samsung within (SGS2) or Evo 3d? - Hero CDMA General

So, I was dead set on the evo 3d, but then I have been reading about the samsung galaxy s II which is rumored to come out in a month.
It looks faster than the 3d, and more importantly lighter (4 oz to 6 oz) and thinner (.33 in to .49 inch)...
Faster, Thinner, Lighter seem good, but i'm sure it will not see the amount of dev activity that the 3d will have. But will we need as much dev activity if it is "so fast?"... I'm sure things will change.
Am I missing something? I'm leaning towards the Samsung Within let me know if if I am making a serious error here.
Frankly, I am surprised about the lack of discussion about the samsung around here.

Obviously things change over time, but I was so disgusted with my Samsung Instinct and how it was represented when I bought it, that I'd never even consider buying another Samsung phone. If I don't end up with a Evo 3D in the near future it will be a different HTC phone instead.

samsung has a horrible track record of updating there phones l will always stick with htc plus you cant beet htc build quality.

Samsung has been discussed around here. Just doesn't have a good track record with the community.

Android Police is reporting the Epic 2 coming out soon, not sure if its GS 1 or 2, prob 1 cause its single core 1.2 GHz. GS2 could still be a ways out cause of Apple's "look and feel of iphone" lawsuit.

I can't get another android due to work... have a sprint curve 9330
But I do remember getting the instinct, throwing it against the wall and getting a Hero in the local classifieds(being used by my sister).
I've had the hero for a year and a half and I can easily say it has worked perfectly.
While I replaced the instinct 3 times before throwing the last one against the wall.

Galaxy S will be here in July. Buyer's remorse anyone?

Just heard from an EXTREMELY reliable source in TMO that the Galaxy S will be announced on June 19 and will be available sometime in July. I love my Slide but it's hard for me to pass up a package like the Galaxy S. My biggest concern is that it's a Samsung. My next concern is that the rooting effort for the Slide could potentially loose a great deal of steam when the Galaxy S is released.
While I haven't taken any of the Samsung Android devices seriously in the past, the Galaxy S specs are pretty impressive. I am absolutely satisfied with my MT3G Slide and with HTC. Currently I am still in my buyer's remorse period and have the option of returning the Slide. The purpose of the thread is just to help me not do something stupid like getting a Samsung Android device. My heart likes the idea of that beautifully big and bright AMOLED screen, 16gb of internal memory, 8mp camera and 1ghz CPU. My brain says "STICK WITH HTC".
What do you guys think?
UPDATE: both my wife and my MT3G Slides have light leaks in the plastic housing surrounding the touch screen (in the seam) . Dust has already gotten in under my screen. We are returning both devices as I refuse to handle this issue under warranty. It has been a nice run and I am extremely disappointed that I have to give this device back but the initial manufacturing run is defective. Hopefully they address the issue so I can buy one with confidence.

na im still happy with my slide if the galaxy s was already out and i had to chose between the 2 it would still be the MyTouch slide hopefully root does come to the slide tho i know wesgarner and a few other devs are working on it
it's a difficult time to make decisions on a phone; Samsung up to this point has had a horrible record for updating their phones, copping out on a promise to upgrade the behold 2 to 2.0 and being incredibly slow on updating the moment; what good is it when the manufacturer won't update/release drivers compatible with the latest base code? The only thing that makes me feel good about the galaxy's future (despite being a top notch phone at its release spec wise) is that samsung is doing a massive release on it, which should increase their investment in the phone's support in a logical world.
The Mytouch slide, despite its midrange specs has performed well for me although its radio is far inferior to my old g1 on 3g reception and developer support for achieving root is minimal atm.
I read bad things about Samsung leaving the behold owners out to dry. Plus I prefer the option to use a physical keypad (especially when typing in passwords) and the galaxy S doesn't have a flash for the camera which is sort of a deal breaker for me.
but anyway I actually got my Slide for free because they made an "exception" for me . So I'm eligible for a full discount at the beginning of 2011 and we'll see what the next cool thing is then.
Was just out rolling around town running the MT3G Slide through the car stereo ... this phone is just luscious. I think I'm going to stick with HTC on this one rather than getting stuck with Samsung . The Slide is the perfect size and so far I have had no problems at all. I guess I'll just have to continue meditating on it but I'm leaning towards keeping it. I appreciate your continued thoughts on the issue as we take our new Slides through their steps.
Android that isn't HTC is a hard sell for me. Even the EVO and Driod are hard sells because Motorola makes crap products. Samsung phones are pretty terrible and the support they offer is just as terrible.
HTC for me
SAMSUCKS no thank you I was one of those that got burnt with the behold2
I'm well aware of the of samsung's flagship coming to tmo next month but no regrets for me cause I got this phone so I can bear waiting to see tmo's lineup at the end of the year. Lol This phone is TRULY awesome btw.

