There are a lot of people joining xda on daily basis, and there are a lot of repetitive questions being asked which fill up Development threads. Point them here. Feel free to ask or answer questions. Idea of this thread is to get users to help other users with their problems/questions. Please do not spoon feed, but rather point in the direction where that user can find an answer and educate himself
First thing first. I strongly advise you to read THIS thread before posting ANYTHING on XDA.
Then, have a quick look at the names of threads in post no2, you might find what you need right away.
For ROM issues please do mention in your post about:
ROM name
ROM version and base
kernel version and its settings
any mods applied on top of it
flashing "style" aka dirty or clean
something like this
...and be sure you have asked before on the ROM thread unless you have less than 10 posts on XDA
Third. Even if you do get your question answered, please, do come back and read threads in post no2 (coming later as soon as we start getting the guides) to educate yourself. You'll be surprised how much time and frustration it will save you in the future.
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE,adb, drivers, superCID etc...... You will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.
No abuse towards noobs tolerated here! No question is stupid in this thread.
***I feel that a little OT is healthy to the success of this type of thread. The people here who help the most will develop a comradery therefore OT is allowed within reason. Common sense will be applied ***

Okay, I'll be the first noob.
1 - I'm getting this phone from the US where they use a 110 volt connection, whereas in India we use a 220 volt connection. What accessories should I get along with my phone to ensure my phone charges perfectly and does not spoil the battery?
2 - Will the charger of another phone (Samsung Galaxy 3. Not S3, just 3) work just fine with the Nexus 4? When I use a Blackberry charger on my Galaxy 3, it starts acting funny like sometimes the screen becomes unresponsive or it reboots. I'm asking because although the G3 and the Nexus 4 both use the same micro USB port, they're made by different companies.
3 - I read somewhere that this phone comes with a plastic/silicon cover or something to put so that a fall doesn't break the Gorilla glass. Is that true?
EDIT : 4 - I'm also using a portable charger (a small one). Link : http://theheatweb.com/milktube-portable-battery-charger-smartphone-led-light/. I can continue to use this, right?

1. Just use any AC charger that has USB output. If you encounter touch problems, try different charger.
2. See 1
3. Haven't seen anything like that mentioned yet.
hello, in t mobile stores sell the nexus 4 without contract? I will come to New York on vacation from Italy and I would like to take them, also, you know how much is this phone?

1) use the charger that comes with the phone and you should be fine.
3) all phone comes with plastic/tape like covering but it's just part of the normal covering/packaging. If you want you can leave it on to protect the device until you get a proper case, etc
What's the best, cheapest GSM plan? I looked at StraightTalk and saw they had some pretty unlimited plan for $45/month, but I thought I heard T-Mobile offered something better, idk though.
For those in the UK who want to know what prices they can get it for, check this thread out.
I've been approved by Snowflake. Jealous?

I think ST is probably the cheapest, but there are some drawbacks(i.e you get flagged/possibility of them canceling your service if you use too much data). The odds of this actually happening are very rare. Many users have used ST and used like 5gb monthly with nary a warning. Also if you get good tmobile coverage in your area than you may wanna consider it. The N4 is capable if using tmobiles 42mbps 4g service. So you may get faster data speeds with Tmo vs ST.

If you get good T-Mobile service where you are then get their prepaid $30 a month plan with 100 minutes, unlimited text, and 5GB of unthrottled "4G". Also, ST does have the option to run on either AT&T or T-Mobile if you need more minutes or something.

I think it is 500 dollars plus tax, which is about 10% in NYC. If you don't have a US credit card you might not be able to buy it from Play Store and ship to the hotel. You could try it with Nexus 7 now.
Ask someone to buy it for you (if you know some xda member from NY) via Play Store and you pick it up when you arrive

Have a couple questions about sim card compatibility. I have a galaxy vibrant on bell in Canada, I have already been scouring this site and others, and have just purchased a sim card cutter on amazon. But I do have a couple of other questions, will I get 4g HSPA+ speeds with my currant contract (galaxy vibrant is 3g)? And will I have to make any changes with bell or on the new phone itself? Thanks in advance.

