[Q] NAND running also Android from SD Card? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

As from today I am running the Cyanogen 7 from MDJ v 2.2. very smooth on my HTC HD2. Which is cool of course. Now for the question:
Is it possible to have a NAND rom and then also use android (hyperdroid 1.7 with cyanogen 6.1) run from my SD-card?
For what purpose you might wonder. Well, I was not smart enough to save, sync or back up any text messages on the Hyperdroid build. I do not want to go through the 'whole process' of downgrading to wm 6.5 again and than having another turn at flashing the nand-rom only having to re-install everything yet again in the nand build...
Or is there another way to extract these messages?
tnx in advance for your help.

You can use sms backup+ from the market, or other sms backup programs. They back it up to your gmail account and then you can restore it with the same app in another build/rom.
To your original question, you probably can . I have moved a couple of builds to boot from sd card from magldr, but I only know how to do it with builds that use the cedesmith initrd method.

HD2 - FroyoStone Sense V3.1 - Datastorage

Hi,
i have a few problems using android on my HD2.
This is what i have installed:
- HSPL3
- Radio 2.10.50.08_2 ROM
- FroyoStone Sense V3.1
The first run was fine. No problems. Android bootet correctly and was running fast so i started to setup my phone. Then android crashed (probably because the battery was empty).
So i tried to boot the android again without success. When im format my SD-card and install android again (new data.img, rootfs.img, system.ext2) android is running fine again but all my data are lost.
Is there a way to get back the data of a android which does not work anymore? Where are the data of android stored at?
For the future: is there a way to avoid data loss if the phone crashes again?
Wrong section. Ask this ANDROID problems in Hd2 Adroid Forum.
and when you have formatted your SD card you cannot get data back.

Indeed, wrong topic.
But... you CAN get your data back after a format.
programs like getdataback and resque (sandisk) can do this.
Ok i see. Wrong topic ...
BUT: the question is not how to get data back from a formated sd-card. I saved the data befor formating. The question is how do i restore the data of the old android installation. When i just copy the data back to sd-card (data.img, rootfs.img, system.ext2) android isn't booting.
I'd like to think that all the data from android (settings, apps ...) are stored in data.img. Is there a way to extract the data?

Noob. Need Help Starting OVER From Scratch

After 2-3 weeks of using Android on my HD2, I'm totally sold! However, I installed Android on a card that also had lots of WinMo stuff on it. I would now like to start over from scratch on a totally clean 16GB card. I would like some info, however, before I start.
1. I have purchased several apps from the App Store. Should I uninstall them from my current SD card? My concern is that the store will not allow a second install to the new SD card.
2. Should I reformat the new card using the WinMo operating system or the formatting capability of my Vista laptop?
Any additional suggestions will be greatly appreciated. BTW, I'm intending to try darkstone SuperRAM FroYo v1.5 [kernel: Hastarin custom] first. Depending on how that goes, I may try MDJ FroYo HD v.4.6=-[FRG83D][kernel:MDJ S8.0]. I am currently running MDJ_FroYo_HD_v._4.4_MDJ_S7.6HD.
Thanks.

No need to worry about the store, the Windows Mobile Marketplace is tied to your Windows Live account, so when you switch back to Windows Mobile 6.5, or Windows Phone 7, they will already be outdated and useless anyways because WinMO6.5 will feel like crap, and some programs in WinMO6.5 won't work in WP7.
Backup whatever you think you will need on the SD Card.
I recommend refreshing the MicroSD card with SD Card Formatter 3
However, in Options, Format type = FULL (Erase ON), and Format Size Adjustment = ON.
This will wipe everything off from the MicroSD Card.
NAND Androids are pretty good so far, so if you are going that way, read up on MAGLDR and how to install. You will need HSPL 2.08 and RADIO 2.15.50.14
You will also want to read up on Clockwork Recovery.

