Well, I sent in my HD2 after having it for about a month because the touchscreen no longer worked. However they want $317.43 to replace the main board as I installed 'illegal' software on it (i.e., another ROM). They state because I did that, it is out of warranty and they wont cover the screen, even though they are unrelated.
Any thoughts on how to re-coup some money here? I've already paid $700 or so for the damn phone.
Anyone want an HD2 in this condition for a couple of hundred? It has nary a scratch on it. I freaking carried it in tissue paper for the month.
Any suggests? Please?
get it returned to you, flash stock rom from sd to remove hspl, (no need for touchscreen to do that) return it under warranty. Total loss? one set of shipping.

The problem with that is that the phone has the software lock on it. I could not unlock it to do that.
Oh, and they charge you a triage fee of $38.oo to look at it.

you dont need to boot the phone. put an sd card in it with the leoimg.nbh stock rom file on it, turn on phone holding voldown till it gets to bootloader, phone should see the nbh image and flash the rom, and remove the hspl at the same time.
Ask them to send the phone back, unlock it, flash back to stock ROM with stock SPL and hard reset and send it again. Job done

well there is a little hole in the back of the device pretty close to the soft reset button...anyways that button says WARRANTY and if its void they will press that little "button" in and your warranty will be void.
That's a good point - anyone had their HD2 come back as void?

Damn, so if it comes back like that, this is a total loss, huh? Can i sell it for parts?
still worth getting it returned without paying for it fixing, i would think, because that sticker is a screw cover, theres gotta be a chance they simply plugged it into a , erm, master computer, which showed hspl and rejected it before anyone even took the battery cover up.
plus of course its only the screen thats dodgy, can get that fixed far cheaper than HTC want to charge.

Can u post a pic about that button please?
Is there a sticker on the right hand side that also says void? Its parallel with the SIM card, just below the battery if its the same as mine?

@corny2007 yes thats the one
Just to clarify, the voided sticker covers screws so if opened, the device warranty is voided.

correct, but the assumtion made by an earlier poster is that the tech would see that hspl was installed, and break the void sticker to mark the device as out of warranty. (Can't see it myself, but you never know, cunning devils!)

AFAIK
I thought that the supplier has the responsibility to show that you have damaged a device by opening it anyway.
IOW damage or removal of those stickers don't necessarily mean that your rights to a repair have been lost.
For them to deliberately damage the stickers to "void your warranty sir" sounds like bordering on fraudulent. I sincerely hope a company like HTC wouldn't do something like that.
I would reply with: "The phone crashed on me in total darkness and I was fumbling around with a biro attempting to poke the stupidly small and impossibly placed reset button, I must have stuck it in your sticker by mistake."
EDIT: Final killer comment would be: "Unless of course one of your service guys did it out of pure spite to void my warranty?" :O

The void sticker is normal. It's if it's broken (by inserting a screwdriver in the screw) that things will go bad.
Why do they put it in such a tempting form? Why cant they have like a tab that snaps once the phone is open(Sticker that is connected to both the case and the main board)? Thats a much simpler and less scary and tempting.

I would send it to be repaired, once you've opened it and had a look your warranty will be void..
Ok so i flashed my galaxy s last night
flashed gingerbread with odin all went fine.
couldnt access cwm mode , so tried a reflash. it failed half way through the flash.
I suspect low battery was the cause of the fail (my fault i know before i get flamed )
after reading many post i was wondering if anyone knows where i can get it jtag
Prefferably in the north east uk, or know where i could sent it.
Thanks in advance
A quick ebay search gave me a lot of results....

Hope this helps
thanks for your reply but these only work if you have some life in the phone, mine dosnt light up vibrate or anything
might be worth a try anyway... I mean you could always bring it to a repair centre???
Here is a tip for you, mate
If your phone is so damaged that no one seems to know what went wrong with it unless you told them you flashed a ROM and everything went wrong.
SEND TO SAMSUNG FOR FREE!
How? With your current condition, they can't tell that you messed around with it. Do not mention anything about Froyo, Gingerbread, Odin, Flash, Kernel. Act like you know nothing about all of those.
Try to put the blame on Kies. Tell them that you connected to Kies and it asked you for a Firmware Update. You click UPDATE and *KABOOM*. Your warranty would not be void. Trust me

I know it will sound dumb, but have you tried charging the battery? Does anything come out in the screen?

yes left it on charge over night
I bought my phone from someone else too. But the dude gave me a warranty document together with it.
I'm not sure if this applies to other region, but in Asia, phones have warranty stickers in them in case the warranty documents are not available.
Samsung Galaxy S GT i9000 has a warranty period of 2 years.

