Opera 9.51b1 for Windows Mobile 5/6 Pocket PC - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Dowloaded new version of opera onto my Elfin (I think, the memory extended tTouch) and just started playing with it, and like it so far, but can someone help out. I have dark Keypad installed and use it for everything but whenever I try to type anything in opera it starts to open keypad then decides better and opens up the original HTC crappy qwerty one instead. I just can't seem to stop it doing so, and it's really anoying. Anyone have any ideas?
If not then does anyone know how I can unistall all other keyboards, and will this force it to us the Keypad. Or is only having one keyboard a little dangerous.
Cheers.

doesn't the other thread only talk about opera 9.5 or is opera 9.5 rev1958 = 9.51? i'm a bit confused..

Some people will waste more energy trying to point out what you're doing wrong in one of the million plus discussion forums on the internet than what it would take to actually answer your question.
The official Opera beta is a great browser but it has two major flaws that you can't fix and can only wait until the next release. One is the keyboard issue you've mentioned. That is the deal killer for me. The second is it turns of the sounds for text message/email alerts.
Neither can be fixed as of yet.

Wrong place for the question

Basically, the Development and Hacking forum is for developers to share their projects. Kind of a sounding board to beta test and continue developing their apps. When people post their questions in the open forum it kind of clogs up the search engine with garbage. It makes things harder to search for.
You should search for your topic, read the entire thread to see if your question has been answered already. Then if it is a new question, post inside of that thread. You will receive a much friendlier response.

Because this is a development thread. Where people develope programs and provide assistance on them. Its not the yellow pages. No one here works for you. We are not your secrateries. New threads like this clog up the forum and make it difficult for those of us who use search. Take some time to read the forum rules.
Here is the hint. Top of this page to the right is a "Search" button. Its just below your name. Use it to search the contents of your original subject line of this thread. If you can copy/paste the http address of your search result to prove to me you did your due dilegents, but still cant find your answer, I will help you learn how to use search properly so you don't continue to post new threads. But at this point I don't think you have used more than 2 minutes of your time searching on your own.

The reason people tell you to search is because this site, like any other activity has rules. One of them is to READ and SEARCH to find the answers yourself before you post a question that has been answered in numerous other locations. While some people may be overly aggressive in their suggestion that you use the search function, it does not make their point any less valid. There are a lot of people on this site, and all of them are volunteers. Nobody gets paid to be here. When you decide that you're gonna clutter the forum with threads and posts that have already been answered very thoroughly in easily searchable locations then it just makes it more difficult for people who actually do know how to use the site properly to find anything. So in the future, if you have an interesting idea (which you did) then do some looking to see if maybe somebody else had that same idea and post your thoughts there. That way everyone who is interested in that idea can go to one place to follow any development that happens there. Otherwise you are basically saying to all the people who put a lot of time in here, that you think your time is more valuable than their's. Which puts us in this perpetual cycle of people who don't know anything complaining because the people who do know the answers want them to learn how to find the answers rather than just giving them the answer.

Search the entire forum. In fact google the interenet for the question I posted in that thread. It is no where to be found. And it was a development idea posted in a development thread after all that searching had been done. Your not comparing apples to apples. In fact there is no comparable comparison.

I was less of a dip**** and it continued to happen. At least this is getting some attention that may make a noticable difference of noob's continuing down the same old path of ask questions first, search as a last result.
It would be great if the Moderators would put a sticky at the bottom of the sticky posts for this forum titled "How to Use Search before you post a New Thread" since noob's aren't even taking the time to read the forum rules. While their at it make the title of the sticky thread alway stay BOLD even if no new posts are made in it.

Remove the top bar!! X]

I am merely interested in removing a few pixels from the bottom of the start menu / indicator bar at the top of the screen. See, I use Retro Clock w/ a sweet background and a battery bar indicator [wkTask, excellent mgr app] at the top and it would be fiine to see just the sweet minimal gui..
If there already exists a way to remove the top bar, perhaps one of you should post the name of an app ;]
Otherwise, if devs or hackers know a way to shave pixels off an app [by messing with the gui api calls, etc] I would be into hacking together an autorun python script.. Or transparent bar would be good too.. man.. too much to customize. ;]
Cheers,

lots of options exist in this area including the removing of the bar and or reducing its size and or making it transparent. Please either google or use search of this site at the top right of this page. You will get a lot of hits. Keywords "Top bar" or "Tob task bar" or "start bar" etc.
Thanks,

The idea of give them the answer and but tell them to search next time actually hurts this forum. I know it feels good to be helpful but do so by directing them with search topics.
Like right now at the time of this post just 7 topics down in this forum is a thread about top bar. And 2 pages back is another and it keeps going and going. before long the forum will be crowded again with repeat of of information that keeps development threads slowed.

