Using virtual keyboard when hard keyboard is out. - EVO Shift 4G General

I recall someone asking about this, stating that they like to type in landscape with the VK, and that it would fit their hands better if they could slide out the hard KB, and still use the VK. I searched for the post but cannot find it, so I apologize to the mods for starting a new thread (if you are aware of the thread to which I am referring, please merge this with it).
To get to the point, smart keyboard released an update today that allows one to do this. It is a paid app, but there is a trial version to see if you like it. I bought smart kb when it came out, and even though I am in the swype beta program, I still prefer smart kb (I am making nothing off this kb, so please do not take this for something it is not).

I believe it was herb hammer, or how ever it is... but you know the guy he is always posting around here haha.
EDIT: it was herbthehammer . and here is the thread, it was in the General section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922848

Moved to general and cleaned of irrelevant and possibly offensive posts. Please keep this on topic, thank you.

Haha I'm sorry I missed all the fun... impailer is always so ontop of things.

Opera 9.51b1 for Windows Mobile 5/6 Pocket PC

Dowloaded new version of opera onto my Elfin (I think, the memory extended tTouch) and just started playing with it, and like it so far, but can someone help out. I have dark Keypad installed and use it for everything but whenever I try to type anything in opera it starts to open keypad then decides better and opens up the original HTC crappy qwerty one instead. I just can't seem to stop it doing so, and it's really anoying. Anyone have any ideas?
If not then does anyone know how I can unistall all other keyboards, and will this force it to us the Keypad. Or is only having one keyboard a little dangerous.
Cheers.

doesn't the other thread only talk about opera 9.5 or is opera 9.5 rev1958 = 9.51? i'm a bit confused..
Some people will waste more energy trying to point out what you're doing wrong in one of the million plus discussion forums on the internet than what it would take to actually answer your question.
The official Opera beta is a great browser but it has two major flaws that you can't fix and can only wait until the next release. One is the keyboard issue you've mentioned. That is the deal killer for me. The second is it turns of the sounds for text message/email alerts.
Neither can be fixed as of yet.
Wrong place for the question

Basically, the Development and Hacking forum is for developers to share their projects. Kind of a sounding board to beta test and continue developing their apps. When people post their questions in the open forum it kind of clogs up the search engine with garbage. It makes things harder to search for.
You should search for your topic, read the entire thread to see if your question has been answered already. Then if it is a new question, post inside of that thread. You will receive a much friendlier response.

Anyway to stop the verizon media page when mounting phone to PC?

This is really down right annoying. Every single time I plug my phone in to the usb port, a Verizon Media page loads. Is there anyway to stop this?
I'm guessing the search button was broken?

Right click on the moto icon and change the option there.. its in the bottom right task bar
I even called verizon and ask them WTF and they are like "i never heared of this before" and the even transfered me to level 2 and they still didnt know

hey dude seriously though, one night i spent hours trying to search for something before i made a post. and it doesn't help that one must wait thirty seconds before searching again, and low and behold someone already posted a thread about it. the only thread in the whole forum i'm guessing, but yet i wasn't able to find it only because my words were not exactly that of the original thread. My point being is that this is a cool website where people go to help each other out. and the only thing i find more annoying than multiple threads resembling the same subjects, is the one person trolling around slapping links to other threads while being unnecessarily rude about it. if this is really all the better you can do to be polite in this forum then maybe you should switch to apple and continue to hold yourself above others and have it be accepted by the elitist peers you would gain. other than that do the world a favor and play nice. please.

Not your typical rant.......

