Faster speeds on Atrix the last few days? - Atrix 4G General

Has anybody else seen faster speeds, especially download, on their Atrix over the last few days Using speediest, I'm now getting constistenly over 2.5mbps (3031, 2650 and 3949 today) down and 200+ up where I was consistently getting 1200-1300 down and 125-150 up since I got the unit. Didn't know if it was a fluke for me or At&T might have done something over the weekend in the NY area to improve speed. System show HSDPA and I have the most recent OTA upgrade

Apparently in some markets instead of just turning it all on at once they're slowly rolling out speed increases up to HSPA+ standards. I think Chicago people have said they're seeing the same.

Those are 3G speeds not even half of what hspa+ is capable of. I got those speeds on my LG Quantum that is a strickly 3G device.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

speeds have been faster in my area all around and that has caused me to almost blow through my cap

Los Angeles CA 90016 - Average Download = 1.7mbps / upload = 250kbps

Phoenix is getting no love from AT&T. HSPA+ is here in name only and still crippled for non-Apple devices.
My 2year old iPhone 3GS gets faster upload and download speeds than my Atrix.

I live in Pittsburgh and my speeds vary yesterday i got 3529kb dl and 392kb up and today im getting 1029kb dl and 275kb up maybe because of the weather?

tmobile 3g speeds

this is my first week using tmobile in the US with the nexus one.
I am not able to get download speeds more than 800kbps. it does not matter how good the reception is.
I have tried in various places in north CA and in cleveland OH.
I think that such speeds are pretty bad for 3g. with at&t I used to 2-3mbps at times.
my friend with the verizon droid is seeing 1.5mbps-2.5mbps download speed .
what are other users on tmobile are seeing?
seems like tmobile is rate limiting the speeds or their network is just really bad.
How are u measuring the speed? I use the speed test app and it used to have a server close by in San Jose (65 mi) now I have to use a server in new Mexico and I'm in CA so that makes it seem slower too
There are two apps in the market i test with: speedtest.net and extreme speed test.
I also checked with the laptop tethered to the phone. same pathetic speeds. i can hardly call it 3g comparing to the competitors.
Is it the phone or is it tmobiles network?

i just got 2MB/s up and 400 kb/s down
WOW thats whats im talking about best ive ever seen
still waiting for those 6mb/s up and 1mb/s down (a.k.a. my cable high speed enternet at home)
I have never seen verizon that fast in my area, generally 500 kbits to 1mbits but I would say that you are getting the norm for tmo as mine have never reached 1 mbit but can go past 10 mbit on wifi.
BGR did a test a while back although not scientific agrees with the tests I have done in my area.

Try this speed test....
I usually see 1000 - 1200 kbps but quite often see 1700 - 2000 kbps using the speedtest.net app in the android market. Something to remember, your 3G connection is initially UMTS and will switch to HSDPA on demand and when available. You may notice that your first test will show a ping of ~300ms and speeds of 500 - 700 kbps (UMTS), but if you hit "test again" immediately after the first test completes you should see a ping of about ~175ms and approximately double the speed (HSDPA). I've noticed that the default server (closest server according to the speedtest.net app) is usually slow and doesn't give me proper results. I've had very good luck using the Chicago server. Try using the Chicago server and run back-to-back tests, let us know if your results change.
I would agree T-Mobile's 3G is crap. Using a Rogers G1 on AT&T using speedtest.net app, I was seeing over 2Mbit down and over 800kbit up consistently.
T-Mobile's so called "7.2 Mbit upgrade" is a joke. Kind of like their coverage maps. I want to like them, but at least in my area, AT&T obliterates them. It's too big of a different for me. If an AT&T 3G compatible nexus one is released, I will have to get one. I could probably live with the slower speeds if the coverage wasn't so spotty.
Your move T-Immobile.