im sorry but has samsung ever had and good devs i have been down the road of motorola and i have to say it left me wanting . i have had htc phones before and loved them *cough cough dash* but even that was a good phone i say mt slides the way to go and screw any other company
Go Android Mofia
This thread really baked my noodle. I was planning to get a MT3G Slide at the end of the month... now I'm second guessing. I could give a rats ass about the keyboard on the slide, I just want it because its currently T-Mo's best android phone and my G1 needs an upgrade. One factor is cost... I am currently at the 18-month mark for my contract, so phones are a little more expensive for me. MT3G Slide is $270 for me. Steep, but I get to break it up over 4 months bills, so I can deal with it. I'm afraid this phone out of the gate will be costly, more so that I am willing to spend on a new phone. The other factor is development. My magic ball says the Slide will have pretty good dev support once it gets rooted. I fear the galaxy will end up on the back burner and not really have good dev support. I've not seen much dev support for non-HTC devices.
So, Slide has the benefit of being HTC, better UI, better dev support (I assume).
Galaxy will be faster, sleeker (would rather not have a keyboard), but I run the risk of having no software support for my expensive new hardware.
What to do?
Um, unless I'm missing something, the Galaxy doesn't have a physical keyboard, right? That will probably not make me feel bad for getting the Slide.
Edit: Removed Samsung bashing...
The Galaxy S is the only considerable Android device from Samsung in my opinion. I find it hard to believe that anyone purchased the "Behold2" as it was never even a remote consideration for me. I think the Galaxy S will be handled much differently, dev wise, than the crap fest that the "Behold2" very obviously was. I've pretty much decided to keep the Slide because it is very nearly perfect. Thanks again for the constructive discussion; this is why I rely on XDA. Friends don't let friends buy Samsung

Thats funny, and I'm sure it will follow the behold II foot steps. have a lot of hype before release. Then once its released like 2 people will buy it and 1 person will take it back and the other does a terrible review of it.

Just putting it out there... The EVO is HTC
Could Samsung be that dumb?
Dont get me wrong when it comes to mid/high range cells samsung fails miserably... Ive been working for The Mob (T-mobile) for 2 years and samsung has not impressed me at all... Now the Behold, memoir, and highlight are all the same crap phones that look different but are the same... When the behold 2 was released with android I was excitied then I saw how simular it was to the rest crap that samsung is. some new phones from samsung I noticed like the gravity-t has an android feel to it... a must *see* if you like phones in general... I was impressed for the first time by samsung... So thier mid level phones are getting pretty techy!
dang what im saying is Samsung cannot be that stupid to make the same mistake twice. The galaxy was in the works for about a year now, then pushed back. A lot of work is being put into this phone, not to mention the tablet version as well. Ive noticed a boost in Samsungs ability to make a high end "super" phone.
I think I will wait till I see the demo in store before I buy. But ladies and gents lets not for get Q4 is when new phones come out for the holiday. Dont be hasty, wait till then... the 1ghz processor is getting old as far as tech is concerned. but I doubt carriers will go beyond for at least a year. but maybe another NEXUS type with super-duper specs! lol

Yea I re-read this today and saw that error lol. What I meant about the evo is that out of all the stuff I have read about it versus the N1 is that the N1 is fundamentally better . Sorry for the confusion and thanks for catching that lol.
As absolutely *****in as the Galaxy S looks, I just don't think I could do it. Samsung has burned too many bridges as far as I'm concerned, and they've made too many mistakes. I don't know that I could ever see Samsung as an equal to HTC when it came to a superphone. I know they've all got their problems, but I'll go with what I know and love for right now, and stick with the Slide.
Samsung sucks
As nice as the Galaxy looks, it lacks a keyboard, and its from Samsung..two deal breakers from me. I love my slide, its quick, it has a keyboard, and it handles high end games.
Why go to a samsung over a HTC? Everyone knows what happens with samsung phones. What's the main advantages over the slide? I feel there is none. The screen is better of coarse but who really complains about the mytouch slide's screen? It has a 1ghz processor but it has TouchWiz on it. If i recall Touchwiz killed the behold 2, and the slide only has 600mhz but it's so fast and I NEVER had an encounter with it being even close to slow. Mytouch slide will have everyone supporting it just like the g1, while the galaxy s won't even have close to that support.
I just don't seem whats the hype is all about. Am I missing something?