First off let me say that this is not against Sprint or Samsung (shocker). I know my way around a computer but am no way a developer. Before I ever loaded a rom I read and did my research it took me betweem 24 to 48 hours before I felt confident enough to root and flash and if I had any questions I searched the forums for a solution. Its not hard. Now here comes the complaint. I know they say there are no stupid questions but damn, I see the same question over and over again when there are easily found answers right in front of your face. Don't be lazy and read, no one one here gets paid to answer your questions that have already been answered. I'm not saying there aren't legitimate questions because there are plenty of them and that's not what is bothering me at all. I guess what I'm trying to get at is do the effing research take your time and you will figure it out, and stop asking what is the best rom it is the most worthless question on here because no one can give you the right answer. One more thing if you do run into a problem try and figure it out before running to the computer and then maybe you could actually contribute. That's all sorry for such a long post.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Couldn't agree more. I've been a longtime member with a very low post count. Unless you're the first or second person to download a rom and notice a secific bug to report, the community is large enough that very rarely do you need to post as someone else already has.
Not to mention its a self perpetuating problem. If less people were posting the same thing 10 times, there would only be 1/10th the amount of posts to read through to find your answer to begin with.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
A lot of people say that, and yeah, people need to do some research first or something...but for some people..they really aren't being lazy or anything, they just really dont know that thats what they are supposed to do.
Let me put it like this..I saw this on my facebook yesterday. Someone I know was asking how somebody got their phone to look they way it did (the guy took a screenshot of his Vibrant with a Gingerbread theme). The guy told him to either ask me or to come to xda. Now, the guy who asked had a Hero and doesnt know what rooting is...he probably doesnt even know how a forum (or really, how this forum) works. So when he gets here, the first thing he'll do is register and make a thread asking that question. Since he'd be a new user, he wouldn't know how many times the question has been asked, hell, he wouldnt even really know where to look. It'd be his only question and to him, he thinks that he'll be able to get the answer and leave and its done.
Now, thats the only time I say we should tolerate such behavior. but for users that have been on here a while and have been posting and contributing, there's no excuse.
Typical rant.
You opened a new thread, clogging the front page just like those you hate.
The words you speak will never truly reach those who don't read before posting... by definition.
Waste of time and space, get over yourself.
Why does this bother people so much. Ignore the threads/questions if you have an issue with them. Some people aren't aware of the resources. Being a prick about it doesn't help. These same rants have been done over and over and over...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
What a SHOCKER! Another typical "non-typical" rant.
But, you know, you're right. No one should be allowed to post until they've read all 3000+ posts in this forum. No one is allowed to ask other's opinions on the best ROM. No one is allowed to think differently than you.
Wanna know why the HTC side is so good? It's not because HTC releases source code (You should have seen the community in the early days before anyone released code). It's because the users are helpful. They contribute. They don't rant.
You, and users like you, are the reason the community is falling apart. Get in there and answer some questions. Contribute. Post to the useful threads so they stay close to the top. Add to the Wiki. Don't sit around and complain. These forums are for everyone, not just you.
You have only 12 posts, and the only thing you can contribute is "restart your phone" or "use a different USB cable?"
Here's my plea for the mods to lock this thread before we spiral out of control. What do you mean, it's too late?

Or, you could post a like to the wiki, pointing the noobs in the right direction. Answer the question and the thread falls to the bottom, and useful stuff with high post counts rise to the top.
Here's an example:
"Hey man, totally get where you're coming from. Rooting seems tricky, but it's not. Here's the guides in the wiki. It's got most of your questions answered. The search is useful if you can't find it there. Glad to have you on XDA.
But I guess it's much more useful to post inane responses on useless threads. Crap floats.

I don't buy that at all. If you've been on the internet more than 10 minutes, searching should always be your first instinct.
flat out, most people just dont even know what to search for, keywords will get you the right information, but also knowing the key words is what is troubling the new people.
I'm also one of those old members with years of lurking experience, because i know to search. But, at the same time, i don't tell people to do it. He'll i barley give advice... Mainly because i just come here, give rep, and get what info I need and then leave.
Let the forums grow i say... the more questions are asked, the easier they can be answered later, because of the keywords aspect. If someone doesnt know the keywords, they will ask a question with wrong ones, and then get corrected. and later down the line, someone searching with the same wrong keywords can find the answer... At least i hope it works out like that, i would like to think it does to some degree...
Anyways... my 2c
The only problem I have with searching is this: my laptop crashed a while back so I haver to search with the phone and xda app. The xda app search sucks. It brings up irrelevant posts. So since i can't use the search feature, unless I go to the site through the web browser, I just read the wiki and search post by post lol. I am for the side that says, if you don't like the post don't read it. Be helpful, not insane. Some attitudes on here are equivalent to some one coming up to you on a street, new to the town, and asking where mcdonalds is, and some of your responses would be: Look up in the sky for the big f?%#ing golden arches before I shot you in the head with my glock. That is a little over board. I say search, but if the didn't don't get mad.

Man, more people are familiar with school than the internet...and in school you usually ask the teachers questions before you whip out your book to find the answer. Most people also try to act like themselves online like they do in real life...and since in a real life situation there more likely to ask a question than search for the answer...so first instinct would probably be asking that question, that is, if you arent used to forums (specifically this one).
Very serious business.

