Does SPL/HSPL Affect Data Performance? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hey folks... Ever since I got my HD2 a couple months ago, I've been trying to troubleshoot why my data speeds never exceed 800kb/s, despite the "h" always showing at the top of the screen.
I only used WinMO 6.5 for about a week before moving over to SD Android. While using SD Android, I tried many different ROM/radio combos, as well as modified build.prop files. No matter what I did, my speeds were always topped out at 700-800kb/s.
I contacted T-Mobile (U.S.), and explained my data performance. They said service in my area was fine, and there was no problem on their end. They even had me check to ensure I had a newer SIM card.
I'm now running Windows Phone 7, and actually saw a decrease in speeds down to 500kb/s.
Is there any way that HSPL/SPL are impacting this performance?
Its both puzzling and frustrating when other TMOUS users are getting 2-plus mb/s data speeds.

Short answer - no. It's got absolutely nothing to do with it. It literally starts your OS and nothing more.

Oh well. Thought I'd ask.
I've tried everything else...
Its almost like the HSDPA never got switched on here...

Unfortunately, you're very unlikely to get a data provider that actually says "Yeah, our network's just a bit crap." Besides, there's all sorts of unknowns that can affect your signal strength, all of which are external to the phone.
I generally have a poor signal at home. I'm lucky if it ever says 3G, never mind HSPA. I just have wifi on all the time instead.

Not another 3G/EDGE issue

well let me start off by saying that I have read all of the threads from day one about the fluctuation issues but have never yet experienced it myself, until today.
I have never had the issue before but today when I woke up I turned on my phone after its charge, i have never turned it off during a charge before, and I am experiencing this problem now.
My question is, is it time to root and flash a new radio to the N1? I have put off rooting because I havent had a reason to yet.
Thanks in advance for the input.
Ps. i am not new to rooting so I aint scureedddd.
oopsieee wrong section, can a mod please move this to either General or Q&A!
thanks

thanks for moving mindfrost, i had a brainfart lol.
anyone with input? i'd much appreciate it. The fluctuation is still going on but its not such a big deal because I am usually on wifi. Should I just wait for a new OTA from google?

I don't see how these things could in any way be related...Who is your carrier? You may want to contact them and see if they are having issues with a local tower or have a tower out so are now experiencing a weaker 3G signal and thus bouncing.
I am on T-Mobile, trust me I was just as confused. I know that turning off a device while charging "shouldn't" have anything to do with fluctuating signal thats the only thing I did.

have you tried another radio (software) version? what version are you using now?
i am on ere27
my radio is 4.03.00.21_2
he's on stock too...I only have this problem when holding the phone. Herd its normal.
I just started experiencing the 3g problem too. Didn't have this problem before. Completely stock (unrooted) with the OTA update. I thought it could just be the weather or some temporary maintenance but I've been experiencing it for about 3 days now.
Southern California area.
This better get fixed, I bought this phone the day it came out.
This is totally wierd, I have had no problems whatsoever signal wise with my nexus. Actually I have had a significant increase in quality and signal coming from a Mytouch3G. I have none of the problems at all that are described with signal, screen or anything. Got lucky I guess.
@pongalong - thats about the same time I have been experiencing the problem. Its def not the weather here because it has been beautiful the past week, highs in the 70's but in Feb we had a colossal snow storm which knocked power out and I had great signal then, its so odd.
@sinister - I didnt have any problems whatsoever until about two days ago.
Matter the towers are being worked on... one day my signal was horrid only the next day to find out the upgraded the towers where I live....
Tmobiles great here in portland oregon..
Went about 45 miles out of my area and the problem seemed to disappear (although it seemed to be around when I was indoors - probably just due to interference). Hopefully they're just doing some work in my area like mentioned above.
Any improvement or updates from the OP?
Hopefully T-Mo is almost ready for 21Mb/s.
It seems to have somewhat went away..it still fluctuates but only where I am below 2 bars of 3g. I'm getting used to just switching to 2g only in low 3g areas. Then I get full edge usually. Kinda weird but ill just wait for an update I guess.

