I'm planning on buying a used HD2 off craigslist and I do not expect it to come with any warranty. I read some threads about the HD2 overheating and the touchscreens dying. Is this still a big problem?
Is there a way I can tell if the phone is a newer revision with less problems?

Look at the reset button.
If it's red, you're in for some deep ****.
If it's yellow, all is clear
The ones with red reset buttons had some quality control issues.

Lol thanks. If it's NOT red are there any hardware problems at all? Does this apply to T-Mobile USA HD2's? Also, is there a way I can look up the warranty and past HTC repairs using the IMEI or serial numbers?

I wouldn't say I'm offended, but I would say that the statement is shortsighted and uneducated.
I've had my HD2 since early November 2009, when they first came out, and I'm still using the same device with NO hardware problems.
Blanket statements like that should always be utterly ignored.
Unfortunately, no-one can tell you that your device will or will not have hardware issues. Some will and some won't is the only true statement that can be made.
I haven't seen a Hd2 without a red reset button. But I have tmo. Just look it over and make sure everything works and it hasn't been abused.

Well, you know what? Call it what you want. Be offended by it, call Tue response "shortsighted and uneducated". Whatever. I talk from experience. I had a red reset button HD2 and I had to return it not once, not twice, but FOUR TIMES. They ALL died in one way or another, be it the touchscreen, the thing not turning on, or it freezing to bloody death. The fifth time, I got a yellow reset button HD2 and I'm still using it to this day. No problems whatsoever that atlre hardware related.
(/rant over)
sorry, for jacking your thread. but, should I be worried if the void stick that covered a screw has been torn. I got it off ebay. It's working 100%, so I'm guessing it was repaired or something.

You're wrong. You had hardware problems, and I feel for you, but to say that everyone with a red reset button will have problems IS "short-sighted and uneducated".
You're clearly basing your comment on your limited experiences, albeit bad (no-one is questioning that), and not the experiences of the hundreds of thousands of HD2 users.
Okay, the phrase "short-sighted and uneducated" will cause offense, but it was not intended to do so. It's just how your post comes across.
Nonetheless, my post still stands and I still think you're talking from a limited and biased point of view that will not get backed up by many other users.
Hmm strange as far I can have information from htc have only the htc HD2 T-Mous devices the yellow reset button and the regular HD2 a red button.
If I follow the logical here this would mean that 75% of the HD2 Devices ar bad? hmm not convinced.

There were different "series" of TMOUS HD2s. AFAIK the early ones had yellow buttons and later ones had red buttons - I could be wrong about that though.
Some information I gathered on the yellow/red button thing. So it isn't just me I see.

Nope, those are the only two versions you'll find. The initial red-buttoned batch ran out very shortly after you bought yours, and the ones with the yellow have been around ever since. There's not any conclusive evidence, but it's generally accepted that the ones with the red button seem to have a higher occurence of mysterious misbehavior. The only suggestion I have is to make sure you're at least running the updated T-Mobile ROM...your brother might have gotten it on his phone from the factory, but yours wouldn't have it by default.

But a month later after i bought mines , my brother bought his . I look at the reset button on both of ours and i see that mines is red and his is yellow! I was wondering what exactly could that mean because my phone freezes way much more than his! And if anyone might have any information if there happens to be a different color reset button like green for example . Thanks for all the support by the way, very helpful .

Q1-I JUST GOT A NEW HD2, AND MY RESET BUTTON IS A DIFFERENT COLOR!!!
A-Yep, hopefully it's yellow. The reset button is widely believed to be a hardware revision giveaway, IE, depending on the color is what revision of the device you have. So far 2 different colors are in circulation that we know of, those being RED and YELLOW. The HD2's that have red reset buttons seem to be revision ones, or based off of the Euro hardware, and seem to be more flaky when it comes to touchscreen quality and overall stability. For whatever reason, HD2's with red buttons seem to have touchscreens, mainly the digitizers that are more prone to failure. The second revision HD2's seem to all have yellow reset buttons and as far as we know these are the only ones being produced as of late. Yellow button models seem to be more stable hardware wise, and use a completely different motherboard and touchscreen/digitizer assembly.