As a former T-Mo Wireless Engineer Intern, I can tell you that there is only a very very small roll out on 7.2 right now. They are testing the network before they enable more circuits. The original plan when I worked there was for a gradual 2 city per month rollout. Then slowly build the network to cope with added traffic. Its suppose to be a gradual process that will also involve using old equipment and expanding current 3g service. The high speed roll out was priority one, then is service expansion. Also contracts were involved last I saw that would expand coverage 2-fold, but negotiations for tower rights were falling through, so I don't know where thats going.

There is an issue with 3g on the nexus that has been commented on a number of times, and that is the flapping of UMTS and HSDPA. (not to be confused with those flapping between 2g and 3g). With my G1 I was able to get speeds as high as 3Mbit, but I too have only seen 800Kbit max on my nexus and I believe its due to this constant flapping of 3g technologies.
Today is my first day on tmobile with the N1, I've been running on Edge ATT.
I was worried about switching over because my gf has had tmobile and doesn't have great service at our house.
I was afraid mine would be worse with the 3g issues the N1 has been having but it appears to be almost identical to hers.
in my living room we get 1-2 bars 3g and I see test speeds of 50-300 down and 950-1250 up.
I go to my office right above the living room and get 3 bars and 700-900 down speeds with 700-900 up speeds.
No stoked about it but I havnt had any signal swapping issues so I'm going to use it for GPS to test out now and see how it does. GPS and mapping even on edge with ATT was super fast so I have high hopes.

So are you saying that if you pop in the SIM card from the N1 to the G1 in the same place you get 3Mbps vs. 800Kbps on the N1?

Correct, I get full signal at my work (-63dBm 25asu). The G1 didn't skip around and stuck firmly to UMTS, and I was getting much better rates with it. My N1 however maxes out at no more than 800.
@jmcdonald what are you agreeing with LOL were talking about decent speeds then you say you agree with the low speeds??? LOL
Anyway I don't have 3g flopping problems neither did I on my g1
I am seeing speeds in most cases upward of 2.2 mbps... and am even averaging over 1mbps in upload speeds which is pretty good when I have full 3g reception in the Northern NJ area.
I get anywhere from 2.0 - 3.5Mbps down on average, and I have seen up to 4.5Mbps down on occasion. Up is always around 1 - 1.3Mbps.
However, I'm in Philadelphia, and we have HSPA+
Wow, I don't know how you guys are getting DL speeds upwards of 1.5mbps! Here in San Diego, the most I've seen anyone on ATT get is around 1.2mbps, and 1.1 on Sprint. Tmo is usually anywhere from 700-1mbps with some spikes over that now and then.
My G1 and N1 get the same speed range.
I'm in Maryland, just outside of D.C. I also just switched from AT&T to T-Mobile (yesterday actually). I'm also getting DL speeds of like 700-800 kbps. Hope it will someday be a little faster than that.
download - 137kbps
upload - 217kbps
From all the repots in this post it seems that tmob is just slower in some parts of the country and faster in others.
I hope they are planning on catching as 700-800kbps is a joke.

tmo US 3g data speeds

so im using a HD2, with the energy rom and tmo just announced that they are rolling out hspa+ in my city (honolulu) so i figured id do a speed test now just to see the difference when they "flip the switches" on 7/21 (my birthday)
so i pull up dsl reports and run the Iphone (bleh)/smartphone speed test choose 3g and........ 126kbps well maybe its a fluke i rerun it and 51kbps WTF!?!?!?!!?!
so i remember mobilespeedtest.com and i try there and..... 134kbps.....starting to get annoyed and when i compare with other tmo subscribers the average is 580~
so my question is is there something i can do to "fix" my speeds? ive got full signal im always showing "H" oh and im using opera 10.0
In Lexington, Ky I get about 400 kbps. In Cincinnati, like 800-900. I just think Tmob's network is really crappy.
hahaha well your crappy is still 4 times faster than me
just odd its SO slow here where hspa+ is going live in a week
before TMO threw the HSPA+ switch here in Tampa, i regularly saw 600-800kbps download speeds. Now with HSPA+ it seems to average about 3mbps-4mbps and Ive seen it reach as high as 5.5mbps.
I just got through with a road trip from Tampa to northern Mississippi where i lost the HSPA+ coverage after leaving Tampa, i saw around a 1mbps in outskirt areas north of Tampa that doesn't have HSPA+ yet, and once we hit the interstate it was GPRS coverage for a majority of the trip with some EDGE coverage here and there. God i forgot how slow GPRS was!
oh i also forgot to mention im using the stock radio rom.....maybe a different radio would improve data speeds?

