Luckiest Android User Ever

So I was helping a customer today (I'm a Tmo Employee) with their rate plans and then started talking to him about some phones. Well he pulls out a Nexus One out of one of the stock N1 pouches and told me he FOUND this (who the hell finds free stuff like this?!) and wanted to check if it was a Tmo or ATT version because his internet wasn't working. I verified it was a Tmo version and it wasn't working for him because he had the Blackberry internet on his plan. When I asked if he wanted to change it he was like oh no I like my Blackberry. Then here is how the next part went.
Guy: Do you know anybody that would want to buy this?
Me: As a matter of fact, I'll be glad to take it.
Guy: How about $200?
Me: How about I go to the ATM next door RIGHT NOW!
So now I'm the owner of another N1 so this one goes to my GF. Buuuuuut the best part is, it isn't just the normal one. This one has the picture of the Android waving a flag on the back with no HTC branding. Hmmmmmmm...

Just bought your self a brand new stolen ('found' is an alternative word for stolen) N1 Concrats! It's the best device with Android!

so let me translate for you.

I'm thinking it could be a Beta phone or something? Looks like one of the ones that Google employees were given and were not supposed to "sell" BUT I have heard of some that have been "lost" from employees and were bought from people. But the phone had no SIM card and looked wiped when I got it. Was at the stock 2.1 home screen.
The guy didn't "look" like he stole it. Nice guy, wife, 2 young kids. I'm pretty sure the guy found it somewhere.

Grats on buying stolen goods. Not the smartest thing to brag about, either.

Maybe i said it wrong but i meant in this sentence it's an other word for found... And i'm not a hater just know how people are, they don't come in and say "i just stole the phone want to buy for 200 bucks?" That would be stupid! it's pretty clear it's stolen but i wouldn't care about it I'm Happy for the new owner and wished one day someone comes to me for a cheap good as new phone for 1/3 of the origional price (i got my hero for 150 bucks @ releaseday, found by someone i know )

I'd gladly buy your phone if it was found/stolen rather than try and track you down. (/not. it's very easy to track down the owner of a lost phone for which i have done multiple times).
Did you keep the guys contacts & messages on their or just go and delete them? so as not to spark your conscience. How about when you were deleting the owners google login details to put your own in its place? did that make you feel all light and giddy too?

You work for T-Mobile, someone brings in a T-Mobile version of the N1 and you buy it rather than trying to find the owner on your internal system?

If I worked in your store and someone brought in a "found" phone, then (a) it wouldn't have left the store again, and (b) I would NEVER, EVER, have offered to buy it. Totally reprehensible.
If you find something it doesn't automatically become yours. You're no better than a common thief. In fact, you're worse, because you knowingly paid money for it.
I'd expect the manager to back me up on (a) and help track the original owner down. I can assure you that if you worked for me and I found out about this, you'd be out of the door so quick you'd wonder what happened.

There was no SIM card in the phone. No contacts. Nothing at all. To me it looked like it was wiped which I'm sure the dude didn't do cause he had no clue how to use this phone or his phone which I might add.

No way to track down people from IMEI's :-/

I'll give OP the benefit of the doubt based on his story of how the events went down.
People lose phones all the time... that's why applications like WaveSecure exist. Without having any such application on the phone, it gets to be rather difficult to find the owner - especially if all data has been wiped from the device. Without a SIM card, there's not really anything to tie the device to its previous owner.
It is kinda sketch, but I don't think the OP is in the wrong here.

Important Safety Tip For Hardware Locked Vibrants!

