I currently have a incredible and might be buying a droid x on craigslist.
Can i just activate the Droid x for a few days and then switch back to my incredible every so often and go back and forth ?
I dont want to spend the extra money on another line, but im a phone whore and love to try out different phones.
Using the VZW website with your account, you can change the MEID # that is used for your account pretty much on the fly. As long as the device is in the same class there should be no problem.
I used to do this a bunch between two Omnia i910's so that I could test flash updates on a test phone without screwing up my real work one on the same account.
Been a while since I've done that, but I know the feature to switch is still there and you don't need to call in like in the old days to get them to switch.

I did that a couple of months ago when I lost my Incredible and had to use my...ugh...Storm. It was a piece of cake.
Is this different front just dialing *228? I have a droid 2 that I want to keep switching to... where do I find this on the VZW site?
Sent from my Droid Incredible using Tapatalk
Just use *228 and leave the computer out of the equation. Just put the phone your currently using in airplane mode and dial *228 on the device your going to.
I do this VERY regularly between my incredible and my eris. I rooted and disabled the camera on the eris so i can bring it to work, but love my incredible and camera so i switch back after work. Takes 2 minutes and never has cost me a thing in the monthes ive been doing it.

So my friend found someone's lost Droid 2 and wanted me to fix it for him. He wants it so he can take it to Verizon as if he had bought it and have it activated. It's locked, as in no service. He already did a factory reset.
Where do I look now? What exactly do I look for? I can figure out how to root it easy enough but after that I'm lost on what to do..

Return to Verizon. The person who lost it probably reported it by now and Verizon blacklisted the ESN number or whatever. It's no good.
It's Christmas time dude, someone is probably really upset that they lost that phone. Do the noble thing and return it.
I am sure the person that lost the phone has all the family photos, family and friends numbers on it. Too bad that your friend didn't look up the number and try to return the phone..
Please put yourself in that person shoes. ...God Bless you(for helping your friend doing the evil thing) and most of all for your friend for not returning the phone to the owner.
Also just to add a personal experience:
I found a phone on the ground at a concert once, called the last number dialed in it and found out who it belonged to. Turned out to belong to the guitarist for the headlining band. Me and my gf got brought backstage, had an amazing party and got a ton of free ****.
However, if you do decide not to return it, I'm sure a few devs out there would love to get in touch with you to get the phone from you, namely people like blackdroid and cvpcs, who are currently working on D2 ROMs but don't have a device to test builds on. To those guys it doesn't matter as much if the phone is blacklisted, as it can still be used for development.
However, you should make an effort to return it to it's original owner, as there is no way you will be able to use the phone for service through verizon at this point.

That's awesome dude!
He found it weeks ago and just now.got it to me. He long since formatted it so all info was lost. I don't think he will be trying to return it.
Is there anything that can be done software wise? Or would the hardware unique to the phone make this impossible?

It's useless as a phone on Verizon. They block the ESN of the phone once it's reported lost/stolen and won't allow it on the network regardless of what you do to the software. You need better friends. Just because you find something doesn't make it yours. Especially when it's something like a phone that contains the owners contact info in it.
Yeah. Well thanks for the help.

I agree w/ others on here that it would still be. Est to try to return it or to donate to a rom dev...
But how about bypassing the reg when you boot the phone and setting it up for making calls on wifi via skype or google voice? Should still be useful as a tablet computer, if anything.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I think the right thing to do is to return it to a Verizon store and let them find the owner for you (they can look up the ESN and see the history of it and find the person that way).
But if you plan to keep it, you might wait until folks have successfully unlocked the SIM card and use it on a different network. Chances are Verizon can't blacklist the phone for AT&T or T-Mobile purposes.
You could either return it to verizon, give it to a dev for testing purposes, or sell it as blacklisted for parts on Ebay.
I'd go with option number 2 actually. it might end up helping you out in the long run if you have a D2 yourself.
I work at verizon I can look up the esn if you want
Just bring it to a verizon and say you found it. This is a very expensive phone and is most likely blacklisted. My aunt turned in a lost phone to a verizon store and got a credit from the manager. Your decency may pay off.
tell your friend to be nice and return it to verizon.
Lost my Droidx, never got it back

Really???? I have to ask, do you have a Droid 2 for Verizon? Have you seen a sim card?
Just an FYI, Droid 2 uses CDMA and T-Mobile and at&t use gsm. Two totally different frequencies, and the Droid 2 will never work with either of them.

cool your jets broski, he just confused it for a droid 2 global which, in fact, DOES have a sim card slot.
Technically the droid 2 has a sim card slot aswell it's just blocked by a piece of plastic glued to the top of the battery contacts and there aren't actual sim/GSM hardware but there is a slot for it.

Yup, I did (that's the phone I have). My bad.
I have been regretting having only 16gb of storage on my moto X since all my other android items have 32gb and I somehow manage to burn through the 16gb all the time. I have also not had any luck getting root back since upgrading to 4.4 and am pretty bummed that no one has figured out how to unlock the bootloader. Has anyone ditched their basic 16gb moto x for a 32gb Dev edition? I am thinking it might be worth the extra hundred dollars or so since moto is having a sale on them. Vote and help decide the fate of my phone!:good:
I just did exactly what you are pondering and I'm happy with my decision. Took advantage of the recent $100 off deal to get my DE for $350, and I'll be selling my 16GB once I switch it over.
32gb not enough for me. Need 64gb or better yet 128gb. I'd settle for 32gb internal with micro SD card slot.

