I have spent the last two days reading all the past forums on the problems that people are having with the mogul being stuck in the bootloader screen. I find my problem a little more unique. My phone, about three months ago would get stuck in the bootloader screen after I did a soft reset. I could get out of it if I plugged a cord into the mini usb on the phone. Now I can't. I can't get it out of the bootloader at any effort. I have never tried to upgrade the rom or anything. Its all stock. I tried downloading the exit boot loader program, the program says it worked, my phone will shut off on its own and then go back into the bootloader screen to no avail. I even took it to the sprint repair and they said it is a brick. I'm at my last straw, anyone have any ideas before I give up and buy a new phone.
Thanks.
you have a hardware failure. Time for a new phone.
I was worried about that. Thanks for the info.
Just a little update. Although my phone never connects through active sync, I can upload rom, at least it shows it going through 100% on the phone screen. After the upload it goes back to the bootloader screen and is stuck again. Is this still a dead phone?
Yes it is dieing
Mine did the same. Did a hard reset and put on the latest ROM...fixed and going strong.
btw, take out your mini SD before the reset...hope it works out and you havent trashed the phone...Sprint repair told me the same thing..DOA...can't hurt to try it.
Just on 9/14 I began to experience the same problem with a refurb that I was sent just 5 months ago as a warranty replacement to my original phone. I also made this post in another thread about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4547989&postcount=18
I've been calling Sprint over and over about it, they refuse to do anything about it. I was told just a few days before this problem began that they would allow me $150 towards a new phone upgrade with a 2 year contract extension, but now they tell me I can't do that until January and they can't find any notes about it from the person who told me I could do it. I was told I would be given a new retail packaged phone, instead I got a refurb that lasted me 5 months. I've been nothing but lied to by Sprint, when I got the refurb they said I had 30 days to add insurance on it and they would send me a new phone, I said I would think about it and call back within 30 days if I decide to get insurance, but they put it on my account anyway without my permission. It took me 5 months to get them to finally take the insurance off my account on 9/11 and just 3 days later it starts having this problem... argh... any ideas or ways to get through with Sprint to get more towards an upgrade?
I was wanting to get the Touch Pro 2, if I wait until January they will offer me $150 for 2 year contract extension and $100 mail in rebate bringing the $600 price tag down to $350. I paid $300 initially for my mogul and now have a 5 month old dying refurb. I think sprint should offer me at least half my money back from my Mogul for another $150 towards an upgrade bringing the Touch Pro 2 down to $200 which is far more reasonable, after all Verizon is offering the same phone for $200 with 2 year contract. I was talking with retentions for the 2nd time today threatening to cancel, yesterday they were offering to get me to the Advanced Tech Support to do an advance exchange for a new phone of a different model (I was thinking they might offer a Touch Pro) and transferred me, then when the tech support asked for my wireless number I gave it to them then the call got disconnected, looked like they had hung up on me. When I called today they told me otherwise, and the only offer they would make me is to allow me out of my current contract with Sprint so I could cancel my service and find another provider. I'm on the $30/mo SERO plan... of course I don't REALLY want to leave Sprint... Does anyone have any other strategy for pushing Sprint to keep a customer and offer at least SOMETHING? I don't know what else to do, I've wasted so much time with Sprint and haven't been getting anywhere with them.
BTW: when I took it to a Sprint store they offered to re-flash the ROM on it but said there is an equal chance of fixing it or bricking it, but they would not offer any liability if it got bricked. I can flash the ROM myself with activesync just as well as they can, I can I brick it just as well as they can, do you think it's worth attempting it and that might fix it? Or is there any REAL potential for bricking my phone?
Just do an advanced replacement online through sprint.
It will not allow me to do an advance exchange or upgrade on Sprint's website, it directs me to sprint.com/everythingplus because I am on the SERO 500 plan. I also tried calling 888-882-4030 which is the number for Sales for employee referral accounts and was given the same price on the Touch Pro 2, it's not any different for SERO accounts or online, it's all the same.
Well if you go to ppcgeeks and look at the touch pro 2 section people are getting the TP2 with sero at the regular upgrade price with an extension.
Hey guys,
I've been lurking here ever since I got the incredible. Unfortunately, this is the first time I needed to post and it's bad news. My Incredible is rebooting more than 20 times a day, and I mean that not counting the reboot loop it gets stuck in. I have wiped the phone clean, started to go through the start up wizard, and it rebooted there, so I know it's not an bad app. It has rebooted randomly, though not as bad, before I rooted, so it's not that. I live in southern california and I get good service at home so I don't think it's the same problem as those incidents in south carolina. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? I'm running out of solutions and ready to just drop the phone, eat the ETF and go to sprint. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would flash it back to stock take it to verizon and show them what it is doing and have them send you another one, I brought mine back for the unresponsive screen issue and they said it was going to take three weeks for me to get another one but I received it 4 days later. so before switching to sprint and paying a big ETF I would try the above first. but if all else fails to ease the pain a little and not have to pay such a big ETF get a crappy verizon flip phone that you can activate on the line use it for a day or two then cancel your account. you will only pay a 175.00 ETF vs a 350.00 ETF. just a little round about way to "stick it" to the man.
Also, does downgrading and unrooting get rid of the wireless-n mod? Just downgraded and was in the wizard and right when I tried to connect to my network, it rebooted.
That's funny I just flashed it back to stock so I could do that. The problem is that I bought it from best buy in april and did not buy the extended warranty ( of course not, damn waste of money). IIRC, verizon does not honor warranties bought from a different store, correct?

