I know we had a thread open, but no one definitively came forward to say they received the notification. I am wondering if anyone has personally been served a tethering notice for non iphone, android use, or for excessive bandwith usage on the unlimited plan which many of us have, or will have thanks to the Iphone2g loophole: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008698 for more info.
I use my Atrix to tether almost daily. A co-worked also uses my connection. I use about 4-5 gig per billing cycle and never got anything from ATT. This usage started with my iPhone and Netflix. I can't wait until it is available on the Market. Until then I want to use about the same so there are no hiccups.
I have hit 10 gigs plus each month with my atrix and tethering. I use it for everything. Xbox live 2 computers and an ipad. Never been hit by ATT for tethering or excessive bandwith usage. I have also received 150 off my last two bills due to ATT not being able to provide HSUPA.

Sweet!! How you get the reimbursement?
I use 4 gigs on my phone alone no tethering what so ever and AT&T hasn't shown any interest

I use barnacle for tethering on my iPad and iTouch and netbooks at school. Nothing yet. I use up around 5 gigs a month, and nothing yet.
I'm not expecting to be caught, but if I do, sucks for me.
I too used to use my iPhones for netflix (still do on my ipad and netbooks), so these data rates are abnormal for me.

I reached 20GB from downloading Torrents, Streaming Netflix on my XBox, playing online computer games, PSN, and XBL. (One at a time).
That was last month and I haven't gotten a warning of any sort.....
When I play online it doesn't lag if I only have one thing connected at a time.
I used it for halo reach. It worked really well. Im sure it will be even better with hsupa. That was in raleigh nc getting around 1.5 down and 3.3 up.
Packetloss and upload we're undetected. NAT was moderate. Seemed like games took a little longer to load. Playing cyrsis 2 the lag was a little more noticable but still I can't complain. My wife tried playing nascar 2011 on xbl but was unable to get into a race. I did notice phone calls, text messages, and data traffic would kick me offline. But I can't complain it worked for me

I am in the 4gb range at most with the occasional tether. I am so proud of you guys getting 20gb month, I would be too afraid to get caught plus there is so much free wifi around me.

my previous phone was the t9193 (imported hd2) and i was on the $10 dumb phone plan. I would hit 9-12gb per month, and never had an issue, tethering nearly everyday.
Just got my atrix a few days ago, (used the iphone 2g trick to get the unlimited data plan. sucks going from 10 to 30, but meh) and im already at 3gb. Almost all tethering.
I have had the t-mobile t-zones $5.99 plan for over 4 years, now grandfathered, but it works flawlessly on my HTC Touch Pro 2 (WM6.5). No issues there. That phone however is only 3g.
I live in an area with full 4g spectrum and would surely like to make use of that.
With that said, i bought a non-contract HTC myTouch 4g.
After popping in my SIM, the web browser forwards me to an upsell page, where it asks me to upgrade my plan to a $30 android plan.
Now, times are tough and the gold is scarce so i'm definitely not looking to get a $25 jump in my plan, times two (for my wife too) total $50/mo more... for something that we already have for years.
I've tried various settings for APN that i could find from some forums but everything leads me back to the upsell page.
epc, wap, internet1, internet2 ... etc..
Interestingly I had tested this out on a friends phone a few months ago before buying my own, (myTouch 4G) using my SIM and it gave me an awesome throughput of close to 7megs down.
T-mo tech support said it'll not work with the $5.99 tzones as the android phone accesses the data in a different way! baloney!
Please point me in the right direction...
Has anyone made this work ?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

The support person was telling the truth, the phone really requires the 30 bux to get data. There's always the cheaper data w/ 200MB if you want that(Will use really quickly!). There's no way to avoid this, even if you are grandfathered in.
Unfortunately they know which phone your using from the imei number, and therefore block it. If you another phone that showed it as unknown or any phone that came out during that promotion would have worked.

no wonder t-mo cant make it... no one should expect any company to give 4g for $6, let along unlimited 4g.

T-zone will work with any phone that is not a Blackberry, Android, Windows, or Symbian. The Nokia Nuron and the Samsung Gravity T are the two most popular options for that data feature.

Dude I understand ur pain...u should return that device an get a non T-Mobile android phone.
It will be not be detected if it is an ATT phone for example and therefore will not required u to add a data plan, viceversa is the sameway. U see O .
But If you add it...certainly u will see a big difference on the use that you can give it to you PDA.

