Hey all,
I finally got rid of my HD7 after constant struggles with the device.
I guess my question is simple: So what are your guys' impressions and thoughts on the DVP? I ordered it today and should be expecting it on Monday. I've been reading reviews and stuff all day long, but wanted some firsthand thoughts on this device.
Thanks.
Constant Strugles with the DVP. It is a new OS that needs to be updated. So I dont think it matters which WP7 device you get there will always be struggles till the bugs are worked out.
honestly? I wish it ran Android LOL. This OS is still very new and apps aren't as plentiful as Android or iOS. I feel like we're the guinea pigs. The OS is cool but I just dont feel its as practical as Android. My biggest concern is all you have is two screens, the home screen with all your tiles and the screen with all your apps. I feel that when it gets to that point where you have tons of apps on your phone its gonna be a pain to look for specific apps. Also, I hope Dell releases an update that allows me to take advantage of the keyboard. For example with WebOS (Palm Pre) I could type somebodys name from the home screen and his/her contact information will pop up, I can type something such as "Mu.." and the Music app will pop up. With me and phones, its all about being efficient, yes I want a pretty OS (which windows phone 7 is) but I want to be able to do things with a quickness and I feel that WP7 falls short on this with certain things.
I like the calendar and music on this OS, web browser is good but could be better. The dedicated camera button is awesome (I think all wp7 phones have this) The games are pretty cool; I haven't gone through all the apps but really simple apps such as notes or timer cost money(stuff life this is typically free on Android)
I like this a hell of a lot more than the iphone4, I returned my iPhone about a week after I bought it, I guess the biggest advantage to this phone is the physical keyboard, the last phone that I remember that was similar to this was the Samsung IP830

Personally I love the OS and android feels very unpolished to me by comparison but it depends on the manufacturer's implementation (I don't like most of them).
The DVP on the other hand would almost be the perfect phone for me if a) the camera actually worked and b) if we could actually unlock it.
My review is the 3 star review on the Dell site with the blurry pictures
The camera is a bit blurry (slower shutter speed) but usable. It can be fixed in an update.
WP7 is still very, very young and CLOSED, and thats the biggest detriment. There's so many things I miss, coming from the Touch Pro 2 (And I had the i730 as posted above AND the i760) and Palm Pre.
It needs a change of radio.
Updates are a little slow coming from MS to fix these things too.
After a couple upgrades, I can see this being an amazing phone. Right now, it's merely just a great phone
Thanks for the thoughts guys.
One of the reasons why I got rid of the HD7 was because of the shoddy build quality. Otherwise, I think WP7 is great, and can only get better from here on out. I hear that the build quality of the DVP is outstanding.

Hi I'm thinking of buying an XDA Exec but I was wondering about it's size. Could anyone post some images of size comparison with other phones/PDA's?
I currently have an Nokia 6680, K750i and a HX4700..
Also just reading around there seems to be quite a lot of issues with the battery life, typically how long does it last for? Can it be improved via ROM updates?
Thanks
Although I don't think it's that much bigger than others (I had an alpine before) it does feel bigger because it has no rounded edges and is thicker due to the keyboard. It is much heavier than an alpine.
For pictures you can look up a review on google, I can't remember the site I saw it on.
Have you tried going down to a phone store and asking to have a look at one?
No one sells it near by
Before I got mine, I was reading about how big it is, how poor the battery life is, but for me the experience has been a good one.
Firstly, size wise, it's quite neat. I have an old pocket pc HP Jornada, and it's about the same size, but slightly thicker. It's a little on the heavy side, but nothing extreme and for the functionality, it has been very much worth it for me.
Battery life, I get around 5 hours continous usage average, when connected the phone network or WIFI (I always stay connected whether at home or away) and do various tasks, including browsing, music/video streaming, terminal services, VNC and such (although I'm not a game player), with the sound on. I charge it up when I get home, or when I get back to my laptop (charge over USB) and I've never had it run out on me, so I'm pretty happy with it. However, I don't have too much experience in the mobile market, so I'm not used to anything else.
Hope this helps