soooo apparently its just my apartment that sucks, left the house fro work today and didnt get 50 yards and my speeds jump up to 400~
as i keep walking outdoors my speeds go as high as 1.4 and never went below 400. so when i get to work i figure my speeds will go down as im indoors, wrong i kept getting speeds around 500 tho i didnt see the huge jumps that i did outdoors
We're on the list to have HSPA+ flipped on here in Austin next week, but I'm already starting to see the signs...I can now hit 3-5MB downstream just about anywhere in town.
3mbps-4mbps here in ATL
we are getting an average of about 3mbps-4mbps with HSPA+ in Atlanta, GA
Funny thing when I tether I get 12-15 Mbps. only when I tether tho even if its another phone

[Q] Extreme 4g slowness - Fort Worth, TX

Is anybody experiencing pathetic download speeds on 4g? I've been getting 128 kbps down the past two days (prior to this speeds were excellent). Upload speeds are good, so i'm inclined to think that this is a local issue? Any ideas?

Well I dont turn on 4g often but yes very slow and not reliable in North Richland Hills....I am normally in Dallas during the day where i only max between 3-5mps..At night i connect to wifi....My opinion, it waste battery and only good if your outside in our area/ regular 3g is always reliable 512kbps up and down
my friend is getting about 10mb/sec.
Although clear has been acting up. Been extremely slow the past week.
I am in slc utah but have been having the same issues. 4G download speeds are very slow off and on but upload speeds are still at standard 1 mb. I'm still trying to figure this one out....

Edit: I take that back, I tested that like a couple of months ago, after posting that comment I went back and tested my 4G at my school...I was gettin a little under 100kb down and 3mb up. That dont make no sense.
Edit2: Ok, what the hell goin on here? I get home where I have 4g, but no bars, and Im pulling 1mb down...haha this 4g is playing with my emotions!
I am seeing the same thing in Frisco, Dallas, Plano and Carrollton although... It is VERY hit and miss. From my office I typically get 3-5mbps, it seems that here recently something has happened and there are times when I get less than 100k. Are any of you guys using an EVO? I've also noticed that with the 4G turned on the CPU goes to 100% sometimes (haven't been able to replicate with 4G off.)

Yea, I had a peice of paper on my door this morning saying 4g tour is up. So I decided to try 4g again and now on I'm getting 5mbps down and 2 up. Yesterday I posted up above in this thread with horrible speed. North Richland Hills/ Ft worth

Anybody consider the elevated solar activity since sunday as a possible cause of the current issues? I know my cable has been pixelating, and my home internet has been intermittant. Just something to think about.
Also I have never seen speeds as fast as you guys get on my EVO. Of course I run CM6 so I only get 3g but I have never had speeds above 1mbps usually alot less. Oh and I'm in the North Fort Worth/North Richland Hills/Haltom City area.
Noel
My 4g speeds are back to normal.
Have been getting terrible speeds all week long in Downtown Dallas. Both 4g and 3G have been very slow.
yo
my 4g speed hits 10-11mb/s on average right here in fort worth, right around the 820/35 area and pretty much up and down 820, all the way to jackborrow (sp)?
haven't tried downtown area yet but ill test it out and let ya know
Mine is very hit and miss the last few days. I will have periods of good speed, then it slows to a crawl. With tethered downloading I especially notice an initial burst of speed, then at times it slows to 10kb/sec =(.
Well i just found this snippet from some article
Clearwire told Electronista:
Throtting is based on the current utilization for each cell tower, and many low-use towers do not throttle speeds at all. For high-use towers, throttling occurs during peak-use times.
A customer’s maximum speed is based on the number of gigabytes of data transferred in the past seven days and the download speeds for the past 15 minutes. Speeds are recalculated every 15 minutes, at which point a throttled customer will be bumped up to a higher speed. Rather than implementing one speed for throttling, the calculations will move customers between 48 different speed brackets.
The worst offenders using peer-to-peer software on Clearwire’s network may face repeated throttling.

