Well first this requires a 'top tier' definition. Tier 1 would be the absolute best with your own cut-off point. Tier 2 and 3...so on. I assume the iphone4g belongs in the top tier.
List your first 1-3 tiers, and where would you place the Vibrant? I'm still learning more about various phones, but I'd throw a bone out there and say it belongs in tier2 or tier3.
Found this nifty site giving a review of the top10 phones. Here they list Vibrant as 10.
http://cell-phones.toptenreviews.com/smartphones/
The Galaxy Class phone (Vibrant) is a tier 1 phone
we talking what generation of phones.
as far as iphone hardware its a top teir phone that will see be outdated by the release of the atrix.
as far as what is out now Id have to say
The desire hd
sgs
evo/droid x
window phone 7
Hd7
samsung focus
I only brought up window because the op brought up the iphone
1. international galaxy s
2. samsung vibrant or nexus s
3. epic 4g
4. desire hd
i didnt realize there was a difference between international galaxy S and vibrant? also surprised that iphone isnt ranked near the top of current phones (as the public perceives it to be)
there is no difference besides support they get :
The iphone doesnt get respect because its a phone for people who need rules! most of us have android phones for a reason.
Is it really that big of a suprise
nexus would be 1st if it had external sd card until that its as usles as iphony
i got a vibrant cause tmo told me its the best fastest thing out ;pand i need it a phone

by all means i hate iphone its just too easy for me to operate ,
hardware wise
numer one phone would be VIBRANT because it has external sd i bet we could play ps3 games if the drivers were updated for our gpus
nexus s as its the fastest but no sd ...no thanks
iphone just because its white and cool
but
I would rank the I9000 in front of the Vibrant (better support + the FCC)
def vibrant is top notch when it comes to hardware it runnning, not so for plastic parts is made out off so i would give it 85 out of 100 that makes it number ........ on the list
iphone is number 1, its a fact, you can't deny it. even if ur in love with android and wanna marry it. iphone has maintained its #1 because iOS is organized, much more than android. It sticked with 1 carrier till it got so popular everyone wanted it, now when switching to the 2nd best carrier (verizon) they will get even more sales. Galaxy S DOES come up in the top 5, but is NOT 1 nor 2.
As far a popularity...
1 iphone
2 droid's x, pro etc.
3 evo
4 MAYBE galaxy s

Anyone else think that the Nexus S is kind of a disappointment?
There's nothing revolutionary or really exciting about it. It's specs sound like it's just another Galaxy S device. No dual core, no HSDPA+, nada.
Now, to be clear, I'm talking just about the device itself. Not Gingerbread. Gingerbread looks hot. Curious to hear what you folks think about the device.
No sd card slot but has a 16 gig storage. I guessing Google corrected the available memory issue with 2. 3
I think it to early to draw up any conclusions with what we have on hand.

It's a Samsung which for me, after my experience with the Vibrant, equals 'never again'.
If anything I do hope that the Nexus S, by extension, will provide some much needed relief to those who are sticking it out with their Vibrants, etc.
Just my take, I'm not a phone buff or geek, I just want my device to work properly, which is why I switched to the G2.
I've had a vibrant. Felt too cheap to me. Sad part it wasn't cheap. Paid 500 for it. The lack of support and gps issue is what turned me away. It was a nice phone. Just not my style. As I'm sure just by looking at the nexsus s, they will have the same issues. But I could be wrong. Maybe google will put a flame under samsungs butt and make them correct their errors in a fast manner.

That simple little statement is what made me turn my head. I love Google, and I think them working to make a phone with a company means it will be a good phone. I believe Samsung will get more respect from this phone, but Samsung's plastic has always stood out and this phone looks like it has just as much as any other Samsung phone. It has decent specs, nothing groundbreaking by any means, but just as nice as any other smart phone out now.
Remind me, wasn't the N1 the first phone to have a 1GHz processor? At least one of the first? I figured Google's second phone would be VERY top of the line instead of average.

Yeeeep. It was the very first. Big reason I dumped my Droid for the Nexus One way back when. That and I didn't like Verizon's service.
That's part of the reason I was so disappointed with the specs on the Nexus S. Nothing revolutionary again. Just another Galaxy S.
If I were holding out for the Nexus S, then yes, I would be disappointed. But I wasn't since I'm still in love with my G2. Can't believe Google would let this thing go to T-Mobile USA with those specs. Not dual core, no HSPA+, less ram than the MyTouch, less screen than the HD7, no hdmi out, not even a kickstand? Can a brother get a kickstand? And this is supposed to be the flagship Android phone? Ha, it won't even be the best phone at T-Mobile.

