You do not need tethering with any of the docks. Unless there is some sort of miscommunication our internal website states that tethering is only required to get the $100 MIR when you buy the phone/laptop dock bundle.
So yes, you can use the atrix with any of the docks without a tethering plan.

That just seems so asinine. Not required for usage, just for discounted pricing. Wtf? Talk about screwing the pooch...

wait wait wait wait....
so you're telling me that the tethering plan is required ONLY if you wanted to get the bundle with cheaper pricing? So if you bought the dock separately there wouldn't be the need for the tethering.... and I can keep my grandfather unlimited data plan??
The price sure does suck, but getting that is WAY better than effing my unlim. data plan up. Hopefully they still decrease the price of the laptop dock though... seriously.

That's contrary to what is stated in the AT&T press release:
3. Laptop Dock - Firefox browser use with AT&T Mobile Broadband requires Tethering Plan.
That says nothing about the $100 MIR. It says that if you want to use Firefox in the webtop, you need the tethering plan.
Look here's what the current state seems to be:
You can buy the device separately and dock separately. Who knows how much that will cost. A lot, since the dock alone will be $190 multimedia dock, $500 laptop dock.
You can use the Webtop environment on Wifi without having a tethering plan.
IF you want a discounted price (mail-in-rebate, sigh) on the phone+dock bundle, you MUST purchase tethering.
IF you want to use the Webtop on the AT&T mobile network, you MUST purchase tethering. Some people have said that as soon as you launch Firefox you'll automatically get put on their tethering plan, others that you'll be prompted, I think that's all speculation at this point.
So yes, you can use the device without a tethering plan, if you plan to always be using it on Wifi when docked. Personally that kinda seems to defeat the point of it.

The HD dock will always be on WiFi, unless you don't have it at home! And it's not 190$ for the dock alone, it's 190$ for the dock, the keyboard and the mouse (AND the remote, which should be sold with the dock anyway). So that makes the dock alone 180$ Just kidding, I have no idea, but I can't see the keyboard+mouse being much more than 60$.
i never believe what ATT says anymore
Unless it's programmed in the phone to check, there really isn't a way for the network to determine if the data coming through the network is going to the phone or to the web top environment.
I've had tethering on my captivate forever, and I've never had to pay for it.
It seems they have programmed it into the Webtop app to check.

Where did you read this? I haven't seen this reported anywhere.
There's nowhere to read anything authoritative yet. AT&T has repeatedly said that using Firefox in the Webtop app on the AT&T broadband network will require tethering. Until the phones come out we won't know for sure how this is implemented. Some people have reported in online forums that AT&T representatives told them opening Firefox will automatically enroll you in a DataPro plan, others have said you will be prompted.
I can't believe there are actual tethering plans out there, they're such a scam seeing that froyo has native tethering.

Repeatedly? I've seen it once from them in the press release. Perhaps that's all I've seen, though.
I'm waiting to hear back from their PR team (still) on this issue. Once I hear back, I'll post the details of how it will work.

Browser alternatives?
Since it specifically states "Firefox" use requires tethering, what if we ran a different browser? Personally, I don't care for Firefox anyway and wouldn't use it if I didn't have to.
Or is it that the Webtop environment is separate from Android itself and therefore no other Android browser will function there?
I'm confused....but not willing to spend upwards of a grand to to figure it out.

Even if the Firefox browser requires tethering, I'm sure it'll take about five minutes for xda devs to "fix" it so that it doesn't cost a dime. I've been tethering for years with no problems and no extra charges from AT&T.
Plus, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to port Chrome over, I'd rather use that anyway.
Anything from PR
SoberGuy, have you heard anything yet? I am getting pretty amped about this phone, and want to be sure that I am putting my money in the right place, and info like the info you may be able to glean seems vital.
Thanks

Everything I've read to this point has said that the webtop is a stripped down version of Debian that is so locked down that you can't install anything to it or even update to newer versions of Firefox. To update Firefox, AT&T has to push out an update. I'm assuming someone will fix this issue and we'll get a more useable version of Debian on there, but until it happens, I wouldn't expect to be able to run anything else on the webtop. Makes the laptop dock seem even more overpriced IMHO.