AT&T phones will only get EDGE on T-mobile, and vice verse. Now if you get a Canadian HTC Glacier (myTouch 4G) or something it might be a different story...
I know how you feel. When I signed my wife up a year ago I had an iPhone and was using the T-Zones plan flawlessly. They saw that and were like, "t-zones doesn't even exist anymore" and made me upgrade my iPhone to a $20 plan. When I got the MT4G I had to upgrade to the $30 plan. It works well, but you're right, it's a lot of money...

My judgmental friends, i'm looking for technical advise... not financial or personal.
You don't know me, nor my situation so don't judge.
And yes, i do drive an expensive car and I wouldn't mind taking it to Walmart if they serviced it or there was a Walmart nearby.
Please pay attention to this :
1. I've had t-zones for ages and over this period it has worked flawlessly with most models of Blackberry i have owned.
2. I have HTC Touch Pro 2, which runs WM6.5 for last 2 years and i get super 3G speeds unlimited, not the razor era Bamm Bamm!
3. I tested my SIM out with a colleagues HTC myTouch 4G before i got my own - and it worked awesome a month or so ago.
So in essence it's not the protocol the phone is accessing TCP, it's something T-Mobile is blocking.
This move by t-mobile would be justified if i got the device from them for free and obviously being fair, they want to recover their cost.
And yes, getting a non-contract phone is cheaper than getting a contract one in this case... astonishingly i used my 3rd grade math to figure that out.
In closing, i personally do not believe in the notion that "it cannot be done..." someone is already figuring it out somewhere in the world while you were saying that!!!!
Peace!
Technically, theoretically, there is a way to keep your tzones with tmobile by changing one number. But I think its illegal to do, nor will I tell you. And I think you will still be 3g...
I have to say suck it up and pay the piper. Oh and the data is $20 for preffered customers.
Why do you deserve to pay only $6 when the rest of us are paying for it? I've been on tmo since voice stream....

Aggreed you can get 20 android web as a long standing customer. To get t zones to work you'll need to spoof your imei. And FWIW the nexus1 works with t zones because it was never sold in stores or thru tmo.

Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Technical support, I agree with u. If you had purchased a different PDA on different provider it would not required to update your service. The network recognizes the imei of the phone and by the new pda policy you have to add a data.
It happens with every provider.
Good luck man.

EDIT: Comment deleted. Ain't worth it.
Just to help the OP out, the reason why the mytouch 4g probably worked was because you inserted a new sim into the phone. That's why, alot of phones work the first couple days using a phone with tzones but after a couple days, you're sent to the upsell page. Tmobile has a listing of all the imei's that they sell.
The nexus one was not officially sold through tmobile - always sold through google.com. As such, tmobile doesn't "have" your imei to know, but they kinda do. if you called into 611 in the first few months of the nexus one release, it sent you to google for tech support vs. tmobiles helpline. however, tmobile just chose to never block the nexus one. however, if you bought a g2, mytouch 4g, nexus s, etc....your tzones normally works for about 24-48 hours and then boom...upsell page. I know this cause everytime there's a new phone release, i try to see if it works on tzones. I personally can understand not wanting to leave tzones. I have it from when it was 2.99 + i get a 18% student discount that has yet to stop too. it's hard for me to let go of unlimited internet for so cheap, but in all honesty, i make enough money where i probably should pay the $20 for the unlimited android plan so i don't have to be so picky and choosy with my phones. before the whole 3g craze, i would change phones every few months.....and now, i keep using my nexus one and buy other phones and won't relinquish the nexus one because it's incompatible with the cheap data plan. I think i just might let it go for the sensation 4g though, we'll see. i've had to say goodbye to a tmobile g2, nexus s, and g2x already.
hey u guys only pay 20 bucks for unlimited data on the mytouch 4g? they charge me 30 dollars and i have been with tmobile since 2009 lol
Need a promo plan to get promo data. Got 3 lines unlimited text, 3K mins, and unlimited data with the 5GB soft cap, not 2GB. Paying 175. Also my line routinely bumps 10GB plus without any balk from tmo. Maybe cuz my mom doesn't touch her data so they let me munch off her allotment.