Flaky connections

Ever since the last OTA update I have had issues with data connections, and the signal itself seems to drop randomly. I am less than 2 miles from the tower, and on my Galaxy Tab the signal is nice and steady. On the Evo, sometimes I have not only no 3G but not even slower than heck connection (no 4G where I am staying at the moment.)
I've reloaded with no change in behavior. I am completely stock, and unrooted. Revision 003 device in case that matters.
Thanks...
I started a thread on this last week, what worked for me was downgrading the radio to the second latest instead of the latest. Haven't had that issue since. Ymmv though

It's a sprint thing. Im rooted with older version of fresh and yes, recently the data connection has just dropped. Browser sits idle and I get impatient. Claims I've read come from theories that sprint is configuring network for both data and voice at same time. Svdo. So I dunno, we'll see what pans out.

It's also a sprint thing. My speeds are the same, but at least I get a consistent data signal now - before I downgraded, my evdo signal would just disappear for a minute or two periodically before coming back. It hasn't happened at all since I downgraded my radio.

this thread, but make sure you let it go for a while when flashing - DON'T PULL THE BATTERY. It may take a long time to fully flash, but don't get impatient and pull the battery, people have bricked their phones doing that. just let it do it's thing. There should be additional instructions in that thread if you've never flashed a radio before and the radio that worked best for me was EVO_Radio_2.15.00.09.01.
Great. I'll try. I don't mind mucking with PCs since I work with computers for a living, but when it comes to my phone I'm really careful- especially since I'm job hunting these days. Can't afford to brick the phone, but this is a bit difficult since it is often unwilling to connect.

[Q] Signal strength drops and semi-random reboots?

Okay, here's my problem. I've got my Samsung Epic up and running (finally), but for two annoying bugs: or it might be one bug with two parts.
One, the signal strength "wobbles" a lot, going from no bars (but still holding service) to almost full bars. I assumed at first that this is just a quirk of the preferred tower configuration around my home.
Part two is more annoying. Sometimes it will, apparently somewhat randomly, lose all signal, which prompts the phone to reboot. Actually it's not a TRUE reboot, it's just the half-reboot that happens when the Android shell crashes: return to boot animation, then reload everything. Often, it'll do this several times in a row. It was doing it horribly when I was running the AOSP version 4 ROM, so I flashed back to a semi-stock configuration (stock ROM plus ClockworkMod). But it's still doing it. Modem version is EC05, and I'm running on a Verizon MVNO. Can anyone offer suggestions?
Try updating your modem to the EI22 released modem and get on an EI22 ROM.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah, EI22 fixes most of the signal dropouts for me. Just update your modem.
On EH17 my bars would randomly go to 0 and data would drop out even though I'm parked on a repeater here at work, getting -76db signal (that's really, really good).
i just got a new (or probably refurb) phone from best buy after my original broke. (thank you black tie) and this new stock phone does this same stuff you are describing. this phone sucks! reboots, lock ups, bluetooth doesnt work, keyboard skips.. .what a joke.
so should i call sprint and try to get something other than an epic or go to best buy and have them order me another one? any suggestions?
Well, following the advice upthread I've gone ahead and installed the stock EI22 update for the Epic. We'll see how it turns out.

Black Tie is supposed to give you new phones. Keyboard skips are Samsung's error. Flash a custom ROM with the fixes implemented by the DEVs here.
Followup: after flashing the Sprint stock EI22 ROM, I'm still getting wacky signal strength fluctuations, but it's stopped resetting, which makes me happy. I'd be happier if I could get it to stick with the strong signal, but I'll live.
Try using an app like Network Info or Tasker to see if your phone is hopping towers while the signal is fluctuating. Maybe a PRL update will help.

Yes it should. Unfortunately the keyboard skips have yet to be addressed by Samsung. There is a maintenance update being worked on. Some people are still getting reboots with the new OTA for Gingerbread but not many. So maybe that will be addressed as well as the keyboard skips.