This might come off as me preaching here, but I hope I don't come across as high-handed...
If you have a hardware button sequence locked Vibrant you really need to think long and hard about whether or not you should be messing with custom firmwares, ESPECIALLY NOW.
The last few leaked firmwares (JI2, JI4, JI5) are ALL RUNNING A NEW KERNEL. One that is not compatible with JFD derived builds. Furthermore these great new custom kernels provided by our awesome dev's (Voodoo, JAC, Kingclick, etc...) are not compatible with these new leaked builds. So the likelihood of you ending up staring at a really scary screen on your phone is skyrocketing, unless you have reliable methods to deal with that scary screen.
I've ran across numerous posts here today, with all the fervor over the JI5 Kies leak, where people have Clockwork Recovered themselves into a nightmare because they simply didn't understand these points. Even simpler MOD's (like a few posts I found today where people were installing the JFD version of the MobileAP mod on JIx builds and screwing their phones up) can lead to grief if you don't do your homework.
If you cannot reliably get into recovery *AND* download mode, please please be sure you understand the risks your taking if you fail to be careful and read the information that is already here. Granted, I know few people can keep up with some of us and our ability to soak up info like a sponge. Still there is a process of risk assessment YOU MUST BE RESPONSIBLE FOR when you realize you are doing things that you probably shouldn't be.
This doesn't mean I won't continue trying to be helpful. I just want to make it clear to some of you that you really need to think things through more thoroughly before you let your excitement drive you into a corner.
I vote for the following statement to be made a sticky in this and the Q&A Forum...
"If you are updating firmware on a phone, and you've already hacked this and that, tweaked this and that, modified this and that...whatever the case may be you should be prepared to have to Odin your way back to stock.
If you are not prepared to Odin your way back to stock (don't know how, have a hardware button locked phone, etc...) then you should really be asking yourself whether or not you should be customizing your phone to the degree that you are.
It's just about risk assessment. Most risks are known, but some are not. Furthermore there can be bad synergies between multiple tweaks, mods, and/or hacks that no one can easily predict ahead of time. So it's not about anyone trying to be elitist. The best way to help people is to help them avoid making critical mistakes."

actually if u have a hardware locked phone, what you SHOULD do is call tmobile right now and complain that ur phone is defective and they'll send u a new one... keep doing this till u get a working phone, i did and i now have a phone that isn't HL'ed... only took one try

The hardware locked Galaxy S thing appears to be a bootloader bug affecting more than just our Vibrants (some other batches of Galaxy S phones are affected) rather than a real hardware issue, so T-Mobile should be able to get these fixed readily. Not like we should care about T-Mobile here, but what this means also is that T-Mobile shouldn't be making a huge deal about swapping these out either.
I'd encourage everyone with a button-sequence screwed Vibrant to simply go to T-Mobile and get it replaced.

Admittedly, I was one of those fools who installed the wrong MobileAp and also tried to go back to a nandroid that didn't work (different kernel - or so I have learned.) Bricked the phone. But I wasn't hardware locked so I was able to get everything back thanks to some really helpful people here on the forum.
I agree that all hardware locked phones should be returned. If mine were locked then I'd still be staring at a dead phone.
I would like to add that I am new to the android thing. But, I am not a software noob (i did software testing for a living). The thing is that I am sometimes impulsive and that leads to mistakes. Thankfully, I have a way to get out of the mistakes (ODIN and non-hardware locked phone.) I always know the risk I am taking and take full responsibility for anything I screw up.

How can I tell if I have a hardware-locked phone, without attempting to flash a ROM, I mean?

you didn't unlock the hardware. You just simply rooted your phone. Hardware lock can not be unlocked and that's what this thread is trying to address. I have tried exchanging my phone from tmo once and the exchange phone they sent me still had the same problem, so i haven't bother with it. I wonder if i can just walk into a store and do an exchange since i got my phone from tmo online. Anyways, if you have a hardware locked phone, stick with roms that will flash through clockworks. That is the safest way, but keep in mind that there is still a slight chance of failure.

Never mind; I figured it out.

Man, I'm glad I read your post on hardware-locked problems. I didn't even realise this was a problem until after I dicked around with my phone a bunch, and then ended up reflashing with odin back to stock. I could have messed up big time.
My problem is that I can't replace my phone at all. I purchased a T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant online, brand new, unopened and locked for use here in Canada on the Wind Mobile network.
After hearing about this defective hardware I called T-Mobile, they said I have no warranty with them since it wasn't a T-mobile store purchase. Alright I guess. So they give me the number to Samsung USA,USA transfers me to Canada, I get transferred back again and this is what I'm stuck with.
My new phone has NO warranty, in either country. Both refuse to honour any sort of warranty, and refer to the other for support. I didn't think I'd get this sort of run around from Samsung.
USA says that because I live in Canada, I voided the warranty.,
Canada says that because it's a USA device, and I didn't purchase an international warranty, they won't touch it.
I'll just have to be careful what I install on my phone, and avoid Samsung products in the future.