You can tether for free (after root, remove or freeze tether manage app). and then you can tether for free unlimited (with "4g" speed) without being throttled if you use the APN trick (search for it).
Apn trick does not work

It does work for me. I am at 200MB unlimited plan and I have used 413MB so far. I have deleted tether manager and tethering does work for me. I have been tethering my phone with my samsung galaxy 10.1 tab. I don't stream at all so I don't use that much data. You would be surprised how much data 'word with friends' uses though.
so does that mean we'll have to call in tmo and request for this new free service? for our rooted phones with tether manager frozen, do we need to unfreeze it or re-install it?
Just use tether as u would if u were rooted. No need to freeze anything.

I currently have the 5GB Android Preferred Data plan. Short story: it looks like users on this plan is not eligible for free hotspot.
Called t-mo this morning regarding the hotspot promo. First with regular CSR. She was aware of this promo, but said that free hotspot is only available as a bundle with the premium 5GB (or 10GB) data plan. Android Preferred Data Plan subscriber has to "upgrade" to one of the regular bundles.
Called t-mo again now asked for retention. He was NOT aware of this promo. Checked with his supervisor and they do not see any free hotspot feature as an add-on. He said he's terribly sorry but there was nothing he can click to add on. He said that if something became available he will call me back.

Tried the APN manager trick but didn't work for me either. Deleting the pcweb.t-mobile.com APN does not work for me as it'll just reappear.
I had to use the new SIM that came with the white S2 to enable wifi-calling, and I suspect that the pcweb.t-mobile.com APN is hardcoded on the SIM. And everytime you change the APN, it'll copy the that pcweb APN back to your phone.
If there's anyone who got the APN trick to work with new SIM, please voice your success!

loyalty (retention) department and regular CSR are definitely different departments and seeing different promotion lists.
I tried it again with loyalty. The rep did not know this promotion either looked it up in "the other department." However, she said that since the Preferred Android Data plan is already a promotional plan, I won't be able to get the hotspot feature unless I switch to the regular 5GB data plan. I respectfully declined.
Grrr. I think I may be getting frustrated enough to want to root my phone!
Has anyone tried the APN trick to allow hotspot, using a new SIM with wifi-calling enabled? (ie. delete the pcweb.t-mobile.com APN)

If you have the 5GB plan @ $30 they just add it on for free. If you have the loyalty "preferred android web" @ $20 it seems most CSRs won't add it unless you "upgrade" to the $30 plan. However, there seems to be at least one successful situation where the rep added it to the loyalty plan YMMV.
I added it but I upgraded from the $20 "android preferred web" (5GB soft cap) to the $30 plan. I felt the upgrade was worth it, since it seems that T-Mobile is making it more difficult to get around tethering (even rooted) with every new phone they release.

I dont understand why yu want to get it free. You are allowing your phone to give internet access to multiple devices thereby increasing bandwidth usage compared to how much youd overall use by accessing data services on your phone alone (hence throttling)Explain how it should be free?.

If he has unlimited data yes. If a customer has a 2gb hspa+ and unlimited edge after, who cares whether it's his phone or comp using the data? Charging for tethering is just charging for the service not the data. And considering a simple free app can do that service why should he pay extra?

Data is data. Ones and zeros are ones and zeros. Im paying for ones and zeros. Not to mention i rarely use tethering at all, i just want it handy for that "every once in a while." $15 a month doesnt constitute that. Nor does it constitute using one of them "shared" bull **** that is $15 a month just to enable my phone to do it and use up the same data pool. Its a money grab and i refuse to pay for it.

This is right. You are already paying for your 2GBs, you should be able to use it as you want. Because at the end of the day, your going to get throttled once you hit your limit.
so even if your using just your phone, or a hotspot the data you use with the devices don't change.

T-Mobile didn't "figure you out" - most tethering is easily detectable. It's a matter of "does T-Mobile care enough to do anything about it?" ... Until recently, that answer was no.
The information to get around T-Mobile's tethering detection is available in this forum (read: search for it). I'll give you a hint: the user agent gives you away.

I dont understand why yu want to get it free. You are allowing your phone to give internet access to multiple devices thereby increasing bandwidth usage compared to how much youd overall use by accessing data services on your phone alone (hence throttling)Explain how it should be free?.

Do you own Tmobile stock?! What difference does it make? You know some of us are irritated that we are paying for unlimited data with at&t and we aren't able to tether our laptops every once in awhile. I have no need for tethering 95% of the time. But when I'm on the road and I need to check something on a flash website it is nice to be able to use my laptop. I shouldn't have to lose unlimited data AND have my data bill go up 66% just because I need to tether 15 times a year. You know if they said hey if you are going to be traveling pay us $5 and we will let you tether for a month I would say fine.