Seems to fit my symptoms like a glove. Bums me the **** out too, because when im throttled I might as well be on dial up.

[Q] Hspa+ deployed?

My phone's speed through the speedtest.net app at my home got better yesterday. A LOT better. I'm now reliably getting 3.5Mbits minimum, and got over 5 (5.11 was highest) 3 times. The ping is also good, ~125ms. I can find no explanation for these great scores other than "4"g finally being deployed. Anyone else getting better results?
For the record, the best score I ever got at home before this was 2.2Mbits.
upload still sucks... 300Kbits
nothing has changed for me..still paltry download and embarrassing upload.

For the record, I was in Santa Rosa, CA (one of their claimed rolled-out locations) for the past week. When downtown, I had great speeds. If you travel 1-2 miles away from downtown, coverage is hit or miss.
I was there for a week testing it and couldn't have been more frustrated. Constantly dropped calls because it kept switching between networks. I wanted a way to force it to stay on Edge while I was there so I could competently conduct business, but both AT&T and Motorola assured me that there was no way to force it to stay on Edge, as that feature was purposely disabled in the phone's settings.
My iPhone had that function and it came in handy when in bad areas. WTF?!
[edit]
Also, these speed tests in Vancouver, WA (Portland metro area) were tested now. Also, I spoke to 3 AT&T reps + 4 Motorola reps while I was in Santa Rosa, CA. As if it matters, but tracking the help from these companies is important at this stage I think

yeah, I agree. I want the speeds that I had on my Nexus One, but I'm just going to be patient and see if they get their act together with this phone. I love this phone regardless.

NYC users - 3G speed even worse than it was?

I recently updated to stock GB and decided to try some speed tests in different parts of the the city today. This is my first experience with EI22 or anything not based on EC05 for that matter.
Anyway, in my neighborhood (Morningside Heights), data speeds have always been terrible, but I was able to pull pretty decent 3G speeds in most of the rest of Manhattan with Froyo. Today, I drove through Manhattan, starting as far south as Union Square, and worked my way all the way back up the west side. In short, 3G speeds were the worst I've seen them. Areas were I was able to pull in upwards of 0.8 Mbps with Froyo, I could barely crack 0.3 Mbps with Gingerbread. The best I got was about 8th Ave and 14th, were my downstream was 0.5 and upstream of 0.73. Everywhere else hovered between 0.12 and 0.3 down and 0.2 to 0.63 up. In every case, as per usual, 3G upstream was faster than down.
I have no idea if this is a Gingerbread issue, the fault of my Epic or if Sprint's 3G network is just that much worse now than it was a few weeks back, but this is far and away the worst I've seen it since becoming a Sprint customer.
I only ran a handful of 4G speed tests, and those had downstream speeds between 7.33 Mbps and 8.74 Mbs, and meager upstream between 1.37 Mbps and 1.46 Mbps.
I blame apple
They copyrighted 3g and decided to to sue sprint
Sprint was then forced to comply to apples demands and turn of 3g

I agree. Still on Froyo , here are my 7 AM Sat results (Upper East Side, 90's):
3G:
0.34 - 0.7 MBPS down, 0.6 - 0.7 MBPS up, PING: 87-122 MS
- most ping times were under 100 MS
- d/l speeds are inconsistent but generally are closer to the lower end of the range number rather than the higher end
4G:
2.95 - 8.77 MBPS down, 1.47 - 1.50 MBPS up, PING: 119-126 MS
- ping times are consistent, although sucky
- download speeds are very insconsistent
Conclusions:
- it is NOT Gingerbread.
- it is NOT the iPhone launch either - these speeds are similar to what I had since August, way prior to the iPhone launch.
- Sprint's 3G: you get what you pay for. Wifey's completely stock Droid 2 Global (VZW) pulls 1.5 - 2 MBPS down consistently, with consistent PINGs in the 70 MS range.
- Sprint's 4G: great if you can find it, but spotty coverage and battery life drain limit its usefulness. Would take consistent 1.5 MBPS+ 3G with in-building penetration over current version of WiMax any day of the week.
Sprint 3G has always sucked in NYC