if you reflash the stock ROM it wipes everything including root and wireless N, only reflash stock if you want to return it to the store otherwise you will have to go through the sd card root process again.

I am not sure if verizon won't exchange it, I think that there is a year warranty on the phone standard and extended warranty is only good for after the manufacturers warranty runs out. I would check with BB first and if they won't exchange it take it to verizon and see what they say, BB is an authorized verizon dealer so I would imagine that verizon will honor the warranty. but there is only one way to find out. Good Luck.
ok, so I took it to verizon today, and luckily for me it was rebooting away right after the CSR personally factory reset it. I actually was happy it did, too. She was so smug, telling me that I should have been using a task killer and that maybe I didn't factory reset it correctly. She starts it up and was giving me a "haha that's how you do it" look, when it rebooted on her. She battery pulled it, and then it went into a reboot loop on her. Her smug look was replaced by a look of defeat. It was worth the fact that I couldn't get it to stop rebooting for five minutes after that.
I then called 611 and they said they had a replacement for me and that it would be at my doorstep in two days. Evidently, they keep a separate stock for warranty issues. Well anyways, thanks for the help and I'll have an incredible back in my hands soon
Have u tried going into airplane mode and see if it does it? Just curious.

Haha I just read Ur last post, I find it funny cuz I work for Verizon also and man u would not believe how many reps say u need a task killer, dumbasses.

