Insanely slow upload speeds - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the mytouch 4g in Cincinnati. My download speeds stay between 2 and 5 MB per second. It's my upload speeds I'm confused by. The upload stays around .5MB per second. With the speeds this thing is capable of, I don't get it. Anybody else seen this?
PS. I'm on cm7 nightly builds.
#AngelFace#

mine was doing similar in DFW Metroplex today... .6MB to .8MB download and .2MB to .5MB upload and was showing 3G/H the whole time

Mine has had those speeds since the "4g" network opened in Cincinnati.

T-Mobile HSPA+ . . .Atlanta GA

I just got a Text message yesterday on my HD 2 from T-Mobile USA in Atlanta, GA. The message said my area had been upgraded to HSPA+ and I should be getting theoretical download speeds of 22megs with my current phone.
I ran a bunch of speed tests and I'm still getting my usual 1.5megs download. Anyone else get this text and what speeds are you receiving.

Actually the HD2 can't quite get the full HSPA+ speeds (21Mbps currently, with 42Mbps to come shortly)...it actually caps out at 7.2Mbps. But, you should still get a little more than 1.5, depending on your location, signal strength, etc.
What speed test method are you using? the HSPA+ speeds don't actually kick in until you're transferring more than just a small bit of data, so some of the speed tests out there aren't using big enough files to trigger that. I use www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/, and it does a great job of registering the full speeds this phone is capable of (only works on IE browser on the phone, fyi).
FYI, I got that same text here yesterday, even thought HSPA+ was rolled out here weeks ago, and I've been enjoying those speeds for a while now. I regularly get in the 3-5Mbps range, with occasional spikes all the way up to 7Mbps+, on the download side. On the upload side, they made some recent updates even after the HSPA+ rollout (I've been told that that's common), following which I can now upload at 1.5Mbps or more! (~500kbps was my previous limit on that)
I check Atlanta, Ga on t-mobile data coverage and it seems pretty covered in the center.
I got the text yesterday 2 but since I got my HD2 8 months ago I've been having speeds of 5-6 Mbps download speeds of 550 kb/s ~ 600 kb/s which is good.
I live in New York though.
Check your speeds at speakeasy
and test it outdoors without interference from roofings or on a higher level like a second floor near the window.

I live in Smyrna (just north of Atlanta). I didn't receive the text message, but I just ran the Speakeasy test several times and got ~7.5Mbps for downloads and 0.97Mbps for uploads. There is a cell tower a couple of miles from my location, and I've noticed over the last few weeks that whenever I get very close to it, I get a strong (4 bars) H signal. However, the dropoff in signal strength with distance from the tower appears to be quite severe. At home (inside) I sometimes get a couple bars of 3G, if I'm lucky, but I usually only get three bars or so of Edge whenever I'm indoors. Outside, the signal increases to about two bars of 3G.
I get 0.44 Mbps download and 0.06 Mbps upload.

Thanks for the info. You were right. I'm getting downloads of 3.6Mb/s. Truth is I've never had speed issues with T-Mobile USA. I have no buffering with Slingplayer or youtube videos.
Buford, GA Speed Test
I also did not receive a text message. There was a strange blank text message from number 129?
I was out in Dacula, GA and tested my speeds.
First off I get dropped calls in Dacula all the time inside my friends home.
I usually get speeds from speedtest.net that are 0.98 Download & 0.56 Upload.
I tested using speakeasy.net today at 10:58pm and got these speeds below
Download Speed: 4209 kbps (526.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 353 kbps (44.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
I received these results from speedtest.net

im near nyc, ny. I didn't get any texts but I do get a 'H' where it used to say 3g with download speed of 1.2mb/s and an upload speed of .9mb/s. does that mean im on hspa+?

[Q] Extreme 4g slowness - Fort Worth, TX

Is anybody experiencing pathetic download speeds on 4g? I've been getting 128 kbps down the past two days (prior to this speeds were excellent). Upload speeds are good, so i'm inclined to think that this is a local issue? Any ideas?
I'm using AvaV9 with the latest radios.

Well I dont turn on 4g often but yes very slow and not reliable in North Richland Hills....I am normally in Dallas during the day where i only max between 3-5mps..At night i connect to wifi....My opinion, it waste battery and only good if your outside in our area/ regular 3g is always reliable 512kbps up and down
my friend is getting about 10mb/sec.
Although clear has been acting up. Been extremely slow the past week.
I am in slc utah but have been having the same issues. 4G download speeds are very slow off and on but upload speeds are still at standard 1 mb. I'm still trying to figure this one out....

shoo, in Richardson (just a little outside of Dallas) I get 2 mb down at home but 10 mb down at my school..
Edit: I take that back, I tested that like a couple of months ago, after posting that comment I went back and tested my 4G at my school...I was gettin a little under 100kb down and 3mb up. That dont make no sense.
Edit2: Ok, what the hell goin on here? I get home where I have 4g, but no bars, and Im pulling 1mb down...haha this 4g is playing with my emotions!
I am seeing the same thing in Frisco, Dallas, Plano and Carrollton although... It is VERY hit and miss. From my office I typically get 3-5mbps, it seems that here recently something has happened and there are times when I get less than 100k. Are any of you guys using an EVO? I've also noticed that with the 4G turned on the CPU goes to 100% sometimes (haven't been able to replicate with 4G off.)
Boss has EVO, wife has EVO and we all see the exact same thing...
Same thing happening here in vegas 500 down and 1 or more up

I'm in the Mid-Cities area, Euless to be more specific. I just got 6mb down and almost 1mb up. Maybe it was being worked on or something today. Anyone want to verify that it's good again?
In Fremont, near SF, I've never had a problem with my 4g. Even with just 0-1bar of 4g, it's always been solid and consistent, around 8mbps down
Yea, I had a peice of paper on my door this morning saying 4g tour is up. So I decided to try 4g again and now on I'm getting 5mbps down and 2 up. Yesterday I posted up above in this thread with horrible speed. North Richland Hills/ Ft worth