Indeed. Great show. Kids these days don't know what they're missing.
long story short, its a disappointment.
TBH, the only thing I am actually DISAPOINTED with is the lack of an Orion processor... rumor had it that it was delayed because of that issue! What is gonna happen is in 2 months all the tegra 2 devices are gonna start showing up and your "Flagship" device is already sub-par/obsolete

just in time for a Nexus 2 ...
new **** happens. there's money to be made beforehand.
Sooo disappointed
First of all, I love my N1 and sorry for the long post but i have to vent.
I bought a Nexus One in February when it came for T-mobile only and then gave it away to my brother in law who had T-Mobile when the AT&T N1 came out and bought that. My contract with AT&T has been up for a couple of months now and i was really hoping for a device (from google) that would be better than the N1 (for future proofing for at least 6 months).
Well this device is better than the N1 but not enough to ditch the N1 and get this. Here are the reasons:
Biggest disappointment: Only a 5 MP camera still? Come on Google? The EVO has an 8MP camera and has been out for months. I know phone cameras really aren't meant to replace traditional digital cameras but my sisters EVO takes pictures that are great (in the correct light) and if i had that i wouldn't even buy a new digital camera.
Second biggest disappointment: Not CDMA. I want to switch to sprint or verizon. If Google/ Samsung comes out with a CDMA version i might overlook the other disappointments and ditch the N1.
Now other reasons why Nexus S is not really that much better than the N1 to warrant another $529.
Processor: I don't know too much about the speed difference in the processors but i'm assuming they will roughly perform the same. However, i think within next couple of months new Android / Non-Android phones will come out with better processors and this will be outdated. I must add though, i haven't really seen any lag on the 1 ghz.
Video: I'm guessing the Nexus S will record 720p video, but so does my N1 (with cyanogen) and so does the EVO and many many other devices. 1080 would have been the next step and another reason i might have upgraded. Not on my top priority list though.
I don't really care that much about that NFC thing. I am curious to try it, but not enough to shell out $529 (i don't want contracts). Once more vendors support this it will become more important but not at this point.
Nexus S will probably be better for 3D gaming as the GPU on N1 supposedly sucks. I'm assuming the gingerbread advantage for 3d gaming will also be applicable to N1 but Nexus S will probably have a better GPU. I don't care about this too much because i don't play much 3d games on phones anyway but other people might weigh this more.
Yes to me its a Flopfor the the simple fact its just a google version of Galaxy S. BUT then again, after my experiance with my behold II, i will NEVER buy a samsung phone again, thats just me though... Besides my G2 is great been a while since i had a phone i was happy with.