Here is a comparison shot with a Playstation Portable and a T-Mobile SDA which is pretty much standard size Smartphone. Hope this helps!
Here it is compared to a few other devices. Left to right: Audiovox SMT 5600 (HTC Typhoon), Palm Treo 650, Qtek 9000 (HTC Universal), Palm LifeDrive, Dell Axim X3i, Palm Tungsten E.
Thanks that was really useful!, I'm going to bit the bullet and order one now... at the end of the day every phone has it's weakness and after spending days reading review etc i think I'll give this a try..
You'll never look back. But if you do, it'll only be to stick two fingers up at the trans-dimensional quantum version of you that chose the Nokia N73.
Hi there people.
Which one do you people prefer?
I have a 16gb Omnia, but I love Xperia's 256mb RAM, Real Keyboard, Video @ 30fps VGA and the fact its built by HTC...
But happens that I love 5 megapixel camera
What whould you do in my place?
384mb RAM to be exact

really?
I didnt know. Some of this is specific to video like in Diamond?
xperia, no doubt in mind (well, maybe price)
Honestly, I feel the Omnia is severely overrated... I don't think it even deserves a spot in conversation with the Touch Pro, Xperia, etc. Nice phone? Sure. Past that, I don't know... It seems like an iPhone with no capacitive screen and windows mobile. When you take your stylus around, does it go in your purse right next to your tampons and lip gloss?

I have to agree with that, very girlish
but I dont use the stylus, I keep it in my wallet
and I dont think its overrated, great storage, great screen, great gps, great sound
but obviously you cant compare with HTC in build quality and style
The Omnia is actually a very good WinMo phone - probably the best out there at the moment. There is a reason why it seems to be going like hotcakes (I can't get one on Orange but would have no problems getting a Diamond).
Sure the lack of a stylus slot was a serious oversight (well outright dumb to be honest) but I have played around with this and a diamond and I would go with an Omnia everytime. Aesthetics are very subjective, but the phone has a large screen, is eminently pocketable, has a far better battery than the diamond, and isn't as laggy as the diamond. It has good build quality and feels good in the hand and importantly has very good performance and also a very good camera (with a flash )
With regards to this or an Xperia X1 - it comes down to what is more important - screen resolution and keyboard versus slightly bigger screen, massive storage without the need for an extra microSD card (although it does have an expansion slot) and a very good camera.
To be honest I would be happy with either - I need to play with an Xperia (lord knows when that will happen ) before making my final decision.
I seriously considered the Omnia, but I just can't get excited about a WQVGA screen. I went from a VGA screen (Axim xv50) to a QVGA when I decided I needed a converged phone/PDA, so I'm really, really eager to get back at least to the VGA resolution, and I'd love to get to WVGA. If the Omnia had the same screen as the X1 or the Touch HD, it would be very close to my ideal hardware.
(I'm confused about today's news about the Epix, though -- is Epix the new name for the Mirage, which was assumed to be AT&T's name for the Omnia, or are Epix and Mirage different products, so that there's still hope for Omnia appearing soon in AT&T's lineup?)
Can I just say that this phone is great. Samsung really made me happy. I have some of the issues on these forums but consider them quite minor given the benefits the phone allows me.
It's by far and away the best phone i've used. And i'd like to think I have played with/owned most of them, except the latest nokias.
For all the troubles people are reporting there aren't enough of us saying how great it is.
Lets not forget though that the people on this forum also need thanks as they're the ones helping to fix most of the SGS2 troubles some are reporting. Bravo.
I feel that the troubles people are experiencing are minor. Which is great as it means Samsung really put on a good show from day one if all people are complaining about are what I would consider minor usability issues.
At this rate i'll be moving from recommending HTC's latest handsets as the top tier to Samsung.
Agree
By far the best phone I've ever used. Before I got this I had Nexus S for 2 months which I sold for a LG Optimus 2X which lasted just 5days. Lots of positves & the few negatives are pretty minor. A bargain too as I got it on the O2 contract with the cashback deal.
Seems to be quite future proof as well, looks like I might be keeping this one for the full 2yr contract.
this thing blows away everything else to an exponential degree and also agree i can use this for 2 years and am very happy keeping it insured
this phone is great
agree the potential is mind boggling cant wait for roms and themes etc to start
Nice try. .
Best phone that i've ever owned
GPS works great
wifi works great
screen looks great
form factor is awesome
solid construction
best performing portable devices i've ever owned
It makes me want to have sex with it.