Yes, keeping it in airplane mode definitely helped. With that in mind, I might have an idea of what happened to my phone and potentially to other phones that have had this problem. I ordered the seidio 1750 batt. when I first got my phone, so I have been using it pretty much since the beginning. As you may know it can get unusually warm when in use. I would frequently use it when I'm at work to listen to podcasts and would keep it on the car charger while in use ( I work at a landfill doing gas monitoring, engineering, etc. so always in my work truck). That is first time I could recall a reboot occurring. I don't know how the internal layout is made up, but perhaps the radio or whatever else related received damage due to overheating. Oh well, already received my new incredible and I now have a battery charger so I will avoid charging and using at the same time. You guys are probably saying "Uh, yeah, of course that will happen, dumbass" but I've never had a problem with my other phones.
Hey, just putting it this out there. Had a problem with an Evo getting stuck in a boot loop. Not sure what the cause was. I did search the forums for a fix but everything I could find was referring to a rooted phone, and the problem with Exchange type e-mail did not apply in this instance. This phone was not being used with that type of e-mail account and the password was alphanumeric anyway. I did notice that the phone would reboot spontaneously on occasion early on, but I did not worry about it. I had read on the forums here that weird reboots are not all that uncommon. However, as time went by, the phone seemed to be getting more and more unstable. It has now reached the point that it will go through the boot cycle up to the 4G splash screen, then shut down and start over. I contacted Sprint, but being out of the 30 day trial period the only thing they were willing to do is file an insurance claim. So I talked to HTC and started the warranty repair process. The CSR I spoke with said it sounded like a chip had gone bad. Seems pretty painless so far but there is a bs "Triage and Technical Assesment" fee. Better than paying the $100 for the insurance though. Not looking for a fix. More just letting folks know. I would be interested to hear from any one that has gone through a warranty claim with HTC though. Still lovin' my Evo.
Quick update. Received a call from HTC Customer care today. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the phone was repaired and on it's way back. It was only mailed out last Friday, so I don't think they could have gotten it until Monday or more probably Tuesday. At any rate, the CSR said that it was repaired and that they had also been able to fix the light bleed at the bottom of the screen. I was told to expect it Friday, so here's hoping.
Don't know about the Evo but when I had issues with my diamond after a year I just went up to Sprint, the first time they tried to fix it and it seemed to work but shortly started doing what it was doing again, second trip they replaced it. Didn't have another problem.

Just adding some additional info here. I had my phone go bad with the exact same problem, 5 or 6 weeks after my girlfriends arrived. After a lot of horsing around with Sprint trying to get the problem resolved I sent this one back to HTC as well. I was pretty disappointed when they told me over the phone that it would be 2-3 weeks before it was sent back. Long story short, I called a few days later for a status update and they told me the phone was repaired, shipped, and out for delivery that day. A very pleasant surprise to say the least. They also told me what repairs were made on both phones. Main board replacement for each device. Seems like some of the early hardware might be a little sub par. The nice part is HTC seems to be on the ball when it comes to warranty repair. Some helpful info also; The triage fee is only charged if they deem the phone to have damage not covered by the warranty; Use the small Priority Mail Flat Rate box. $13 for guaranteed 2 day shipping, Delivery Confirmation(tracking #), and $500 insurance.
My power button has been going out the past few months, sometimes taking up to 5 times to turn it on. I'm guessing it will probably die soon enough. It probably would have died long before now if it weren't for me using trackball wake from CyanogenMod (but I still use the power button every so often such as when my hands are closer to the power button than the trackball).
Anyway, I called HTC recently and I'm going to do a swap. My warranty ends in just a few days, so I thought I'd get it fixed before then.
For those of us who bought the Nexus last January, the warranty is about to expire. Anyone else doing any service this week (or month) before it expires?
Motivated by you, I called HTC too about my power button issues. They told me swap option is not available to me (no idea why).
Since I have a few scratches on my screen too, I was looking forward to the swap option
My phone is unlocked so I did not request a repair on power button yet (I have 2 more months in warranty). I might wait and watch if the problem gets any worse.

They actually told me I was out of warranty (no idea why since I bought my phone mid-January). So he said he would put a note on it explaining that it has been less than 1 year so there's no reason why I'd be out of warranty.
Maybe call back and get someone else. If you bought it less than 1 year ago, the swap should be available. Or ask why they're saying it's not an option.

Aaah, thanks for that info. I called again and the reason they gave me that replacement is not possible because Canada charges HTC custom tax on the shipped phone which is why they are only doing replacement for Canadian phones.
However, he said that if I have a US address (which I do) then they can ship a replacement device to that address. Now I'm contemplating if I should go forward with this.
The two things that worry me are:
1) I have some scratches on my screen which are not covered under warranty
and
2) My bootloader is unlocked
Will these 2 things cause my phone to be out of warranty causing HTC to charge $500 on my credit card for the replacement device they send me?