Agreed. I'll be sticking with my overclocked G2 until we see 1.5ghz Dual Core chips with all of the bells and whistles these companies are cooking up.
CDMA blows
I just got a new contract with Sprint yesterday before the all smart phones became a extra $10 a month, so we got the intercept to save 20 a month.
That being said I was really wanted the Evo Shifts and could go back and get them.
I like the fact that I'm saving $240 a year for me and my wife.
So people sell me on why i should get the Shift and spend the extra $20 a month compared to the Intercept...
Well it depends on what you want. I'm rather biased when it comes to samsung devices since I've had a bad experience using them, the development support isn't very large for most phones(The epic is still on 2.1 iirc). The hardware isn't very good on the intercept compared to the shift. I think the intercept has the same processor as the moment clocked @ 800Mhz, which is overclocked stock although it's architecture is different than the shift, the shift is bound to run MUCH MUCH faster than the intercept.
Xda/Htc phones are known for their active development and the ability to recieve updates at a reasonable time.
I'm pretty sure the shift will beat down the intercept in every way shape, and form.
If you just want to make calls, then go with the intercept and don't get a powerful great device like the shift. If you want to(which I'm sure you do since you're on xda in the first place) get one of the best phone experiences with some of the finest dev teams around, go with the shift.
Opinions out of the way.
1. Processors
The intercept uses an arm11 v6 800MHz stock overclocked processor(Samsung shipped the S3C6410 out as 667MHz but sprint overclocked it, likely to compete with the hero), so overclocking it more will make it buggy.
The shift uses a "Qualcomm MSM7630, 800 MHz, Sequans SQN 1210 (for WiMAX)" processor. I don't know much about the actual technical details of this processor but I do know that it is of a different architecture and is a second generation snapdragon processor. It is very fast. It is the same processor as the one in the G2 and the G2 can currently be overclocked to 1.9GHz.
2. Screens
The evo shift is sporting a capacitive 3.6Inch display(Nothing fancy about the display, as in AMOLED/OLED/HD, none of that) and supports multi-touch. Resolution 480x800, so it's going to look very crisp with the same resolution as the evo on a smaller display.
The samsung intercept is using a similar display, I don't think it has anything fancy looking through some specs(I own a similar device but the samsung moment has an AMOLED display, I don't know if the intercept has this too). It is 3.2Inches in size, and stuffed with a 240 x 400 resolution. Specs say it supports multi-touch.
3. Cameras
The shift has a 5MP back facing camera and can shoot at [email protected](Specs reportedly)
The intercept has a 3.2MP back facing camera. Unsure on the video capture resolution/speed.
4. Dev support
Same as my opinion above, the shift will get development for a year or two at LEAST, I think the intercept will die down within the year.
5. RAM
Intercept has 256MB of ram.(Both phones 'free' command reports lower though)
Shift has 512MB of ram.
6. Benchmarks.
Quadrant:
Shift - 1429(Reports of stock hitting just under 1600)
Intercept - ?(My moment only ever hit ~600 when running cm6 alpha with ext2, normally with root/custom rom/kernel/ect. hits around 300(4XX with ext2))
SmartbenchProductivity/games respectively)
Shift - 832/1240
Intercept - ?(My moment never finished it)
Linpack:
Shift - 33-34
Intercept - ?(My moment hits ~9.2 once rooted/jit/custom rom)
The Samsung Intercept is a POS. Seriously. I work for a Sprint Corporate store and we have nothing but problems with them, and Samsung Moments. Save yourself the hassel..
powered by the tears of a million orphaned alpacas...
Go on Sprint's site and read the user reviews of both phones. If that doesn't clarify things then I don't know what will.
If you want to stay with an inexpensive smartphone, the optimus s is getting good reviews.
Getting the Intercept over the Shift might have been the worst decision ever.

I agree - If you want a *cheap* Android phone, the Optimus S is the way to go. I've never really been a fan of LG phones, but this one beats anything that Samsung can come up with. Myself, like the OP, have had nothing but bad experiences with Samsung smartphones. They make good TVs, Monitors, and BluRay players, but thats as far as I'm prepared to go with Samsung. I will NEVER follow them into the smartphone market again. I dont care how good the reviews are for a Samsung phone, after the Samsung Moment, I'll never trust them again. Thats just me though!!
HTC on the other hand . . . These guys know how to make a phone. I can really only speak to the EVO, Droid Incredible, and Hero. IMHO they are making the absolute best Android phones out there. (Maybe aside from the Nexus phones, but I've never owned one.)
Now that the Shift has permroot - My wife will be throwing her Moment out the window at 70MPH. I cant wait to see that!!
The Intercept is just a Moment, right? If so, I recommend staying far, far away.

This would have been my suggestion. Or if you absolutely need a physical keyboard and don't want the $10/month surcharge, the Transform (which is down to $79 at Best Buy).
The Transform is a good phone, for a Samsung. I bought it for my step-son and he has yet to have any issues with it, and rather likes it.
As a Moment owner I'm biased. Don't get a Samsung.

just phone wise definitely nexus S.
however it doesnt have a sd card slot and the screen is abit smaller.
also consider the carrier and if you would prefer that over sprint.
I would wait till they announce the Nexus S on Sprint and make sure the specs are the same. I would assume they are with the exception of adding a CDMA radio with wimax.
Definitely Nexus S.

I just got mine a couple months ago and I don't real think its showing it age. I have had all the Verizon big ones like the X and the Inc and I know that they are also not the newest phones but there is always something that will be a bit better and faster. The biggest thing that I like is that Sprint is truly unlimited. Im almost up to 9 gigs with 4 days left in my cycle. I need unlimited because I had to get rid of my home internet due to lack of work in my business right now. The Nexus S is a nice phone but really..no sd card?...and I had the Fascinate with verizon and I had to depend on devs for gps fixes and usable roms but I know the S is a google phone so it shouldn't indure the lack of Samsung updates. Its all of what you like and which service does well for you in your area also.
Oh lord not another one of these threads :rolls eyes: lol
If nexus s doesn't have an sdcard slot(hopefully it does) how is it even a competitor with other smart phones out there. I'd pick my evo all day because of the huge ass screen and its an HTC. Evo 3D sounds like a winner(based on rumors).