Anyone thinking of getting Epic 4G

Now that we know the Epic 4G is officially coming to sprint is anyone returning their evos?
Personally i think:
Epic 4G wins in:
graphics processing
CPU processing
Display (even though evos in bigger)
Evo 4G wins in:
Developers/XDA community (biggy for me)
Phone look (its just sexyyy)
High Res cam in front and back
Sense (even though i prefer vanilla)
Epic 4G loses in:
****ty Samsung Android "skin" w.e its called
SAMSUNG!!
No Devs.....
Evo 4G Loses in:
30 FPS - although a fix has been made thanks to our devs
There were more issues at launch but all of been fixed minus the screen separation which HTC is "looking into"......
So what do you guys say?

about the samsung touchwiz crap... think about it... all it is is a skin over vanilla...??? freaking 1/2 the people here are always crying about how much sense sucks anyway... so why not...
i have been reading how its being knocked about not having all the "social" crap of sense... obviously the person writing that has not looked at the market for a long long while... or forgot that this isnt an iphone...
Epic will be as good as the EVO if not better simply because of the hummingbird processor...

I switched from T-Mobile for the Evo, I have -no idea- how their upgrade system works. Do you think I'll be able to upgrade, given I -just- started my contract with them?
Me and another guy went to return our EVO's today, in light of the EPIC, well, the fact we went in yesterday for the same ****, but my buddy running the store told me yesterday they have no info at all on release date..
He got some info from Sprint today, release date is "black friday" the last friday before thanks giving...
Hell of a long time to wait, regardless if I could of returned my EVO, put my sprint service on a **** phone, and kept my 2 year upgrade/new contract eligability available until the EPIC comes out...
5 months? To hell with that. Ill probally be able to sell my EVO in a little bit shy of 100$ of what the epic will cost me in full. so to hell with it, We kept our EVOs.
I hate sense. I cant stand the 30FPS cap, I never use the HDMI the way i thought it would be implemented, and that extra $10 fee for .. well, nothing is kind of starting to bother me the more I think about it.
In the end, evo still crushes my other friends iphone4, even though their so ****ing stupid and wont accept anything besides there own opinion, and just tried to laugh at the evo apparently. i-d-i-o-t-s.
..still most of me likes the nexus more but tmobile just sucks in my area.
you will not have to wait till the black friday... by that time (end of summer / fall) we will be playing with nVidia Tegra powered phones running in the neighborhood of 1.2ghz to 1.5ghz natively ... that can push 1080p with a breeze and have better battery life than snapdragon powered devices ... unfortunately 1st run of nVidia Tegra powered phones will be windows 7 instead of android ...
looks like a childs toy, untill they make a proper phone with keyboard that doesn't look like it comes from fisher price I say nay to thee!

damn...black friday..that is too long to wait
Black Friday is the day AFTER Thanksgiving what would put it at November 26th.
"The EVO 4G, while having an impressive set of specifications, still runs a 65 nm chip that is less power efficient and pales in terms of graphics performance when compared to the Galaxy S." http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=17125 good read comparing the processors, Super AMOLED is way better, colors, battery, everything, and the hummingbird has a superior GPU and is only a 45nm compared to our 65nm. HTC has always been about numbers, get the 1GHz processor, 8MP camera, 4.3" screen, but not always the best quality of them. the Epic may be better in some respects.
I wouldn't give my EVO for an EPIC right now though, xda, quality and reliability of HTC hardware, and sense (menus and contacts, not widgets) are just to good to pass up. Also, I don't really like any hardware keyboard after the TP2, samsungs is still not on the same level. samsungs sometimes feel cheap, HTC's feel and look like higher quality devices.
Its Apples and Oranges, just get your Bananas out of here.
*EDIT*
Also I have heard from Sprint Reps the EPIC will be out no later than August, more likely mid July.
Additionally CLEAR will be starting phone services this year and have announced HTC and Samsung devices, most likely these two.
Hardware keyboards are one thing (I tend to not like them), but horizontal hardware keyboards are just terrible. Am I the only one that almost never holds their phone horizontally?
I'll keep my EVO, or go with the standard Galaxy S, as long as it can go Vanilla.

