any suggestions on inexpensive replacement parts?
Parts? You mean you didn't get the insurance???
insurance
how do you get the insurance?
i read the book and supposedly it doesn't cover negligence (like dropping the phone on concrete)
So far I only seen them on eBay.
seeing as how the titan's relatively new, i'd say it'd be very hard to get replacement parts. I remember when i had a tytn and i needed a replacement digitizer, it was such a hassle that it was easier for me to just buy a new phone. which is why i now have the titan. I would recommend trying to go through htc america for parts if you live in the states. unfortunately here in canada, a canadian htc repair building does not exist.
broke my mogul's screen earlier this year, brought it in to sprint on the insurance plan, and got it back for free. TEP plan for sprint shoudl be 5-6$ a month. You can get it for one, bring your phone in, then cancel it.
dunno if you have the verizon version though
My Htc Tytn or Titan or sprint mogul or 6800, hmmm I think it has enough names also had the lcd crack. I was curious if anyone knows how much sprint charges to fix a broken LCD and touchscreen? I don't want to have to send my phone away to pocketpctechs in the mail if I don't have to. I also don't have the insurance and it's too late for me to add-on now because I checked.
Also, has anyone paid pocketpctechs.com to fix theirs yet? Says it costs $169 plus you pay the shipping to them. Do they provide good service/work and do they honor their warranties? Thanks in advance if anyone has any more info.
I think I remember reading somewhere that they charge maximum of 50 dollars for a repair, but I may be off. I am pretty sure that if you bring it in for them to fix, afterwards you can tell them to add insurance to your account.
Yeah, there's a $50 deductible if you have the insurance to replace a phone, but has anyone had to bite the bullet and pay the full fix-it fees without insurance. Also I have two moguls do you know if you bring it in for them to inspect if they'll add insurance. Also, secondary when you bring a phone in for fixing do they verify ESN's and such to verify actual phone?
~$60 repaired at Sprint store
Got my Mogul's screen replaced at a local Sprint store. They charged $55 + tax for the repair. It's all done in a hour.

Now did they just replace the touchscreen or the digitizer underneath too? I was thinking it would be way more. Thanks for sharing the info though. This makes me feel much better.

Is there a cheap TV-Out cable out there?
I bought one from Expansys. It's the OEM cable for $30 US. I couldn't find a cheaper aftermarket cable, (did and ebay and web search), but maybe one will be available from an after-market manufacturer soon.
I ordered one from expansys 3 days before the fuze release. I knew they would be harder to get after the phone came out and wanted to make sure I got it when I had the phone. Their website said "11 in stock, ships within 3 days" on the tv out cable page when I submitted my order. Get an email today that its not in stock and will be shipped sometime near the end of the month now. What a bunch of BS. I hate websites that outright LIE saying its in stock just to get you to order. They (expansys) will never see another dime from me.

Most companies do this, they can get as many purchaser's monies, then put it all into a high yielding savings account. They keep telling you that they will get it, but in the mean time they get interest. Then you get tired of waiting, you cancel. They dont care, they'll give you your money back after another month. Kinda like rebates, you pay full price and after a month of interests on your full purchase, they'll send you a nice $10 back.

1. I'm not trying to bring an old thread back to life, but I feel it was necessary because I am also looking for an inexpensive cable.
2. I also wish to defend Expansys. I have made several major and minor purchases through this company. I've even driven 5 hours one-way to make a pickup at their Illinois warehouse. I have never been billed until they actually SHIP the product. And if they say usually ships in X days... that means they aren't in stock at a local warehouse. (Most likely UK). This requires overseas shipments, customs... and this can take time...
I understand your frustrations, however, I personally would rather deal with Expansys than any other on-line phone retailer.

brando is selling a cable for $16.00
but I wonder if this one will work since it's has a mini USB as well: Dealextreme
Is composite RCA the only supported Video output? No S-Video or VGA? New to these types of devices but can deffo see their use.