16GB of internal storage is a lot. If you need more that's fine, but 16 GB should satisfy a ton of people.
Edit: Things better on the Nexus S.
GPU: PowerVR SGX 540 can compete with the Tegra 2, EVO's Adreno 200 barely beats the original 2009 Droid's PowerVR 530.
Cameras: Samsung makes good mobile cameras, HTC includes terrible ones.
Display: SAMOLED > Lousy TFT
Internal Storage: EVO has a microSD slot but has very limited internal storage. Nexus S is capped at 16GB but has way more internal storage for Apps and 16GB is not bad at all.
NFC: I'm sure this will come in handy, will it this year? Maybe not but it's good to have one.
Gyroscope: Better gaming, especially FPS'.
Software: This is tough but you can knock a Google supported phone. Come Ice Cream time, you'll be watching Nexus S users playing with a fully working, HW accelerated OS.
It's just a really tough decision for me bc I'm thinking about getting the Nexus and giving the Evo to my girl. Don't get me wrong I love my Evo, I'm just ready for something new!

Like i said..there will always be a better phone than what you have but sometimes the network and carrier matter also..If I go 10 miles away from my house with T-Mobile I go to Edge....not on Sprint. In the end it really doesnt matter to me what people decide on..I have to use whats best for me and so does everyone else. If price matters though I'm sure you have seen if your a Bestbuy rewards zone member you can get the S for $99 on a 2 year agreement with the coupon...not a bad deal.

I read through some of the guides and its a lot of stuff that im not too sure I know how to do. It also says that you have to re do clockwork every time you want to flash a ROM...
If the Nexus S hits Sprint, you better believe I'll be selling my EVO to buy one.
1. The earlier you sell your EVO, the more you can get for it.
2. Nexus S will sell for a lot more than the EVO by the time HTC has a dual-core badboy on the market.
You see what I did there?
I'd say Evo, but that's because I've had nothing less than perfectness from my own Evo. However, the Evo 3D was announced/leaked, so I'd wait on that, because truthfully that sounds loads better than the OG Evo. But, anyways, the Nexus S is also (I'd imagine) going to be one of the phones at the top of the list for updates since, as the adds say, it is "pure Google." and they love to roll out updates, whereas the Evo is moving down the ranks with all the new phones announced at MWC and the like. Also the Evo is a beast of a phone, much larger than the Nexus S. It's really hard to define a clear cut answer, just do research and pick the phone that provides what YOU want from it.

Really? Its a Nexus phone... While I personally dont love the Samsung construction of mine, there is something to be said of Nexus.
Part of that is the hack-ability, fastboot oem unlock. Same as N1. Literally two adb commands to root a NexusS, and recovery works just fine. Although I gotta say I miss AmonRa when using my Nexus, I just cant get used to Clockwork...
Both phones rock. NS is far beyond Evo internal wise, but I like the feel and look of my Evo far more. Only knock I have against the Evo (since buying a seidio3500, and having it last 48hours+) is the QSD8650 and Adreno200. Been available since the Eee pc in 2009....Not exactly new tech, and holy poop does my NS do 3d games like a different class of phones compared to my Evo. But then I go to HDMI the ***** to the TV for some N64oid+wiimote and....o yeah...
Edit: Forgot to mention, I think I'm gonna craigslist my NS for something dual core, if that says anything.
^^^^ see that's what I don't understand is the adb commands. How do I open the command prompts?

So, I was dead set on the evo 3d, but then I have been reading about the samsung galaxy s II which is rumored to come out in a month.
It looks faster than the 3d, and more importantly lighter (4 oz to 6 oz) and thinner (.33 in to .49 inch)...
Faster, Thinner, Lighter seem good, but i'm sure it will not see the amount of dev activity that the 3d will have. But will we need as much dev activity if it is "so fast?"... I'm sure things will change.
Am I missing something? I'm leaning towards the Samsung Within let me know if if I am making a serious error here.
Frankly, I am surprised about the lack of discussion about the samsung around here.