Anyway I'm not surprized I bought it end of 2009... so now I will have hardware issues...
I bough the HD when launched, the HD2 when launched... none has never have an issue. It's difficult to predict hardware failure.
It's always possible, it's just a question of luck. HD2 has been launched for a long time now. It's a good and reliable device. There's not a lot of complains, that's a good proof!
Anyway, as with everything you may have problems. That's why warranty was invented.

And all you have proven is nothing.
You have one quote saying the person bought a 'yellow' a month before a 'red' and another saying that the 'reds' were the 1st version and 'yellows' were 2nd editions. Technically the TMOUS phones are all at least 2nd gereation HD2, because the European HD2 (with the lower memory) was the 1st generation model.
A quote saying someone guessed that 'yellows' were better.
Just for a bit of research, I flipped a £1 coin ten times and it landed 8 times on tails and a £2 ten times at it landed only 3 times on tails. Therefore my advice to anyone flipping a coin: if the coin is a £1 then shout 'tails' and if the coin is a £2 then shout 'heads'. I am informed that the £1 coin was developed before the £2 coin.
This research has been funded by those good folk at Acme.

You are correct that you didn't say you were trying to prove anything. So you normally post a list of quotes for no apparent reason?
I didn't start the game with an unproven statement.
However it would be interesting to see if there was an actual hardware problem with the red button compared to the yellow button 1024LEO. Something along the lines of:
Do you have, or have you had, a HD2 (1024MB ROM) and has met one of the four conditions:
It has a Yellow reset button and has no hardware faults.
It has a Yellow reset button and has had hardware faults.
It ihas a Red reset button and has no hardware faults.
It ihas a Red reset button and has had hardware faults.

Sorry to say that I recently went from a wizard (which I've had for 18 months) to a hermes...disappointed doesn't even begin to describe my experience.
I had the 'brick' as I've come to call it, 3 days and already it's deceased.
Started getting the 'phantom taps' and now no TS at all.
Rebooted a dozen times and it just wont get past the screen alignment...in fact if you sit and watch it does it itself!
I even know what the issue is as it's been reported in the past but you'd think HTC would've sorted it by now.
HTC are palming off shonky goods as cutting edge.....really disapointed.
Did you flash a custom ROM onto it? Is it a hardware problem? In any case, it's covered by a warranty, you probably just got a defective unit. IMO, the upgrade from my wizard to hermes was a HUGE difference in performance and I'd never go back.
hardware related
Its hardware related....as the device gets warm (probably room temperature!) the screen expands and the TS membrane is pinched. All kinds of fun ensues!
There's no warranty on it..so it wont be going back.
Chalk another one up to experience.
if you have no warranty then you prob didn't pay much and you prob didn't get a new unit, and you prob didn't even get from a reputable place....so buyer beware...if the deal was to good to be true it prob was and did you ever think to ask yourself why the unit was for sale in the first place.
Assume a lot dontcha
It's brand new...from a friend who upgraded almost immediately to a HTC Touch.
You are correct though - didn't cost me a bean - shame my wizard's already gone....

If it's brand new from a friend, why not have him simply return the unit as defective??? Besides, just because you aren't the original buyer doesn't mean there is no warranty...
I have both a Wizard and a Hermes. Apart from the Wizard feeling like it is more rugged when it's in your hand, the Hermes is superior in every other way. And when you load WM6 onto the Hermes, it just blows the Wizard away completely.
If you know enough about this device to know that the innards are "expanding" and that something is being pinched by this, it sounds like you've taken it apart.
You're clearly not telling us the whole story in any case. If you ever want real advice for fixing your Hermes instead of just venting and not telling us what you've done to it to cause these problems, a lot of people here will be happy to help you.
BTW, I've found that doing a soft reset after charging it does a lot for any heat problems if this is truly the only problem you're having.
...several screen alignment "fixes" available on this website...
Lay off the guy
Look folks, the 'phantom tap' is a known and documented hardware issue with Hermes and has nothing to do with where/how/when/why the unit was acquired, nor for how much. Wise up (and shut up if you don't know what you're talking about).
To the OP: Don't give up so easily. In my experience HTC tracks the warranty by serial number. Call them and insist on an RMA. I was successful in getting one fixed free of charge. And guess what... I bought it on ebaY, and the warranty seal had been broken!
Btw, it's not the touch screen. Been there, replaced it, didn't fix it.
Thanks vp3G