I was interested in this phone also until I did a bit more research on custom roms etc. There won't be any!
Apparently Samsung has some kind of security on the phone that you can't touch the drivers. From what I read its impossible to do ANYTHING without the drivers.
It doesn't look good at all for custom roms etc on the Samsung. Just not worth losing all the custom things on my EVO.
I can tell the OP never had a Samsung phone the Moment which is also a Samsung phone does have a development community behind it, Google SDX-Developers.
Also the skin can be replaced easily and cooking an AOSP ROM isn't exactly hard. Two big pluses I can't get over that keep ringing in my head are the sexy as hell SUPER AMOLED screen and the Hummingbird processor, which spanks the Snapdragon in every benchmark.

Did I say anything about root? What does root have to do with drivers?? Maybe you need to do some research!! Samsung has their own security on the phone to protect their drivers!! This is a fact. Go read the Samung Galaxy S forums that are right here and thats been the case with past Samsung phones.
I didnt mention kernel either. Did you even read my post?

If that's been the case with past Samsung phones, then why are there like 20+ custom ROMs for the Moment alone that work perfectly fine with original drivers and are completely different from stock builds.
I know this because I came from a Moment been rooting/flashing/hacking it since the day it was released, this is the first I've ever heard of anything like this and it was never a problem then, unless this is new for the Galaxy S line which I doubt.
Also the reason I brought up custom ROMs was because you brought them up:

To defend the epic it hasn't been out to long. How long did it take HTC to get out froyo for the evo...what 2 plus months. The community for the Epic too is far ahead of what the community was a the same time for the Hero. So if it is that important to you that you have a larger e-penis then I fully understand your bias and random facts...

Nope nothing to do with e-penis. Has to do with the fact that I know HTC has better support for their phones than Samsung.
My friend has the epic, I think it has one of the best hardware keyboards out there the Super AMOLED screen is awesome, and the processor is great. With all that being said, I have no faith in Samsung taking care of the phone as much as HTC does.
And if you want to go by your line of thinking the Samsung Galaxy S line has been out longer than the HTC EVO and not ONE of them has Froyo on them officially yet.
HTC has put froyo on quite a few different models so far, and Samsung can't do it on their one line of phones that's supposed to be their top of the line phone which has already shipped 1 million units in the US alone.

Yes, but the htc was initially released with android 1.0, and froyo wasn't released for another month. But epic was released 2 months AFTER froyo was released, and they have plenty of time to recode it for froyo and then release it. So in total it's been 3 months since froyo was released and epic doesn't have it atm.
And Sprint/HTC were the first to rollout Froyo. (Google pushed it for the Nexus One).
Before I click the link, knowing cnet I bet they mentioned iPhone several times lol.

To debunk you, the Galaxy S line of phones has been out across multiple carriers and countries for as long as the Evo has been out. There are only two minor differences between other Galaxy S phones and the Epic - hardware keyboard and WiMax. They could have pushed out a Froyo update by now but Samsung is just full of fail.

I was really only upset about the part that you were implying that my opinion had to do with me worrying about the size of my e-penis.
Hardware wise the Galaxy S is undeniably a better phone, but from my experience (and yes I've owned Samsung phones too), Samsung is horrible with software. Back in the old days software wasn't a huge part of cell phones, but today, no matter how good the hardware, bad software will make a phone bad. I'm not implying the Galaxy S software is bad, I actually kinda like touchwiz, but I'm worried about how long Samsung will have people like my friend stuck on 2.1.
I made no opinion on the Galaxy S hacking community since I have no experience on what they're doing.
To end this debate, I have the largest e-penis.