I did a swap by using a friends address. HTC reps didn't care, and were actually the ones who suggested it to me. So if you can, have it sent to a friend/family member in the US and go pick it up from them if possible. At worst they'll have to ship it to you, but you'll also have to ship your phone to them so they can ship it back to HTC to complete the swap. HTC will only send you a shipping label good for within the US if doing the swap.
Is there really a hardware issue with the power button? I ask because I do sometimes have trouble getting my N1 to acknowledge a power button press and wake up but have never had a problem when I push the power button to put the phone to sleep. Wouldn't it have a problem both turning on and off? Whenever I have the problem it seems like the phone is busy, usually something to do with the radio switching between WiFi and cellular. Or do I have a different problem?
I'd guess swap isn't available for AT&T N1's

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't realize you were in Canada.
I didn't say anything about my unlocked bootloader Many people have posted and said HTC swapped their unlocked device without issue, so /shrug. Maybe they ding me, maybe they don't.

Yeah, power button failure seems to be a common issue. Supposedly there is a little plastic piece in there that gets worn out.
You're right; I've only noticed the power button failure when attempting to turn ON the phone... Hmm.. Could be the way the contacts inside are wired, who knows?

Why?
They were sold from March until around late summer. The warranty is a year long either way.
I'll be in the same boat in a couple of months. I got the ATT version the first week it was sold and my power button is completely gone out for the second time. The first time, I sent it in with Cyanogen installed and they didn't care. I opted for repair, but the repair is to swap motherboards so, if the phone isn't scratched up, there's not much difference between repair and replace.
I was going to swap after Christmas but I've been using trackball wake and Invisible Lock Widget for about a month and don't miss the power button anymore. But I'll still probably get it fixed before the warranty is out, no reason not to.

right, but they quit selling the AT&T version after they shut the online store down. you could only get the TMobile from the Google Dev store, so I assume that HTC isn't sitting on a surplus of devices to swap.. just a guess, but I bet AT&T devices get repaired, not a new IMEI

Since my phone IS scratched up will HTC charge me for the replacement (scratches not covered in warranty) ?

Maybe they have some stocked up because after giving them my IMEI (which is that of the AT&T model), he said if I have an address in US then I can get my phone swapped (new IMEI).

I don't know, I just know what they said and did in my own repair experience. I asked if swapping meant I would get a new one or a refurbished one and they said it would most likely be refurbished because they rarely had new ones. This was months ago. Also, with a repair where they switch the motherboard, I think you actually get a new IMEI. Mine had a new IMEI anyway. I thought they switched phones until I read that the fix for a bad power button was to swap the motherboard, so I assume the IMEI is in it.
I had several scratches on my screen, an unlocked bootloader and chunks missing from the bottom and top of the phone where it was dropped. I did the swap option and I wasn't charged. As long as the screen scratches don't look worse than normal wear and tear I would think you would be fine.

My warranty wont be out for another year and a half I think, since Im in Austria, and European laws are some kind different. Anyway. My powerbutton hardly works and I would be very interested in anyone having experience with european htc. do they swap? do they charge? also could I send my phone to the us (friends) and get a replacement by the us htc since they seem kinda "nice". Im really not sure what to do. I get along with the lock screen widget and trackball wake but well a new phone doesnt sound bad either... so anyone knows anything about sending phones to the us from europe or replacing / repairing in the uk?
I was going to start a new thread about my experience with HTC customer service in regards to warranty but I suppose this will do just as good in here.
If you don't want to read my story a summary is at the bottom .
First I'll start of with my phone and the issues.
I bought my Nexus One AT&T version around June of 2010. Rooted it with without unlocking bootloader, ran a few different roms, then one day BAM vibration stopped working, but after a few screen on-offs or tapping my phone in my hand it would come back. After countless attempts to fix the issue such as master clears, flash back to original shipping, and finally in a last ditch effort UNLOCKED the bootloader so I had unrestricted access to rectify the problem. Nothing worked and finally had to accept the fact the little vibration motor had quit on me.
I called up HTC in December about the week before christmas and told them the problem which they agreed was a hardware issue. Not once did they ask if my bootloader was unlocked nor did I offer up that information. They offered me the two options of either a swap or send in my unit for repair. I choose the swap option for fear that they would get my phone, run tests, and not reproduce the issue since it was intermittent for me. Here is the scary part to do the swap they needed a hold on my credit card for $528.00 , risky to say the least since my bootloader was unlocked but seeing as it was hardware failure I was willing to risk it and hope the charge would drop off once they received the phone. In preparation to send my phone back I flashed back to completely stock removing root.
The next day the phone arrived FedEx . First thing I noticed was that my battery cover fit much more snug with no gaps and did not stick out just slightly above the top. Next the power button and volume buttons were much firmer. And of course the vibration was strong as an ox . Also to note it shipped with 2.2.1 (not D) and had the 5.08 radio, Hboot 35 and the AMOLED screen NOT SLCD. All in all the replacement seemed much better than my original, lol.
Now seeing as christmas was so close I wasn't able to FedEx it back to them (they provided the label) for almost a week. But once I sent it off it was overnighted to them and received without issue. Plus the hold on my credit card was also dropped!
So to sum it up I had an AT&T Nexus one with Bootloader Unlocked, bad vibration motor, got it swapped out under warranty, was not charged a dime, and am now even more of an HTC fan and happy to have a fully functional Nexus One.

