Converting 3gp video files - G2 and Desire Z General

How do I go about in converting the 3gp files while keeping the same HD quality?
Is it even possible?
I use the Youtube HD option. Im not sure if that makes any difference.
What program is everyone using?
I want to convert the video files into something that I can burn onto a DVD, while keeping that high quality.

You could probably just use windows movie maker.

Convert the HD video to mkv

How to convert the highest resolution to a mkv-file and keep the quality without any compression?
From what source?
Unless you're downloading 40GB BD-RIPS there's no need to convert anything.
Sorry, badly formulated questiuon. I m eant the internal cluips rfecorded with the phone in 3gp format or whatever...
Why convert?
Every device on this planet reads 3gp.
Not my WDTV...
Try HandBrake, worked flawless for me and runs on Windows, OSX and Linux.
Could you post you settings please? (For uncompressed conversion)

so then can I take it as no coding necessary to change the frames to match the 800x480 (SGS screen res) in order to play a 720p file I already have. I actually tried to convert a 2.6 GB mp4 file using handbrake following a guide by someone in the forum to convert videos to play in the SGS. It produced a 2.1 GB mp4 but SGS will not play it just skips over to the next video file.
I even tried to convert the video using Kies but the video quality is so crap, can't believe how samsung can provide such a software where it converts all movie frames not above 300 pixels whereas SGS is having 800!!?

My WDTVLive plays them fine...
I would also like to know the best possible settings for movies to be converted with the SGS resolution, its quite moot to have a 720p movie on a device that only does 480p on its hardware display

converting movies to mytouch 4g

I'm not sure if this is posted or not but i use Xilisoft program to convert videos. What should I used to get the video full screen on my Mytouch 4g because it very tiny when i upload a video.
I have all kinds of movies on my phone that play full screen. And they are either .FLV or .AVI.
did you convert them or what? mine seem to be all tiny and not the full screen i dont know why
I just use arc media from the market to watch videos. Don't need to convert anything. It plays divx, xvid, avi, you name it. Plus it's free.

Not at all, they came that way.
No need to convert video files.
I am officaly going to say hello to all since this is my first post. I have been watching XDA for a while. I had the first G1 fully rooted with CM and enjoyed it a lot but now I just got the MTG4. I LOVE THIS THING!!! Just a small intro! (And yes I have it already rooted!)
I am also using arcMedia from the Android Market to watch movies. It works well so far. I have tried a few avi/divx files and no problem.
Another program from the Android Market is I have also tried that works is RockPlayer. Not sure which one I like best but I have both for a while and will be switching back and forth.
So you guys just transfer the movie you don't convert? If not doesn't that make the movie file bigger? But I tried just transferring the movie and using those videos players you said to dl but yet it still not full screen dont know what im doing wrong. Sorry if i keep bugging everyone with this.

The media players listed will play your files without you converting them. Your conversion has made them tiny. Just copy em to your phone as is.
There's built in support for xvid/divx if people hadn't noticed yet. Hardware decoding in the latest generation of snapdragon, yay! I just tried xvid and it played with the default media room no problem

I tried using the default media room on a movie downloaded from the internet and it wouldn't play it - ArcMedia played it just fine.
Is there a max resolution that the video needs to be in?

I did a test and moved three movies to my phone. I tested them all in the media room and only one worked. That is why I use a video player.
In each of the players I mentioned before you can change the size of the video to your screen.

Movie conversion
Hey guys I am having trouble with any player playing my converted movies. I am using the Divx Plus converter. I wonder if there are any other ones you could recommend.
dont convert the video. try using it in the orinigal format, see what happens
This phone doesn't really play very many movie files, sadly. Coming from the Vibrant, this is upsetting...
I wish something like VLC would get ported to Android.
Please post questions in Q&A section.

Video format and rooting

I was wondering this about the video files on the HD: With the stock HTC firmware, the video camera records as 3GP files, which seems to be an almost willfully obtuse choice to me. But I was wondering, is this set at a hardware level, or is the camera application just part of the stock firmware? When you replace it with another firmware, would there be a way to record into a different, better quality format, such as raw MPEG - like a digital compact might do? I know I'm not quite spot on with my technical terms but I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to ask.
the container is .3gp
the video format is x264 and audio format is AAC
x264 is the standard used for HD recording and is considered the best quality format to use for video in most areas also known as AVC1 its the same codec used for bluray discs
hence you will get zero benifit from changing recording format, container format well .mp4 or even .mkv would be nice but makes little differnce i think 3gp is just limited to 1 audo + video track with no subtitles.
Right, so the format itself isn't the problem. I thought that might be the case. I just don't see the benefit of recording HD video into 3gp. It means extra software is needed for playing back recordings on your pc.
So, is there anyway, with a custom rom, to change the audio encoding? The main criticism I've seen is that the audio is needlessly low bitrate, how locked is this?