Obviously things change over time, but I was so disgusted with my Samsung Instinct and how it was represented when I bought it, that I'd never even consider buying another Samsung phone. If I don't end up with a Evo 3D in the near future it will be a different HTC phone instead.
samsung has a horrible track record of updating there phones l will always stick with htc plus you cant beet htc build quality.
Samsung has been discussed around here. Just doesn't have a good track record with the community.
Android Police is reporting the Epic 2 coming out soon, not sure if its GS 1 or 2, prob 1 cause its single core 1.2 GHz. GS2 could still be a ways out cause of Apple's "look and feel of iphone" lawsuit.

GS2 Is out in Korea and Europe. Apple sued Samsung in Korea http://nexus404.com/Blog/2011/06/26...s-did-samsung-copy-apples-iphone-ipad-design/
The lawsuit won't hold the release back.
I'd never own another samsuck phone.. Both of the ones I had , got exchanged for something else because of thier poor performance. last one was an instinct, exchanged for the hero..

I can't get another android due to work... have a sprint curve 9330
But I do remember getting the instinct, throwing it against the wall and getting a Hero in the local classifieds(being used by my sister).
I've had the hero for a year and a half and I can easily say it has worked perfectly.
While I replaced the instinct 3 times before throwing the last one against the wall.
Now....We all see the galaxy S2. Do y'all think we're going to see a new epic4g 2 in all its splender? Put down the Hardware specs you will like on the new device...

Seriously? There weren't already enough threads about this?
Besides the hardware will be the same as the Galaxy S 2.

Samsung might not know much about customer relations, but they aren't idiots. The Moment replacement will be single core 2nd gen snapdragon and the Epic replacement will be Exynos
I know GSII will be dual core for Sprint, but according to Thisismynext, Epic successor w/ keyboard will have 1.2 ghz single-core, kinda like the Infuse. WDM (whosdaman and sprint employee) said so too.

I've heard about those rumors, but they sound a bit ridiculous to me for a couple of reasons:
1. There is no benefit to releasing anything under the "Epic" name, it didn't sell that well, doesn't have name recognition and definitely is known for being super late to he updated.
2. Even if they were to release a single core phone from Samsung, the "Moment 3" or whatever they call it will already have filled the niche market of low-mid range tiered keyboard phones, there is no reason to have multiple competing phone with no real difference.

I never understood why it didn't sell well. It's the only Galaxy S phone in the American market to come out complete with FFC, camera flash, and a keyboard+ 4G as an added bonus over the i9000.
Out of the American models, we're the only ones that get to enjoy google talk with video chat.

No marketing, lack of interest in a phone for 249.99 when the Evo was hyped to the max and selling for 199.99 and had accessories.
The D600 (aka Conquer) is coming soon as a replacement for the Transform, meaning it's a low (mid) end 4G slider with a full keyboard, but a 1ghz processor and a low(ish) res screen.
The Within is going to be the dual core high-end slim slab phone to compete with the E3D and Photon.
There's not really any room in between for anything that would replace the epic to be considered the EPIC 2, unless they want to have another GSII but with a keyboard, there's no reason Sprint/Samsung would make it.
If we get something replacing the EPIC, it would need to be something thinner, lighter, with a decent battery, better resolution display, and a faster processor for it to be considered a sequel, and would likely be released a while after the within (otherwise we would have seen some specs about it already.)
Also, consider that sprint doesn't usually use sequel naming, so rather than Epic 2, it would be called something different anyway. (There have been exceptions with LG, but samsung is not known for it.)
Also long as we get an sgs2 than I'm good...but if we do get a epic 2 than I want.......1.5 ghz dual core....1gb of ram....hdmi out....4-4.5" screen....android 4.0...3D cameras.... and ASOP

My idea for epic 2 would be 4.2 inch super amoled plus 8 megapixel camera back & 2 megapixel in front a 1.3 dual core processer a 5 row slide out keybord that slides up at an angle so you could watch movie or get online slide up as in it would look like a mini laptop also I would take out smiley button & put one of those little blackberry scrolling balls on right side so when your using the keyboard with the screen slanted at angle you can use that scrolling ball like a mouse! That would be the the best phone out hands down tel me not matter in fact im about to write a letter to ceo of sprint & samsung with my idea & tell them you don't have to pay me for my idea but just give me the phone a month before anyone get it!

Sprint says, the Epic 4g & EVO phones will be phased out, no longer available starting Oct-2011.