I was wondering what is the easiest way to tether wirelessly without paying the extra monthly fee? I see there's an app for rooted users, but it doesn't seem to work very well.
you want to get tethering without paying for it and your asking us? ....
I would like to know too. I use to be able to tether (via USB and Bluetooth) with my BB for free on TMO. I heard that TMO is now charging which sucks but I heard if your phone is rooted that you can still tether for free on Android but then I read some people with a rooted phone still got the text about the 14.99 plan.. So it's a bit confusing. So is there still a way to tether for free? I only use it while on the train to connect my netbook to just do basic stuff like surf the web(no video playback) and check mail so even a free tether via bluetooth option wouldnt be horrible to me but if I could get the wifi hot spot working for free that would be awesome.
if your just checking email and stuff why dont you just use your phone.? i mean thats whats its for. instead of trying to look for a way to cheat the system why not just use it? thats why your paying for it anyways.....
and people wonder why phone internet and the such cost an arm and a leg.

Because say if I'm on the train on my netbook or laptop doing work (non internet) and I want to check my email it's easier to just open a browser on the device I'm already using instead of pulling out my phone. And what's with the holier than thou attitude? I mean TMO use to allow it for free when other carriers didn't and people on all those other carrier's always found ways around it to get it for free.. so asking his question is a legit question since many many people have been "cheating" the system for years.. and cheating a carrier isn't really going to make me lose sleep at night.. especially because in many ways carriers have been cheating us for years..
its still not a legit question to ask. your catching yourself in a hole already. you said " tmobile USED to allow it and now they dont. end of story. and your saying that people always found a way around it. its all not legit. i dont really care if you dont care about cheating a carrier, but i doubt asking about it on here is going to be kosher. since this a forum about how to hack your phone to get more performance NOT about how to hack your phone to get stuff your NOT supposed to get for free.

Just answer his question or GTFO of here.
I believe that you can still use the wireless hotspot feature on your phone. I dont think T-mobile is charging for it yet. They will just cap your Data speeds if you use more data than they allow in a month.
I've been using the stock Wi-Fi Hotspot app since day one on my phone and have yet to receive the text, but then I never even get close to the 5GB "cap". some people have had the same "luck" as me where as others have gotten the text the very first time they use it... so I would suggest trying it out and if you don't get the text you're good to go.
if that doesn't work try Barnacle (in the Market).
besides every time I have asked a CSR about whether or not they charge to use the built-in Wi-Fi Hotspot app they tell me they don't know anything about it, even had one tell me that the phone didn't come with it and to check with the developer that uploaded it to the Market.
hmm How long have you been with Tmo? I wonder if the people who are getting the text about the 14.99 plan are new customers or if they are exsisting customers.. Maybe they are new customers so there accounts are built in with the block from the get and people who have been with tmo for a while are either 1.grandfathered and doesnt apply to them or 2. Hasn't been rolled out to all exsisting customer's yet.
The grandfathered thing I bring up because I know TMO has a great loyalty program usually whatever you got when you opened your account(features/services) you get for the same price no matter how high it goes up.. for example I use to have bb. for years I only paid 19.99 when TMO raised the price to I think 25 mine stayed at 19.00. When I just upgraded to android they gave me the unlimited plan for what I was paying for my BB unlimited plan 19.99. Another example is I got hotspot at home with my BB that allowed me to make calls over wifi without it deducting from my minutes for an extra 10 bucks a month.. after a while they stopped offering this service but I was still getting it. As long as I never removed it from my account it stayed.
So maybe it's a thing where if you signed up after that policy for wifi(or right around) you will get banged with the "you need a tethering plan" message otherwise you're good.. That's just a possible explanation based purely on a hunch..maybe.. kinda.. sorta
I've been with them since '05 on their original Family plan
I've been with them since 06.. I tethered on my BB up until 2 weeks ago when I switch to Android (I set my android up for wifi hotspot but havent used it yet because my netbook is being repaired) so it could possibly be that. I'm curious to know if the people who got this text message are new(er) customers and the ones that said they didnt get the text and have no problems tethering are older customers
double post by mistake
I tried the built in wireless tethering feature about an hour ago and I haven't received a text asking me to sign up for the monthly add on. I wasn't expecting it to work for free and I assume it won't be forever.
Has anyone who has rooted their MT4G had success using the barnacle app to wirelessly tether?