I used to get the nasty emails from Ma Bell until I started using USB exclusively and Opera browser (uses a proxy). Ever since then, I've never gotten another one.
Seriously just pay for it with tmo.. Its like the people that pirate apk's... its a couple bucks for those and its like, why waste the time?
You "righteous" dudes are missing the point. I totally understand what the OP is saying. If I'm already paying for a certain amount of data, who gives a damn HOW it is used. In the end I'm STILL using the amount of data I paid for. Nothing more, nothing less. Charging for that is just like double billing in my opinion. These providers will do ANYTHING to milk more money out of the consumer.
Tmob is a business, not a non profit orginization. it's not like charging for the service is done just to "rob" consumers, if it wasn't for everyone expecting everything for free I think technological advancements would be in a completely different place. We only hinder ourselves with our sense of entitlement. I get the point of only tethering so often, but again, few ruin it for the many and use their phone as a modem for Netflix. Too bad it's in our nature to exploit everything. Just sayin

I do not believe issues such as this to be an unwarranted sense of entitlement. I have been an "unlimited" data user at At&T since 2005 - back when tethering was included in data. It was so little an issue back then I once called AT&T to ask for help setting up my Blackberry 7100.
For me to continue using my phone to tether win I switched to an iPhone, they tried to upsell me to a tethering plan, and the same when I briefly used a focus. I told them then, and I will tell them now, that as long as the plan that we BOTH agreed to regarding my ToS say that tethering is indeed included in my data plan - its not an entitlement, it is a right protected by the contract I had to sign while buying my beloved 8125.
The OP's individual situation may be different than this - but in all reality, if there is no abuse of the data caps on the users end - charging extra for tethering is in really bad taste from any of the carriers. It is NOT a service that they provide - it's a well established feature withing operating systems of the phones they sell. If that is unacceptable to them, then stop selling smartphones and go back to series Nokia 6125's. Then offer the 3g/4g hotspots as their own service so there is no longer a redundancy between smartphones and hotspots. Charging for both is just plain stupid.
Especially if the data plan I pay for has more than covered the data I use. I tether my laptop and tablet once or twice a week, and have not come close to the 5GB "softcap". If I'm not going over my limit, Who the heck are you to tell me I'm abusing the network? Leave me alone and go bother the jerk who's torrenting 720p movies on Friday night.
I posted this on reddit aswell... I usually follow xda/reddit (android) closely and haven't heard of this so i thought i would warn others.
Well i had a feeling this day would finally come, a frustratingly sad day. This is my story so i don't know how prevalent it may be. I am running a galaxy note 3. I am part of the originally "unlimited data plan" that i have been grandfathering the past few years. My galaxy note 3 is rooted and using a SafeStrap based custom rom. Ofcourse it has all the nice tweaks/xposed modules that i have learn to love in the android community. Ofcourse it enables tethering.
I don't use tethering often (mainly when i dont have Wifi, or if in public to avoid crappy wifi coverage). So i mainly use 1-2 gb a month of random google music tethering/other misc downloads updates... so i am NOT being an excessive user. So my total usage is between 2.5-3 gigs. I was contacted from AT&T yesterday (by text 2-3 days ago, phone call yesterday). They gave an ultimatum. They called out explicitly that i was using unauthorized tether (not using a large amount of data as you can see).
The ultimatum was:
Your service is been cancelled at the end of the month.
OR
Moving to the "Family Plan" shared/capped data plan. They also required tethering to be added on to the plan since i was using it.
This is old news. The release of Android 4.1 enabled carriers to see the difference between using data, and redistributing or tethering data.
There are work arounds for this. Some devs even remove this feature from their roms. You have to do your research on it though.
This is still good info though for new users.
Wow wish they would have threatened to cancel my service. I would have said thanks.
I just switched to the mobile share 8gb plan, which includes mobile hotspot, and have never gone over 6gb for the whole family ever with my old plan with 4 lines having 3gb and my unlimited costing nearly 400 a month now costs around 300. I don't think its too bad.

If they cancel your service you have to pay off the remainder of your contract agreement. For some it might not be to bad. But for someone that just renewed it could be costly!

FWIW i'm at 110gb this cycle (8 days left) which is rather typical of my usage and haven't heard a peep. I use a Motorola Atrix running CM as a mobile hotspot, rather than my G Note 3, however.