Another line on our Verizon account was eligible for an upgrade, I have unlimited still. Upgraded the other line at a big box store to a 16GB for $1, swapped devices, purchased dev edition, activated, sold 16GB, sold the old Droid X and the net was $107 for a DE, other family member got an upgrade from Droid X to Gnex, and a 2 year renewed contract for them and I got to keep unlimited.
I'd sell it for the DE any day; double the memory, unlockable with warranty, easy everything. Super happy with my Verizon DE. Then again, I only had a standard black/woven black 16GB for less than 24 hours.
For 50 bucks more I'd get a DE without question. But I'm in Canada, so I got the regular X...but I'm extremely happy. And I'd never need 32gb....but that's me.
I'd still have gotten the DE tho....if I could have.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
I think the dev edition is worth it. Especially if you need 32gb. The unlocked bootloader is also great since you never have to worry about root getting locked down.
People keep talking like rooting and stuff is easier and/or better on the DE. LOL. Its no different in that way whatsoever than any other x that you can unlock the boot loader.
Exactly the same everything. Only difference is warranty stays in tact....otherwise no different than any other unlockable X.

And why anyone would buy them is beyond me. Buy a used or new one from another carrier...and use it on those networks if you really want to be with them.
Never would I buy a phone I can't unlock. No way.

Keeping in mind I'm not talking about the 99.5 percent of their customers that have never heard of rooting.
But us.....the 0.5 percent ....why would any of us buy an unlockable phone. May as well get an iPhone then. LOL
K....I take back the iPhone joke. The Moto x is better than iPhone out of the box.

Rooting is easier on DE and/or gsm version with unlockable bootloader. I was so frustrated at the root methods not working and the extra hoop jumping and troubleshooting I said screw the warranty. I need my root. Android is worthless to me without it.

Probably stop buying from those useless morons who also put their ugly crappy logo on the phones. Unlocked GSM version baby.
32+ gigs and unlockable bootloader. Developer edition or not, those are things I would never compromise on any phone. Even if the phone came rooted out of the box, having an unlocked bootloader gives you the freedom to modify things you otherwise could not or should not. It's almost like asking freedom vs imprisonment., actually it's exactly like that.

Yes, useless morons with the best coverage, and logo's I couldn't care less about.
After moving from Verizon to T-Mobile I can honestly say their coverage is overrated, but I think his point was to buy Dev editions from Motorola and you wouldn't have these issues. I would have gotten a Verizon Dev edition until Verizon explained that even If I buy a phone cash I still have to pay their overpriced monthly charges including subsidies for phones I bought years ago. Screw that. T-Mobile all day every day the savings is worth it.

F*ck XDA can be full of dicks sometimes.
'
What if he gets NO service anywhere around him other than with Verizon, "nah bro, just get the T-Mo one anyway" sh*t ton of good a phone with no service is.
Again...if I had to use Verizon say.....I'd get DE edition...or buy another compatible carriers phone and sim unlock it. I'd never own a phone I couldn't unlock. But that's just me.

You will get the update at the same time the Verizon Developer Edition gets it. 4.4.2 hasn't been pushed to Verizon customers yet. Since Verizon is CDMA, we have to wait for the Verizon 4.4.2 to be released.
If you bought your Moto X from Verizon or Moto Maker, there is no way to unlock the bootloader. If you want a Verizon Dev Ed and have an upgrade available, check out my thread about a Free Verizon Dev Ed using an upgrade. Takes some work, but can be done.
How to Get a FREE Verizon Dev Ed if You Have an Upgrade Available
You could sell your current Moto X, too on swappa after you get your Verizon Dev Ed.
Thanks for the info Cozume, I'll just have to be patient.

All the Verizon X's use the same rom... Developer, Moto Maker, Retail, they use the same rom.
Only real difference is that the Dev Ed comes only with black face, woven white back, and silver button/accents, and last but certainly most important is its bootloader can be unlocked for easy rooting and developing.
The Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon can't have their bootloaders unlocked. I've read posts saying its due to eFuse, which can't be undone, but don't quote me on that.
Sell it and buy one. Only way it'll happen.

Just ordered it on eBay. As far as I know, it's unlocked and does not have the Verizon logo. Will I be able to root it?
I've read great reviews on this phone, and hence ordered it. But, the overall picture on this forum looks grim.
What do I need to know? What are the first things I should do after getting it?

If it's unlocked and does not have the Version logo then its the moto force x , and yes you can root it , droid turbo 2 does not have root.

Hopefully you've ordered Moto X Force. First charge it, put your sim, sd card (if you have), turn it on, install apps and enjoy. If you you wish, you can unlock bootloader first. Because procedure will do factory reset your phone but I have Force for about half of the year and this is my very first Android phone, including nexus, running stock, locked bl and no rooted.
I think we are in the same boat.
I bought the Droid Turbo 2 on Ebay from a Chinese seller. He said it's factory unlocked and It isn't the Verizon version.
Looking at the details it looks like Droid Turbo 2(xt1585 and bands are not as X Force).
I don't know if they are selling X Force as Droid Turbo 2 or they get the Verizon phore direct from factory without the logo but this put me think on what about updates.
What is in about? Maybe they got them directly from factory.