yeah it was working for me, that was why I suggested it if you're not able to use stock. I just prefer the simplicity of the stock app, that and when ever I would tether with barnacle or the google code wireless tether my calls wouldn't come through but they do with the stock app.
Running liberty v.4 gingerbread on my dx. Yesterday I went to try and use my theathering application, and it directed me to the verizon page for 3g mobil hotspot and usb thethering. Is this a problem faced by all who use gingerbread? and if so has there been a solution posted anywhere to allow me to still be able to tether on gingerbread? I never had this issue until I went to gingerbread, and will flash back to 2.2 if I need to in order to be able to tether. Any input is always apprecitaed! thanks

I'm using the market wifi tether with the tbh patcher applied. Its tricky to get started, but once I do, it stays connected.

If you are under contract with verizon (I.E. the one or two year contract offered in order to obtain a discount on your mobile device) then rooting your phone is illegal as well as teathering with out paying the service fee! If you are not under a contract then it is leagal to do as you wish to or with your own phone, including but not limited to rooting, teathering, and cloning another device owned by you (also not under contract) for your own use and purpose!!!
First off, this thread was not started to create an argument or debate on the legalities of tethering or rooting. Now that being said, how is tethering illegal? We should be able to use our "unlimited" data package however we wish. From my understanding, there is a difference between tethering and the mobile 3g hotspot which makes the way they both go about producing the wireless internet different. Again though, this is not the point, I was simply hoping someone could help me, if i wanted to be lectured on what I was doing wrong, I would have asked "hey, is this something that is wrong or not" can we please stay on topic?

Tethering and rooting is in absolutely no way illegal and does not even go against the terms of service. If you are against rooting then you truly don't belong on a DEVELOPERS forum.
Anyway, what I would recommend is trying wireless tether, if that doesn't work, you could try a wired tethering service such as PDAnet or easytether which is what I use
yikes
Tethering doesn't work in GB? F that, I'll stay on .340.

Rooting is not illegal. What penal code refers to this? It simply voids your warranty.

The fifth us circuit court has deemed there is no legal basis to prevent users from gaining higher level access to their devices. As for contract obligations, there are no stipulations against rooting, rather it voids the warranty, which is acceptable. Teathering is a bit of a gray area. There are two schools of thought. You obviously highlight one, but I believe in the other. That being that I signed up for a data plan at $29.99 a month that allows for my usage of as much data as I desire. (Unlimited, as in not restricted) As teathering is a feature of the android device I purchased, I am using my unlimited data plan in a manner I see fit. And lastly, I would love a direct quote of the verizon service agreement you draw this conclusion from.
Back onto topic, the TBH patcher works with wireless teather. The trick with the patcher is to flash it in CWM a few times, reboot, start teather, then flash it a few more times. Whatever the difference was, it works well for me.

[tip] best way to get AT&T to give up a micro sim without asking too many questions
yeah, sorry to dedicate a whole post to this, its not such an important thing that it needs a thread of its own, but i think its something pretty important, and itll fall back to the later pages if others dont find it important enough to comment on, so i guess no worries.
if youre coming from pretty much any other phone youll have a normal SIM card. but if youre getting an SGSIII youll need a Micro SIM. now the tricky part is getting AT&T to give it up, without asking too many questions, and trying to get you to change plans (cause nobody wants to give up their $10/month unlimited data for a $30 limited, right?).
heres what worked for me
well speaking from experience, i tossed a few ideas around in my head, till i came up with one i decided to use, and without a hitch, AT&T gave up the microsim for my phone on a Media Net data plan.
1 first off, go into a store in person, dont order over the phone. AT&T call centers have a lot more pull over what goes on than an in store salesman.
AT&T authorized retailers have the least pull of all, since theyre only licensed to sell phones, they dont work for AT&T directly, and are least likely to care about corporate affairs. how can you tell the difference between a corporate store, and an authorized retailer? well authorized retailers normally dont have real display phones, but rather plastic models. however calling the AT&T store and asking them if theyre a corporate store or not will be the best and easiest way to save you a drive.
2 what i did, was explain to them that i bought a sim to micro sim adapter, so that i can more easily travel abroad, and use foreign simcards, because in japan, microsims are the new standard, and that for now i want to use get a micro sim, so i can keep my adapter inside the phone. i brought in a flip phone, and they checked the IMEI number, and gave me a brand new Micro Sim!!
its important to note theyre allowed to charge $30 dollars for a sim replacement, but if youre nice and friendly, theyll usually give it up for free, at least the times ive gone in they have.