Is there a cheap TV-Out cable out there?
can i open the channel board easily???
The cheapest one I found is thru Ebay through this guy from Hong Kong for $4.88 US.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280416849785&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
He ships worldwide for free, but payment has to be paypal. I haven't bought it yet since I don't feel like needing it for now.
I bought my TV Out cable for RM40 in Malaysia. Converted around USD11.8 or Euro7.9
Its nice and exactly the same as the OEM AC 110 (I think this is what its called).
Unless you are in Malaysia, i Cant help you guys out. I think shipping to the US/UK would offset the cost already.
It's rooted with CM 4.2.8
Includes an 8G microSDHC class-6 card
And recently switched to using RA-dream-v1.5.2 for recovery.
No case/holster.
Does have a screen protector.
It has the tiniest 1/8 inch long hairline scratch on the screen itself. It does not distort any viewing. Otherwise, has no other scratches on it.
What do you think I can sell it for?
I'm planning on getting the Nexus One when released.
My wife doesn't want my G1 - so I may sell it. Am just curious.
they usually go for between 100 and 220(max, usually 200) but i would check craigslist and ebay if i were you...
I was hoping for $100, as it's a year old.
Im glad to hear $200 is possible.
Thanks oshizzle!
160 is cheap for a decent one. If it had a cracked screen I could see 100 being a possibility, but 150 at least if that's the only scratch.
It's insane what the freaking G1 will sell for on ebay.
If you choose to sell it do yourself a favor first, get it unlocked.
Unlocked phones seem to add $75 to the going rate.
If its clean, rooted with a current mod, and unlocked....$140-$175
I fail to understand why a phone that, I can get for $129.99 with tmobile, will sell for $129 on ebay ... broken.
I watched an auction for one that had OBVIOUSLY been run over by a car.
The guy even said, all the plastic parts are cracked or broken. The screen is broken, it does not work, the thing is falling apart. It's junk!
The freaking thing sold for $92.
Personally I think the Chinese are buying them all up and refabing them into operational units or selling them for parts. I mean I can buy every part I need to make a G1 except the mother board and the daughter board off of ebay. (and pay about $129)
Thought about going and extending my contract so I could get a new G1 and then selling my old one one ebay. I figure I'd break even at least.
wow, G1's are being sold for more money than I bought it for. When I purchased my G1 at release w/ a tmobile contract, i paid 125 dollars for my g1, i nabbed it a day early from release . but still, are you telling me that g1's are going for that much out there?

That's what I'm sayin' ... WOWZA!!!
If that's the going rate, I may just buy some functional GeeWons and root them and unlock them and flash them with the latest CM and throw on a $0.99 screen protector and get DOUBLE-DOUBLE!!!
I feel I did a terrible thing when I bought my G1 judging by this thread. I paid almost 700 CAD and ended up signing onto a 2 year contract after the fact because I needed data as well....
There should be an icon for getting pounded in the bum.
Remember everyone,
These are the "current" prices.
3 months ago G1's were going for about $50 broken, and $120 used.
After the phone first released, they were like $450 for an unlocked phone and even more if it was one of the first rooted phones.
To many people are buying the G1 because it is the new Super toy. My friend with an Iphone, another friend with a Nokia 900 and I are constantly playing the, 'Oh yeh my phone does..." game.
The more people who buy them, the more the market floods and the faster prices can drop.
A large handful of these people you have met...we often see them with posts like "HELP! I just bricked my phone!"
Prices will go down when the Nexus One gets released because it will become the new HOT item.
Then we can all buy super cheap replacement parts for our G1's that are also running the Nexus software thanks to people like Cyanogen, Dwang, and all the other great Devs who have been working on these phones.
As far as paying to much...can't help you there. Research is always your best friend.
$125 that seems good
G1's in the US in perfect condition are about $200-$250 on ebay... I got mine a couple months ago for $190, and felt lucky at that price. Perfect condition, only 2 hours of talk time, guy got the phone to test for a magazine, used it for 2 weeks, then sold it. I did plenty of research and spend a month waiting for one in the right condition at the right price to come my way.
Anyone that thinks they only paid "$125" for it are ignoring the fact that was the 2yr contract price, the actual price of the phone new is more like $400.
If all it has is that one little scratch, it will go for up to $200 if unlocked and in an auction. If you do a buy it now posting, $150-$175 will sell quickly and is more than fair.
I push them to $400 AUD ,,, if someone wants their rooted phone they can pay the price
I will buy them for $300 unlocked if I have someone wanting a phone rooted
they are $460 New
If someone Brings me their phone I will root for Free ...