If you buy it from play store it will be GSM and unlocked.
Nexus 4 supports HSPA+ but not LTE, so it will work

If phone bands are compatible with your network (which they should be) and your network offers hspa+ you shouldn't have a problem. Easily searchable. BTW, hspa+ is NOT 4G, you guys in North America have been victims of marketing.

have pre-ordered a 16gb one on ebay.in @27k INR and waiting for it
I would preorder my phone, but I am afraid of the border customs (cause I need to pay tax).
I was thinking of buying via a fellow RC from US. He orders it from Play Store and sends it to me.
But if the police finds out, my phone could end as public property
If I want to do legal way and pay the 400% tax then the phone will be mine, but expensive)
Also it would be too expensive if I want to buy it via my carrier

So I bit the bullet and leaped onboard after it seems the AT&T Threat Data letters have ceased. I am going from my iphone 4 to the Note (Cant wait!). It will be here tomorrow.
Should I look for anything except my microsim to sim adaptor plug and play?
Has the imei problem been rearing its head or should I go without a hitch?
Have read here that you no longer need to do anything with APN's. True?
Just want to be prepared for everything that could happen tomorrow, to make it a seemless transition to this beauty.
Thanks in Advance and Happy Holidays to Everyone!
Put your SIM in, enter APN settings (google AT&T APN settings) and go from there.
If you get a text, email AT&T by googling the executive office's email. Professionally state your case that your Note is a smartphone and not a tablet and they should fix you up.
If I were you, I would go to my local AT&T store and have them issue you a standard
sims card (no charge for this, although your IPhone will not be active). Their have been reports of these adaptors getting stuck in the Note's sim slot and damaging the
Phone. I didn't want to take the chance.

I would agree a new sim would prbably be safeer, however I would hate to get caught up in a snafu of a blockage problem having to deal with someone else who may not be informed that it is a phone, hence causing a bigger headache.
Has anyone had problems with the microsim to sim adaptor? I could not find any issues.

Congratulation on your new Note! Welcome to the family!
As for the IMEI issue, I would just lift the IMEI (enter *#06# in dialer) from another Samsung display device at the AT&T store (like an SGS2 or Infuse 4G, something that ISN'T LTE!) and call in to customer care stating that you are upgrading your device to -insert type of device you got IMEI from store- and give them that IMEI. Switch your iPhone unlimited plan to "Smartphone Unlimited" plan (they cost the same). At this point you should be able to put your new SIM card into your Note and off you go! Not only will this prevent you from running into any IMEI related issues, but your data speeds should noticeably increase on HSPA+
You still need to add APN to your device for its data to work though. Like Eric said earlier, it's very easy just to Google those. There are basically two APN's that will work:
"Phone" and "wap.cingular"
The Phone APN is the newer one and may run faster than wap.cingular, but I'm pretty sure AT&T has started throttling that once you reach a certain data threshold, so honestly it's just better to stick with wap.cingular
Also, you might want to disable Fast Dormancy for the best network results. This is a feature enabled by default on the Note which AT&T does not support, and it only serves to drain your battery and make your data connection erratic. You can disable it by going to *#*#9900#*#* from your dialer.
Let's see, what other quick tips can I think of to make the experience that much better... Oh, yes! Replace your homescreen launcher with something other than TouchWiz (because it sucks). I recommend ADW ex (because it is highly customizable and lightweight), or if you really want to be fancy, and are willing to dish out a couple bucks, use SPB Shell 3D. I like this one personally. Even though it isn't as customizable as other launchers, it uses native 3D acceleration to make the whole experience buttery smooth.
Also, get Google music, and on your PC, point the downloader to your iTunes directory. Let it do its thing, and low and behold, you have all your iTunes on your Note (and in the cloud!) just like that! Easy peasy!
Finally, don't be shy! Ask us questions! Community support and development is Android's greatest asset!
Jade, thanks for all that info!! The IMEI is device specific though, if going into a store and "lifting" would'nt it already be in their system as their demo? Also the switch from iphone dataplan to Smartphone data plan, will that increase the data by that much? Never heard of the "fast dormancy issue" but will definitely look into that.