I'll try those--I was trying to use CellID Info for that purpose, but it hasn't reflected any changes at all between high signal and low signal. So far Network Info II isn't either, but we'll see. I did try a PRL update the other night, to no avail.

That's possible. God knows I'm out in the middle of nowhere, so quality of service probably isn't a high priority. I haven't seen it reflected in other Verizon devices I've looked at the last couple days, but then I haven't exactly been looking at them that closely.
My signal does seem a lot more consistent today--right now I'm stuck at 2-3 out of 6 bars, but it's holding that constantly with very little variation, less even than I would think was normal. Maybe it was a network problem after all and not just my device. That would be nice.
Edit: Looks like I spoke a little too soon, as I just had one complete signal dropout. But it's still better than it was.
That could be when they just swapped out amplifiers at the tower that was giving you trouble. Also it seems Sprint service is subject to a lot of dead zones. I got a big dead spot in my house.

I'm not on Sprint, it's flashed to a Verizon MVNO, so I'm on VZW towers.
Strangely, I've seen my AT&T Android phone lose signal too a couple times today--which is bizarre, because it almost never does that. AT&T around here is only 2G, and slow 2G at that, but the signal is very reliable. Just enough to make me wonder if something weird is going on locally.
In case anyone's still interested in this: it's still doing it, so it's pretty clearly the phone. However when I took it into a building where there's normally poor signal, it stopped doing it and held the stronger signal. Is it possible that because this is a Sprint radio, it's trying to default to 1900 MHz, instead of the stronger 850 signal?

Weirdest issue ever

If someone can find a solution to this, seriously, you're a master.
I was running CM build from the 6 January (stock kernel). And suddenly, during the afternoon, my data started to be slow.
Here I have a contract for 7.2mbps. I'm usually arround 6.5-7.2mpbs. Never really goes down 5mbps. So I ran a speed test. I was at 0.1mbps. I thought "this should be a little problem, nothing to worry about". I was wrong, so wrong. After that I flashed the CM build from today.
Hours later, after many speedtest, I was still at 0.1mbps and I started to think that this is really weird. So I phoned to my network and they told me there's no network problem at all where I live (should be true, no friends asked me about this).
So, obviously, I flashed another ROM, AOKP. Still ultra slow data. I flashed Paranoid Android, still super slow data.
I took off my SIM carte and I put it on my old HTC Sensation. Guess what, data was working perfectly. At this point I started to get crazy lol.
Maybe some corrupted data ? Let's flash the factory.img
I flashed via fastboot the factory.img, ran a speed test.... STILL SUPER SLOW DATA.
I should add that we don't have any data-cap here (and the Sensation proved it).
I thought, maybe the 3G is hardware broken ? No. I'm still seeing H+ and 3G on my status bar. More weird stuff ? alright ! Ping is excellent (about 40ms) and upload speed... is like it always been, arround 1mbps (that's the number in my contract too).
So now, i'm completely lost (and tired, it's 2am).
If someone, whatever the idea is, could help me, it would be awesome.

Try re-registering onto your mobile network. Or try registering manually instead.
I had a weird issue where my phone would switch to cdma on its own. try *#*#4636#*#* and playing around with settings there.
Try flashing back stock and factory reset.
Make sure your sim card tray is fully inserted.
Pray to the HSDPA Gods to give you your speed back.

You're holding it wrong. Hold it in a different way.

If you've flashed other roms, then it's obviously not a software issue, maybe there's work on your local mast. Is the speed difference only in the speedtest app, or do you notice it in normal usage?
So later yesterday I called the customer service. They confirmed that they have no network issue at all.
It started at 16:00 pm and yesterday night, at 3:00 am (when I was about to sleep, finally ) still ultra slow data speed.
I woke up this morning at 7:00 am, tried again a test, still slow data speed.
So I went to my office, I was in at 8:00 am and I ran a test again and... BOOM ! 6.8mbps ! And it works now without any problem.
Morality : Don't miss work. lol
But to be honnest, I really don't understand what happened. I have no clue what this can be. Anyway, it works now and I hope it won't happen again.
Btw, big thanks to everyone who answered, we have some great people here

[Q] Switching between 3G and H is such an annoyance... Any help?