Anybody consider the elevated solar activity since sunday as a possible cause of the current issues? I know my cable has been pixelating, and my home internet has been intermittant. Just something to think about.
Also I have never seen speeds as fast as you guys get on my EVO. Of course I run CM6 so I only get 3g but I have never had speeds above 1mbps usually alot less. Oh and I'm in the North Fort Worth/North Richland Hills/Haltom City area.
Noel
My 4g speeds are back to normal.
Have been getting terrible speeds all week long in Downtown Dallas. Both 4g and 3G have been very slow.
yo
my 4g speed hits 10-11mb/s on average right here in fort worth, right around the 820/35 area and pretty much up and down 820, all the way to jackborrow (sp)?
haven't tried downtown area yet but ill test it out and let ya know
Mine is very hit and miss the last few days. I will have periods of good speed, then it slows to a crawl. With tethered downloading I especially notice an initial burst of speed, then at times it slows to 10kb/sec =(.
Well i just found this snippet from some article
Clearwire told Electronista:
Throtting is based on the current utilization for each cell tower, and many low-use towers do not throttle speeds at all. For high-use towers, throttling occurs during peak-use times.
A customer’s maximum speed is based on the number of gigabytes of data transferred in the past seven days and the download speeds for the past 15 minutes. Speeds are recalculated every 15 minutes, at which point a throttled customer will be bumped up to a higher speed. Rather than implementing one speed for throttling, the calculations will move customers between 48 different speed brackets.
The worst offenders using peer-to-peer software on Clearwire’s network may face repeated throttling.

Seems to fit my symptoms like a glove. Bums me the **** out too, because when im throttled I might as well be on dial up.

Noticeable 4g speed improvement in Columbus, OH area.

A month ago, the fasted I could download a file was roughly 750 kb/s. Today, I his 1.2MB and stayed there for a little bit. That's almost a 500kb/s increase.
We've had 2 PRL updates since I last tried and the rumor that Sprint has been beefing up its 4g network.
I can notice it, anyone else?
i usually get 5-8mbps since it first started showing up
I can definitely agree!
PRL updates have NOTHING to do with speeds ON the sprint network. They only tell the phone what towers to roam on when roaming, thats it.
As far as 4g speeds in Columbus, the last 3 times I was there for work, I could easily pull in 6mbps down, and about 3mbps up. Although the signal strength was very spotty though.
What's your 3g speeds like if your 4g is that slow? I average 1.2 on my 3g

Faster speeds on Atrix the last few days?

Has anybody else seen faster speeds, especially download, on their Atrix over the last few days Using speediest, I'm now getting constistenly over 2.5mbps (3031, 2650 and 3949 today) down and 200+ up where I was consistently getting 1200-1300 down and 125-150 up since I got the unit. Didn't know if it was a fluke for me or At&T might have done something over the weekend in the NY area to improve speed. System show HSDPA and I have the most recent OTA upgrade

Apparently in some markets instead of just turning it all on at once they're slowly rolling out speed increases up to HSPA+ standards. I think Chicago people have said they're seeing the same.
Those are 3G speeds not even half of what hspa+ is capable of. I got those speeds on my LG Quantum that is a strickly 3G device.

speeds have been faster in my area all around and that has caused me to almost blow through my cap
Los Angeles CA 90016 - Average Download = 1.7mbps / upload = 250kbps
Phoenix is getting no love from AT&T. HSPA+ is here in name only and still crippled for non-Apple devices.
My 2year old iPhone 3GS gets faster upload and download speeds than my Atrix.
I live in Pittsburgh and my speeds vary yesterday i got 3529kb dl and 392kb up and today im getting 1029kb dl and 275kb up maybe because of the weather?

Tmobile USA hsdpa signal

so before i updated to a new radio (12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03)
i ran speedtest and i was getting about 0.44Mbps
after the new radio update now im getting 0.37Mbps on HSDPA :/ how can i increase the crappy speed? I understand some 4g coverage isnt that good in the u.s but to get speeds that low on hsdpa.. theres gotta be something wrong
Yeah, that shouldn't be right. I can consistently pull 5-8mbps with an hspa signal, did you do the efs wipe after flashing the new radio and clear dalvik cache?

Are you sure that you're not being throttled for going over your data cap? Those speeds are super low. Like the other reply I regularly pull 8mbps down and 3mbps up.
Sounds like your over your cap. No other reason that should be happening unless you have no bars and are in a basement.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
No, that's not throttled speeds. I was throttled and consistently got around 0.07 Mbps down and up.
I can see these 8 Mbps down speeds being plausible if you live in a metropolitan area, but if you live out in the middle of nowhere like me, the best download speed I have gotten is around 3 Mbps, but typically around 1.3-1.5 Mbps.

I see my best speeds in the suburbs, with fewer users. My slower speeds happen in places like Seattle with tons of people on the network obviously. I believe just a generally slow area giving 1.5mbps ish, but there's something wrong when he's getting only 0.40mbps
I am now testing in the suburbs as I'm visiting home from college.
Also keep in mind signal also plays a large role. I was just downstairs where my signal was -103 dBm, and my download speed was about 1.8 Mbps. Just went upstairs, signal was about -89 dBm and download speed was about 4.0 Mbps (measured twice at each location). Interestingly, both were with UTMS connections.
Wow, -103! The phone has no connection at -113! Eek.
You've found your problem.

That's not even OP... you're referring to the post above yours? He's aware of the lack of signal, which is why he's quoting it and saying that even at -103 he gets 1.8mbps.