As it turns out the device was still under warranty and it's been returned...just waiting for it to come back!
Funnily enough when I had it the first time, the rom I put on it was your 'Black Satin'! Nice ROM, particularly the file explorer replacement!
Personally I didn't see much in the way of difference between the hermes and the wizard....but I did have it only for three days.
When I get it back I and test it out a bit more, I will gladly eat my words if it out performs the old wizard.
Anyway, I wasn't slating the hermes in itself..many of my friends have one p )..it was HTC themselves for still selling devices to consumers with a known fault.

HTC has impressed me, especially lately as they are trying to "redesign" the interface for windows mobile to make it actually usable.
BMWs are incredibly bad cars for the price they are sold for.

aaah....I thought it was your rom because of the nifty splash screens!
I was considering getting a kaiser but I think I will play it safe and wait until it's been 'in the field' for a while...
See you later,
Andy.
I've noticed recently the backlight on my HD2 seems to have suffered some sort of malfunction or something. Might be a bit of a strong way of describing it perhaps.
Basically imagine if you have a blank white screen/image showing on the phone, there's a couple of bits on it that always stay in the same place where the brightness is not the same as the rest. I'm certain it's only been like this recently but no idea why.
You can only really notice it with very pale or bits of white on the screen but am wondering:
1 - if anyone else has this,
2 - how it's happened,
3 - anything I can do about it,
In particular if it's a fault with the phone (as I'm certain the phone has never been knocked and it definitely has never been dropped or pressed hard etc), is this something I could get done under warrantee.
If it is, can I get it fixed on warrantee even with no receipt since I bought it on Ebay? Every single HD2 is still in its warrantee period so I hope they could do.
Thanks!
I have the same, they advised me to contact support, but i kinda neglected it for the time being.
I have the same kind of spot in the middle of my screen, i only really see it when the screen is white, annoying tho :/
I dont like the idea of having to send the phone out and missing it for a few weeks :'(
I had the same problem on my device so I called HTC and they picked it up, repaired it and sent it back. Well they sorted out this particular problem (by replacing the LCD panel) but, alas, created few more. The buttons were not placed properly, the body was damaged and etc. So Angry and Disappointed Me called them up and they picked it up again. This time they replaced the whole unit (the actual body if I am not mistaken) and sent it back. Finally I was glad to have my phone back after two weeks.
Funny enough most of the HTC employees that I spoke to had very poor English. And I spoke with quiet a few of them. Luckily I am talented at mimicking broken English and didn't have much problem getting my message across. I'd imagine for most people it should be very difficult to explain their problem and arrange repairs.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible to do this without a sales receipt and still not have to pay? I don't think I should have to pay since it's not very old at all but I can't prove it's actually my phone I guess.
Did you just contact them via the XDA website or something?
I got the same issue. Most annoying when reading long emails or articles. I thought about sending it in for repair but I have voided my warranty already and don't want to be missing my hd2 for a couple weeks and get hit with a massive bill. I think it has something to do with the layers in the LCD not being completely flat. But I havent got that far in my explorations of this phone, maybe I will on my next trip.
You should contact HTC support by calling at the number for your country that you can find from the HTC website.
They can do everything with the phone's serial no. At least that's how it worked for my Kaiser I got on ebay too when I had a prob with it.

I am also seeing this on my HD2. It is very faint and only really noticeable on white screens. Once you know it is there though you can't help but keep looking for it
To be honest I can put up with it as most of the time you can't actually see it, for example I can't see it now due to the keyboard being up.
I'd be interested to know if anyone in the UK sends their phone off for repair as I might do the same. I can't be without my phone though, it would be like loosing my arm!