Not when I had my Hero. Sprints 3g was pulling upto 5mbps
But ever since I got the epic, my 3g has been horrible. 4g has ALWAYS been great (I keep it running when I'm in ny) but 3g took a big hit.
I came down to florida the day of the snowstorm so I haven't really gotten to see the speeds get worst in nyc, but down here on 3g I'm getting 1.8 mbps (atleast on eh06... since I've upgraded to ei22, I've noticed things taking a bit longer to load but ima blame that on my phone still getting used to the modem.) I haven't ran speedtests with ei22 yet. Ima wait a couple of days.
I expect when I come home, for 3g to be even more atrocious than it was.
Trust me bro...keep 4g on in the city. It stays connected along the entire 6 train line in the bronx and all throughout manhattan. I haven't gone to brooklyn in a while but I imagine 4g is upto par there too.
I blame the 3g problems on all of the inevitable iphone 4/s owners in the city...
I suspect its all the iphone users in nyc

As I said in my original post, I've pulled considerably better 3G speeds in other parts of the city before. For instance, in NoHo, I could consistently pull around .75Mbps. That same area now won't let me crack .3Mbps.
htc phones get better signal than sammy phones
i forgot about this phones but my epic touch uses a 5 year old antenna or something like that while the evo 3d uses a relativity new one hence better signal and speeds

I've noticed a few of the more honest Sprint reps I've spoken with have said that the HTC devices have considerably better antennae than the Epic. Supposedly the HTCs are crappier in every other respect, though. I still hold that Sprint's 3G in NYC is worse than it was a month or so ago.
Things down started slowinglast Jul IIRC. If you think Sprint 3G is bad in NYC, try Suffolk County, Long Island... unless you're next to a tower, it's often slower than thick molasses, dying snails and glaciers.
Now off Froyo EC05 and onto GB EI22 rom, the measured speeds are (drumroll!) exactly the same. As for 4g connectivity, it has dead zones in various places i.e. Upper West Side. I don't know how people manage to keep 4g on all the time and not run out of juice - extended or extra batteries?
Lol at the guy who said it was apple...

I live on deer park avenue and work on 110, if it weren't for optimum wifi, I'm pretty sure I'd have killed myself by now (that's the only positive thing you'll ever hear me say about cablevision, lol)

In my neighborhood, I can't stay connected to 4G at all. Usually, I can get on and I'm then dropped within a couple of minutes. If I'm driving around Manhattan, I can stay on 4G for a chunk of the time, but usually get dropped in a few places. 4G is nice when it works: the speeds typically range anywhere from 5Mbps to 8Mbps in the areas of Manhattan I've used it. That being said, it's tendency to just drift in and out make it pretty hard to deal with. There are also a few total Sprint dead zones in areas where dead zones should exist - for example, around 34th and Park, there's almost zero coverage.
sitting by a window on 110th and Broadway, ran the speed test app 3 times to check 3G speeds:
Ping 286 - Download 0.12 Mbps - Upload 0.29 Mbps
Ping 362 - Download 0.01 Mbps - Upload 0.23 Mbps
Ping 356 - Download 0.03 Mbps - Upload 0.27 Mbps
remind me why I'm paying for this
I have been seeing some pretty crappy speeds myself (not in New York though).
Nothing nearly as slow as what I had been seeing for awhile. You should also take into consideration that Sprint has been rolling out the GB update OTA so that could be what's causing the abysmal speeds lately?
I noticed a huge difference in 3G today. Could be because the majority of the people got the update? Just a thought. But speeds are blazing fast for me on 3G today and it hasn't been since GB rolled out.