I've read up on this and understand it is supposed to be normal, but man does it make my phone so much worse. Every single time a page loads it has to switch from 3G to H. My reception seems like it sucks so bad because of this. Sometimes it doesn't switch. I get good bars everywhere I go, but it feels like I have terrible reception.
I've never understood radios and such. I'm rooted with the stock rom. Would this be better if I tried cyanogenmod with a different radio? There has to be a fix for this issue.
If you solve this for me, I'll kiss you through the internet.
I don't think kissing anyone over the internet would make them want to help you any more
Its how the phone works, its supposed to switch to 3G to H. H comes on when data is more active.

I knew the bars are for phone calls, but I'm in the city of Chicago and have a hard time believing my data is as bad as it seems. I'll have plenty of times where it shows 3G connection and doesn't switch to H, therefore no data comes through. I've had plenty of times where I didn't believe I wasn't getting data, so I reset my phone and sure enough - data!
I do believe something could be wrong with my specific phone. I might need to try a full reset or flash cyanogenmod. I just didn't want to do that. Especially without checking with you genius's beforehand!

The radio is .48.. Baseband is Radio. You can go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227 and try out other radio to see if you get better reception.

I can do that, but I'll first have to figure out how to do it. For some reason my drivers say they don't work and it won't let me flash clockwork mod. I was going to make another post about it after I figured this out. Do you think radio could be the issue?
Also, I am on Tmobile, but I thought LTE didn't really work since it was ATT band 4 or something and only very specific areas had it?

Well, I just found out my APN was the one used when you are on LTE. I changed it to the non LTE version and will test over the next few days. If that was my problem, I'm going to be upset at the Tmobile lady who put in that info.
Please do let us know if it's any better after using the epc APN.
If you flash to the .33 radio, the LTE will turn on and it's very good at holding a data connection. It's just when it's not available and my phone connects to hspa+. I have similar problems as you. Well, I did my commute this morning and there really was no change. It could be a combination of poor data reception areas and slow switching. I'd like to try to flash a new radio, but I don't know how. I can start a new thread about this, but I'll at least mention my problem here. I installed the Nexus 4 Toolkit and went through all the steps to make sure the drivers were installed correctly and such. I did this a long time ago when I rooted the phone. But something is wrong and it doesn't let me flash clockworkmod. It tells me to go through the steps again, which I have tried.
Is there a way to flash a new radio without clockwordmod?

Lte is amazing in Chicago but not as strong in Chicagoland. However, hspa+ is garbage in Chicago but better in Chicago land.
As for cwm, I prefer twrp. You can just download goo manager from the app store and it will install twrp for you. As far as I know you need to use a custom Rom that supports the older radios or else your calling might mess up. I use aokp.

I actually tried that a few weeks ago, before I knew what I was doing. I wasn't able to flash it because I didn't have a custom recovery. I'm glad I went to CyanogenMod though. It seems to be faster and there are little things that make it better than stock.

Yeah I was running paranoid android for awhile, currently running stock for the 4.3 update, contemplating cm 10.2 when that gets solid or PA again once they get everything sorted out from the 4.3 hijinks.

I didn't think it would be worth it to switch, but it is. Stock is great, but CM is better. I haven't used paranoid android.

Yeah CM has a lot of nice additions, Paranoid is pretty slick...been a fan of that one on multiple devices. It's built around swapping ui dpi...so you can set your phone to act like a phablet or tablet per app...ie...make gmail look like it does on your tablet on your phone. Let's you drop out the soft keys and replace them with a pop up slide wheel/etc and has a lot of the AOSP and CM features like the quick notification toggles etc.
