Epic 2 [Galaxy S II] - Epic 4G General

Galaxy S II details released. Can we reasonably expect an Epic 2 on Sprint? I always wondered why the Epic 4G for Sprint was the only Galaxy S model with a physical keyboard.

I doubt that Sprint's version of the GS2 will have a physical keyboard like our Epics.

Why?
That is what I am worried about. Since GS2 will have a screen expanded to 4.3-inches, they might opt to do away with the physical keyboard for aesthetics/size reasons.

I'm sure as well it will see Froyo but only because it'll be released with it, what you will be waiting for--is Gingerbread but only after 8 months of waiting and 3 more newer releases from Google. And Honeycomb for the S2, forgetaboutit!

Regardless of form factor, my question still remains, though: when's Sprint likely to get a replacement for the Epic (or the Evo, for that matter)? I haven't really followed Sprint in this regard, but if I'm not mistaken haven't they usually announced around March and started shipping around June? Are they likely to break that pattern?
I have until 2/11 to return the Epic I'm using. I have this sinking suspicion I'll be rolling the dice on that day in trying to decide whether to keep it and take the chance that a new superphone will ship in March, or return it and take the chance that one won't ship until June. Neither is a good scenario...

No thanks! I'm not in the market for another Samsung disposable Android phone.

Ironic isn't it?

this really makes me sick... They are gonna come out with galaxy s2 series now cause the epic and the other galaxys were such a failure. Its like oh sorry bout your sh!tty phone so here just give us some more of your hard earned money and we will give you something that works. What a rip off. I dont care how bad a$$ these new phones will be! i will not get another samsh!t again.
They will prob update the epic to froyo eventually and then that will be it.
Left by the wayside never to be updated again. Im sure that will happen...

While I do share your anger, the Galaxy S phones were far from a failure. Samsung sold over 10 million Galaxies worldwide. 4 million in the US alone.

Hahaha that's awesome good work! Plus I think you just made him even more angry which makes me laugh even harder.
I've been lurking here for quite some time, had an epic since launch and I'm not happy with Sammy either for the whole mess, but I don't go *****ing here about it. If your pissed go ***** to Samsung and Sprint about it on facebook, twitter, their 800#, who cares as long as its not to the people in this forum. No one here can do anything about it.

The earliest time that I will consider getting a new phone is in Q4 2011. And the only reason I would upgrade - physical keyboard and 4-inch+ screen still being prerequisites - is for a better camera. Current Epic's 5MP camera is not good enough quality.

I think they're messing up by going to 4.3.....
4" is the perfect screen size :/

Maybe we should organize a boycott of the Galaxy Tab

I apologize for making another "I'm mad at Samsung for..." thread, but after trying for the past hours to get the JI5 update and failing, I'm a bit angrier than I usually am and want to hurt Samsung somewhere where they will feel it while not going to extremes like trying to organize a class action suit.
Ever since the Galaxy S line came out they really haven't done much to support it except release 3 buggy updates for three of the phones and completely ignore the one that's been out in the States for the longest (until the "made you look" event of today), yet they're so eager to show off that Galaxy Tab that they want everyone to be interested in and buy next month. I suggest simply spreading the word to everyone that no one should but that thing until they at least get their house in order and get the Galaxy S line up to the basic functionality they should have had out of the box. Spread the word that they apparently can't support the products they release and that nobody should touch those things until they can prove they are going to stand behind the products they want us to spend our hard earned money on.
Before some of you start flaming me, I do very well know this is a forum for people who mod their phones and have no intention of staying stock. I mod my phones too. Even with the fixes I've flashed I still have issues with GPS and the phone resetting. I appreciate everything the community has done to help make these phones better and I whole heartedly thank them for doing so, but at the same time there's a whole company with a division of people getting paid to do this that hasn't been able to supply us with one good fix after nearly 3 months time. It's time we should make every potential customer aware of that.
I'm boycotting the U.S. release of the Galaxy Tab, but only because I find the fact that all 4 U.S. carriers disabling the phone functions of the thing (the international version won't have this limitation) as a hugely retarded move.
I'm not interested in carrying around 2 huge slabs-o-touchscreen all the darn time. If I were I'd be an iDiot and worship Steve Jobs.
That's understandable, personally I could care less about being able to make calls on tablet. It's not like you would be able to take calls on both your cell phone and the tablet. And I sure wouldn't care for having another phone number.
I love my iPad btw!