That is great news. Thanks for posting.
I'm worried now because my power button isn't *totally* dead but the email they sent has the issue listed as "defective power button". So I hope they don't just press it once, see that it works, and call me a liar. I did tell the rep I spoke to that it was intermittent. Anyway, I hope my case works out like yours.
Mine is coming back from repair on Tuesday
I live in the UK and mine was piked up on the 30th Dec (phoned on the 29th) as my power button is dying slowly for the second time (first repair was in Sept '10 so not long ago!) and I was concerned that as I bought mine on the release date (5th Jan) I would be screwed if I left it any longer with only days left. That was until the lady at HTC UK told me that my warranty runs out on the 25th Dec 2011. Seems as an earlier poster mentioned that EU warranties are 2yrs which is nice for me.
I'm still wondering whats going to happen with this power button fiasco. The HTC agent wasn't aware of any known problem with them (not saying much really is it?) but said I could appeal the repair charges and some "arrangement" could be made (50% off or something to that effect). Anyway, that's just under a year away and I might start getting a bit pissed with them and start requesting that this isn't acceptable to keep sending my phone off every couple of months for 2 weeks at a time while a small part is replaced in my phone!
The first time it went back for the power button, (first time was in March for soft keys acivating when 1/3rd way down screen, got replaced for current unit with different touch screen revision) I had the phone unlocked with the infamous unlocked padlock symbol glaring at me every boot up. I sent it off and HTC just repaired the faulty button and flashed a locked 2.1 image, no questions (took almost a month to get back though!). Sweet! Now it was just a case of using one of the one-click root type apps and away I went.
Quick question guys: How likely is it that we'll get SLCD screens if we get a swap right now?
Anyone have any luck with purchasing from Costco? I'm within my 90 day return policy for my HTC One X. My Costco rep said they will be selling them around/on the 10th because they are going to sell the AT&T and Verizon models at the same time. But...that's what they could have just told me.
If it was an upgrade, make sure you ask them (Costco and T-Mobile) if you're account will still be eligible for an upgrade for the SGSIII. I think their system is a lil' different with the T-Mobile system and they might not have the authorization to do it right (might lose the upgrade privilege in their system). I think I read about a similar situation here on XDA. I'm not 100% sure, but rather be safe then sorry.
That's what I'm scared of. I went there last week and asked. I said I'm having issues with my One X (which I am. Having the issue where the top right corner of the screen feels like its peeling off, because I can press it back into place), and she said if you're in your 90 days, then you're fine. She just said that I need to make sure that if I'm within those days, either get a new phone or wait till the s3 is released. But she didn't seem too confident either...
I work in a kiosk and can confirm that you can exchange the phone within the 90 days as long as you keep the contract, which since it's after 30 days you are stuck with it anyways. Since there is no contract alteration, they should simply just process the return in our own system (not AT&T's) and then swap SIM cards to send you on your way. That is how is it supposed to be done, at least. Of course it all depends on if the rep you get is either lazy or has no clue what they are doing.