Can't help with that question, although it could be a limitation of the aac-lc audio codec (sample rate limitation)

[Q] Convert video for Iconia

Hi guys, it's about a week that i'm tring to create a flawlessy working HD video for the Iconia, i've tried a lot of config but no one works, so i tried with Up downloaded from iTunes and it works like a charm, with a very good quality in about 4GB with the native Honeycomb player. So i take my Tron Legacy BluRay and tried to create a MP4 with HandBrake with AppleTV 2 preset but when i play it with every player i've got on my tab (native, Mobo, VPlayer, RockPlayer, Vital and Nemo) it's like fast forwarding and i cant slow it down to normal speed. With MediaInfo i compare the downloaded Up m4a and my rip of Tron, they look the same (same ref frames, same b-frame and all) but the iTunes one works, mine not. Obviously on PC everything it's ok.
So guys, what do you use to convert your videos to playback on Iconia?
I took the advice from this post and was able to get a 720p conversion using Handbrake from a 1080p mp4 rip of Shaun of the Dead, using Loose Animorphic setting and 1280 Picture width. You have to go to the Advanced tab and set Maximum B-Frames to 0 (from default 2?) and Preferences/General/Output Files, uncheck "'Use iPod /iTunes friendly (.m4v) file extension for MP4'". Also a good idea to make sure the Audio's set to no more than 160kbps, I think that's the Honeycomb maximum audio rate for video files atm.
Oh, the 720p file ended up being ~2GB, looks good but not great picture (occasional blur artifacting on hard scene transitions.)
Thanks, did you use AppleTV preset?
I'm going to try with your settings (i thought i used the same, but probably i'm wrong), tomorrow morning i'm coming back to update.
I've been using this preset: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVBpeQNWbEQ and have had no problems
That preset works perfect.. Thanks!
I use normal and no b-frames and i got a playable videos but very choppy. I'm going to try that present, thanks Bootup.
I've used HandBrakeCLI under Linux to convert HD MKVs for use on my Iconia. It definitely works ok for 720p video but not yet tried any 1080p.
I've written a couple of scripts that convert a single mkv file and also a directory full of mkv files, they can be downloaded here: http://db.tt/Fq7knIr
Usage is simply: "mkv2iconia.sh inputfile.mkv" or just "bulkmkv2iconia.sh" for a full directory. They will both produce "inputfile.mp4" that can be played via hardware accelerated system player
Requirements: a linux command line, HandBrakeCLI, and a lot of time/patience.
Hope this is useful to someone.

I'll give it a try if the preset posted before wont work for my rip of Tron Legacy.
I've been using a Windows application called DVD Catalyst 4 (tools4movies.com) to convert video. It had a lot of buzz about it on various forums, but I was skeptical. But it has a group of settings specifically for the Acer A500 (fast, HQ, 1080p) which make it easy to use and the new beta version works with DVDs or Blu-Rays (even copy protected ones if you have AnyDVD installed). I've done a few movies as tests and it seems to work very well.
And I was a user of Handbrake and RipBot264 previously.
I'm ripping a DVD now to try this process. It's getting good feedback, but I'll be able to decide for myself once I get it on tab. http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...rum/14292-ripping-videos-dvd-acer-solved.html
Update: Just transferred the movie onto my tab (Tangled @1.05 GB) and all I can say is wow!! You guys definitely must give this a try.
@DJ_Jedi
At the risk of sounding stupid, how are you using videos downloaded from iTunes on your Acer? I thought they were DRM protected.
Do all of your videos that you have encoded come out a bit choppy? Like skipping frames all the time.

I just take it, renamed to .mp4 and copy into my Movies folder, it said "Could not work, copy anyway?" i said yes and it works.
But great news guys, used the Xoom preset posted on the previous page and it works great! Picture quality it's not the best, a little bit lower than on my previous tries, but definitely good, i'm gonna try 2 ref frames and target size 4GB and not avg bitrate 3500.
i use rock player... it plays pretty much every video file
Here is a guide for ripping high quality DVD to a500. Read to the bottom, as video conversion is discussed as well.

EDIT: Woops, that was already posted above.
I have been using dvdvidesoft for our other android phones with the iPhone/I pad settimgs with no issues. I switched to it from handbrake because it was faster...,very user friendly and wasn't quite the resource hog handbrake was

Been using DVD Catalyst for a long time now. I usually rip in a Divx encoded AVI wrapper, but the Iconia Tab d/n support AVI files. So I did a couple rips using the Apple TV HQ HD settings and that is working peachy. I didn't realize it had a specific device profile for the Acer (doh!).
I like this tablet, but the poor media file format support will keep it from being my main entertainment portable go to device. That will remain my Archos 70IT (250GB) for the time being.
I think i'll stick to Handbrake + Xoom Preset downloaded from here, good quality and about 3 hours conversion with a 2.1 dual core mobile CPU, guess how much it takes with an i7, because i'm going to buy a new PC this summer and i'm waver between i7 2600 and new AMD's Bulldozer...

I just replied to your post over on xoomforums:

It does video files too.
Just try a few of your files to get your settings figured out, and after that, it is as easy as dragging your entire 3TB collection onto the program and tap Go to have dvdcat convert them all. It batches them automatically. With a collection that large, it might take a while before its done though.

I know but I will convert my video as I need them. I purchased the app and I tried to convert 5 720P videos to see how it would work. I used the option Xoom HQ2 because I am converting HD files and according to your post it is a faster option. I saved in my SD card and also in my Xoom's internal memory just to see which one would have a better performance.
What's happening is that when I tap on the video to play it looks like it will load but it never does, the video (all of them) would never load. The videos are about 2.3GB in size.
Any ideas of what I should do?

Actually HQ2 is (for 720p files) the profile that provides the best quality.
Based on your description I would suggest to switch video players. My guess is that you have a trial version of Dice Player installed that is expired.
The video files created by DVD Catalyst play great using the stock video player, and while there are quite a few market-players that have hardware support, some of their "plugins" can cause conflicts with the default video playback engine.