Why would you carry it around if you can't use it as a phone?
Sent using my Vibrant with the Tapatalk app
To be honest I am not surprised they are disabling the calling feature. In fact I would be surprised if they didn't.
I mean I for one wouldn't want to stop using my vibrant to use that giant tablet.
Also no matter what it will have wifi so it can be more like a laptop on the go and playing games on it will be awesome from the looks of it.
Well if they are just disabling the feature then that means the hardware to make calls is still built in so someone could root it and make calls anyway. But I'm still not getting one cause it'll be just like my phone. Tablets are a median of a phone and a notebook but nowadays the Ipad is the best out.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Can't say I'm feeling pouty and petulant about Samsung in general, but I crossed four Tabs off my Xmas list when they announced the phone functionality was disabled.
As for the frequent comments about the Tab being too large to use as a phone, I use my phone as a speakerphone most of the time, and Bluetooth headsets put the final nail in the coffin for that argument.
I really doubt the S Tab will sell much anyway.
Smaller screen than the iPad, lower resolution, considerably worse battery life, for almost the same price....
Plus, given our experience with Samsung, it will probably not be upgraded to Gingerbread, which according to Google is the first version of Android actually meant for tablets.
Who in their right mind will buy the Tab?
What made me mad is they have more accessories slated for that thing than the very phones they already have out.
Docks, keyboards and all kinds of goodies. Oh yeah they all plug into the bottom of the Tab not the top like our retarded phones.

Exactly!
Since it's functionally crippled compared to it's European counterpart I don't plan on carrying one around.
It's an interesting device, and will probably have a modicum of success, but the deliberate lockdown of an existing feature is one that makes me uninterested in it.
Given that it's carrier unsubsidized pricing internationally is likely going to make it more expensive than the iPad, if I were to develop an interest in an Android tablet/mid that didn't support phone functions, I'd just SPEND LESS MONEY on a comparable 7" tablet that doesn't have phone functions. There are several...
Huge flaw with Samsung tablet, not sure if mentioned
At the moment pretty much every App available doesn't even support the tablets 1024x600 resolution so they will be to small for the screen or will stretch and look like crap.

No? Must be a worldwide carrier conspiracy to make Samsung look bad, by delaying fixes and OS upgrades.....
No, Samsung's track records with product support just sucks. That's why some are pissed.

Nice troll, since I don't believe you are actually as stupid as you're trying to get us to believe.
No, we're all pissed off about Samsung's crappy support. I bought a phone with a GPS built in. I can't use my GPS because it doesn't work.
A little fact which has been repeatedly explained to you. So either you choose to ignore it so you can troll more, or you have major issues with reading comprehension, take your pick.

i got a feeling t-mobile and htc aren't that serious about this phone. but since im still withing my 14 day, im gonna cancel my 2year contract, dust off my trusty g1 and go pre-paid while i wait and see how this goes. on a sidenote. i think its sad that t-mobile, who brought out the first android phone that started the whole frenzy of bringing iphone and RIM to their knees does not embrace their android devices. especially since they brought out a successor, it was just another phone to them i guess. i mean in comparison to apples iphone and att, and motorolas droid line-up and verizon, sprint and their evo. t-mobile and..... and.... wtf???

We're just messing with you. If you're really unsatisfied with the G2 and seeing how you really like the other phones with other carriers why not get an HD2? Off-contract of course through craigslist. You can put just about any build into it. They're dirt cheap, like $200. Until t-mobile releases more to your liking.

No way in anyway was the G1 junk. That phone paved the road for Android, Rooting, and everything else. I still love the G1.
G2 is by far the best phone out for android. My personal opinion is it craps on the vibrant which is its only close competitor. As far as the g1.... only reason id see you going back is if your the type of person who loves to flash roms constantly... the g2 stock is just as good as roms I've loaded. Its very tolerable to me and I usually hate stock android. But soon devs will have perm root (gl guys!) and we will be able to get our roms back all in due time. Could you imagine the g2 with custom firmware? This thing is a beast on stock froyo.... so go figure.