I have a small crack on the glass of my HD2 as well between the bottom of the phone and the power / end call key. It looks like a small hair stuck under the button Not sure if they would replace the glass for me as well if I sent it off?
I got my phone from O2 so I'm wondering if I'd have to go to O2 for repair or direct to HTC, maybe I could do both
Anyway, for now I think I'll refrain from sending it off unless it really starts annoying me. A bit of a pain though
I've emailed HTC as well to ask about this.....
I thought folks would find this interesting, to say the least.
There has been a lot of rumor and theorizing about the infamous "Yellow Reset Button" believed by some to signify a new run of phones, supposedly marking the phones as after the first 50k production units. This may be entirely true, partially true, or a complete fabrication, elevated to the status of urban legend, right up there with "It is illegal to kill a Praying Mantis, and you will get a $50 fine if you do, LOL! (You won't trust me on THAT at least.)
So it was with some excitement that I received a "Yellow Button Special" as my 4th warranty refurb. Let's just say that it did not quite life up to the hype, and was the absolute worst as far as lock ups, and I had 3 previous ones to compare it with. Part of the reason I put this in the Energy Forum was a Tweet that our esteemed chef put out about 5-6 weeks ago, saying that he had a yellow reset button model and was experiencing nolockups. That's quite a claim to make for ANY Windows Mobile handset, but I do not doubt his observation. I do believe it was probably early in the testing of said phone, and that he could not have kept such a sparkling record going indefinitely.
So, by way of a long story, I come to the blasted point, LOL! Anyone who haunts this forum knows my posts tend to be... let's say verbose! Nevertheless, attached are two pictures of the Part Number for two phones, both refurbs, and both from T-Mobile Warranty Support. Called and pleased my case, whereupon T-Mobile agreed to send me handset #5 - yep. This is my fifth T-Mobile HTC HD2 Phone.
And? Its GREAT! It works better than any other one I have had, in particular the Bluetooth A2DP works to my stereo headset without cutting out. I have had no lockups in over a full weeks use, with multiple ROMs flashed to it. Display is perfect, sensitive (I know thats driver, not hardware related, but just sayin. I have put it through a pretty vigorous set of daily use testing, and it has been beautiful.
Now for the clincher, and it's nothing to do with a "Yellow Reset Button". If you must know it DOES have a yellow button, BUT: It also has a different part number
Check the attached pics, which I covered my IMEI and my S/N (paranoia, no other reason, he he)
I have checked Serial/IMEI and Part Numbers on each refurb they sent, and all have had the exact same part number. Until now, that is:
The old one reads: xxxxx001-00 B
The new one reads:xxxxx001-01 XB
What does this mean? As an expert witness for the prosecution I will TELL YOU! The answer is: I haven't a clue what it means, or if it means ANYTHING. I do know that it is significant, and to me, a different Part Number means a revision. What revision, and even if its a GOOD revision remains open to speculation. I prefer to think I have "One of the new, GOOD ones", LOL. But seriously I don't know. It would be interesting if anyone cares to track these and see what we can learn, if if anyone on the forum actually KNOWS what the bumped up part # signifies. Anyone have any info?
For me, i think the rumour that they changed the button to yellow because america expects small red dots to be water indicators holds more of a ring of truth than a build version marker. I just think it coincided with a second surge in production.
hmm...interesting...are you referring only to TMOUS version or European one as well. My HD2 for instance is European and P/N reads 02-00 C
Since november Ive only ever had one entirely solid and dependable HD2, it has a p/n ending in 039-00.
im quite curious to see how these numbers reflect on the time/location of production....
What are folks doing to their HD2 to have multiple ones?
I have the TMO launch HD2 and its fine. I have updated the unit to the TMO US firmware and its fine. The only problem I had, which is annoying and I wish someone could help me fix this, is that with Facebook V1.2, it doesnt retain my credentials. regardless if I click save. I am investigating, but if someone knows how to fix this, please advise.
Otherwise, the unit is fine.

