I know I am going to cause some trouble by asking this but why?
On taking my new Orange SPV M600 out of the box, I have to agree a bit sluggish, but this was mainly due to Windows.
After a little tweaking with the registry and some third party software it is now flying.
I originally thought that putting third party software over the top of the system would slow it even more, but know, the opposite was true. Using the standard windows task bar and start menu was dreadful. I tried a number of third party softwares such as True Toolbar, Handyswitcher etc, finally settling on Wisbar deluxe.
Everything now opens as soon as it is selected no nasty lag like windows. With some skinning and removal of Customised Today the phone looks great and is performing great. That is apart from my wired hands free. I can now answer and close calls with the button, but it does not activate voice dial when pressed, so I can't dial out hands free. All prevoius phones, Nokia and SE did this no problem, so why not this phone?
Anyway, back to the point of ROMS, why keep flashing?
I just got me one of those SPV M600 things and its not that slow, but I havent added anything else to it yet. Would you care to elaborate on "registry tweaks"? Im new to XDA/phones and havent started messing about yet.
I can not remember all of the tweaks I used, but there is a big section somewhere in here listing them. I have them somewhere on the computer but my filing is a mess and I can't remember what I called the text file or where I put it.
Basically the tweaks are just simple things like increasing cache size for fonts, programs etc. Moving file storage off main memory to SD card, disabling and enabling etc. It is claimed by doing this that the system will speed up a little. I am not sure if any of these actually did anything or if it is just down to Wisbar. All I can say is that when I click on a program it fires up straight away, before it could take a second or two.

Actually, the rule about flashing is: If it's not broken don't fix it.
People upgrade because they want to get rid of bugs or add features like AKU 2.0 that includes push mail and some other stuff.
Also some brands are better that others in some ways, and worse in other ways. There are several ROMs for the Prophet: Dopod, i-mate, Qtek, Orange. Finally some people cook their own ROMs throwing out useless stuff and adding apps they 'must have'.
All in all if you are pleased with your phone there is no need to change the ROM. When I got my Jamin it had the i-mate 1.xx ROM so I upgraded to 2.13 to get the AKU 2.0 goodies.
I always belive the latest is the greatest, even if its not. I still run the latest. While the release notes say "Added this, fixed that" they also contain a lot of fixes and changes not documented.
Hi all.
Thats actually a very good question. From my experience you dont really need to change anything. Maybe as you said some registry tweaking or some basic settings. However as someone already said, the golden rule should be if it is not broken dont try to fix it.
On the other hand you might want to change things with no reason, just because you can.. and I have to admit that it is hard not to do. Then you have to make sure that you know what you are doing cause otherwise you might end up spending your day in forums try to fix whatever you &^%$ up..
Take care.
Thanks for the replies.
I have to admit, when I first got the phone I started tweaking, then I found this forum and others. Once I discovered unlocking and flashing ROMS, I was very close to doing it. Then I remembered what I used to be like on my PC. With old systems like Win ME, I used to spend about 70% of my time tweaking and fixing, and only 30% actually using the damn thing. Not what I want out of a phone.
Just by messing around with skins, I have already managed to lose my phone dialer all together, I was left with a blank screen, so I had a phone that could not phone. I have it nicely skinned and running now, but I was never able to get the Orange dialer back.
Guess the only time I will flash my ROM is when there is a genuine update and it is covered by warranty, that way if the ROM is bad, Orange can give me another phone.
Thanks
I look at it same way as i look at windows.
My windows isn't broke but I always use Windows Update.
Why do YOU update windows, if you do at all. I guess im not sure if this is advisable, but that's just the way i do it.
Regarding upgrading ROM, MOST of the time, it makes the device faster and adds more features ( i never install extended ROM ) so I always upgrade when there is a new one.
I've downgraded ONCE. And only the RADIO because 1.11 didn't agree with my device.
There are ways to Backup the device, change to a different BRAND/VERISON of ROM then restore the backup. This makes changing ROM very easy.
Anyway, I have nothing better to do with my time so i upgrade whenever a new ROM comes out.
Sorry to but in again but I simply must disagree with the Windows update analogy.
I have my PC set to auto update as well, but Windows XP runs updates in the background and doesn't delete you data in the process.
ROM upgrade means HARD RESET, and unless you have a good backup a long restore process.
Also there is the danger of communication / power interrupt during the flashing and a bricked device as a result.
Finlay, like with your radio ROM, some OS updates have new bugs as well as fixes for the old.
But I do wish it was as simple as updating windows - then I would say, update away, couldn't hurt.
My analogy was based only on the reason for updating, not the process itself that you are stating.
What I mean is if your windows works, why update?.... This thinking... Not the "ritual"...
Sorry i did not explain that clearly. The guy just asked why update if you are content with what you have.... It has nothing to do with "I would update only if the process were simpler" like what you stated.
Sorry for the misunderstanding
I upgrade because I can cook my own ROM with better application suite

Because it's full of holes and most of the updates are plugging them.
I think the main point is you dont have to upgrade, you can if you want, its a matter of choice.
I like to always update, some like to keep the same and have never hard reset in their life. Im on my 9th this week :S but it is a new device and im still figuring it all out.

