I currently use Nero recode for mp4 which is very good in my opinion plus the video qualityis great, but need one that can handle HD rips, any pointers will be appreciated.
Try mediacoder its open source and its free, very powerful tool to convert videos.
Not sure if SUPER does mkv, but it's free and has loads of options.
Thanks have tried mediacoder but keep getting no output file error, ve played around some with no success...
I ll give super atry also..
I have been using MP4forHD and winmenc that i used for my HD2 and they come out excellent looking.

What am I doing wrong in Winmenc, every time I encode something using either xvid or x264...and i copy over to the desire when i explore using astro, i cant find the files...
Did you use the profile setting......
[0-HTC HD2] MP4 H264 800x480 2000kbps Sharpened, AAC 44Khz 96kbps
or
[0-HTC HD2] MP4 H264 Baseline 800x480 1800kbps Sharpened, AAC 44Khz 96kbps
I think i downloaded off one of the HD2 forums but can't find a link now.
If you want, i will upload them for you.
Note - i have noticed a slight lip sync on playback though but video is stunning.

I tried Winmenc today and it didn't fly for me either. 1st-pass runs fine but 2nd pass immediately renders a 0-bytes file. It's the same with single pass encoding. Perhaps we are missing some obligatory codecs for this program to function properly.
Mp4ForHD works fine though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478050

Thanks for this will give it a shot, but 2000kbps is a lot of bit rate and lot of memory card space, i will edit the settings and reduce the bit rate to around 750 for the video and bout 96 for audio..
I just use Handbrake.
800 x 480, 1500kbps data rate, 128 audio at 48khz
are you able to save a profile out.. haven't used HANDBAKE before so being a little lazy

Miro Video Convertor
Super simple totally worth it. Otherwise I just used handbreak which I still do for larger files which I want to tweak more. Miro Video Converter is soooo easy though and nice if you just want to drag and drop a file to get what you need.
Sadly I cant post a link yet since I'm a "new" user, though I've looked at this site for years. Wonder how long it'll take to be verified?

edit: tried it and dont like it. It gives you no control over bit rate/quality and as such transcoding a large file ends up in a file almost the same size.
The search continues....

Hi thanks for the .ini, I changed the bitrate to 1000, framerate to original and the audio bitrate to 160. looks nice. I am going to play around with the video bit rate and see how low I can take it.
What is interesting is that the Desire will play these x264 encodes but not my handbrake x264 encodes, wonder what I am doing wrong.....

if you are to encode movie for x10, I think there is no point encoding it more than the screen's res, cuz it will look the same anyway

they don't have to be high res. just decent quality so i can enjoy movies on the x10

For encoding, try Handbrake. It works really well using the iPhone preset (just make sure to adjust the video width to 854 pixels).
A Blu-ray rip of an episode of Dexter I have looks amazing.
what is handbrake?
Google it!

Anyone try and encode an HD movie on handbrake ?
I convert a 8gb 720P movie, set the bit rate at 1500...The vid took about 8 hours convert, and ended up being 3gb when done...set at 854x480...I also tried designating the output file size to 1.5gb, still took 8 hours...Been using Handbrake for a while now, quite familiar with the "advanced" settings, but taking so damn long to convert 720p movies. Love it none the less...

My conversions of BD rips of 1hr TV shows seem to take a bit over 60 minutes each. That's using the iPhone preset with an 854 width setting.

Technically, it's not playing 720p. The 720 refers to horizontal lines of resolution, not the vertical lines. 1280x720 is the resolution of 720p.
The X10 is capable of playing what YouTube and other sites call "480p", which is pretty much what DVDs are encoded at.
this is great guys. thanks alot, im going to try to download handbrake and convert my mpeg movie files
i agree, x10 can play some really HQ files though i find little use of it, a "normal" 350mb episode or 700mb movie will do fine when coverted to .mp4
it's a pitty x10 doesn't have TV-out capability...i had X2 and it worked pretty nicely
is there any way that picture from the x10 could be sent over wireless or am i just talking nonsence maybe an app that would show on your PC the screen which is on X10