And in most cases the Service Centre will just the IMEI of the phone to check the warranty status. Hope you get it sorted..
Normally, when you charge your phone and you press the power key, the screen will show a battery charging, and the level of charge. When you do it, does anything come out in the screen?
After installing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826484 and running Titanium Backup my n7 stopped, a black screen after restart. Disconnecting the battery does not work, nothing happens when plug in to charger, n7 very very quietly squealing.
I can not return it because I have installed other software.
Anything else I can do?

How exactly did you 'disconnect' the battery in a device with a non-removable battery?
Also holding down power button for 30+ Seconds is the universal "Kill switch" for situations like this, I'm thinking popping the battery was probably the worst thing you probably could have done (as you may have done something inside the unit).
Also the "other software" bit... that is not usually a problem if there is actual hardware fault with the unit... however popping the thing open to disconnect the battery most certainly would have voided the hardware portion of the warranty.

How old is it? Maybe the battery is shot?
The only other thing I can think of just off the top of my head, is the possibility you didn't ground yourself before messing with the battery and shorted something. Also not sure bout the whining noise from the N7 (as I'm nearly deaf I usually don't hear high pitch stuff from my own stuff).

The warranty is considered void if the bootloader is unlocked. It does sound like a hardware failure.

I guess it is worth a try. If they decide not to honor the warranty, they will call you with the price of the repair, or if you dont want to pay, just to ship it back to you as is.

Depending on the company problems caused by hardware (if you can prove it), would be irrelevant if the bootloader was unlocked if the hardware fault would have occurred regardless. I've actually helped a friend (many years ago) get warranty on his HTC Sapphire (T-Mobile MyTouch3G Fender), even though it had been rooted and custom bootloader, because the fault was clearly hardware and unrelated to anything that was done via the software.

Are you sure? As far as I know unlocking the boot loader doesn't void the warranty. Only in case the unlocked boot loader is the reason for the fault (I.e. you flashed it with wrong software) the warranty us considered void.
A different thing is opening the case: this might be seen as a reason to declare the warranty void.

We have a sticky here that addresses this issue for most N7 owners. The sticky addresses a number of related issues with their associated fixes. If this sticky doesn't do the trick, you may need to return it.

This is fundamentally true. It's part of the magnussen-moss warranty acct. But if you were denied (wrongly) are you going to legally challenge them over a $200 device?
The warranty act was put in place, partially, to keep Mfgs from requiring branded parts/consumables to get warranty protection. For instance requiring you to run Ford branded oil in your Ford truck. But a side benefit is that you cannot (should not) be denied warranty for a bad windshield washer motor because you put wider rims on your car.
Back to our devices. I think the whole warranty thing is blown out of proportion. There is no bounty for finding rooted device. I guarantee you the returns dept is short staffed and has a metric for how many devices they process a day. Is anyone seeing lots of reports of warranty denied? It's a $200 device, not a new engine for a Subaru WRX.
With all that said I'm not a fan of sending a device that was borked by a bad flash back for warranty replacement. (Bad hardware is a different case.

I just want an answer for this as I get into a discussion with my fellow g2 user if I root my phone would it means that I lose warranty for the device.
Is there any particular ground or anything that backup that. I mean, legally, that will prevent us to claim the warranty.

If your talking about an insurance claim you should be fine, Ive done too many insurance claims when I lost my rooted devices with no problem
However if your talking about a warranty claim and you plan on ever bringing it in to a carrier store then you could just do the carrier specific revert to stock method. And yes it would remove the rooting status completely off your device so your G2 carrier will never know it was ever rooted, which means you will not lose your warranty. This has been discussed already on the forums so moving foward you should know you will be just fine.

Your golden as long as you revert to stock. I have not heard anything that contradicts this information.
with the condition of rooted phone, someone mention it that in the LG warranty clause there is no single poin in it that state root=warranty void.

It depends on the carrier and the device. Usually it will not void your warranty, but some service rep at warranty places like to try and give you a hard time because they dont want to eat the cost of the device. As long as you make it a point to tell them to f off you'll be fine (in nicer words though).