Hmm, then i guess your advice to NewSPV is to upgrade.
Me too, as i said in earlier post, i will always upgrade to the newest ROM, then just downgrade if i don't like the changes. Unfortunately it isn't as easy to downgrade from Windows SP2 hehehe

I was talking about Windows, not WM5.
My phone came shipped with an AKU2 rom and it's fine - after a little tweaking. I'm not going to risk bricking my pride and joy with a rom upgrade - as so many people have done already on this forum.
Can anyone name some good places to read about how to flash your device with a new ROM?
Also, I was wondering about what the "extended ROM" is. Is it basically partitioning part of your storage card for use as "internal memory" ?
Thanks for the info guys!

Look at the top left of this very page and you will see a link to the wiki section of this site. How to flash is in there.
The extended rom is where the operator adds thier own customisations (over and above what M$ provide) to the device, for example Orange and O2 add their own options in there and they install when the device is powered up for the first time or when it's hard reset. If you get access to the extended rom (again look in the wiki) you can manipulate what gets installed and if you're really clever, add some of your own stuff.
Don't ask me how to do these things as I have not tried myself, the risk of bricking the device is too great for my liking.
cool, thanks paul

Actually, it is virtually impossible to brick your device by manipulating the contents of the extended ROM. It is only accessed once, during first boot, and event that can be avoided by quickly soft resetting the device.
Basically it acts exactly like "file store" used to on WM 2003 devices, the only difference being it is hidden so ordinary users won't get rid of the operator junk.
In my case it was very nice of i-mate to provide various goodies there like voice dial (should be in ROM) anti virus (not only useless but damaging crap) Skype (could have just downloaded from their site, but nice thought) and backgammon (toys are always welcome).
But now ofter the initial installation it makes all the sense in the world to save these cabs (9MB~) to my PC and have extra 10 MB storage on the device.
Hey guys, this post is just my way in saying thanks for all the help all of you guys have given me and for making it possible to have android on my HD2
Basically I have been doing some testing and have come up with a combination of things you can do to give yourself a fully working android build Ofcorse some of the information I had to test with was provided by other members but this combination I think is flawless, well at least it is for me ^^.
To begin you’re going to want to get the right WM rom for your android, and after testing I found the best one to be
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734238
I have not had any problems with it. Just flash it to your device and let’s go from there.
Next your going to want to do something allot of members do not think of doing, and that is formatting the SD card PROPERLY, as this eliminates allot of problems for various reasons. The correct way to do this is, boot yourself into Linux, Ubuntu is the easiest in my eyes, and you can get it on a live CD or USB so it’s easy to get into, just boot into Ubuntu plug in your SDcard and its better if you can insert it via an SDcard slot in an adapter. Then format it as FAT not FAT32, I wont explain why this is better, but it will. Check this out if you really want to know why you need to do it ^^ but you don’t really need to know
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750780
Next thing is your android build. Now there are ALOT of builds that work well but there is only one that I believe can give you a real working android experience, and the next part of this guide is based on this build so I suggest you use it .
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740963
Ok, so you have got your build on your card you have booted into it and it’s ready to go, right? Not yet. One of the most annoying things that occur in android under the HD2 is the random freezing and this is how I removed this pesky little annoyance.
1. Unlock your screen and hit the settings key (windows key)
2. Hit settings
3. Hit Cyanogenmod Settings
4. Hit User Interface
5. Scroll down to Accelerometer rotation
6. Make sure ONLY 90 degrees is ticked!
7. Done
Now that setting is how I have managed to eliminate the problem, but don’t worry if you still have this issue, just go back into the Cyanogenmod settings and turn off 90 degrees and then under display turn off Auto-rotate screen, this should eliminate the problems but then your screen wont rotate automatically so its swings and roundabouts really ^^
Top Tips!
DONT use live wallpapers, they WILL kill your battery and drastically decrease the performance of your HD2!
Turn off the GPS as it is on by Default, it drains battery ALOT and isn't necessary most of the time ^^
Get the XDA app because its mega? And you suck if you don’t!
Calibrate the Gsensor, it will reduce the screen freezes (that’s if you even have them, witch you shouldn’t after this guide: P)
Finally, always remember that you should turn off your phone to charge it OR have it booted into WinMo, allot of reasons why you should do this but again just do it
Hope this helped someone somewhere Its my first real post that gave something back to the community and I AM a noob hehe, so any addition to this guide is welcome ^^ Again thanks allot all you guys at XDA that made this possible and I will keep this updated as necessary
Thanks allot. Dane.