I am afraid the vibration feature is too weak due to the miniature form factor.
Also please be careful not to get stuck in the Micro SD card slot, I have heard enough of these stories from my surgeon friend.
yeap agree with everything the op said.this phone dominates.i was going to keep my sgs as a toy but after my sgs2 arrived i didnt touch it again haha.i remember reading all the tech sites, everyone worrying about dual cores chewing battery etc.all i have to say is that my batt life is the same doing the same things it just does it faster.cheers sammy.4th product in a row i bought from them.(wave.sgs.tv.sgs2)
Possibly in some thread somewhere, but I didn't find it so sorry if it's old news.

"... four new Windows Phone 7 handsets running Mango. Acer and ZTE both have models on tap, as does Fujitsu -- which slathered its mobile in pink and gave it a waterproof seal.
The biggest news though was Samsung. Microsoft pulled out what is believed to be the SGH-i937, a version of the Galaxy S II that sports the Redmond mobile OS instead of Android."

Guess Windows Phone and Samsung fans have a reason to be happy. Looking forward to see the specs of that Samsung, even though i'm not passionate about Windows Phones.

For hesitant people like you (and me), someone will cook up a dual boot ROM with Mango and Android 2.3.4
There was a time I only wanted to stay with windows phones, since I was used to the way windows mobile 6.1 worked on my artemis and diamond, and figured windows OS would be easiest to co-exist with my PC for file transfers, syncing and general compatibility.
So I almost bought the Omnia 7. I'm so glad I delayed my upgrade and took the plunge with android on the SGS2. Android is excellent and I have no desire now to use windows phones anymore. Not for the time being anyway, and the whole tiles thing with the new WP7 doesn't appeal to me.
I hated the old windows phones. Slow, lag, so many menus to search through. But I played a little with a windows 7 phone, and I liked it allot. It still has a bit more tweaking to do, but I wish my Evo 3d scrolled as smooth as windows 7. Fast and easy to use. Looks really well done. It is something I will keep my eye on in the future.
Would this open doors for having a WP7 mango running on our beloved SGSII? I am loving the whole metro ui, and simulated a lot with different apps now, but it is not the same. I prefer having two OSes on my mobile instead of having 2 phones. Willing to help DEVS taking on this project
Cheerios
I did try WP7 on my HD2 when it first became available, but wasn't impressed. It looked like it had promise but just wasn't delivering at the time. I'd like to see where it's gone now, nearly a year later, so I'd be very interested in trying this out. I'm just not going to hold my breath while waiting for this to ever become available on the S2.
Neither am I, chances are that the more expensive option will be the only one. I keep reading that there is a difference in BT profiles, but I am uncertain that this is a constraint or not?

At long last, we are excited to share with you pictures of the first real prototype that we will be bringing with us to Chicago on Wednesday to present to Motorola and Verizon! Keep in mind that this is merely an engineering sample and improvements will continue to be made (eg. The final product will have a much better finish).

Really nice, good luck.
Why wouldn't you just make it a slider than pulls down? Making it come down at an angle like that will make the phone impossible to use while holding in two hands. I get the fact that it works like a dock with a built in keyboard, but typing on that is going to be awful if it's on a table like that. The earlier renders of a keyboard that slides straight down seem like a much better idea.
That being said, thank you so much for working on this mod! Really miss having a physical keyboard for gaming!
Looks awesome! Keep going, you are on to something great

I believe the "tilting" is optional. the keyboard does slide down, and can be adjusted at an angle, as pictured.
Awesome now if we can just get mod packs working in custom ROMs all will be grand
FWIW, I'm just a fan spreading the word. @chenliangchen is the one making the keyboard mod. I've been missing my HTC Touch Pro2 (which dual booted android alongside the stock winmo thanks to XDA) for a LONG time. I actually still have it. It's not super usable 8 years later, but it is a thing of beauty.
I actually found that when I had the Nokia N97 the slide & tilt screen was incredibly nice as you could hold it at a more comfortable angle, like a laptop. We'll have to see how the balance of the phone is, of course, once the mod is released but I think that will work rather nicely.
I loved the tilt on my Touch Pro2. Not only did it make it easier to reduce glare when typing, but it was a built-in multimedia stand and turned my TP2 into the best ereader I've ever used (see sig link for details). Since then I've been using a flygrip to get some of the benefits I got misusing my old tilting hinge, but I would love to get back to book form.
It's at 94% with 4 days remaining. If you want a keyboard, now's your chance to help make it happen.

People can still buy in. I did recently. Development is still going strong and I can't wait to try it out. Hopefully in July!