Hey hey XDA. Ive been lurking for a good year or two and have never really had a need to post, but I felt it might be useful to share my experiences with the Omnia7. I got it almost after launch in the UK and was...slightly unimpressed. My love for the handset grew, however the technical issues also started to swell. Firstly I experienced the unresponsive home button issue and had the handset replaced twice due to screen issues. Secondly, the frame started to crack recently and trust me, I dont do anything with my handset to cause it to crack...nor do I bash it around causing the paint to flake off!a
Anyway, the final straw was yesterdays 'black screen of death'. I was using it as normal and put it in my pocket after class. I am walking home and go to check to the time only to find that it wouldnt respond. This is followed by a random reboot followed by a series of white lines flashing across the top of the screen...followed again by a load of pink and green dots appearing and disappearing. The phone reboots again and then works...only to repeat again. Add to this an OS which has yet to be given any sort of new lease of life beyond a bit of copy and paste...well...im saddened.
Orange were kind enough to send another one today but having reviewed my options, im afraid to say im jumping ship back to Android. I was under the impression that the Omnia 7 was a well built handset with a solid OS...but that doesnt seem to be the case. That or im incredibly unlucky. :/ Phone is heading straight to Amazon Marketplace in its shiny new packaging!
Anyway, thanks for providing lurker over here with some amazing advice. Just my two cents! Adios.
Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you.
How much are you selling it for?

Believe me, you ARE incredibly unlucky. Most people agree this is the best WP7 out there and it's running very smoothly.

Yeah it sucks that ive had zero luck with it. On a brighter note, im finally investing in an HD2 purely so I can get back to tinkering...so I might end up back with WP7, albeit in a modded form!
Ive listed it for £300 GBP. Its a bit less than what most people are selling them for however I want to sell quickly in order to get another phone. Im currently using a ghetto as all hell nokia and it pains me to use it :/

Sorry, but see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929460
The unresponsive issue is something people are confused about and think it's a handset problem. It's not, it's not responsive for a reason and that's when the sensor is covered! See the thread.
As for the other issues, I agree, that's crap luck by the sounds of it.
And dude, I agree with the poor effort from Microsoft regarding updates and copy and paste. I mean it's like they have ignored the competition and the things people really need on their devices. Copy and paste shouldn't be an update, it should of been there in the first place!
But with time, I believe WP7 will stand strong.
I bought a HD2 off of ebay, and just got it today. I was so happy to get this one after the other broke.
But this one is seriously weird! It's got a resistive touchscreen, the buttons are smaller & compact, and the batter compartment is completely different.
I thought this might be a prototype version, but the back metal section seems like the genuine thing, except its black. Even the packaging looks genuine, except the buttons show up a bit smaller.
Anyone have any clue where this came from?

Are you sure it is not a Chinese clone? What does the bootloader say when starting up?
No bootloader comes up, when trying to access spl display (the tri-colour thing), it shows up calibrating, and if I press the vol-up key instead of the down, it shows up as "Downloading".
The packaging is resoundingly similar to the real thing, except that it shows the button layout of this fake phone.
I also forgot to mention that this one does not even have a home button.
Found another guy who seems to have gotten the same one as me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978588
and, don't buy this or anything that looks like this on ebay:

you sir, have just bought a chinese clone!
Yh, and I was so looking forward to my second HD2 and sticking android on it again. =|
I'd have pity for you if the clone would of at least had 5 buttons on the front......
it's clearly missing the "home" button, the biggest dead give away I've seen to date. Considering you've already owned a real HD2 before hand one would think you'd catch that right off the bat.
Unless of course you were presented with "real" HD2 shots under the ebay listing..... in which case i would just call him out as a fraud and file a complaint.
The youtube video from the thread you listed was quite compelling... looked pretty real in the video, outer appearance anyway, it had 5 buttons....
Yh, I feel pretty stupid, but the screenshot was too reflective to make out all of the buttons properly, and seeing how the seller had 100% feedback, and put all of the details from the real thing, I couldn't make it out as being a fake.

lodge a complaint....
Yes and the sim/sd card positions are totaly different to the EU version
Looks good for the price, if you did not know any better and were happy with win mo
Even worse it states in the specs as well as in the system info picture that it only has 256M internal memory!!!!! And to top it off the brand in the spec sheet says it is a "HHH"
That really sucks, hopefully you can return it and get your money back.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App

I hate winmo! No offence to those that like it, but I just hate it, and I bought it from ebay - it cost the same as 2nd hand HD2's cost nowadays.
I've contacted the seller, and am awaiting reply before taking applying for dispute.
This phone is basically a TG01, but without any alpha android roms for it.