I guess I don't follow.... we're pre-ordered, we'll get a Micro SIM for the phone when it arrives, they're not going to let us walk out without one to use in the phone, right? Furthermore, I think you forgot a step 3, which is to activate it over the phone with Customer Care or in store once the SGSIII arrives
Or you could just have a sim cutter shipped to your door for 5 bucks and not have to go out of your way at all.
The OP's statements were in regards to the international version, not the variants like your preorder.

Yeah, you really don't have to jump through any hoops to get a microSIM card. Just go in and tell them you need one.
Thank you for this information. I plan to do just that to try and get a new micro sim card for my upcoming purchase of a Samsung Note 2. AT&T thinks I am using an old flip phone right now with unlimited data and I sure don't want them ot switch me over to a new plan.
Like some poeple said it may not be necessary to have a 'story' ready but thanks for providing a good one just in case.

There are a lot of people joining xda on daily basis, and there are a lot of repetitive questions being asked which fill up Development threads. Point them here. Feel free to ask or answer questions. Idea of this thread is to get users to help other users with their problems/questions. Please do not spoon feed, but rather point in the direction where that user can find an answer and educate himself
First thing first. I strongly advise you to read THIS thread before posting ANYTHING on XDA.
Then, have a quick look at the names of threads in post no2, you might find what you need right away.
For ROM issues please do mention in your post about:
ROM name
ROM version and base
kernel version and its settings
any mods applied on top of it
flashing "style" aka dirty or clean
something like this

Okay, I'll be the first noob.
1 - I'm getting this phone from the US where they use a 110 volt connection, whereas in India we use a 220 volt connection. What accessories should I get along with my phone to ensure my phone charges perfectly and does not spoil the battery?
2 - Will the charger of another phone (Samsung Galaxy 3. Not S3, just 3) work just fine with the Nexus 4? When I use a Blackberry charger on my Galaxy 3, it starts acting funny like sometimes the screen becomes unresponsive or it reboots. I'm asking because although the G3 and the Nexus 4 both use the same micro USB port, they're made by different companies.
3 - I read somewhere that this phone comes with a plastic/silicon cover or something to put so that a fall doesn't break the Gorilla glass. Is that true?
EDIT : 4 - I'm also using a portable charger (a small one). Link : http://theheatweb.com/milktube-portable-battery-charger-smartphone-led-light/. I can continue to use this, right?

1. Just use any AC charger that has USB output. If you encounter touch problems, try different charger.
2. See 1
3. Haven't seen anything like that mentioned yet.
hello, in t mobile stores sell the nexus 4 without contract? I will come to New York on vacation from Italy and I would like to take them, also, you know how much is this phone?

1) use the charger that comes with the phone and you should be fine.
3) all phone comes with plastic/tape like covering but it's just part of the normal covering/packaging. If you want you can leave it on to protect the device until you get a proper case, etc
What's the best, cheapest GSM plan? I looked at StraightTalk and saw they had some pretty unlimited plan for $45/month, but I thought I heard T-Mobile offered something better, idk though.
For those in the UK who want to know what prices they can get it for, check this thread out.
I've been approved by Snowflake. Jealous?