I still like my G1, but now my son is enjoying it with CM 6.1
I'm not sure why so many are frustrated with the G2. I'm really loving it!
To each their own. I was happy to have been part of Android since it's beginning. But Verizon really marketed the Android phone, which would save T-Mobile a lot of marketing expenses to help familiarize people with the brand. Still, T-Mobile needs more advertising for this phone and not those dumb ads aimed at Moms.
I feel insulted.
T-Mobile should have reclaimed the G2 as a successer to the orignal with better hardware (dual core, and FF camera) and features to solidify their place as the Android King, because Verizon is stealing it.
Even though I think Android will peak by the next 2 iterations, it's downhill from there. If T-Mobile doesn't make it's position known as the king of the OS, then it's going to be downhill for them.
Next iteration of phone MUST implement the dual core processsor and more features to make this a top of the line phone. I don't want a phone that runs slower (stock G2) than an already released phone like the Galaxy S.
Step it up T-Mobile, this is my warning to you if you want to stay alive after Q1 FY11. Operations over there must be changing their target audience to Moms. Not good my friend T-Mobile... not good. Unfortunately their smartphone audience that is keeping them afloat are Android lovers and devs and the ability for us to grandfather data plans.
Be the first to release the dual core processor phone, with a projector, and front facing camera. Be the first!!! Be the first to come out with something spectaculary new, and you wont need to worry about marketing as much.
Then you can let Verizon market it for you by releasing a phone of their own with similar features. Once they set their prices, with your limited budget, you will advertise your phone with those features for less money.
Then you'll be all set. Thanks T-Mo and thanks OP for letting me ramble in your thread.
I loved the G1... the hinges made it pretty awesome and unique in my opinion. The keyboard was also pretty awesome... I go through hundreds of SMS a day and it made is so comfortable.
Still getting used to the G2... I like it so far except for the lack of FFC and weak hinges but hey what can I do about that.

I really like most Android Phones but disagree the G2 is the best Android Phone. I just dropped VZW for T-Mobile. My Droid X was just as nice if not better than the G2. I picked up the HD2 but now miss Android. So I am thinking about doing the G2 or MT 4G.
In the end he has his opinion but when it comes to prepaid the 3G coverage drops to a smaller area in my area.
As for the G1 I wasn't a big fan of the phone and the G2 is a far superior look and operating phone.

I'm keeping this until a tegra3 device.
Thanks to the OP for the interesting tidbit. I think the significant news is that instead of the usual annual product cycle, it's now semi-annual.
As some said, this isn't surprising for Android tablets. At Computex '11, Asus and others are already announcing their 2nd wave of roll-outs for tabs this year.
Current owners understandably feel some angst at the prospect of being forgotten. There are two components to after-sale support. On the Goog side, the Xoom got the 3.1 update first, as it was used to develop HC and no modification was needed. I think this will hold at least to ICS. After that, it'll probably be a DIY affair, since Goog will have a new ref device for ICS.
On the Moto side, OS support is lacking, perhaps because the OS itself is a moving target. But SD-card and 4G are major items and aren't something Moto can sweep under the carpet. They'll happen, although probably later than sooner.
Though, I wouldn't count on anything else, as developing firmware for the new toys will have higher priority. It's just business. We all know this is the bleeding edge. It's a safe bet that most Xoomers here, being early adopters, will have a new squeeze when the quad-cores and ICS drop.

I thought that too.
Why would they push out another tablet for no reason before ICS?
This makes my upcoming return decision easier.
obviously they are working on a new tablet but no way will it get released this year. If it does get released this year (which it isn't) fortunately for me I bought my 3g xoom at best buy and have the buy back program they offer, as long as best buy carries it I'm good
Yep, returning mine as well. The thing that gets me/I dont understand is...arent these significant processor changes going to alter the architecture enough to render the "Beta Tabs" obsolete? Meaning...the Xoom will have had a complete life cycle of 2 months and the SamTab of -1 month. If your products have a life span into the negatives...something is wrong with your strategy. People will stop buying Android Tabs until the CoreWar companies have gone broke enough to slow down R&D. Sucks, I just got a Nexus S and Xoom thinking Id at least get software updates for ICS, but thats starting to seem like a vain premise. Im not hating/*****ing...just rap'n about the state of this tech.

Anyway, now that the dirt has been fell from the shoulder...I just purchased the Xoom 4 days ago, so I would be kind of foolish to not return and wait. I really like the size and weight and pulled the trigger knowing I'd wait on SD (32 GB is nice on internal!) but at this point there are not only newer options coming out but they are cheaper as well. My first reply was actually more of a question, "Will a dual core device run *most* of a Quad Core OS, or are they to different for the old tech to carry on?" And interesting as well...if tablets are to one day replace other mainstream forms of daily computing, wont it eventually be a broad range of hardware running one OS anyway. I mean...I dont have an Alienware, so why would I need/expect a basement price on a bleeding edge tablet, say...5 years from now?

Difference being that their products were functional when they got them. It's been months and months and months and the SD Card and 4G update are nowhere to be found. It's disgusting. At this point, I truly do not think that either update is actually coming. The fact that they're more interested in selling their next incomplete product than fixing the mess they shoveled out initially is obscene. This is my first Motorola Android product, and after this mess I think it may be the last.

