2G/EDGE packet data connection problem solved in apps... - Galaxy 3 General

Hello.
I came from a NOKIA 5800 XPRESS MUSIC Symbian smartphone, where my packet data connection settings were ready to go by default, so I didn't have to set up manually the 2G/EDGE internet connection from my provider.
But...
After buying my SG3 five days ago, I was going to continue to use the sim card from my Nokia phone i.e. use my unlimited 2G/EDGE internet connection to use it where there's no wifi, like to browse apps, get enlightened by the xda-development, chat in gtalk and be allways synchronised.
So.
First I requested a configuration message (CM) from my operator and was all happy (after installing the CM) about the connection notification that I can use packet data, so I opened the gtalk app to share my experience with my buddies, but there was not a chance to connect via packet data.
I tried to reinstall the CM, but nothig happened, only where it was working was the browser. In my APN (access point name) settings were wap and mms profiles due to CM install, but no internet, even after installing another CM with given APN and AP usage only.
When my frustration level was high enough, I deleted all the CMs and APs. Than an idea poped in my mind, to manually create a 2G/EDGE AP, filled with the informations about the internet connection given by my provider inside Froyo's wireless settings.
Simple enough?
...well it worked!!!
From that moment i did not encounter any problems with the 2G/EDGE internet connection.
It's like being on wifi, with just the speed of 2G connection. ;-)
Le a kalappal - Thanks to...

Ps. : Very stable.
Edit: here's a very helpful post, where's the global apn settings file which I am using, since it is included in korillos 2.2 Rom.
It includes the internet ( 2G, EDGE, 3G, HDSPA, etc.) and mms settings as well.
Thanks to madhuranand007.

I joined as this is the exact same problem I am having. TMUS, have data plan.
I had a C6 Nokia, and it had quite a few categories to enter info. Like Packet Data. The Apollo doesn't.
Phone is working fine - even have Skype working.
Problem is MMS/photo compression and slideshow. I've got it halfway fixed - I can see the images, but they are smaller than I'd like. There is no darn setting for messaging in the Android. A lot say that you can't use 2G/Edge/Gprs to send mms.
The C6 did it with no problem, I've seen complaints from other phone and carrier users, so I'm suspecting it's Samsung/Android. I have a TTW plan, so the phone should be covered. I use more wifi at home than data, except for the mms. And I don't send many of those.
Thinking of rooting the phone - reading everything and proceeding cautiously.
I would like to get all problems solved before I do anything.
I have internet, but no place to enter wap. They were 2 different settings on the Nokia C6
Thanks,
Zuben

Basically the bottom line is, if you don't get your APN settings automatically find out the name of your mobile service provider and google: X apn settings android
X being your service provider

I did. Trouble is, there were 2 settings in Symbian. One for internet which was epc
and one for data, which was wap.voicestream. That came from the carrier.
I have no place in Android to enter the one for data only. It doesn't give me the choice.

Wifi Vs. Data Usage - How to Tell

I just got an HTC wizard and have one question - is there a way to tell if data you are downloading is via wifi or from the service provider? I only ask because I want to use wifi, but fear something not working as expected and later realizing all the data went down as data usage on my bill, which would be a problem at this point since I don't want to pay for a data plan.
Furthermore, with AT&T the data usage doesn't get posted to the website for a few days, and by then it's too late to realize something was going wrong and I will owe them a nice amount of money. Not a good thing.
Preferably I'd like to say 'use wifi or nothing', meaning if there is no wifi connectivity, don't download anything. I'm not sure if this is an option or not though as I haven't seen it.
Anyways, any advice on this would be great. Thanks in advance.
Just remove your GPRS account from your network settings. (called cingular.wap) Also remove any dial-up versions of it.
Then the only way the phone will know how to access intertubes is via WiFi, and Bob's your uncle.
I'm not quite sure where this is at. I have a lot of network connection options. I go to start - settings - connections tab. Here I have network wizard, connections, wifi, wireless lan, gprs setting, and a couple unrelated ones.
Under connections, there is an advanced tab. I clicked 'select networks' and then created a new one, called 'home'. I then set that for both drop boxes. I didn't enter in any dial information for it. This got internet explorer working (it used to not find the page), but mentions mediaNet and stuff. I'm not sure if that just happens by default or if that means I'm connected through AT&T.
I tried to find a way to delete GPRS from it, but I couldn't. Under select networks, I can edit 'my ISP' which has name 'My ISP GPRS'. I can click edit, but do not quite see what you have. access point name is set to isp.cingular which I can change to some other value. I can modify username and such, but that is it.
I don't know. Just trying to watch that data usage when there is wireless LAN all around me everywhere I go.