I believe some IMEI's were transposed (accidentally) as tablets.
So, if you get a text about using a tablet, contact AT&T and explain its a smartphone.
Okay guys,,,,,
Here's the deal I purchased this version of the 7.7
https://www.atgsm.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=Phone-SamsungP6800Silver
I only paid $545 for it on ebay. Will tmoible's 3G work on this thing. I know that AT&T 3G works. Funny thing is I put my SIM Card into it and it worked great. Even made calls that were clear to hear via my bluetooth headset. I logged onto AT&T with my home computer and it showed as an unsuportted device so I chose the $15 non-smartphone unlimtted data feature and it worked for a day or 2. Now this morning I got a message .... a text message and an email stating I need to purchase a data plan for tablet or broadband device. I quickly put the sim card back into my old LG C550 flip phone which has media net and sports etc.. a non smart phone.
Question: Can they do this?
Question: How do they know its a tablet if these are internatinal versions.
Question: How can they opt to change your data feature
Question: Why do I need to purchase a data plan even when I didn't get a subsidized device. If I'd known that before I would just opt for an AT&T device.
hmmmmm.. .Makes me think about cancelling my service with AT&T when my contract ends in a few months....
Please help me out here.
1) Of course they can do this. It is their network - they make the rules.
2) Domestic or international - all devices identify themselves the same way. They know it is a P6800. They have obviously updated their tables of what is a tablet...
3) See 1)
4) See 1)
I recommend get a provider that serves your area, but has less rules. T-mobile is great, but pretty poor coverage. At least they let you use any compatible device and don't force you to buy a data plan with prepaid service. ATT and Verizon are similar to each other, but at least ATT does not cripple features.
Just seems odd.....
It seems odd.... My daughter has been using the Tmobile Samsung Vibrant (It has AT&T 3G bands in my area) for 2 years on AT&T with the unlimitted non smartphone rate of $15 per month and has never received any message about getting a data plan for smartphones. That is why I asked the question. Isn't the vibrant the same as the captivate with the differecne in the bands that work...... This just seems a bit strange.......... ARGGGG... Maybe I should have just looked for the wi-fi only model. .. too late for me becuase the seller charges a 15% restocking fee... besides I did get a good deal on it.
You point out one of the advantages in GSM phones. There are a variety of carriers that support GSM, and allow devices not their own on their network. AT&T is good about that. It gives you some choice. As far as I know, Verizon only accepts devices sold by them.
Just wondering
I was just wondering. It still seems odd. Think i will just cancel the service when the term expires in a few months. The first snafu was when they merged my accounts .. the rep told me we woudld keep the $30 unlimitted plan on my wife's iphone but when i merged the accounts the option was gone and they refused to get it back..... anyway..i am just venting... That is the power of the consumer.. if you dont' like it take my money somewhere else. only pitfall is in my area AT&T has good serivce.
Yes..you did get a super good deal..

The 7.0 Plus $Ebay

You list one from Australia and one from the UK. Did either you or your friend get hit with Customs charges? That can make a real difference in price.
The Hong Kong merchants seem to be very creative at avoiding Customs charges (they lie).
No customs
I got mine for Austriala.. .didn't have any customs fees. The one from hong kong had no customs fees. it was listed as a photo frame on the form. so there was no custom import fee..

1st of all your title said that you had the 3g/wifi version, and you gave the link for it, meanwhile, you get it a lot cheaper on ebay, which kinda tempting me to get one

are you under prescription or something?
and there's the 3rd link about 7.0 plus aka P6200 which confused me even more, about what's the point of that link you gave? duh

I assure you I have the 3G international version. I will post a copy of my receipt. My apologies for the incorrect link. I will get it and post it shortly. I can't find the link however as one of the posters replied negri has it on sale. Maybe I just got lucky I don't know but it works and I stand by my posts. Do you need me to post videos or photos of me inserting the SIM card and getting the AT&T 3G and of me making a phone call. I can do that. The intention of my initial post was not to post a deal....it was simply a few questions I had about the device and AT&T practices. There are many other sources where you can obtain price cuts and deals just search with GOOGLE. On anohter note.....AMAZON has a few sellers who sell the item. There are 4 or 5 online and or local stores located in New York City also. I hope this helps. If I come across a good deal froma reputatble seller I will post it.
nah, no need. since you already admit that it was wrong link you posted
I just had a glimpse of hope of getting tab 7.7 for quite cheap like you did, but I did need 3g, not wifi only ^^
I dont live in NYC so local store is out of question for me
They did release it in my country but its the 32gb version and pretty expensive I'd say (around $820)
Whilst i already have 32gb micro sd so I think 16gb version is enough

