Sometimes I wonder whether could it be the USB connector on the Exec that is faulty or my computer USB port or the cable.
Hope your Exec will be up and running properly again.
Regards,
Johnnie

Hey Johnnie...
Thanx alot for the suggestion buddy.. Unfortunately, i tried that long time ago... Also, in my case atleast it cannot be the h/w (USB Connectors on ppc or pc or the cable) as i used to sync absolutely fine with 100% hitrate. Infact, every time u have a problem try this buddy :
1) Go to task manager of ur ppc & turn off everything.
2) Switch off ur exec.
3) Attach cable & allow the activesync to wake up your device.
It might increase your hitrate.
For all the other kind souls here...
I am attaching a snapshot of how my activesync window looks while it is trying to connect.
Thanx All

I have similar problem: Activesync tries to connect and after some time it says, it could not connect.
When I make a reset with the reset button, it works again for some time.
hmmm, what could it be?
Hey guys,
i've got a very big problem.
I dont know why but every time i connect my Blackstone to the Computer it always open the "Internet Sharing" thing. Ive changed it over "Settings" back to Sync (and in settings/connections/USB to PC, check "Ask me first about USB connection type when I connect the device to the PC" also), but no change.
Then i canged in the registry the following key "HKLM\Software\HTC\USBToPCPopUP\" DWORD: OnlyTwoChoice=1
now the HTC Popup with the option "Sync" and "HDD" show up, but when i choose Sync it doesent connect and sync.
I want my three Options back and want the option that i can choose out of "Sync" "HDD" and "Internet Sharing"
Thank you
greetz
I started getting this problem when I used the Internet Sharing option for the first time. From then on it would automatically try IS instead of Activesysnc, no matter what I did.
I solved it by unticking the Enable faster data syncronization box in USB to PC tab, but this results in a clunky pile of tabs that come up when connecting to the PC.
Unticking the "Enable faster data syncronization" box in USB to PC tab, doesent solve the problem
Hello
I got the same problem where I did not get the "3 choices" screen while connecting to usb, and IS by default...
I just deleted all keys in the registry under //HKLM\Software\HTC\USBToPCPopUP\
and it went back to normal....
Hope it will the same for you..
I have the same problem since a while, but haven't found a solution yet... starting to get a little desperate...

I guess you mean the registry on the device itself?
I been looking for that, but it looks i don't have this //HKLM\Software\HTC\USBToPCPopUP\...
in fact, i'm facing the exact same problem as described in this htcforum.com post:
"http://www.htcforums.com/post5958.html#p5958" (yes, i posted there too )
i'm pretty sure the problem is NOT pc-related, the data-connection fails at every possible system i tested it with (ranging from xp to vista to ubuntu to osX), at least the usb-diskmode worked before on all these systems before... not anymore...
the answer of HTC support wasn't of much help either:
Dear valued HTC customer, Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns. You recently wrote us about an issue that you have encountered with your device. To clarify your issue, you stated that you were unable to connect your device to the PC. . For this you will need a full version of Microsoft Outlook 2003 or newer and Microsoft Activesync for Windows XP or Windows Mobile Device Centre for Vista. Once these are installed simply connect your device to your PC and it will transfer your details to your PC. I hope this is of help to you. If you need any further help we recommend calling for a direct guidance on these steps for synchronising. If the above steps do not resolve your issue, we invite you to visit the support area on our Web site.

i suspect them of not even reading about my problem, and just firing some default answer back... not really helpfull.
so i keep looking around for possible solutions for now.
I'm seriously thinking to make use of the warranty, but hate to lose the device for a long periode... anybody has experience with that?
another PCtoUSB problem, i get all 3 options, HDD and Internet Work perfectly, ActiveSync however doesn't. Vista recognizes it as a USB Pocket PC, but Vista Sync Center and WMDC do not, nothing. On HTC i get the charging icon, but not the Sync icon. Also in the ActiveSync --> Connections menu i have "Sync all PCs using this connection:" ticked, however the drop down menu is empty, nothing to select.
in the ActiveSync start screen there's just the fake Microsoft Exchange account, nothing else
Everything was working fine till few days ago :/

I tried this but still get ICS opening when I connect my device up. It is driving me mad now trying to sort this - I may even resort to a hard reset before the end of the weekend.
The only way I can get sync to work is to disable the faster data sync option.
hmm, every system i test with gives the same result:
the htc device does charge, but the usb data-connection never works...
could it be a faulty connector?