Not really a practical way of doing this as the whole process would just repeat itself.
A few ways of doing this:
1. Leave it as it is
2. Have more categories so questions on specific topics are in specific folders i.e. all game threads in one folder, all threads on battery in other and so on.....but this would create dozens of folders, so again not practical.
3. Have a new setup so noobs aren't actually able to post questions unless they have already searched the forum.....but again, this also isn't practical
4. Have a section for noobs where all basic questions are asked and then another section for other members....but again, I'm not sure this would work either as a person may be posting their first thread but be an experienced user.
Personally, I would just leave it as it is, and possibly just delete a few threads which are useless to clear the waste
Baby and bathwater spring unbidden to mind!

Something that would help i think is better use of the wiki. Each cook having a page, each rom having its own page. each app having its own page. the discussion belongs in forum but ROMs should have their own page then theres 1 location for update info, details ect.

Or integrate an automatic search screen (maybe a popup to act as a temporary block) for:
a) anyone starting a new thread with
b) less than 40 or 50 posts history.
Then continue VIGILANTLY marking and reporting useless/repetitive threads.

I will vote for changing the forum first page. Giving that the number of devices is increasing, it is getting harder to find your phone through all of them. Maybe it is possible to categories it like saying depending on the model year/release date or specificationsod the device. That would be much more interesting than scrolling the whole page waiting to find a specific one.

Summarize
Major issue is looooong threads - which just go on and on. In the case of an answer to a particular problem - as soon as someone has a definitive answer the thread needs to be marked as Solved and the answer put in a reserved slot on the first page. It can me a nightmare going through a dozen solutions to fix a problem - and with people quoting bit's all the time there's probably 50% of the info duplicated.
Still
Best forum going

But the thing is Fallen, I've been trolling these forums for years, ever since I got my universal roughly 3/4 years ago. The majority of posts I have made really has been to help other people.
I am not a noob but have not made many posts, I am a competent programmer and can solve problems without having to post... Usually.
It would be really annoying if the few times I did need to post for help, or to share information, I would have to answer to a stupid popup asking me whether I have searched or not!
However, I do agree there is a severe lack in understanding the search facility on these forums, I think if a NOOB filter were to be placed it should go on join date.
P.S My join date was before Aug 07 I just forgot my email and password

newbie alert!!!

Sorry if this is a stupid question guys, but I've just bought a HD2 with the energy rom already on it, what is this and why is it better than the standard rom?
Hi,
You have 100% right - it is stupid question.
ROM - It's another name for operating system with drivers and settings, its a compilation.
Why You use Win XP on Your desktop instead of Windows 3.11 ?
! Because it's better, it's faster, more intuitive, more stable, it's.....
Each ROM is developed for some reason - somebody fix something or change few things.
In my case HTC gives a sh_ _ on me with ROM updates for my region / country - Only thing to do was to flash unofficial ROM.
Read, then ask question.
wow, thats the way to make a neebie welcome. I know you guys want people to read and search more before posting but come on... Im glad not everone is like that.
I also have a couple of newbie questions but ill post in about 6 months after ive read every single post on the site to make sure no one hs asked the question before.
RReckless
Don't make a evil daemon from me , I start with joke , then gently tell what is what and why with ROM, and on the end give a good advice to search and read before asking.
know it all geeks
dont worry bout him mate u always get some gimp know it all like him on here theres lots of helpful people on here 2
perhaps I should've worded it better, I've haven't had a standard hd2 as it was like this when I bought it, but I meant what is different on the energy rom to standard? also is there asetting to lock the keypad when I press the bottom left phone button? mine just turns the screen off but all you have to do is repress it and your back on, I've already called someone in my pocket

The reason regulars are like that is it wastes everyone's time when you ask the same questions over and over.
It wastes the noob's time typing the message when a simple search up the top can answer it in a few clicks.
It wastes the noob's and the regular's time by making them sift through pages of redundant threads rather than having new original issues - if a noob has an original issue, it may take ages for someone to find it to answer, thats if they manage to find it at all.
A lot of noobs tend to ask the redundant question without searching, then when the thread moves through several pages, they bump it with a "no one going to help!?!" reply. This would move it above an issue that may well have a higher importance, yet it would have been quicker for them to search than to trawl through and find their thread to reply to.
If noobs did more searching, we wouldn't have to keep explaining the reasons why we ask noobs to search every time they don't.