HTC Weather using Wifi ???

Hi,
I did search the whole forum for answers but in vain. Whenever I access weather tab and update the info, it updates using 3G/HSDPA.
But, what I want is to update using wifi at home. Is there an option to make it use wifi instead of 3G/HSDPA?
Pls lemme know coz it wud help me save a few penny
TIA
SK
Well I did the following.
1) As I don't want any applications (in background or by request) to update via any Phone Network I deleted the internet setting.
Now I can connect via USB or Wifi and then download, both work.
If I do it when I am not connected then I get an error message (as I have no internet connection setup).
So this works for me but also means I have to remake a internet connection if and when I want to download of phone network.
I have no flat rate data plan so its my only choice, maybe others have a better idea.
really strange, mine uses wifi and if there is no wifi, it relies on gprs.

Which is correct as far as I can see.
The issue here seems to be he does not want to download via gprs and I have yet to find an option that allows you to turn it off.
The choices are Download automatically
Download weather when roaming
What is missing is that stops you downloading via GPRS but allows you to download via WIFI and when connected.

Thanks 2 all for ur reply
Actually the problem is:
I have router at home and my touch hd connects to wifi to update mails, etc.. But when I switch to weather and update, it somehow doesnt identify the wifi connection. Instead uses 3G for updating...is it happening only in my mobile?
And I guess nodata might just work...lemme chk that out ....Thanks a ton
Mine too used to use what it wanted, hspda as first choice. So i deleted the 3g configuration. From what i have read, it is a WM problem: no way to set 3G as secondary choice

start->settings->connections->connections
here you see (don't know how exactely in english, since i have italian)
internet (???)
work
under internet, "modify"
enter there, and delete your 3G account.
Now back in connections, go advanced->select (net???) [the first button over composition rules]
Here select "work" for everything.
Now, without 3G, the phone connects to internet only if you have an active wifi, otherways doesn't connect.
Wouldnt it just be easier to use the HD tweak utility to disable internet access via 3G/GPRS/HSDPA? - just a thought guys, instead of deleting settings which may be required at a later time (i.e. when no WIFI is available)
My weather updates fine via WIFI,
My emails (using a hotmail account) keep trying to update via 3G though - I can't get it to do it via WIFI unless I use Windows Live to login then update emails
Would, but as you see there are problems (and i suspect hd tweak kills also mms's, since excludes all data connections). Instead, deleting the account, is easier. I can always reinstall it with the connection wizard.
try this: disable or delete your gprs connection, enable wifi and try to download weather data. if successful, then re-enable your gprs connection and see if it still prefers to use gprs or wifi at first place.
Use modaco NoData to make sure the 3g connection is never used.
Done
Thanx a ton for ur help...I used Nodata and my work was done...sweet and simple...
Thanx
I have a similar problem, just wanted to open a topic about it
Unfortunate, weather is not updating any more, no Wifi, no 3G.
I do not mind it using 3G, but it's not updatingf, nothing works.
I am not even sure how to delete the default 3g connections.
i will try .. i hope i will not have to hard reset the phone again
Ummm... u bought £500 phone and yet can't afford a 50kb 3G/GPRS bandwidth per month?!
Quite intriguing
@zoomee
To make email use WIFI and 3G as a fallback, in email account settings change connection to "The Internet" (it's probably set to your 3G Access point e.g. "T-mobile internet")
Maybe your settings are wrong. Does QuickGPS work? If it doesn't, then check your settings. With some access points of some operators, you can only browse internet pages but not use other apps requiring internet access.
@sriramkrishnan06: no problem
I am affording a 3g Connection and Bandwidth (if that was pointed at me).
I can not get any more weather data (
I deleted as explained here some of the previous set connections to my 3g provider and also rebuild one, and still nothind
throguth Wifi it seems not to work, but through 3g, not any more
it was working before, i had to hard reset it and now it does not work any more
I think it was pointed to sriramkrishnan06.
Anyway, have you checked whether QuickGPS works or not?
The Quick GPRS works form me, Weather still does not work
I am little upset since i know i am missing something small. I am not THE thech savvy guy, but i know my whay arroud computers, (i am a web developer) still, somehow i am not able to make the damn weather work, even tried one of the "hacks" witht e weather database editoer, to load the default server, it is still not working for me.
If anyone has an idea .. please ..
If Quick GPS works then I have no idea. Are you sure you didn't mess up anything using that tool?
In any case, hard resets almost always work. If you don't want to, you could do a full backup with Resco Backup or similar, hard reset, test the weather, then restore the backup.