Failing to search occurs in ANY forum out there. The difference with the Epic scene is we have more self-proclaimed moderators than any board I am a member of. There are simply too many people trigger happy to call out a “noob” who may or may not know what it is that they are looking for.
It’s a shame that we are so quick to assume that someone is lazy.
I am here several times a day. More often than not, you will see folks spending more time correcting other’s forum posting etiquette than actually helping or contributing. In the other forums I frequent (mostly cars), the members actually help one another and asking questions, regardless of them previously posted, is no problem at all.
Go figure, the forums where mistakes cost A LOT more money in damages is stress-free compared to one that can almost always be fixed with a good old odin.
I definitly feel like an ass for posting this in the first place. I guess I should have been more specific when I posted. I apologize to anyone I offended. I have no problem helping anyone that needs help it just aggravates me when people ask a question one a thread that was answered on the previous page. But whatever I honestly don't give two squirts what people think about me.

[Q] Gingerbread Keyboard

I don't have it i don't know anything about it I wanted to know more regarding it though. So the gods of this forum forgive me and my simple question. Is there something preventing us from being able to run it on the Fascinate. I know all the Galaxy S phones are different and all but having seen it on the Vibrant it seems so much better then the one we have and swype. So i put the question out there what is holding us back and where can i donate to make it happen lol

To answer your ? No. Does it Matter? No.Its a forum regarding android development for the Verizon Fascinate. I ask if a Android 2.3 Gingberbread keyboard has been DEVELOPED for the Fascinate considering i haven't read anything regarding it. Its a perfectly valid question and by all means don't respond to it. Knowing i put the question is a public medium i can expect to get some good responses and some not so good ones. So no need to be a Troll. If this specific forum wasn't for questions then explain to me why there is a an option to denote in the topic of a newly opened thread that it is a question. So what ur trying to get at I don't know. I openly joked at it potentially being a already covered topic and from my understanding was simpler then it seem. So rather then try to make this into a big mess why not just give a nice response to the question rather then perpetuate stupidity in a online community. Just sayin lol. Maybe, before flipping out on other people, you should read the ****ing rules and post your questions in the general section. Or do some research on, I dunno, Google? You are the one perpetuating stupidity, as you put it, by not following simple guidelines for this DEVELOPMENT section.

I'll spell it out then: The development section is for development related threads. Threads about not knowing where the GingerBread keyboard is have nothing to do with development. At best, it belongs in the General Section, at worst the Themes and Apps sections. If I were a mod, I would have moved it myself. There are numerous threads describing searching - how to use the search tool for XDA, and that a Google search is also preferable before even thinking of posting a thread.
I apologize for losing my cool, you caught me on a bad day, it seems, but that does not excuse not bothering to search (or search hard enough) and it does not excuse making some drawn out connection between a question about a keyboard somehow related to development. As you can see by looking in the section, most (unfortunately not all) of the threads are regarding ROMs, kernels, developed applications, things of that nature. The reason you see so few question threads is because they get moved to the General Section.
Moral of the story, SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH, and if you have a question, it belongs in the General section. Again, sorry I lost my cool, but this sort of thing is getting out of hand. It's a Development section, not a "I couldn't find it" section.
Perfectly understandable man. But, and this is my last rebutle I offer because i feel we have reached somewhat of a common ground, again through my search no matter how extensive or not for that matter i was under the belief and understanding that the Gingerbread keyboard would have to pe developed for the Fascinate in order to correctly work. So i mean there is a no way to argue the knowledge i do or don't have or something i truly didn't understand. I put it forth in the first post it might be a dumb question and a simple answer would have been nice but again i knew what i was getting into. Also its not like the fourm has very high traffic with new developments. But i digress, so go easy and as i said before too this isn't like this a topic that is beaten to death here much like the ongoing Froyo things. But again thanks for being cool. Peace and Topic DEAD.

Yes, because making a joke justifies a selfish act of laziness. Posting questions in the correction section helps prevent a big mess. Not correcting people's mistakes in an online community would perpetuate stupidity and contribute to a "big mess." Just sayin lol.

DL30 froyo rom Samsung Widgets disappearing?