I posted the link however as stated it was an incorrect link. I think I may have just got lucky and the seller sent me a 3G version or maybe the seller had the wrong decription either way... I am glad I got a deal. I don't know what else to tell you. You could possilby wait a few months and anticipate the price dropping due to all the new devices slated to hit the scene. As many of us know playing the waiting game for prices or next generation hardware is futile. I'd say..... buy the best you can get for the price you can pay and use the device the way you want. I find it is often pointless to wish for the stars knowing you don't want to part with your hard earned cash. So its either pay up or just play the waiting game. I don't mean to sound sarcastic but I have been getting private messages from people blasting me about the link I posted and how I need to hurry up and post the correct link. I posted the link that I used to get the device..... "Maybe the seller botched up and sent me the wrong item""" Good for me I guess ............ In any event I'd say stick with what you can afford and if not just don't buy anything .........
You can try this one.. very good
Yes its $645 but you do get it overnight from overseas to USA>

[tip] best way to get AT&T to give up a micro sim without asking too many questions
yeah, sorry to dedicate a whole post to this, its not such an important thing that it needs a thread of its own, but i think its something pretty important, and itll fall back to the later pages if others dont find it important enough to comment on, so i guess no worries.
if youre coming from pretty much any other phone youll have a normal SIM card. but if youre getting an SGSIII youll need a Micro SIM. now the tricky part is getting AT&T to give it up, without asking too many questions, and trying to get you to change plans (cause nobody wants to give up their $10/month unlimited data for a $30 limited, right?).
heres what worked for me
well speaking from experience, i tossed a few ideas around in my head, till i came up with one i decided to use, and without a hitch, AT&T gave up the microsim for my phone on a Media Net data plan.
1 first off, go into a store in person, dont order over the phone. AT&T call centers have a lot more pull over what goes on than an in store salesman.
AT&T authorized retailers have the least pull of all, since theyre only licensed to sell phones, they dont work for AT&T directly, and are least likely to care about corporate affairs. how can you tell the difference between a corporate store, and an authorized retailer? well authorized retailers normally dont have real display phones, but rather plastic models. however calling the AT&T store and asking them if theyre a corporate store or not will be the best and easiest way to save you a drive.
2 what i did, was explain to them that i bought a sim to micro sim adapter, so that i can more easily travel abroad, and use foreign simcards, because in japan, microsims are the new standard, and that for now i want to use get a micro sim, so i can keep my adapter inside the phone. i brought in a flip phone, and they checked the IMEI number, and gave me a brand new Micro Sim!!
its important to note theyre allowed to charge $30 dollars for a sim replacement, but if youre nice and friendly, theyll usually give it up for free, at least the times ive gone in they have.

I guess I don't follow.... we're pre-ordered, we'll get a Micro SIM for the phone when it arrives, they're not going to let us walk out without one to use in the phone, right? Furthermore, I think you forgot a step 3, which is to activate it over the phone with Customer Care or in store once the SGSIII arrives
Or you could just have a sim cutter shipped to your door for 5 bucks and not have to go out of your way at all.
The OP's statements were in regards to the international version, not the variants like your preorder.
Man... Sim cutters online are like 3 dollars...

I just walked in and said I want a micro sim. She asked to see my phone. She said micro sim won't work in it. I said i have this adapter. She said ok, scanned new sim, and gave it to me. I popped it in and was good to go. Ready for my S3.
Where do u live? Lol I've done this 100 times. They don't charge ****. And u don't have to say all that bs u just say I NEED A MICRO SIM CARD. Lol done. No charge. U have to go to a corporate store that's it

Yeah, you really don't have to jump through any hoops to get a microSIM card. Just go in and tell them you need one.
Thank you for this information. I plan to do just that to try and get a new micro sim card for my upcoming purchase of a Samsung Note 2. AT&T thinks I am using an old flip phone right now with unlimited data and I sure don't want them ot switch me over to a new plan.
Like some poeple said it may not be necessary to have a 'story' ready but thanks for providing a good one just in case.

Hey, wasn't sure where to post this, but anyway....
I had a ST account with 2 AT&T sims on it. Before they AT&T dropped ST I kind of saw the writing on the wall with that 2GB limit, and since I tend to go over and the other person does too I just switched to T-Mobile.
I'm wondering if I can try and profit off this a little? Could I sell someone the rights to the account/sims? or better yet is there a way to remove the sims from the account, still have them work, and sell them stand alone?
NOTE: If you have a problem with my attempt to try and profit off still having two of these, I don't care, move along, thanks.
Are they used? If so, how old are they? I think straight talk sims "expire", so to speak, after being used... I think it's between 1-3 months...
Edit: OK upon further research, service cards expire a year from date of purchase but sims do not... Again, idk if it matters whether or not they were previously activated or not...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
They are used. One was last used about 3-6 months ago. The other we just stopped using this past weekend. The numbers associated with them were ported off.
They stay in the account ready to be activated again. I think I'd have to sell the "account" with the 2 sims, change the password, and let them activate them how they want.