Having said the above, let's pretend a newbie have joined the forum today and have asked a question that may have been asked and solved already or better yet asked something that a no brainer can do.
Does that make it annoying for "regulars" already? Your explanation sounds more like you are saying that "regulars" are obligated to answer questions from a noob, yet it is not.
and you said ---> "then when the thread moves through several pages, they bump it with a "no one going to help!?!" reply." <---- and these kind of things affect the so called "regulars"? Does it hurt??? that you need to harass a newbie?
My reaction would be, so what if it moved several times??? I've seen a lot of a very old post that is being answered to this date.

Theres no need for your reaction here.
Just ask yourself this... why is there a sticky thread right at the top of this forum that tells people how to use search?

That sticky serves as guide to a do a search, because not all users know how to use search.
My point is, you and the rest of the so called "regulars" act like they have the right to harass or treat newbies like they did have no education at all.
It doesn't mean you see "newbie or junior member" then they should be treated this way.
There's another way of saying things like "Hey man, try searching the forum by using this" instead of "make sure you DO its extremely annoying for the regulars on this site to keep seeing the same noob questions asked over and over again."

Have you even read that sticky?
It says... and i quote "Remember, please search first before posting on XDA. It is highly likely that your issue/problem has been mentioned before and a solution is at hand."

The way people come across on internet forums is not necessarily how they would come across in a real life conversation. For example... my reading of your posts in this thread gives me the image of you jumping up and down ranting like a madman. Kind of like Animal out of the muppets...
Thats not really you is it?

you are missing the point. =) you just made me laugh by calling me and referring me to "names like that". I don't remember saying something absurd about you personally.

you see... that is my point
im not insulting you intentionally... just telling you how you come across to me... but you have taken it as an insult :-(
Just to re-iterate... my original post here (ie/ telling the noobs to use search) was not intended as any kind of harassment... just a solid nudge in the direction of the search function.
I mean theres a moderater sticky saying the exact same thing i am saying!
Granted his words might seem friendlier then mine but look at the post i was replying to. Theres an example of someone using sarcasm to try and make the point that it takes too much time to search.
The reason it takes a long time to search is because noobs DONT search and post the same questions over and over. Its an endless circle of death.

"Great to see that there is another side of yourself".. after all.
and oh yeah, there is a nicer way to put it instead of the "a solid nudge in the direction of the search function". In case you do not know, feel free to ask me.

Does the HD2 have any good solutions to the graphics problems?

Hey all,
I was using my HD2 today and I don't like the way the phone has certain lags :/
I know about Chainfire's Patch for HD2, and i've heard about another patch that supposedly does the same thing. Also, there seem to be various different forums for boosting the performance on the HD2. I would like (if this is possible ) to have the best known combination of registry tweaks and programs and modifications in one thread so that they'll be easier for everyone to locate I think key improvement factors would include Performance, Smoothness in day to day graphics eg Scrolling through the Album in Landscape or Music or the Start Menu, Speed (The CPU doesn't Idle when it needs to be used for power).
I think what bugs me most is that seemingly slight lag when scrolling through HTC Sense, or when playing Teeter. Sorry if i'm bothering everyone
Thanks for helping
why shall anyone spoon feed You? what about "search" and then "contribute" making such a thread if You feel theres such a need?
... no wonder people are leaving this forum.

And a forum is meant to be searched. Even if there's only one thread for everything (which will not happen I think), one still has to search that thread.
Mod, please delete this!
Elemental Fire,
A little confused by your post. There is a Hints and Tips thread and a Questions thread on here which should cover off most of what you need. Even if everything you wanted was in one thread I bet it would grow to such an extent that you would have to search through it at some point to find and understand the variations that pop up with published solutions, tweaks, etc.
You have 2 options; start your own thread and populate it with all the "best features" you are looking for or keep a log of the things you find that will be useful to you. For the former you get to put some time into the forum and help others out, for the latter you satisfy your own needs.
Hope this helps.