Thanks for your valuable input on this.
If I should post it on ebay (most likely there than Craigslist), do you recommend I mention the technical details?
ie: it is rooted, has installed Cyanogen ROM 4.2.9.1 + RA-dream-v1.5.2 recovery
I know for sure I will definately take some high resolution pics of it to clearly show its fine condition.
Yes, realize what you pay for.
When you say that you are paying someone on ebay or craigslist the same price what you can get one from Tmob for, you are not. You pay that price at Tmob because you are signing a contract. On ebay and craigslist you are just getting the phone. That's why you get these phones for so cheap from any cell carrier. Because you are signing a contract. If you buy the phone without the contract, you will pay $300 plus for the phone.
Some people buy online for different reasons. To root the phone or use on another network.
And lately, people are not going to want to pay that much for a phone they are going to experiment on anyway. You can get a good used mytouch for about $150. When I had my G1, I bought it a year ago from someone for $175. But, if yours is in decent condition, you should still get a good price for it though.
Does anyone have any experience here?
I got talked into the Best Buy Black Tie for 9.99/mo over the 7/mo Assurion. No deductible, protection against everything except for theft and loss, no refurbs...
But I'm curious, since it IS Best Buy after all, how well this really works. I want to make up my mind whether I want Black Tie or Assurion... Anyone have any input on this?
Use state farm or any insurance company. Pay a few dollars per month with no deductible. I will never use Assurion again. Over the 2 yr contract you pay 7 bucks and $130 Deductible. Thats $300 for there service if you replace your phone during the two years.
I don't have a renter's insurance policy - my roommate does. Do they offer standalone insurance?
I've definitely had some nasty experiences with Assurion... 6 "refurb" Moguls that were all crap, refurb TP's that were crap, refurb TP2s... but I don't know anyone who has had Best Buy's warranty... and I had a really nasty experience with them over a TV a few years back...
The difference between the 2 is with best buy plan if something happens to your phone they send it off to get fix and they five toys crappy phone to use til they get yours back. It can take up to 2weeks just so you know. Sprint on the other will try to fix it or get-out a replacement phone. If its water damage or damaged beyond repair you can file a insurance claim and the insurance company will over night you a phone. Hope this helps
Wow I was misled on this one big time.
Is it too late to cancel the insurance? I'll just get TEP... I hardly ever have to pay the deductible anyway...

they do not
when i have broken my phones on numerous occasions thru bestbuy i walk in they check and give me a brand new one right away and activate it
Hmmm... Sounds like I should do some more research...
They are both telling the truth. Over the lifecycle of a phone, Bestbuy provides different levels of service. For example, in the early days of the Palm Pre, BB would replace them with in store stock. 6 months in, they began the bullsh*t policy with the mail ins.
They do this with most phones. No way to know if it will impact Evo, until it does.

Well there's your answer right there. Best Buy's plan costs more and covers less. Don't forget with TEP the only time you pay a deductible is for obvious physical damage and loss/theft.
I have mine insured through squaretrade.com. I paid $115.60 (with discount, which is easy to get) for 2 yrs of coverage for up to $599 (they have cheaper plans), full coverage including accidental handling. The ADH portion has a $50 deductible (if you drop it or immerse it in water) and if it's defective there's no deductible. I've dealt with them before and they had the funds in my Paypal account within 2 hrs of having received my broken phone. You don't get a loaner but you get full coverage (except for theft/loss) and no hassle.
Don't think for a minute that it cost a lot for a screen....There may be high sales now but soon the true cost will be no more than $80.00. Remeber true cost for many phones to OEMS like Apple is $65-100.00. What do you guys think! Here are a few links that I came up with for LCD, and digitizer replacement. Feel free to post and add more for those in need that will be organized into one thread.

Insurance is worth it imo because screen damage is only one possible problem. There is also water damage, theft or other defects that may present themselves after the manufacturer warranty expires.

Yes but carriers may soon have parts to replace screens for like free or a small fee. I paid 35.00 to replace my EVO 4g cracked screen

Last time I checked Squaretrade was a much better option, but doesn't cover theft. It's only offered for the first 30 days of ownership. Also, the deductible for both is very high.

I used to work for them. A lot of people assume that they get their phone replaced with a new one in-store, but they don't. It gets shipped out and repaired if possible. Cracked screens are almost always repaired. They try their hardest to avoid giving the customer a new phone. But if they have replace the phone, it's a refurb. If there are no replacements available, they get store credit for the amount they paid for the phone.

This information is very outdated as it has changed a bit ago. The phone gets sent out (you can get a loaner phone if available for $50. This gets refunded when the loaner is returned). Usually within 1-5 business days you get your replacement phone (same model).

Soon? Psssh yeah right, not believable for a minute when a t959 vibrant (gs1) LCD screen replacement is $89 + free shipping and a t989 gs2 is $149 + free shipping, both from amazon and is the cheapest I have found.. which is about the same pricing as LCD replacement sites from China and wholesale sites like Alibaba and Aliexpress.
True though, their wholesale price should be about 3x less than retail but I've been searching extensively for weeks and there are no wholesalers selling for anything less than what I've stated above. It will be years until we see LCD screens for the gs3 at a respectable price, like claimed in the OP. By then the value of the gs3 will become greatly depreciated from what it is today since higher end phones will be available.
P.S none of those links work