I have the same problem and the above method solves the problem
Hope it helps.
Hi guys,
ive dug around for an hour trying to find an answer to this but no joy.
Normally, when i connect my HD to the computer i get asked whether i want to use active sync, view the memory card for faster transfers, or use internet connection sharing.
Since ive been tweaking my rom and loading latest tomtom maps, i used the 2nd option. Everything works fine.
Now i want to sync my phone again, but the options dont come up anymore. I can see the memory card and transfer files, but cant it to sync.
I get the feeling i checked the box that says "dont ask me this question anymore". But now i want to be asked again! lol. Or be able to change the mode with a switch if possible. Cant see anything like that under the communications manager.
I tried pressing the sync button on both PC and the HD when connected but i get no response from either.
Any ideas? Pretty please?
Im using Energy ROM WM6.5.
Thanks very much.
simple steps: Start -> Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC, then select the option you want to use. hope this helps.
As above, thread closed
p.s. Your getting good at this Cortez.i
Hi Guys
Got a bit of a strange problem, I've got an XDA Orbit 2 (HTC Polaris) in which I have recently flashed with 3kostas244 rom. The rom is fine and works great on the device, however, my touchscreen has recently stopped responding and I have a password on the device, because of this I can't pair it to my pc through activesync. I think the screen may be related to a software problem but I'm unable to put the device into boot loader mode so that I can reflash it. Since I updated the Hard SPL to SPL-V2, the hard reset no longer works.
Has anyone got any ideas on how I could reflash this?
All the best.
Try MyMobiler
You don't have to pair the device ... you just need an activesync conection.
http://mymobiler.com/
It's like a remote controll to you Orbit2.
You can controll it with you rpc mouse and keyboard.
good luck

Heya, I did consider that, however I'm unable I need to have a connection to activsyn to get the client installed on the phone, which it won't :-( think I might be at a loss this one, but thanks anyway.

When My Mobiler picks up a Winmo device, it installs auto
yeah it does normally unless you have a password lock on the screen, by which point you need to unlock it so it can talk to activesync, seeing as the screen is broken because of software, thats a no go.

try this:
press and hold the camera button and reset with stylus
now you are in bootloader mode (3colour mode) plug usb cable on and reflash the rom you want
I have a Touch HD that has a faulty touchscreen which doesn't recognise screen presses.
It's going to go back as faulty and should be replaced however I need to get the contacts off the device before it's sent back.
When I connect the Touch HD to a PC it defaults to internet connection sharing and I can read the sd card as a removable drive.
Is there any way to way to change the default connection method to activesync without using the touchscreen, all other buttons work?
Is there any way of remotely controlling the Touch HD from a pc?
I've arranged for the phone to collected for warranty but realised that I don't have some of the numbers off it so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion but unless I'm mistaken they rely upon connecting the phone to the pc via activesync and unfortunately I can't do this because when you connect the phone it remembers and defaults to the last connection type which was as a modem not as active sync.
If anyone knows a way of reseting this via the pc and sd card or using the other buttons such as volume up, down and power then please let me know.

Unless I'm missing something doing this allows access to the storage card as a removable drive but nothing else as the phone doesn't go into active sync mode unless you select it on the screen and I can't do that.
Is it possible to write and execute a function to the sd card (perhaps even autorun) that changes the default option on the phone to active sync?
hmm, that's a tough one, but I have an idea.
One thought that came to mind is to install My Mobiler on your PC. That allows you to control the HD via the mouse on the PC. Of course, it requires the active sync connection that you are trying to get to - so it doesn't really help.... EXCEPT that in your case, it might.
Normally, MyMobiler only connects when the phone is using activesync. However, when the phone is set to "share internet connection", My Mobiler attempts to connect to the phone anyway. If the phone is NOT able to connect to the internet (via 3G etc) then My Mobiler is successful in connecting to the phone. If the phone is able to connect to the internet, then My Mobiler does not connect to the phone.
So, try this.
Turn the phone off and take out the SIM card (that way the phone will not be able to connect to the internet).
Turn the phone on and wait until it is all booted up.
Plug it into the PC via USB.
In your case, it will connect as "share internet".
On your PC, open My Mobiler and wait for it to connect to the phone (it might install it on your phone for the first time too). Once you see your phone's screen on the My Mobiler window, you can control the phone via your mouse.
On the phone (via mouse), go to:
Start > settings (if on HTC Sense, then Settings tab > Menu > all settings)
Now go to connections > usb to pc
This might all vary depending on the ROM you are using, but the general idea should be correct.
There you can change the settings for how the phone connects when plugged in via usb. You can set it to always connect via active sync. Then, the next time you plug in your phone, active sync should start and you should be able to backup your contacts as usual or delete them off the phone etc.
I tested the steps and it worked. I hope it works for you. Let me know.
EDIT:
If My Mobiler still will not connect, you can change the settings of My Mobiler so that it will connect with the phone via IP instead of active sync.
To do so, in My Mobiler, go to "File > open settings" and scroll almost to the bottom of that text file to find where you would need to change the settings.