I think ST is probably the cheapest, but there are some drawbacks(i.e you get flagged/possibility of them canceling your service if you use too much data). The odds of this actually happening are very rare. Many users have used ST and used like 5gb monthly with nary a warning. Also if you get good tmobile coverage in your area than you may wanna consider it. The N4 is capable if using tmobiles 42mbps 4g service. So you may get faster data speeds with Tmo vs ST.

If you get good T-Mobile service where you are then get their prepaid $30 a month plan with 100 minutes, unlimited text, and 5GB of unthrottled "4G". Also, ST does have the option to run on either AT&T or T-Mobile if you need more minutes or something.

I think it is 500 dollars plus tax, which is about 10% in NYC. If you don't have a US credit card you might not be able to buy it from Play Store and ship to the hotel. You could try it with Nexus 7 now.
Ask someone to buy it for you (if you know some xda member from NY) via Play Store and you pick it up when you arrive

Have a couple questions about sim card compatibility. I have a galaxy vibrant on bell in Canada, I have already been scouring this site and others, and have just purchased a sim card cutter on amazon. But I do have a couple of other questions, will I get 4g HSPA+ speeds with my currant contract (galaxy vibrant is 3g)? And will I have to make any changes with bell or on the new phone itself? Thanks in advance.

If phone bands are compatible with your network (which they should be) and your network offers hspa+ you shouldn't have a problem. Easily searchable. BTW, hspa+ is NOT 4G, you guys in North America have been victims of marketing.

have pre-ordered a 16gb one on ebay.in @27k INR and waiting for it
I would preorder my phone, but I am afraid of the border customs (cause I need to pay tax).
I was thinking of buying via a fellow RC from US. He orders it from Play Store and sends it to me.
But if the police finds out, my phone could end as public property
If I want to do legal way and pay the 400% tax then the phone will be mine, but expensive)
Also it would be too expensive if I want to buy it via my carrier

The last 4 numbers on the card within the app have to be the actual numbers of your card, because if you have multiple cards from the same bank, you would never be able to know which is which.

That's what I thought about as well at first. At Least with bank of america and citi cards are all different colors. I don't have two blue, red or black. I did an informal survey of friends and they pulled their cards out and didnt seem to have two visa, mastercard or amex. Just one of each. hmmm

Exactly... With one of my banks I have 3 Visas (2 are debit cards) and they all look identical other than the numbers.

It's kind of a no brainer for those with the choice...
Wallet's a clunky mess. If I use it at Walgreen's I have to: enter or bypass my loyalty number, choose credit or debit, and confirm the amount. Softcard, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay all are/were "tap and go." Maybe Android Pay's improved but I'm not married to Google and I trust Samsung more then them not to monotize me.
Android Pay requires you to use a lockscreen PIN so no fingerprints. Fail.
My US Bank cards arrive next week so I can start using it personally. But from comments and videos Samsung Pay sure looks quick and easy to use.
What difference does which you choose make? They all do the same thing and Samsung's lock on using legacy magnetic stripe machines is kind of a big differentiator.
Am I missing something? Does anyone here have positives for using Android Pay?
So I went to Staples today and noticed they had the new card readers that say Android Pay and Apple Pay on them so I was like cool I'll try android pay for the first time...and it failed with a error so I quickly switched over to Samsung Pay and it worked without a hitch so needless to say that Samsung Pay is the clear winner. Even if Android Pay did work Samsung Pay is still the king!

Android Pay requires a lockscreen period. It doesn't care if it's a pin or fingerprints. I am using Android Pay on my Note 5 and have my lockscreen set to the fingerprint reader.
I would never use a phone with no lock screen, so that requirement doesn't impact me.