To be honest I am worrried about samsungs support too. I really want them o support it. They just released an update. And another one is coming soon for the gps so they are doing something. froyo is just. Little off. I don't even want to talk aboujt gingerbread. Apologies for saying you were trying to enlarge your epenis...immature on my part!

no one here is saying anything about the phone itself. Everyone knows the hardware is at the top of the pyramid. The only reason the evo vs epic threads happen is because of the software portion. We know that evo is behind in hardware, but the software/updates make up for that. And to a normal user, the software part is what matters. The main argument between the evo vs epic thread is about the horrible support samsung has done in the past. No one knows if samsung will turn it around for epic, but it's looking like that so far. (this is coming from seeing an article about a new samsung galaxy S phone coming out, and it looks like the epic will be left behind just like all the other galaxy S line was left with gps/capacitative buttons/etc..
Personally thats why I didn't buy the phone. I'm still within my 30 day limit and can get it in a snap, but I just dont trust samsung, just like the thousands, if not millions of other people, that have gotten screwed by their older phones (instinct mainly).
but then again, even if samsung were to release the froyo update, most wouldn't switch because of the development support here. If froyo is released, and if htc doesn't release gingerbread to us before that, then I will admit that the epic is a better phone from top to bottom (minus the screen, 4.3 beats the **** out of anything), but I just don't see that happening.
both are great phones but it comes down to this
physical keyboard
From my own experience, the epic was an epic fail. I had one the day they were released and my touch buttons didn't respond unless I put a considerable amount of force on em. My wife got one the same day and her epic didn't have that problem, so I thought I can live with it, but alas, it got to the point where it wouldn't respond at all at times. But, that wasn't the deal breaker. The slide mechanism started coming loose and I could feel the screen flopping as I typed which was unbearable to I returned it for another.
The Second Epic I had seemed okay, or so I thought. I brought it home charged it, ran through the setup and yada yada and everything was kosher. Until I tried to charge it while at work. I almost ran it dead and plugged it in, an hour later I went to check on it and it had the battery symbol with a thermometer flashing. Tried to pick it up and it was burning hot. Unplugged, let it cool, turned it on and it was so laggy I couldn't even get the dialer to come up. So I returned that one too, lucky for me they just had a new shipment of Evos come in so I snatched one up while I could.
Two epics to one evo, my money's on the Evo.
Im jumping onto the Evo!!!! I am returning my Epic tmmrw and then ordering an Evo, I just need a PHONE and not a supercomputer in my pocket, not saying the Evo isnt great and fast, I just dont need what the Epic has to offer at this time, community is more important than the Screen hahaha

Nexus S - Disappointment?

Anyone else think that the Nexus S is kind of a disappointment?
There's nothing revolutionary or really exciting about it. It's specs sound like it's just another Galaxy S device. No dual core, no HSDPA+, nada.
Now, to be clear, I'm talking just about the device itself. Not Gingerbread. Gingerbread looks hot. Curious to hear what you folks think about the device.
No sd card slot but has a 16 gig storage. I guessing Google corrected the available memory issue with 2. 3
I think it to early to draw up any conclusions with what we have on hand.

It's a Samsung which for me, after my experience with the Vibrant, equals 'never again'.
If anything I do hope that the Nexus S, by extension, will provide some much needed relief to those who are sticking it out with their Vibrants, etc.
Just my take, I'm not a phone buff or geek, I just want my device to work properly, which is why I switched to the G2.
I've had a vibrant. Felt too cheap to me. Sad part it wasn't cheap. Paid 500 for it. The lack of support and gps issue is what turned me away. It was a nice phone. Just not my style. As I'm sure just by looking at the nexsus s, they will have the same issues. But I could be wrong. Maybe google will put a flame under samsungs butt and make them correct their errors in a fast manner.

That simple little statement is what made me turn my head. I love Google, and I think them working to make a phone with a company means it will be a good phone. I believe Samsung will get more respect from this phone, but Samsung's plastic has always stood out and this phone looks like it has just as much as any other Samsung phone. It has decent specs, nothing groundbreaking by any means, but just as nice as any other smart phone out now.
Remind me, wasn't the N1 the first phone to have a 1GHz processor? At least one of the first? I figured Google's second phone would be VERY top of the line instead of average.

Yeeeep. It was the very first. Big reason I dumped my Droid for the Nexus One way back when. That and I didn't like Verizon's service.
That's part of the reason I was so disappointed with the specs on the Nexus S. Nothing revolutionary again. Just another Galaxy S.
If I were holding out for the Nexus S, then yes, I would be disappointed. But I wasn't since I'm still in love with my G2. Can't believe Google would let this thing go to T-Mobile USA with those specs. Not dual core, no HSPA+, less ram than the MyTouch, less screen than the HD7, no hdmi out, not even a kickstand? Can a brother get a kickstand? And this is supposed to be the flagship Android phone? Ha, it won't even be the best phone at T-Mobile.