Anybody have any ideas. I am aware that devs are not supporting the original leak. But im just looking for info more than anything. Every once in a while i will hit the home button and as soon as i return to the home screen the calendar clock, and the feeds and updates widget are no longer there.
I think I know what you're talking about. If you wait a little bit they come back... think it's the launcher resetting. Did it to me a lot too, switched to super clean, haven't seen it since *knock on wood*.
This belongs in general. Read Me
But it happens to me to with beautiful widgets. Time and again. i just deal with it since this is not the final build.
I understand what your guys are saying but thats not my problem. im fully aware that if you use adobe flash, or apps that use a lot of resources that if you hit home sometimes it will refresh the home screen (happened all the time on the Original droid). My problem is the widgets disappear all together meaning they dont reappear. Ohh and this isnt a general question this question refers to an unofficial rom aka ROM DEVELOPMENT!!!
Also its not all the widgets that disappear it just the Samsung widgets (i only use calendar clock, and feeds and updates widget)
If you read that link you would see that your question should have gone in the leak thread. Or your thread should have been started in general. Why must people try to justify their mistakes?
good day. From the Fascinate sporting the XDA app.
Here are few key excerpts so you don't have to read the whole thing:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording)? Did you double check all the steps? Did you do a wipe or hard reset?
So remember… before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can’t answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?
There are way to many people on this forum that obviously don't get any ass.

I lol'd. Agreed.
And same here op. It bothered me for awhile cause I really like the program monitor widget and that blue digital clock. I ended up just getting another widget from the market but touchwiz seems to make it all shaky every time I went to another screen. Wish there was a fix, but I just deal with it.

If that's the case then consider it their sacrifice so YOU can have a nicely running phone. So stfu and listen to them when they tell you what you should have been doing in the first place.

First of all, I'm married, so of course I don't. And second, I don't see how sexual frustration = desire for the development board to remain uncluttered with stuff that belongs elsewhere. Can you explain that?
Lol its all in fun.
I switched to the official leak useing the official kernel and widgets are not disappearing now....

It must be our proper grammar, correct spelling, and common sense.
Stop being such a troll.
Seriously? He just wanted to know why his Widgets are disappearing. If you seriously expect anyone new to this forum to read through a big list of rules, it sucks all the fun out of being an android user. He posted in the wrong section, we get it. It's now dead and done. Let's try and help with an explanation as opposed to making him feel stupid for posting in the wrong section. If it's as simple as telling them once to not post such things in here again and move the thread, why doesn't that just happen?

^I agree with you wholeheartedly, and I dont think they were trying to attack him personally, but...
it's a matter of frustration that established users have here with people completely disregarding the rules (and this is coming from someone with low post count). To my understanding the development fora are supposed to be FOR devs, not end-users. I think our role as end-users (in this development forum) is to provide support in terms of bug reporting (or whatever the dev might need) and such WITHIN specific dev threads. By not adhering to the rules, new users are unintentionally changing the dynamic of how these fora are supposed to operate.
So they're not trying to be d*cks, they're just trying to maintain the integrity of this forum.

Let me put it into context for you:
Here is the third post of the thread. It contains a simple reminder to please post in the correct section, and an answer to the original question. Exactly as you suggest, telling him once.

Here is the very next post. It shows the original poster, who obviously didn't read the provided readme in the above post, attempting to justify his posting in the wrong section. This is where it became an issue, when the OP, instead of admitting his mistake and avoiding misplaced topics in the future (which would be perfectly forgivable, and not a problem) defends his uninformed postition with his own flawed logic.

Easy solution: Read the rules, and when you're corrected by someone with 10 times your post count, who provides verification, just admit you were wrong.
How about a solution to this problem,, in the sub forum section page change the expalnation of the 4 sub forums to capatilazation and place it before the actual sub forum link and change the sub forum link to un capitalized font . I think this might help force people to rerad first before clicking the link.

Better idea just password protect this section so only devs can post here. FYI there will be about 4 posts a month in this forum then lol.

No one has a problem with everyone being able to post in the development forum, Just people cluttering it up with things that belong in the general forum. I will never understand how people can argue so hard for anarchy. If developers and veterans are complaining about the state of the site, then maybe you ought to get your act together or we'll just leave. Then who's going to help you with your issues? Other noobs who have won the right to post wherever the hell they want by driving off the people who actually make roms and mods and fixes. If the op wanted a topic for his specific issue, he should have posted it in general. If he wanted to post in development he should have done so in the thread for the rom he is using, not created a new thread. It's clearly stated in the rules. Why is that such a problem to some people?

I'm sorry dev, but the number of people who are dumb and being asses gonna to out strip you by more than 100 to 1. You should learn to tolerate that as being the norm, to have common sense is pretty much a crime to humanity and the norm.

He's a troll, just ignore him. This thread should be locked since the OP has been helped and it's just going downhill.
Thanks for all your work sonofskywalker, I keep alternating between Blackhole and Superclean still trying to figure out which is a better fit.