I would say it doesn't really fit anywhere on XDA to be honest. But, a lot of Nexus users have experience with ST. Thanks for the complaint withotut any good suggestions by the way.

One thing is for certain you can't sell the sims and activate them on another account and I think they can only be reactivated using the number associated with them when you first activated them. When I first used StraightTalk I didn't port my number over and used one they assigned to me, when I finally wanted to port my number over they said I had to use a new sim as you couldn't change the number on the existing sim card, it was permanently associated with the first number assigned to it or so it was explained to me. I think the sim can only be written to once after that its read only so any account info on it can't be changed.

You can discus phone plans here no problem, there are plenty of them already and it has everything to do with the Nexus 4 as its carrier unlocked. And since it was a question it does belong in Q&A. You could have posted it in the other StraightTalk thread in the General Section but who really cares (except it seems one person).

Thanks for the response....
I think I'ma just abandon this idea. It's too complicated lol. I was trying to see if I could keep some ST AT&T sims in circulation and make a little coin on top, but with them activated already it doesn't make sense. Plus you can still get activation kits around $50 if you really want.

Like you originally said you would have to sell the account and I don't think that is allowed in the TOS. They might let you transfer it to a family member but that would be the extent of it. IMO It would be a huge pain in the butt to try and sell it as who really wants to go through that huge a hassle to try and save a couple bucks at best. And you would also have to give any buyer the phone number associated with the sim card which is the one you ported. I've got all kinds of used sims from carriers laying around too I just put them in a box to grow dust.
Just as we suspected Verizon locked us down from unlocking it. Hopefully there will be decent support for this phone and we can get it unlocked in the future. Honestly just root would be fine for me since it's 99% AOSP as it is. Here's the screenshot of me trying to unlock it after the phone just released today at Verizon:

Bummer, I'm not sure why VZW obsesses so much over unlocked BL's but they do. Too bad, I might go back to TMo.

Because people with unlimited-no-tethering-allowed data plans unlock, then root, then suck down a bazillion bytes of tethered data.
I'm one of them, so no judgment happening here.

Question: did you buy out from Verizon? I bought mine from Moto maker just curious if that one would be unlocked. It did say unlocked phone when I purchased it. But time will tell once I get it from Moto
If I wasn't already grandfathered into unlimited data on Verizon I would probably switch to T-Mobil. Verizon is way too restrictive with everything they do.
They mean SIM unlocked, as you can use the phone on other GSM providers.

Yeah same here. I was on straight talk att for a while but my vzw line was still active and I just missed all of that data way too much and used my unlimited vzw again. I bought the moto x outright, but only because there weren't any lines that had upgrades. (We have 5 lines )

I think you loose your unlimited data if you do the upgrade anyway. Last time my family member used his upgrade to buy an M7 they put him on 2 Gig data plan because "They don't sell unlimited data anymore". Personally I've bought every phone since my first gen Droid X off of Craigslist instead of going through Verizon again cuz of their BS. I've cut my mini sim down to a micro sim, and when my Moto X comes I'm going to have to cut it down again to a nano sim. Bastards :[email protected] If that doesn't work and I have to go through Verizon again for a new sim (or for anything) I'm just going to switch to T-Mobil.

There's a thread in Q&A about root. Last post says user contacted jcase and answer is "won't work on new X, not at this time".
If anyone cared, Towelroot doesn't work either. Probably because of the write protection.

Also because it only worked on kernels with a release date of June or earlier on 4.4.2. I think June 6th to be more specific. It was patched very shortly after that.

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's temproot feature can overcome that on some other 4.4.4 builds it seems but not the latest X builds. I tried it on my og retail X when jcase and beaups updated it recently, no go of course. I think Sunshine will be our best bet. I think the challenge is what motivates those guys the most but with sunshine, they're able to get some kind of monetary compensation, even if it's not much and I'm sure goes right back into projects for users... Which I'm more than happy to pay for a service that gives complete control of my device to me. Although another dev edition would have been nice. An unlocked bootloader AND a warranty was a combination you don't see on VZW.

Yea you don't see that. Lol..I'm hoping the get it unlocked cause 25 its well worth it to me. Well worth it
If the Moto X gets Root only I am willing to switch from my HTC One M8, an unlocked bootloader would be even better though.