Force E-mail to use WiFi

I gave my wife my old 8125 to use when her phone went out, now she's hooked on it & wants to be able to check e-mail. she dosen't have or want a data plan on it, and is home most of the time, but can't get to the computer b/c of other responsibilities.
I have set it up to access wifi, and it will use it for PIE, But when I set up the e-mail account it wants to dial out to check. I have tried setting the account to work, and internet but it just won't work, If I let it use medianet it's fine.
Any ideas?
I have not found a way to keep WIFI active at all times and doing so would kill the battery in just a few hours anyway. (seems to be more problematic on secure wifi networks)
This is the solution I use because I don't have an unlimited data plan and I don't want anything using the mobile phone network and thus being charged for data usage.
I stop GPRS on the phone using a freeware program called "NODATA". It toggles off the data connection to the phone company. The phone itself and text messaging still work without GPRS. I can then connect to a hotspot and everything else uses wifi instead. SMTP mail, internet browsing, google, search, etc. all flow through the wifi and I don't get billed for it.
See - hXXp://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
Works great for me. Simply toggle GPRS back on only when you need it...
I've heard of others setting up "fake" GPRS connections settings and switching to those. Since the "fake" connection fails, it rolls over to WIFI. But this is much simpler.

Google account connection / Market connection

Ok, I prolly worked myself in to some troubles. The htc hero was launched 2 days ago in netherlands...but was delayed in belgium for another week.
This for the youtube application that cannot exist on the htc hero for Belgium.
So I just went to netherland and bought a htc hero with the youtube application.
After playing with the htc hero I marked a quite big problem
1) I cannot connect to my google email.
With that I cannot connect to the andriod market for apps etc...
Could this be because I'm using my phone in Belgium? Where actually you should have a other phone? I remember reading something about regioblock?
Someone with info/solutions?
I've got the same problem with my Dutch Hero, but I live in the Netherlands (Vodafone NL)
edit : Tried to add hotmail manually (true email apps) works
edit : tried to add gmail manually (true email apps) works!
connecting before market...fails
check in settings > wireless > mobile networks > access point names
select the one for your network and check to make sure there is no proxy listed.
make sure it is just PROXY that you delete, and not MMS PROXY, as otherwise your MMS will stop working.
hopefully that will help.
I get the feeling that some of this stufff i blocked by the network proxies the same as MSN and youtube are blocked by proxies on WinMo handsets.

No I saw that more ppl have this problem.
It's not connecting using UMTS or WiFi, so it's not a network problem, it's a Hero problem.