Thank you for making AT&T pay for being douche of a carrier. :good:

I'd stick to the atrix unless you know you can spoof/vpn the traffic (or what ever preventative measures). Just frustrating cause i dont even abuse my tether... like 3 gigs a month on an unlimited plan (and using unauthorized tethering)... they should pay me for NOT abusing it... lol.
Needless to say... now there is nothing "keeping" me at ATT once my contract is up... since i dont have my unlimited plan anymore! Hopefully in next year or so the other carriers (tmobile/sprint) will be just as good at half the price... i dont mind an ocassional dropped call/spotty coverage if it means i'm paying half :good:
Edit: Also made this post so others will know... so they don't "lose" unlimited plan and get screwed if they are new to the scene

Please share your secret with me!!! I hit 5gb's and AT&T throttles me so hard it takes 10 minutes to download a 4mb app from the Play Store.

T mobile will pay your early termination fees if you want out of your contract.
http://www.t-mobile.com/offer/switch-carriers-no-early-termination-fee.html
To the Op, are you 100% certain that this is you very FIRST time being contacted by AT&T? I ask ask you because along with myself and several of my former GS2 users we received messages from AT&T telling us that they saw that we were tethering and told us to stop or be forced to a tethering plan.So I chose to stop and not lose my unlimited plan. We all were on unlimited and I'm still on unlimited on my Note 3.
DA_G what APN are you using on your atrix. May worth a try for those of us running SS ROMs and can change APN.

I was warned about 3 times about tethering with my phone. I too am an original unlimited data plan grandfathered in at $30 Bucks a MONTH! MUHAHAHA! The 1st time it happened it said on my bill "TETHERWARN" $0.00
Kind of scared me a bit but I continued to do it anyway and received 2 more warnings this way. I guess because it was only for a couple MB of data here and there. Some months nothing and other months just a tiny bit because I was scared at that point. Didn't want to lose my unlimited plan. :victory:
Unfortunately I found out we really don't have TRUE unlimited data anyway. After you go over 4.5GB used for the month you will receive a text message saying after 5GB you will be throttled big time!!! I was so SHOCKED by this! I can't believe I'm really only getting 5GB of data when it's supposed to be unlimited. I guess they changed everything after the family share crap started.
Figured I'd share this if anyone still has the grandfathered "Unlimited Data" plan. THEY ARE LIARS!
PS. I still tether THOUGH!! I have a windows surface tablet and use PDA NET for desktop and the FOXFI app in the play store! I can ONLY tether using bluetooth or USB though because the WiFi tether is disabled in settings now, which doesn't really bother me because it is fast enough to browse the web or even play World of Warcraft with the bluetooth tether option. It is actually decently fast with USB tether also. HERE'S THE BEST PART! PDA NET SCRUBS all PC data from the packets sent and received! There is an advanced addon feature you can download from FOXFI that does this for you. The free version shuts off at 50MB of data transferred and you just have to click the checkbox off and back on to get it to reconnect for an addition 50MB. OR, you can pay the 7 or 8 bucks for the full version and never be interrupted. I'm about to buy it because I haven't received any TETHER WARNS from att since I started using PDA NET! I think it does the scrubbing of PC data from the packets very well. I drive for a living so tethering for me is mandatory on my windows tablet. So if you are about to lose your data plan JUST BE CAREFUL and do your research! There is always a way with computers! Hoped this helps someone...Thanks for reading and sorry this is so LONGGGGGGGG!

This was what I've been looking for! Thank you.
I also have a grandfathered data plan, and get throttled after ~4.5GB of use. I've received several warnings about tethering but thankfully my family plan wasnt botched - I've just had to stop tethering... Until Now! PDA Net FTW.
Question!
If you tether from one ATT phone to another ATT phone or tablet (but not ATT), can they tell? (without having to use PDA NET)

I received and email like that a couple of years ago except they told me to stop or else. Needless to say, I stopped.
That is a good question. I really don't know for certain because I no longer use my nexus 7 anymore since I got my windows surface. I do believe PDA Net has an android version which I would assume does the same thing as my desktop version. But then if you consider it's a mobile device with no PC info to scrub(I think that was your question) it might just look like it's your actual phone using that data. Really is a good question that I cannot answer with certainty. Sorry, I can't help with that one. :what::what::what::what:
