[Q]Bad Display - Bought on Craigslist - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the bad display, but bought my MT4G from someone on Craigslist.
Can I still do a warranty replacement?
I sold the G2 that I bought last from T-Mobile.
any ideas/tips would be welcomed, thanks!

Might try HTC directly. but t-mobile will not be able to do anything.
Now i have head of people calling and "complaining" about the internet not* working. Then they'll double check the IMEI number and the system will think you bought it... but i doubt that will help with a "i read on a forum and have a bad display" warranty.

I called T-Mobile and said I traded my G2 with a friend for MT4G. They now have a link to the XDA Bad Display thread, and the one on TMOForums. My Rep said she would spread this information around the MT4G support dept. They are sending my replacement! :cross fingers:

I just got my new phone in today! I bought mine off craigslist with bad display and thought I was out of luck called T-Mobile and told them straight up what was going on and they sent me a new one no problem! Also got an email saying we will send you the tracjing number as soon as the phone ships about thirty minutes after the ups Guy dropped off my phone ha ha. Took less than 24 hours so I'm pretty impressed with T-Mobile!

Waranty on TMobile G1 bought off of eBay

Hey guys,
Basically bought a g1 off of ebay about 6 months ago, and now the screen doesn't work. It should be covered by warranty, but HTC said tmobile look after it, and tmobile said because im not a customer HTC look after it? and so no one is taking responsibility.
Any ideas or advice?
sounds like big nusiness to me, just raise hell, tell HTC how much you have loved their customer service in the past and that you would hate for them to put a black mark on their own record. i would really hate to move to another phone company but if they refused to fix the phone as it is under warranty then i would
Yeah... it sucks a bit, when i try to live on the 'cutting' edge and buy stuff before it's sold locally... I'm gonna just cause a big fuss over it...
The most annoying thing, is it's the second g1! The first one I had, had a bad trackball. I noticed it straight away and sent it back to the seller, but it got 'lost' in transit. So i lost $500 usd on that one.... I'm not preprared to lose another $500!!

Don't bother trying to go through T-mobile. If it isn't bought through them, they can not and will not help you with a warranty exchange.
Your chances of getting warranty through HTC is slim unless you can somehow prove the phone is less than a year old.

that's not too hard to do since the phone was released on October 22nd of 2008
haha, word.
haha yeah, was thinking the same thing.. it's been out for less then a year...
I just got off the phone with HTC USA and they told me the same thing again, I have to go through tmobile. I was like No, I can't. I don't have an account with them. The phone was purchased 'out-right'. They said well in that case, the only other thing i can think of is if you go to Reapirs and they gave me their number. Said their only open like 8:30 - 5. So i'll have to call back in the morning...
Like why is everyone passing it around for? I mean, im sure tmobile don't actually repair the phone, they just ship it down to HTC for repairs.. whats the big deal?
What? omg where did it go?

If I buy a MT4G on ebay... Can I get "good" screen...

If I buy a MT4G on ebay and I don't get the "good" screen, can I warranty it?
How would you go about buying a MT4G for a good price and getting the better screen?
I bought mine on ebay and still got it replaced by Tmobile for free. You buy the phone, wait a few days for your IMEI number to go into their system, then contact customer service (I did it through online chat), don't mention anything about where you bought it just say that you have a MyTouch 4G and the screen looks washed out etc., and they should send you a replacement.
i have a mytouch 4g and had it replaced only because i bought it brand spanking new. if the mt4g has ever been activated on another persons account they will not warranty it, they will say the warranty is not valid. the reason i know this is because my husband had a vibrant that we bought off craigslist and because the phone had already been activated on the girls account they would not honor the warranty because they can tell that you were not the first to use the phone. i hope this helps
I've bought multiple phones off Craigslist and had them all replaced through warranty. Some of them more then once. As long as its still under the one year warranty you should be able to get it replaced. Can't speak for other people though. I was never denied or even given a hard time about an exchange.

Yea I bought mine off ebay and had awsome screen quality off the bat so I had no need to return mine to tmob's
I have a bad screen. Who cares?! Unless u stare at your phone from an extreme angle... I never did understand the problem. I can understand knowing there is a better screen and expecting it for the money though.
Plus mine can overclock on any kernal at any setting out so far with zero freezes. Does your "good" screen do that?

I was telling myself the same thing until I went back to the tmobile store, found one with a good display, and compared them side by side. I'd seen the pictures and videos, but in person, it really was a night and day difference.
Since looking into our screens is ultimately a lot of what we all do on a smart phone, this is something I definitely would not compromise on.

Well T-Mobile, looks like you have fully reimbursed me for the inconveniences that you have presented me during my replacement order, maybe OVER reimbursed me. Why? Here's the story.
I posted a thread named "Tmobile Lost my Phone?" a few days ago where I described my situation in which Tmobile made a mistake on the replacement order for my Vibrant. As a prepaid customer, I have to ship the phone in first before I get a replacement, so I believe a person in the return center confused it with a postpaid replacement where you receive the replacement phone first, thus causing the delay. Well, I contacted the executive response department and they expedited a new replacement order. Great, so now I recontact Tmobile customer service again and this time, they tell me the order was finally sent, after 16 business days.
The result? I now have two Samsung Vibrants, one with the battery and the back cover, and another without a battery or back cover.
Just wanted to share my story. (Should I trade one of the Vibrants?) Maybe I should change my sig...
Watch those karma points my friend. Sounds like you earned it, but I am just saying...
when you bought your vibrant, didn't it come with a extra cover? and the batteries are 30-40 dollars, buy one its worth it you saved a few hundred dollars.
Lost the spare cover, but batteries on ebay are 7 dollars and battery covers 10 I think.

Karma? Well, I spent 2 weeks without a phone for business or personal use, contacted tmobile customer care about 20 times, filed BBC claims, and finally got to a executive rep.

I've gotten 2 phones replaced FREE as well as a battery as a prepaid customer and they always sent the replacement first before I returned the one I had. They even offered me the opportunity to go into a tmo store and get a free replacement loaner until I received the replacement vibrant!
Me too. They gave me a phone and a shipping bag for the dead phone.
Shipping bag for the dead phone? As in a bag to ship in the faulty phone?
Hey guys, do you think an HD2 with 35 dollars cash is a good trade?

i think hd2 with 75 cash is a better deal. hd2 just sucks really bad and has old hardware. if anything you can probably get a g2 for it
I just got an offer for a "good" condition g2. But I am not a fan of the z- hinge and the screen is too small imo.
I may get lucky and just trade for a hd7.

good luck with that. i tried to trade for an hd7 and all the craigslist ads said vibrant and 100 bucks for it. besides hd7 has same hardware as hd2. if all you care about is screen size then go ahead and try. you can always try and just sell it for about 200-300 bucks
ps don't forget if you get the g2 you don't have to use the keyboard and the screen is only .2 in smaller then the vibrant

my wife has a G2 and honestly i can't even tell the difference in the screen size when i use it. the display is not as good, but not too much. plus, i just flashed GingerVillian 1.5 (cm7) on it and man is it sweet. i'd go for the G2 for sure.
I had the hd7
Traded for vibrant
Coudn't be happier.

just random looking at everyone's signature and it looks like everyones running flagship v4 now a days. just saying, it has nothing to do with this post. what does have to do with this post is if you can, go with the g2 you'll still have the vibrant. plus you can try out tmobiles real 4g speeds
I returned my G2 for the Vibrant and could not be happier. The G2 is very heavy! If you drop it and it is not protected, it will surely break. Also its kind of thick. Kind of feels like a TV remote in your pocket. I also felt the screen could have used more width. And the Z hinge is cool, but it pops open when you dont want it to more often than you'd think. Gets irritating.
I would have kept it if the Vibrant had not been an equal trade. As for now, You're better off selling your second vibrant and waiting for a dual core device!
Id sell and use that money on a new device or trade for a tablet and some cash.

[Q] Warranty question for non T-Mobile Customer

Okay, so I have Family Mobile. Rebranded pre-pay service sold through Wal-Mart, powered by T-Mobile. Last week I bought a MT4G from a friend to use on my service. Today for some reason, suddenly the WIFI has been WEAK, like unless I literally sit right next to my router I'm out of range. No drops of the phone, nothing. I take VERY good care of it.
My question is, seeing as I'm not officially a T-Mobile customer, is there any way I can get a warranty replacement, and if so how? Would I have to deal directly with HTC? I have no clue what to do here...
Thanks in advance!
I'm wondering the same thing.. Mine broke
All phones come with a one year manufactures warranty on it. Although you may have to have your friend call it in, I'm not to sure about that part. Also if your rooted you will need to change everything back to stock to be processed under warranty.