This is incorrect. Yes, the X10 is capable of playing 480p, but you make it sound like it can't play anything above that resolution because the screen itself is 480p.
If you play a 720p video on the X10, it will be downscaled to 480p, but the X10 is still decoding the full 720p video which takes quite some horsepower. I used Handbrake to convert a 1080p Youtube trailer to 720p, which the X10 plays, but not without some stutter. Maybe my bitrate setting were a little high and the X10 could play it smoothly on lower encoding settings, but the fact that it plays a perfectly fine quality 720p even with some dropped frames is still pretty impressive.
And no, it's not really usefull to playback any video with a greater resolution that the X10's native screen resolution, but it's fun to play around with IMO. I do wonder if the media player has GPU acceleration. If not, that these results are all the more impressive.
like the title says.. what do you use to get the best video quality and best conversions from movies for you N1 i use videora and Android Converter and they both are.. mediocre at best
I never managed to convert a video on ubuntu to get it playing on the nexus.
Now I have this software player that can play alot though...
I used ffmpeg, now I don't convert anymore 'cause I don't watch films on my phone
By the way, the script should still work:
avc (main executable): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1512702/android/avc/avc
functions (BASH functions): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1512702/android/avc/functions
preferences.avc (preferences file): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1512702/android/avc/preferences.avc
I use Super for my conversion needs. it's free but runs on windows.
Also since I'm lazy, I use Rockplayer that does a good job at playing nearly everything
I don't do much video encoding myself, but Handbreak always comes up in discussions about encoding software. I think it has a preset iPhone encoding which should also work pretty well for Android.
rock player... no re-encoding necessary
doubleTwist.... its like iTunes for iphone but faster. Just drag video to software, it will convert and transfer to your phone at highest bitrate possible to retain best quality.

How many 12GB Blu-Ray rips would i get on my 16GB SD card without using Handbrake?
I use Any Video Converter, it's free and easy to use. I mainly watch Anime on my phone with subtitles so this works well. It can convert an .mkv into an mpeg4 and RockPlayer will still display the subtitles.
I can't seem to get Handbrake to keep the subtitles after converting .mkv's into .mp4. I've tried extracting the .srt file from the .mkv and burning them into the converted file with handbrake but it still doesn't work.
is there anyone covering video and or audio on the phone itself? would probably be hard on the battery but I can think of a couple of situations I would have needed this function.

I don't know if you know, but encoding/decoding is one of the most CPU stressing processes. For sure you may re-encode a video, but while it takes ~30 minutes to convert a film on a dual core 3 Ghz, it may take ages on our phones.

All video formats are compressed. The ones i use just happen to be compressed better. Start with a good quality source and work down. The Handbrake converted films look pretty good on an Amoled, WVGA screen at sizes as low as 700MB. At sizes of 2 Gigabyte or more they look incredible!

The issue is not codecs, it's Tegra 2 cannot handle high profile HD decoding (at least at the moment)
If you stick to Main profile and no B-frames you will likely be ok. Which also means you are likely having to re-encode your video.

qqplayer works
If you add the video with motorola media link (think that's what its called) it will convert it to play on your phone.

strange dude, my atrix plays all formats, i think that have one, that only comes audio, but this video was 1080p(HD) and i dont made even 1 update in my atrix
it's not that simple.
just because you can play one individual 720p h.264 file doesn't mean you can play them all. there are different profiles / bit rates etc.
For h.264 Tegra 2 supports main profile but not high profile. Xoom owners have done all kinds of tests on this. To date no video player has been able to overcome this.

Yeah right.. A 45 minute 720p TV show is just over 1GB, a 720p bluray movie comes out to about 2 - 4GB, 1080p is double that.
Even DVD rips of full length movies are bigger than 500mb if you want quality.
I'm not sure if this is on topics, but I download 720p anime mkv(most common format) and it's playback is very choppy on galaxy tab, and I've tried stock video player, mvideoplayer, and mobo player. I have to spent time re encode those files with handbrake or ripbot to make it plays properly. but the exact same file play fine on my galaxy s phone without any conversion.
anyone know what's the problem?and ideas how I can fix it? the goal is to just copy my downloaded anime to galaxy tab and play it smoothly, not spending extra time to re-encode it again.

yeah, I spent some time reading several topics and the consensus seems that this is Tegra 2 hardware problem? so there's no hope for new firmware update to suddenly make it playable smoothly without converting?