Yes, truth hurts. Go cry somewhere else. The SD slot is the most pathetic argument there is. You buy something as if they actually gave you and indication of any timeline on that feature as well as they NEVER advertise anything about that. They do however advertise 4G which is a complaint but still they didn't give any exact time frame, I believe they said 2nd quarter, which hasn't ended yet

HTC EVO 4G - The People's Smartphone

This is just a random banter, but I have to say that of all smartphones I've used or tinkered with, this one to me has had the most love. I can't help but notice how all the awesome and devoted devs here on XDA are still porting and creating ROMs for this amazing phone. The EVO is what got me into Android and modifying ROMs of my own. Now that the EVO has been discontinued, let us take a moment to reflect on its majestic legacy, and see it off the way it deserves. Some key moments I remember are:
-When I saw the commercial for the EVO and it blew my mind.
-Waiting three weeks for mine to come in stock.
-When I finally bought it: August 8, 2010.
-When I learned about rooting and nervously tried it for myself.
-When I found XDA, with a whole section devoted to the EVO.
-When I tried the unlocked hotspot for the first time.
-When I accepted an OTA and lost root, not knowing what I just did.
-Waiting impatiently for 4.24 to gain root.
-Learning 4.24 had finally gained root, and leaving work early so I could root my EVO.
These are just a few moments, but there are many more. I know this post probably sounds crazy, but I know there are other people who feel this way too. If so, please feel free to share your experiences with "The People's Smartphone".
I would agree, I've had mine for over a year. Sure I want a new phone but nothing out has made me want to get rid of my evo yet.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Ahhh, to reminisce..
The EVO was my very first smartphone. I came from a LG Rumor. My EVO is still my daily driver. I got mine on Aug. 3rd 2010, just a couple months after its release. I got into the root and mod scene a few months after that.
The EVO is definately a historical device. It was the first for so many things. Most notibly for me was it was the first iPhone killer. The first real offering for iDevice haters like myself.
I have a lot of good memories with my EVO. It'll remain my current device until my contract is fullfilled. Reason being so I can carrier unlock it and continue to use it for whatever I want thereafter. Even without service it still makes a great mini tablet on wifi lol. I'll keep my EVO and use it for as long as it runs. The day it dies will be a sad day; however I still wont get rid of it lol. It'll make a snazzy paperweight! Maybe I'll make a shrine for it haha -shrugs-
I've babied my EVO so much that it still looks like it did the day it came out of the box. Not a scratch or ding on it. Still looks and performs new!

+1 to all of that. +1000 for the EVO being the 1st iPhone killer!
Wife and I decided to fire AT&T, sold both of our iphone 3s, got our Evo 4Gs and never looked back. +1 to all the comments so far. Sent a lot of data through this bad boy via 3G, Wifi and sdcard.. now have 5 Roms loaded on it at once and switch with a single reboot.. simply amazing.
It will be a sad day when they hang on our Christmas tree though.
I both mine in September 2010 , from that time I burn two of them (sprint sponsored) . This is my the third one.

You know something else I love about this phone.. even tho it's EOL and no longer in production; it is still technologically superior to 95% of the current offerings available.
Yes it has a single-core processor, and has half the RAM and ROM space available compared to many top-notch phones today. Take for instance tho the screen size and resolution, and it's 8MP camera. Most current phones can't beat it.
The EVO is aging, but it can still hold it's own. And of the EVO family of devices, it's second to only the 3D when it comes to performance and features in my opinion.
There's just so much to rave about when it comes to our beloved classic EVOs. It really set the standard for top-of-the-line smartphones, and it set that standard very high. HTC forever has a fan in me.
So what is a 10 month old EVO actually worth today? Its an 8-9 on a scale of 1-10.
I gotta give props to the OG. I had mine for almost a year and gave it to my daughter when I got my 3D. She rocks it and absolutely loves it to death. It is still beast.

My Evo
I rather enjoy my Evo as well. Only reason i'm considering upgrading is to get dual core action. There are some good dev's making roms and stuff for this phone still too. I think this phone is going to get plenty of action for a long time
absolutely the "People's Smartphone"..for a long time during the Windows Mobile days I would switch phones endlessly. The Evo is the only phone to hold my attention for so long. For me, it's not just the device. It's the community. The tweaking. The endless hours of fun on the couch just goofing around with this thing. It's a cheap hobby. Major props to all the fantastic Devs that keep this thing alive and major props to the rest of us that keep this community one of the most active on XDA.
I agree... I had the Hero and I thought that HTC couldn't build a phone, then I got the Evo. It is a stable and powerful phone still. It will be interesting to see what comes up next. They will have to top the Evo, which will be pretty sweet phone.