Well if your looking at this guide, you probably already have HardSPL :l and even if you didn't when you take a look at the ROM pages it explains it there, so I don't think its very productive or helpful to post random crap like that :l And as for the radio, i tested several radios and it didn't make any difference TO ME but if you really want to know the radio i am running its, 2.12.50. Did you turn off all the screen rotation under cm settings and normal settings and did you calibrate the Gsensor these things can also resolve the problem, you can also disable the Gsensor in WinMO and this will cure your problem but thats not reccomended ^^ Give those suggestions a try, again hope it works for you.

Are we allowed to start a poll asking people which mainstream rom they're using just so we know what is the most common and popular rom is,? Or is it a taboo?

that this method is a lot of trouble for no additional benefit over a simple format using WinMo in the phone. If you would "explain why" it would be interesting because no one else can. A full WinMo format, not quick, overwrites the complete data space on an SD card with new redundant data. It also only reserves and writes one FAT where Windows on the PC reserves and writes two. You can't get something from nothing and WinMo non-quick format leaves nothing in the data space. (And yes I do understand full mil spec data destruction and redundent and random erase so everything is destroyed.)

Well i may be wrong but as far as i was aware, when you put a linux android build on your SDcard it creates a partition or something like that on the card, (i will look it up and get back to you) and windows cannot see it, wheras linux can see it and therefore it can wipe it, and these left over bits that windows cant see dont always get on when you get a new build Thanks for pointing it out though, just wanna help as many as possible ^^

@friedsushi definitely agree with you it isn't clarified correctly about different radios affecting the android or that hspl is necessary for it to work. I am constantly getting people pming me to ask for a walkthrough, which on most occasions I have been able to get this working even though my wordage is more simplified in layman's terms-his looks like its been copy/pasted from all over these pages which in effect isn't a bad thing but to call it a guide and not including vital information is a bit haphazard IMO.
& to the op I am not flaming you but there are already guides out there & don't particularly need another unfinished version to add to the numerous threads which have only just been cleaned up by the mods, plus with only 11 posts 8 of which are on here I honestly don't see much experience to be able to give people guides

Again i am not flaming but i was just providing a set of instructions that i did, to get it working. So its not a unfinished guide, just because it didnt include some realy basic information. I'm just giving you this as a warning, I got the activation code about one hour ago by calling MS customer support in US, after I activated with the code I could login with my Live ID but then I realized that the softwares I installed using XAP like HTC HUB, YouTube, Flashlight, ... were not working anymore and it gave me an error like this app has been provoked by MS please uninstall it, so don't bother getting the activation code.
You won't be able to download app from market place after activation and I personally think that they're marking us out by giving out the activation code so easilly over the phone!
EDIT : First I had to change the name of the device from LEO70 to HD7 and then activate wp7 by the code, sooooo it was my mistake and now everything just works fine including the marketplace but I had to uninstall and reinstall the provoked apps.

You thought better of this community? First the key is supposedly tied to your Live ID, so thats a no go there. Also, 3 times is a very small amount, if something goes wrong with my phone and I need to re-activate it once or twice after the first, then I sure as hell want to. If you want a key so bad get one your self like everyone else, or go buy a real certified Windows Phone 7 device. Besides, I can almost guarantee the first or second OTA update will most certainly kill this exploit, even if the HD2 isn't able to receive it.

It took me a 5 minute phone call to get an activation code from Microsoft. No questions, no hassles. MS can't just track you down via e-mail or your Live ID. There are Data Protection Laws.

Very well put.
Got sick of all these people pming me and creating posts/topics begging for keys.
I got my activation code a couple minutes ago and decided to swap out my 2gb sd card for a 16gb one. After I popped it in, I had to setup my phone again, which I figured would happen, but then it said something about low storage, so I figured I needed to reflash the rom so WP7 would partition the new sd card in whatever manor it does.
My question is, now that I have an activation code, do I need to run Chevron and unlock the phone again or can I just put the activation code in and start downloading apps? My only concern is I've now used my activation code twice, so I don't want to hit the limit without doing this all correctly :/
AFAIK, it associates your IMEI with your Live account, so it should just work..
I find it hard to believe that the activation code will stop working if you try to use it again with the same live account.
I did reflashm, and activation code worked no problem

Some mentioned it in a thread at one point, but I've read that people have used their code 3 or even 5 times, so I may just be overly paranoid about it haha.