I wouldn't say your lack of warranty is any surprise. I don't know about Canada, but in the US, phone warranty is normally tied to the carrier, which means if you're not an active customer using the phone on the account that it was first activated on, you will have no warranty. Nothing special about Samsung here, all brands are the same.

Other companies will do the same thing. Warranties are country specific, no?

I don't know how it works with mobile phones, but whenever I've purchased computer parts, the country of origin has never been a problem. Maybe I've just been lucky.
Still have gripes about GPS, and lack of 2.2 though.
Don't misunderstand me though, I love this phone. Just surprised about the hardware issues.

I called Samsung today after tmobile rep gave me a number for warranty. After complaining and speaking to a supervisor, they said i could send it in and they would "fix" it. This is what they sent in the email.
Product Symptoms : Technical Inquiry/Internal Menu/Software Reflash - FOC/No fee. The Samsung Rep said a technician would look at it.
I got a shipping label and everything.
I have one question. How should i go about reflashing to stock? can i just factory reset + remove superusers. please help.

PC parts aren't as tightly controlled as mobile phones. That's the difference.
GPS and Froyo should be coming soon. I doubt if Samsung would let their best mobile phones fall behind by much. From the leaked firmwares popping up, it shows they're working on it.

If you hand it into the police (At least in the UK) after a period of time, 4 weeks or something, it legally becomes yours if no-one claims it and you can go and collect it

Not only that, but a local mobile network operator have no right to say you can keep a phone that does not belong to you, just because it was lost
Only the police can do that, and only after they try to find the rightful owner / give them a chance to report it lost and have it returned

yes. honesty is honesty but that doesnt mean the device is definately being tracked, that could make the poor guy have a panic attack

Wipe data & system and install a new rom via Odin and you're done.
Wipe data removes 99% of tracking apps, wiping system removes the rest.

Use a custom recovery and delete everything than use a custom rom/kernel and flash modem/bootloader files too via odin

It is traceable via IMEI.
But someone who lost this phone (apparently it looks like this) and phone was bought on contract, there is huge possibility that someone will block IMEI on network provider. After that 2 ways left. Sell it to foreign country or use it w/o mobile network.

oh, yes you guys are right. forgot the old ways now that everything is smart. On "dumb" phoness you were able to change the imei with the right tools, never tried it on smarthphones. Anyway the chances that someone who throwed away a smashed phone without battery to be looking for it are slim, i would use it

And that has something to do with him because ... ? phones don't comit crimes, people do. Let's say police was tracking a phone for some reason, once the criminal sells the phone it will be tracked for an X amount of time until police knows for certain the buyer doesn't have anything to do with the seller. Anyway more than 50% of phones out there have been used in... unapropiate way from prank calling to showing the latest vid of a gf to your friends (and you know what I mean by prank and vid).
Let us not make any more of what it is: a found phone, repaired, end of story. Nobody will come after it and if it does you can show the owner the receipt for spare parts. If he is as honest as wanting his/her phone back at least they can pay for repairs.

Just use it if you really wanted to... The authorities aren't gonna bother raiding your home and arresting you and stuff just for the sake of a lost phone. So just use it normally. If they blocked it then fine just use it as a gaming device or multimedia device. If someone tracked it then give it back to them and charge them the cost for fixing it. If it really came into accusing you of stealing(which has 0.1% chance of happening) then dare them a lie detector test.

true but you also said wiping /system and /data would remove ALL tracing software. so youde be caught fast

Is there truly a way to get past the FRP security?

For starters, I've got the Tmobile version (not sure if that makes a difference, but I figured I should say it)...
I'm sure I tried everything I could except the method that involves the OTG cable. Trying to root it or apply twrp recovery only fails each and every time through odin.
I tried Smartswitch. I tried Kies... Kies actually took a really long time and I thought it was going to work, but it didn't.
I even tried to do some wifi/server things with another phone by using thethering (is what I believe it was)...still no luck.
The phone belonged to a sister of mine, but she couldn't remember the password she used to log in. She passed the phone on to my dad. He was never able to get in and now I've got it.
I thought rooting it would fix the problem, but that's because I knew about the chokehold security on it... the FRP business.
Can someone please help me? My sister says she's working on it (which probably means she isn't or it's on the back burner). I would really like to use the camera on the S5.
Is there another direction I can go in to get into this phone? It's driving me a little nuts at this point.