Indeed. Great show. Kids these days don't know what they're missing.
long story short, its a disappointment.
TBH, the only thing I am actually DISAPOINTED with is the lack of an Orion processor... rumor had it that it was delayed because of that issue! What is gonna happen is in 2 months all the tegra 2 devices are gonna start showing up and your "Flagship" device is already sub-par/obsolete

just in time for a Nexus 2 ...
new **** happens. there's money to be made beforehand.
Sooo disappointed
First of all, I love my N1 and sorry for the long post but i have to vent.
I bought a Nexus One in February when it came for T-mobile only and then gave it away to my brother in law who had T-Mobile when the AT&T N1 came out and bought that. My contract with AT&T has been up for a couple of months now and i was really hoping for a device (from google) that would be better than the N1 (for future proofing for at least 6 months).
Well this device is better than the N1 but not enough to ditch the N1 and get this. Here are the reasons:
Biggest disappointment: Only a 5 MP camera still? Come on Google? The EVO has an 8MP camera and has been out for months. I know phone cameras really aren't meant to replace traditional digital cameras but my sisters EVO takes pictures that are great (in the correct light) and if i had that i wouldn't even buy a new digital camera.
Second biggest disappointment: Not CDMA. I want to switch to sprint or verizon. If Google/ Samsung comes out with a CDMA version i might overlook the other disappointments and ditch the N1.
Now other reasons why Nexus S is not really that much better than the N1 to warrant another $529.
Processor: I don't know too much about the speed difference in the processors but i'm assuming they will roughly perform the same. However, i think within next couple of months new Android / Non-Android phones will come out with better processors and this will be outdated. I must add though, i haven't really seen any lag on the 1 ghz.
Video: I'm guessing the Nexus S will record 720p video, but so does my N1 (with cyanogen) and so does the EVO and many many other devices. 1080 would have been the next step and another reason i might have upgraded. Not on my top priority list though.
I don't really care that much about that NFC thing. I am curious to try it, but not enough to shell out $529 (i don't want contracts). Once more vendors support this it will become more important but not at this point.
Nexus S will probably be better for 3D gaming as the GPU on N1 supposedly sucks. I'm assuming the gingerbread advantage for 3d gaming will also be applicable to N1 but Nexus S will probably have a better GPU. I don't care about this too much because i don't play much 3d games on phones anyway but other people might weigh this more.
Yes to me its a Flopfor the the simple fact its just a google version of Galaxy S. BUT then again, after my experiance with my behold II, i will NEVER buy a samsung phone again, thats just me though... Besides my G2 is great been a while since i had a phone i was happy with.

Phone of the Year!

Galaxy S II the envied one.
How many of you here have noticed the tides change. This phone is really the hottest phone on the planet right now. I remember a couple months back how everyone was talking about the sensation/ evo3d, optimus 2x and 3d, people were in love with tegra 2 and in a couple months it becomes the fastest phone with best screen anyone has used according to many reputable gadget sites and blogs. How many people think this is the hottest phone this year? It has destroyed all other dual core competition in the android arena. Do you think this is going to be the first huge hit for android world wide? How many think GSII has pushed android to aa whole new level?!
Hail SGS2.
It is gonna sell hot cakes.

I think you're in love pal.
Well,it has taken Android to new heights, that's for sure. But wait,we still have a long way to go.
Yeh i can see gs2 going furthere with some updates. But it is getting alto of press, that's always a good thing