Sorry, I was unclear. I was talking about the paid apps I installed from the Android Market. Should I uninstall them from my current Android installation before starting over?
Are you recommending AGAINST SD Android versions? That's what I've used so far and am pretty impressed. I also like to have the security of staying away from ROM installs (I have a European HD2, so I'm not sure about the memory issues). Plus, I've read that darkstone's SuperRAM FroYo v1.5 is the fastest HD2 Android version available. Speed would be my only criticism of Android on the HD2 so far.
Thanks for your response.

I think your answer is meant for NAND but if I understand correctly then the mentioned new ROM are SD card / RAM builds
My suggestion
1) for Dark stone build is to start from scratch. If you want to restore all your apps etc then the best option is to use Titanium Backup and then you can restore all your apps +/- settings. For Contacts / Calendar Google account sync is the best option
2) if you are going for MDJ 4.6 build then just copy your data.img from the 4.4 build and place it in the downloaded 4.6 build folder and you are all done. all your apps, data, settings etc will be as before...
Before you do anything make a backup of your important files in the SD card and the data.img file from the old 4.4 build ...very imp. Once formatted you can copy the file back into the SD card
For Formatting you are better off using the default format option in windows PC as it allows a better slower format and you can specify the cluster size (32 /64 kb). For me the SD formatter 3 program did not work and kept giving errors.
As for SD card ROM i think they are great but unlikely to develop further due to stagnation.
The RAM build has problems with using HTC SENSE base (as its too big for the RAM space avail) and i found them to be a little unstable with likely hood of data corruption which is easy to addresss if you keep a backup of data.img on your PC.
At the moment NAND is developing fast and with usable and stable HD desire builds available now , but is a little complicated to set up at first. However if it all goes wrong...it is definitely possible to go back to Win Mo and start all over as before. You should try both if possible and then go for the one you like.
My only probs with the SD build was of speed of bootup which was at 3 min, slight lag in the build and occcasional wakeup lag / SoD and i found it difficult..otherwise no complaints.

Which cluster size do you recommend, 32 or 64?
Which NAND version do you recommend? I'm looking for speed and simplicity. And I have the European (English) HD2. Isn't there an issue with memory?
If all fails with the Nand install can I just run the WinMo ROM I currently have installed from my PC?
Thanks for your response.

Nand Android+win6.5

Hi
I did not found anyware so I post my question here. I have android on Nand with sd card partitioned ext4+fat32 so can I install windows 6.5 custom rom so thy can ran together.
They can work together but not in your current configuration. WinMo must be in Nand and Android on SD card.
thanks for your reply. I gess it does not feats me, I meanly use android need win only for garmin, so I prefare speed and stable nand android.
There is currently work on a SD version of WM6.5 so eventually you will be able to do this.

clockwork

Hi All. If anyone is working on a CWM version of the WinMo 6.5?
There may, in the distant future, be a version of Windows Mobile 6.5 that loads from the sd card via MAGLDR. But never from Clockwork Recovery. CWM is only for Android, as it is actually a very lite little Linux distro built only for specific purposes involving the Android OS.
For now, if you want to dual-boot WM and Android, you have to flash a WinMo rom to nand and run an Android build from your sd card.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Of course, my mistake. The problem is that WinMo is necessary to me only occasionally (navigation). Re-install every time is a bad solution, but a quick backup/restore NAND flash using CWM would be ideal choice.
Sorry for my english.

Why don't you just use a SD card build to run Android then? That way you still havecWindows Mobile in the NAND memory and Android on SD card. Most SD card builds run very smooth just some have a few more quirks than others and the take longer to boot than NAND Android ROMs.

dxdy said it. Any Windows Phone build must be installed and run from the NAND memory. So you could backup your Android system (with NANDroid), backup SD-card, and install WP the way you'd normally do it. You'd always have your Android build backed up and packed away. It's easy to restore it, if you don't like WP.
Other than that, the only way to dualboot the two systems is with SD Android and some special SD-partitions, as far as my knowledge goes to.