I say ?? after the $ because of the variability of the price from site to site. I know that idoneapps.com does it for $35, and i trust their work completely, but ive also seen people talking about other sites advertising that theyll do it for less from companies out of zimbabwe. take the location of the company for what its worth. Anyways, poke the bear aka, your sister (no insult intended, just a euphemism)

Come to find out that my sister had dropped the phone and couldn't turn it back on. She sent it to our dad... and he wiped the phone without thinking to turn off the security. He didn't know though... he came from an S4 and I don't think they had it on there. I've got a note 3 (my first real smartphone) so I had no clue this would happen.
He keeps telling me it's google and not Samsung. Apparently a year or so ago when he asked her for the password, she said she emailed google and they were going to send her the password in two weeks... I asked why two weeks and he couldn't give me an answer.
This truly is the pits. I'm literally still waiting for a call from either of them at this point.

iphone x 256gb available - anyone have a genius idea

Hi, I'm going to get straight to the point...
Basically I found an iphone X. I've done everything you can think of to try and reunite the owner with the handset. It's been impossible. The phone I think is blacklisted and icloud locked. My last resort was to factory reset which is obviously how I found it was icloud locked. All I know is their first name, imei number, serial number and the sim phone number which is on EE network before you ask. It's less than 6 months old and I am really ticked off that I have a £ 1000 paper weight on my coffee table which is essentially useless. Good only knows why the owner hasn't used find my iphone to mark it as lost and send a message to the handset saying "hey I lost my really expensive phone, what a dumbass! But you can call me on xxxxxxxxxx or email me at xxxxxxxxxx.co.uk and might be able to find a few coins in the sofa to buy you a beer and say thanks"!
So now what?!? Sell for spare parts or to someone in another country - f**k knows! It's such a waste.
So anyone have any bright ideas,anything, I'm all ears? Failing all else, make me an offer...

Can you even legally sell it? If it is legal to buy I am interested because a downgrade in firmware unlocks the passcode option and lets me unlock the iCloud stuff.

It's probably not. I wasn't aware you could do a downgrade to take advantage of some of the bugs/exploits in earlier versions of iOS in order to get passed the pin code and icloud lock.
Be a good fellow and tell me how to go about it...

Let google be your friend for your stuff, I currently checked and it seems they are not signing any early version anymore so if it updated already you are out of luck and you should contact Apple directly and say you lost your account.

Just a quick question:
why is your repl to use goggle? In other words you're not going to help me out personally. What's with that...this site is all about helping people, giving them direction... because sharing is caring. You on the other hand have decided that because there is nothing in it for you then you can't be bothered to share your knowledge/skills/wisdom. If everyone was like that, humanity would be stuck in the dark ages!
Just a thought: you might actually find that helping another person is reward enough simply by the fact that their understanding and overcoming whatever it is, was only possible because of your help. The smile on their face, the knowledge they have gained and the satisfaction of overcoming the problem is yours to enjoy as well!
Spent another day searching/googling lost phones/property in my general location and still no luck. The owner must have given up on the idea of ever recovering the handset. I guess I'm stuck with a ridiculously expensive paper weight. Although a friend reckons there is a big market for handsets to be used for spare parts, especially Apple. It can be worth hundreds, even when saying that it is a lost phone and icloud locked.
It's such a F'ing waste. Anyway thanks for your comments.

why is your repl to use goggle? In other words you're not going to help me out personally. What's with that...this site is all about helping people, giving them direction... because sharing is caring. You on the other hand have decided that because there is nothing in it for you then you can't be bothered to share your knowledge/skills/wisdom. If everyone was like that, humanity would be stuck in the dark ages!
Just a thought: you might actually find that helping another person is reward enough simply by the fact that their understanding and overcoming whatever it is, was only possible because of your help. The smile on their face, the knowledge they have gained and the satisfaction of overcoming the problem is yours to enjoy as well!

I consider it a stolen phone as it is not yours so I would inform both apple and the police with the imei and hand it back to its owner.

Police weren't interested. They said the have hundreds of phones collecting dust and going nowhere!.They suggested I try to obtain the owners details from the handset and use my initiative to reunite man and machine....