I emailed HTC and they said that I could get warranty work through them, I just wont have a phone until it's done. Now to begin the unrooting process!
If you had your friend who originally got the phone, call tmobile, they could do a warranty exchange, and that way you could keep your phone till the new one came in the mail...
Sent from MyTouch 4G: CM7 RC2 using XDA App
T-Mobile only warranties phones that are t-mobile branded and that were bought for your line (unless you have a sales receipt but that's tough even if you do)... Even if you have Insurance & Extended warranty they will only warranty a phone bought for your line bought from t-mobile directly (receipt required if from a 3rd party dealer)...
On a better note - I noticed lately that they have been forgetting to check if it was purchased for your line as they forgot with my HD2 which I got on CL from someone who got a warranty exchange and had never turned used it on t-mobile... so its worth a shot...

Ummm... I got a G2 through a trade for an AT&T phone, and I have it on an EM+ plan, with insurance. I then traded that phone for a MT4G, and it turned out the one I traded for has the bad display. 2 days after I got it, T-Mo is sending me a replacement through warranty exchange. They even asked where I got it from.
So yeah... Not sure why you think you need a receipt and proof of purchase. Or maybe I just got REALLY lucky, though I doubt it.

LG G2 Replacement

Long story short, dropped the phone and shattered the screen. Digitizer dead so touch screen doesn't work!
Yesterday was the last day I could have put the insurance on it so I cant take it back to Best Buy or anything.
Called LG and they said I have to send it in but i don't wanna imagine how much hey will charge me.
Anybody know if they sell the digitizers separate to buy to replace the screen?
Any help will be appreciated

Yeah I asked but they didn't wanna mention a price at all because they want me to send it in and they wanna see it. But you can clearly see that the LCD isn't broken, just the panel on top.
I might send it in and I know if I choose not to they will send it back.

Lesson learned. Always put a case. You never know if a case could have reduced or prevented the damage.

oh wow that's really cheap! the cheapest i can find the part on eBay was $140, I rather send it in! thanks guys!
i had a case on mine, but had it off when i dropped it a couple nights ago. same story--phone still works, but the cracks the dropped caused left the screen unresponsive to touch.
i also heard the same thing from LG, but my biggest issue was that i wanted to retrieve data that i had on the phone. they said that they always wipe the data when they do any repairs on it, so i purchased that screen from china and am giving it a go on wednesday.
wish me luck! :fingers-crossed:
So, lol, the same thing happened to me. I wanted to post a pdf of the tear down guide that might help you guys, as I couldn't find it anywhere online.
I was going to order the part online, but after hearing about it being cheaper to send to LG, I might just do that instead!

To be honest it is cheaper then insurance..... I bought the ProtectCell after I broke the first one. and it is $200 or something up front plus $150 every time you break it.... Aka I could fix my phone 3 times before the insurance is a better deal.
Ughhh...same thing happened to me about an hour ago. Would one of you be able to share where you tracked down where to send it in. I'll start digging around for info on this, but thought I'd ask. Thanks!

Can't post a link since I'm new but lg(dot)com/us/support/repair-service/schedule-repair should work for you.
I dropped mine last week and called their 1-800 number to create a Return Authorization, rather than using the web page. Ended up being $146 to repair mine, which is still cheaper than local shops and far less risky than me trying to figure out how to do it solo. They received it Thursday, gave me the quote late Friday, and I called in to make the payment then. Hopefully it's repaired Monday and on it's way back to me by mid-week.

Awesome. Thanks so much for the reply. I think I will give them a ring tomorrow. I had found the LG repair link prior to your reply and, oddly enough, the G2 isn't even listed in the list of selectable products, so figured I'd have to call anyhow.
I'm generally extremely careful with my devices, maybe even anal, so I generally don't buy insurance. However, this is the second phone, after my G-Nexus, which has ended up with a smashed screen due to a freak accident. Starting to rethink my take on insurance......
Thanks again!

the lg g2 isn't listed because of the different model numbers (d800, vs980 etc), so just select the model you have. I'm waiting for my call from them now.

Thanks. I noticed that after the fact. Had been looking for the G2 so overlooked the other options. Ended up using the live chat option which worked very well. Also checked back in with live chat a few times to see where the process was at once I sent it in.
Long story longer, I will have mine back in my greedy little hands tomorrow if Fed-Ex holds up their end of the bargain. Like another poster stated, the repair cost was $146, which includes return shipping, plus my cost to send it to Texas. Took about 2-1/2 weeks total from the day I shipped to getting it back tomorrow. I saw another poster-or-two mentioned that their repair was quoted at $105. Not sure why mine and others were up at $146 since mine seemed like a pretty basic crack and I figured thus, it would be at the lower end of the reported repair chargees.
Looking forward to getting it back. Had already sold my G-Nex so I've been scraping by with my resurrected Palm Pre for the past couple weeks