I wouldn't say they failed, it's just a part of business. Consumers en masse want the "next best thing" you know how it goes. So you gotta fill business contracts, get people buying the new stuff, new stuff equals new accessories, new contracts etc etc.
It's a beast of a phone and can still hang with lots of devices today, it's just gotten a little long in the tooth. I honestly think after my daughter runs through my old Evo, my son will get it. I'm sure it will still be a winner in a year or two.Natural progression my man, it is what it is.

Assuming this is a qHD screen as the article suggests, how does that stack up against the newest Samsung screens.
Thanks to the Epic, I have grown to HATE Samsung. They have shown their true colors when it comes to software updates and I want out. The Epic development community is truly awesome, but it is a shame that we have to rely on non-paid people to make this phone what it should be. That said, I find Samsung hardware to be very nice.
i dont think i could ever get a moto phone. they are the most locked down of the three major android oems. i will prolly always buy samsung just because of the completely unlocked bootloaders and because they have a utility like odin.
@austin
That phone is pretty sexy though imo. To bad it's motorola, but it's probably the photon Q.
To OP the button on the bottom seems tacky to me, I love our lit up one. And the keyboard is so spacy, ;/

I disagree with you there.
I will freely admit that the delay on FroYo was terrible and ridiculous, when FroYo was rolling out the SGSII still wasn't released, and they had already promised it to us. But Gingerbread was a courtesy. They had a new generation of smartphone running around and they only anted up due to demand. And the whole complying with what Sprint wanted. I blame them. Sprint that is. So I don't think you can rag on Samsung for that one.
And if the Epic Touch 4G is any indicator, it looks like there is one dude working on these builds. They're slow. Fact. But frankly, as long as the end user knows it's being worked on, they should be happy. Especially with the speed they already have. He's doing his best I'm sure. Poor little Samsung man.
PLUS. More room for developers to step in and make the ****ty software they're stuck with better. Case and point: Epic 4G. And without the delays I wouldn't know what I know.

If it's a slider, I would consider it if the rest of the hardware is up to par once it's released (and Sprint LTE is out & delivers). Motos are very locked down, have non-removable batteries, have worse screen res and are easy to brick during root/flash process if it goes wrong. Definitely prefer Samsung here, but with no sliders on the horizon this phone warrants some consideration. On the plus side, Moto phone batteries tend to have more up-front Mah, radios are generally better and somehow the fastboot files always seem to leak and devs are able to make root stick. Moto is also very slow to update its phones but wife's Droid 2, released later than Epic got its GB update 3 months before we did and also had good dev support in forms of CM9 and AOKP.

I agree motorola is very locked down, in the photon forums people who underwent the official motorola soak update test they got permanently locked in a new way. I am unlocked fortunately and there is a good dev community so I am happy with my photon. I hope it is an improved qHD display because mine is definitely not on par with the epic's screen. I really hope they put the S4 processor in it because that would be nice. This is probably the rumored photon q, q most likely standing for qwerty. Also makes alot of sense why the epic just went EOL. We also have a very similar utility like odin its called sbf.
When my upgrade comes in december I am all over this.

Why??? The hardware could handle it, and the phone wasn't EOL. Getting software updates on phones that aren't EOL should be a no brainer. I shouldn't have to upgrade my hardware just to get new software, UNLESS the hardware can't handle the new software. These aren't FREE phones. We pay quite a bit of money for these phones. Getting some major software releases should be part of the deal.
I think the EOL thing is semantics anyway TBH. The software always lists the minimum requirements in order to run it adequately on hardware, if the hardware can support it, these manufacturers need to be supporting their customers AFTER the sale, and not just for 6 months after the sale.

This is not my problem. I should not be two levels of software behind, because they are greedy and don't want to hire the correct number of people to maintain their hardware. Why should I be happy with wayyyyyyyyyyyy subpar customer service??? It is sad what society considers "acceptable" from companies these days (customer service out of India is the first thing that comes to mind).
I am not looking for new versions of software the day that Google releases them, but if they can run on our hardware, I expect them in relatively short order.

I have been burned by Samsung TWO OUT OF TWO times now. Once on our Epic, and the other on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is STILL running Honeycomb. My complaints about Samsung stem further than just our phone.
The only reason why the Epic wasn't on the EOL list, was because it was the only high-end qwerty phone. Since Moto is making a high-end qwerty phone with ICs for sprint the Epic can r.i.p.