Their was only the base mobile internet (gprs.base.be) and base MMS.
The base mobile internet was not marked on,so I did that but stil not working...
Just reset your phone to fabric settings and fill in your gmail account when the phone bootes (in the phone setup wizard) and everything will work fine.
Shut down the phone and press home button + back button + power button to start the reset, follow the screen for insructions.
They told me you have to have connection true 3g with your sim card...
To make the first connection you need this and no wifi...
I copy from the android forum :
I'll say it again.
You CAN'T set up Google Sync through an unprovisioned data package.
Now I though you could use wifi to set it up but you can't. You HAVE to set up Google Sync through 3G and it has to be through a Mobile Internet add-on!
Once set up you can use wifi/2g/3g/hsdpa
I know it doesnt make any sense but Google Sync doesn't use WiFi for the first set up and the Service Provider blocks Google Unless you use one of their data tariffs... Really Google should be provisioned to set up through wifi but probably part of this anti piracy malarky...
Yet again awsome phone, shockingly bad service providers.
Just wait till the data is provisioned and restart your phone. No luck then reset to factory defaults and try again.
(I had to do the same thing)
I had problems with connecting to Market then I did a hard reset on the phone and setup google account during initial wizard and it worked ok.
If your 3g network has restrictions you can always try wi-fi at your local hotspot
I still can't get wifi to provide a data connection, has to bephone network. Have tried several factory reboots :-(
if you are willing to experiment you could maybe flash your hero with WWE R3 rom release (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533808)
However, be prepared to accept the fact that USB might not work until newer edition of ROM is available
not sure i believe that, as i have one at work and have signed in multiple times to google after a hard reset without a sim even being in the phone!
It even asks you if you want to use Wifi during the intial start up process, so it definitely CAN use the wifi for the initial set up, or at least the one we have here can!
just received hero and this misfunctionality is really irritating.
Does anybody knows how to reinstall this applications new?
it should be gmail, market and gtalk.
thanks in advance-
very odd.
Had a friend in NL that had this problem, but when we looked, it turned out that only the Vodafone MMS APNs had been set up (or were the only ones visible) and creating one manualy fixed the problem. He didn't have WiFi to try with at the time.
it was very strange as again, he could browse over 3G!
just checked....the settings are OK: Vodafone IT, but still can not get in.
tried also without a sim, only wifi, same result no connection...
should i really reset it? any other ideas?
thx in advance
I did the reset....
I made sure I was directly at my wifi spot...connected to gmail went ok...market now works perfectly...
Strange tho...
could there be some sort of automatic check in with the google servers the first time the handset is ever turned on? maybe if that fails, it could be linked?
reset, first config done, now it works great, some things are real mistery....
thanks to all
hi guys
i dont know if this the right pleace to ask but
does the hero have AUTO SETUP CONNECTION ??
that when you first time put a sim card or go to other network the phone auto setup your data connection . like htc diamond
I guess the network branded ones may not, but the unbranded one i have been using at work certainly does.

[Q] No Mobile Web Connection on Android 2.3

Hi all,
First Post I've done a search but can't seem to find an answer. I guess they are pretty common keywords though.
Last week I put CoreDroid Android 2.3 on my HTC HD2. I've had a few issues but have been able to find solutions apart from this one.
I'm not getting any web connection either through the browser, email, facebook etc. None of the apps can connect to the net even though the icon is displayed at the top (H, G, E, 3G etc). It has no problem when I'm at home and it connects via my WiFi, but when I'm out, I get no data connection. In the settings, I have it selected to use either WiFi or Mobile Web.
Any ideas?
well there can be many things that what is making it not work but first start off.... who is your provider, next look to see if your apn is right under wireless & network settings > mobile network > access point names
Thanks. You can tell I'm new to this
It was the APN settings.
Its cool everyone had to start somewhere and believe me I'm still new at it just have a great background with computer stuff