That one's kind of a given.
Anyway, Wallet updated itself to Android Pay a couple of days ago so I got to play with it. Did anyone here use ISIS/Softcard? Compared to the old Wallet it worked great and was literally "tap and go" so you didn't have to deal with picking debit or credit and answering "enter rewards number?' and "is amount OK?" That's the way Apple Pay works. I was hoping with the Softcard purchase things would have improved but they haven't. The only improvement in A-Pay I noticed is not having to launch the app to use it. If the device is alive and unlocked it'll work. Any other big enhancements I missed?
I've been in the S-Pay beta since it launched but I haven't been able to use it because none of my cards were eligible. I hated my bank so moved everything over to US Bank and all my "stuff" came in Thrusday including a Visa check card and credit card. Some S-Pay observations...
Not related to S-Pay, but US Bank really wants to make sure it's you using your "stuff." My check card came Thursday but you can't activate it without signing up for online banking. Fine, but you need your bank assigned PIN to do that. It ships separately so I had to wait until Friday when it arrived to access anything or put my card(s) in S-Pay. US Bank has a three step verification process: user designated User ID, followed by a user selected picture with audio (the dog picture barks) with a user assigned field naming the picture which has to be entered at each verification, and then a password. If someone hacks my account and can get past all that they deserve what's in it.
Adding the cards wasn't smooth sailing either. The credit card went in fine but at the end it listed options to validate the card for use with S-Pay. The only option was to call US Bank. I thought with a techish product like mobile payment being required to pick-up the phone was a bit old school. It may be a US Bank vs. an S-Pay thing. The debit card kept failing when I tried to put it in because with all the ID's I had to create I forgot to sign in to mobile banking and answer a half dozen questions to officially activate the card. It was fine after that and I got a different US Bank number to call to get permission to add the card.
App-wise S-Pay feels so much more logical and complete than A-Pay. In the example above where I had to call the bank their was a dialer icon to make the call from within the verification page I was on. The cards you enter are all swipeable and the last card used becomes the default until you use a different card. If you tap the card all your activity is shown and at the bottom there's a "customer service" expandable field with actionable links to the banks website and phone number. There's also a button that allows you to directly open your bank's app, use it, and when done you're returned to where you were in S-Pay. Once you enter your fingerprint at the sales terminal to make a payment there's a count down bar that shows S-Pay's reading so you know when it's ready and active. Little stuff but it makes S-Pay feel complete.
You can set how you want to access S-Pay for making payments in any combination - directly from the lock screen, directly from any home screen, or even when the screen's off. The last one's cool and works like taking a note on the display with S Pen when the phone's off. All are invoked by swiping from the bottom of the display. Leaving the above "off" requires you to launch the app yourself to make a payment. Pretty cool stuff.
So I had fun using it today for errands. I hit three magnetic terminals at Home Depot, Walmart, and Circle K. All three worked well and in one shot. The Walmart terminal was ancient and was literally held to its dock with duct tape. I was counseled by Walmart and Circle K staff that I can't use my phone to pay just as the register completed the sale. Priceless. I used it via NFC at Walgreens and it worked like Apple Pay and Softcard with no post recognition interrogation - just tap, pay, and done. Happy.
Needless to say because I have a choice I disabled Wallet/A-Pay. On AT&T you can't delete it because it's a pre-installed app. I'm not sorry to see it go and going back to it from Softcard was painful. Samsung's set a pretty high ease-of-use bar for Google to match. When I was setting up S-Pay a system pop-up asked if I wanted to replace A-Pay as my mobile payment choice. So people that want to use both will have to go in to settings to toggle between them.
Sorry for the long post. Mobile payments are going to be huge and I find this stuff interesting. Hope some others do to.
You don't have to toggle anything to go between apps. You set android pay as the default, and choose prioritize forward application. That way, when spay is open, it is used to pay. If it's closed, android pay is used. As of now, android pay supports Amex and s-pay doesn't. It also stores loyalty cards and brings them up automatically when near a store.

You actually don't even have to open the app. You just tap the terminal and because you set your default Tap-to-Pay method in the settings it knows what app to use and because Android Pay allows you to set a default card it knows which card to use. I just tap, scan fingerprint and it payment goes through.

Yeah, I know that is how it works now with Android pay. But with wallet you needed to enter your pin to make a purchase.
I haven't used any of these yet or even read up on it. last night was the first time i've seen any of this in action when my brother used Android Pay to make a payment. but, is internet access required? or does it work like how you could just tap your card on certain terminals (like what I used to do with my bank card)?

I don't think it needs Internet. Google wallet payments did, but I don't think android pay or Samsung Pay does. Not 100% on that though.

Apparently you can do a few transactions without a data connection on Android pay.