Right now it could be the best one but we still have 6 months to go. There is iPhone 5 looming around the corner. Lets wait and see what they have to bring to the table. Although I am Android till the end it is still always nice to see what Apple has to bring because they quite often bring something new and "revolutionary" to the competition.
SGS2 is good but it is kind of like "just" beefed up and perfected version of SGS.
It is actually quite interesting with Android phones because there doesn't seem to be anything new and great coming. Although I am suspecting that for christmas sales there must be something great
SGS2 is a fine piece of kit and a great advert for how good Android can be. The only thorn in the side for me is the silly Tegra fragmentation - and gaming is where the SGS2 could really shine due to the screen and cpu grunt. I know we have Chainfire but it's not the same.
Funny thing is I dislike all things Apple but I can see myself getting the next iPhone.
It's definitely a very good phone. Yes, and it's surely the best dual-core out there. Like someone mentioned, Apple will launch their version of dual core soon. We will wait and see how that goes. I have a feeling that the Apple going to use the Arc camera module.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/02/sony-ceo-casually-mentions-hes-supplying-cameras-to-apple/
I think SGS3 would be launched around Q1 2012 (speculation and some rumors in the internet) http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/30/samsung-teases-4g-tablet-for-2011-galaxy-s-iii-in-first-half-of/
I am expecting the SGS3 to have the super-duper-uber screen from the new OLED plant that Samsung just got operational and sort out some of the issues with GS2. GS2 rectified some of the issues with SGS - like GPS, Pentile matrix, not-so-good TW3 and improved on their strong points - hardware. GS3 "should" be something revolutionary.
I believe that GS3 will be something which would totally blow the market away. Sammy had already shown they can make great dual core device. That would (imho) represent a crowning glory.
i have never understood how people call thing best of the year since we are only half way through it..
Its like when i hear ads on the radio..Fast Five: "BEST MOVIE THIS YEAR".... 1month later X-Men First Class: "BEST MOVIE THIS YEAR"
.. and when transformers 3 comes out.. i will hear the same thing.
but yeah.. i would say SGSII is the best phone out right now.. but not best of the year..
Phone truly does take Android to new heights. First real phone that combats the iPhone's "smoothness" or fluidity, not to mention it looks stunning!
If other phones follow in its footsteps...Android will reign supreme!
And I think it is definitely the best phone of the year, hands-down - seeing as 3D is still (mainly) viewed as a gimmick (plus they're really fat)
HAVING SAID THAT, I'm excluding the Nexus 3/4G and whichever OTHER quad-core devices that are coming this fall. But I imagine quad-core will mainly be the "topic" of 2012, as dual-core has been for 2011.
and like i said.. we still have 6months of the year left.. how can any one say this is the best phone of 2011?

Because people know, what is coming out. Films aren't like phone. Few phones come out, that can ever contend for the best phone of the year.
There aren't meant to be any big releases now, until the end of the year, in which there's no point in saying "BEST PHONE FOR 2011!" (for a month of two) as we move into 2012.
Lots of time left this year indeed. But is there anything really big on the horizon, except for next iPhone? And this phone is called one of the more "future proof" ones. Lets see what the times bring...
SGSII is the best so far
I don't see anyone pushing out anything better. The next iphone might be a worthy contender, but don't forget, it still has iOS *shudders*

+1. the only contenders are the iPhone 5 (but the whole iOS Android think, kinda separates the two)
and the Nexus 3. If rumoured to have a 720p, 4.3"/4.5" display AND a quad-core KAL-EL - that will be the phone of the year for 2011 (or what's left of it) and 2012....until the S3/HTC's equivelant.
But there's no point crowning a phone, phone of the year, for 2 months. :/
Don't get me wrong, i love my Samsung Galaxy S 2, the specs and tests might recommend it as the best device of the year, until now, but i have another top in mind: "2011 dual-processor smartphone with the fewest flaws". Maybe someone collects all the weak spots of S 2, Optimus 2x and Sensation and makes a non-biased comparison to see which device wins from this point of view. Although i think S 2 was the best choice for me, it's still far from my concept of a perfect phone.
3 of my friends wer so impressed they jumped ship two from iphone 4 and one from nokia n8 and we all have this phone more of my mates are going to get it when ther upgrade is due

Doesn't matter if a better phone comes out, the SGS2 is a significant milestone. The iPhone was a "phone of the year" kind of phone, and so was the Blackberry before that. Were the iPhone 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. "phone's of the year"? No, not really. SGS2 is where all the most important pieces came together for Android - processor, display, system integration, 3rd part apps, to where out of the box, it is a powerful tool, it SOLVES THE PROBLEM. There will be better phones on the horizon, but the SGS2 is the phone, like the Blackberry and iPhone, that redefined the industry.
The Sensation is possibly the most comparable phone to the SGS2 at the moment and seems to be getting a lot of attention. Some would say the HTC is better. To my eyes, it's ugly sitting next to the slim, sleek lines of the SGS2.