Just tried it and it works fine! Thanks so much man
One last question: Since I put my new sd card in before reflashing, did that mess up how WP7 partitions it when I eventually did reflash? Or was WP7 not recognizing the new sd card anyway since it was put in after the initial flash, causing WP7 to not see it, hence the "low storage" message I ended up getting?
I have used it at least 5 times over. I doubt you will have any issues. Its just the code associated to your account. They dont monitor that, its just a key for service.

I agree.. i think it's linked to your Live ID.. So when you sell the phone, the buyer should get a new key from MS for his Live ID and you can use the same key for your new phone. Correct me if am wrong.

Ooo, that's pretty awesome, though I doubt I'll ever sell my HD2, this guy is a beast haha.
Oooone last question and sorry that it's slightly off topic: I'm trying to download stuff from the Marketplace, but I get this message "we can't get this info check back in a little while". Is this something that will work in a few minutes, or is there something I need to do, like change the reg or something?
can u guys tell me how can we talk with MS service? Cause I fone them already, and they ask me alot of informations: home, fone, IMEI ..... but i m not sure we can use HD2's IMEI or not, cause I told them I use HD7 2nd. So dont have active code T_T
Some1 plz tell me what exactly I have to tell them to get the code.
Thank you

You need to do the registry hack so your phone is recognized as a HD7 t9292
the support guy told me to place the code at a safe place because i can use the code again if i need after a phone reset or something else

Error code:c101a420
Solved:
Arturo You wont have any problems getting your apps back. Just browse to them in the Marketplace and re-install. That feature seemed to be working even while attempting to download new apps returned c101a420 error code.

It may depend on who you talk to. I called after I ran Chevron, so in the settings in my phone it said "HD7", though I'm not 100% sure if that makes a difference.
I called, they asked for me first name, then last name, then phone number, and then if I have ever called MS before. They asked what the problem was, I said I'm trying to add my @live email and go to the Marketplace, but it says I need an activation code and I don't know what that is. The woman asked if I was using WP7 and I said yes. She said something along the lines of "Ohhh, ok, that's why you need the code." She said it would take a minute to generate one for me, so I waited a bit and she asked what brand my phone was. I said HD7 and she seemed confused, so I then said HTC HD7 and she understood that. A couple minutes later she read the code to me so I could write it down, then I read it back to her to double check and that was it!
I've read about other people having to give numbers from the back of the phone or other specific details, but I didn't have to do any of that for whatever reason

I figured I'd have to do that reg hack. I may wait a bit though just to see if it ends up working anyway for whatever reason.
Thanks so much guys!

You do have to hack the registry so your phone appears as a HD7... A lot of apps won't download until you do that. There's directions all over to do that. There shouldn't be any wait time after getting your code. If your phone doesn't appear as a HD7 when you look at the info on your phone, you will get that message when trying to download apps.
seems live id can't be deleted

I noticed that this update appeared on Zune. Think I'll wait till some of the experts here give us advice if this can be applied to the WP7 on the HD2
thats why i didnt install update afraid it might jack up my hd2.wait and see what the pros do
send a report to microsoft saying your hd2 cant update
lol, someone should try and use the update for there hd2 and tell us how it goes,
believe it or not, i wouldn't be surprised if some hd2's update good and some don't.
we'll let the dev's make a new rom for this than.
Seeing the same on mine.. runs through the process, then backs out the changes saying registry settings are invalid

yea i just connected my phone and the update popped up, i'll give it a try and post back up with what it says.
Same thing here with DFT build for HD2, registry error and it backed out.
lol Guys, why would the update work, as its meant for an HD7, not a reg hacked HD2.??? THe hardware specs are not the same so the drivers will have been changed/modded so it just aint gonna happen.
Dont bother trying to apply the update, we'll have to all wait until the new rom is dumped and re-hacked.
You will also know that the new rom will block chevron unlocking, although schaps is on the case, google for more info

Nice to hear this, either way trying wouldn't have hurt anyone.
I am using HD2 with WP7. Itried earlier to install the update, I have received an error.

Some people are just born dumb.
i hate to say i told you so but i cant resist.
I did say that there would be a way for MS to identify our HD2s, there will be some common reg entry or file in the original DFT release that they have scanned for and i got slated for it. oh well, going to have to wait for a updated ROM my thinks, and based on the fact that this update only changes the way in which our phones get updated i dont think there is any point in the slightest in installing this.

You are soooooo right!!!
same here zune 80180089 error
We all have to wait for dev's to cook this into there roms, either way this
isn't that much of a big update, so it's really not worth it.

I'm see no reason why Microsoft wouldn't be able read your phone's IMEI before updating. It's a more reliable model identifier than anything in the registry, and will instantly tell them they're dealing with a HD2.
Indeed, not much point in trying to apply this update. At best, you gain very little (no new features). At worst, you're going to have to reflash.
