What's the difference?? Does the AOSP rom change the filesystem or something? Now that nit has released an AOSP theme for DJ05 would there be a benefit of running the ROM itself?
aosp rom is the original google code for the reference platforms.
Aosp theme is just the appearance of the notification bar, the menus, the selection appearance to that of the aosp rom
Hi there! The rom itself is a total conversion of your phone to ASOP, whereas the theme just provides the graphical appearance of ASOP. With the rom, you get the changes to the system as well. The theme does not change anything regarding the system. BTW, Try DJo5 Modem with Blackhole 3.0 and either Adryn's 12/30 kernel non-voodoo or the old UV Geeknik Kernal non-voodoo, I find that both work really well for battery life and provide a good android experience while we wait for the awesome dev's here to get Gingerbread working on Fascinate.
Cheers!

so the rom would change the entire platform of the phone?
I guess the real question I should be asking is AOSP Rom VS. the current system our phone has.. because im familiar with roms and themes in general but I guess i dont understand why everyone is raving over an AOSP rom being created.
Its pure Android. Even the most stripped down versions of the Fascinate roms have at least some Touchwiz in it. AOSP is Android bloat-free. Its where most customized roms like Cyannogenmod and MIUI are based on. So, if we get AOSP, that will make it a bit easier to port Cyangenmod and MIUI and such to the Fascinate, something that is an impossibility with Samsung bloated roms. Also, since it's so pure, it might prove faster the current roms since nothing is bloating it down.

I'm currently running Dark Revenge 3.0 on the EC10 kernel voodoo. I've flashed most of the current roms trying to find the best battery life I can find. I've read a little about AOSP roms. How do they differ from DR, SC and others? I don't really understand them. What kernel would I use? etc. I'm not going to try it immediately but I am considering it. Also, which one would be best for the Fascinate? Vanilla, Kaoscinate. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.
Basically AOSP roms are pure google android, they don't have any of the additions samsung/verizon added. The advantages of that? Well no Bloat for one, but that's easily taken care of by Superclean.
Honestly the vanilla AOSP rom lacks alot of features.
MIUI has some extra and pretty cool ones (mostly just more in depth options in the menus) As well as CM7(kaosinate).
However the amount of stuff that dont work on those roms outweighs any of the extra features in my opinion.
Plus not all the stuff from samsung is bad, like the power options in the pulldown menu and the built in task manager are great.
The only AOSP Rom I've used extensively is MIUI, and my battery life was awful compared to running superclean w/ Ec10.
AOSP is pure Android. Its the most cleanest, stock, non-OEM version out there. Its like getting it directly from Google themselves. Only use the kernel that the rom says to use. Basically, SC and DR are stripped down roms of the original Touchwiz Sammy bloated roms that originally run on a stock GalaxyS device. AOSP is the unviolated version of Android.

I'm running Jt's vanilla froyo as I type this. It is by far the best rom I have used to date. I am using the aosp voodoo kernel. From what I understand and I could be wrong and someone please feel free to correct me if I am but Aosp is like a straight Google rom with no Samsung or Verizon crap bloatware (useless apps) or touchwiz framework. It's kinda like an uncut rom pieced together from open source and is much smoother and much better in my opinion. It's kinda like building your own car from scratch. You can customize it any way you want and optimize it. SC, DR and BH roms are modified touchwiz roms. Basically a completed stock car and some of the parts have been changed. They are great roms but the devs are limited due to the fact that they are touchwiz framework. Vanilla is pure. At least this is how I understand it and if I am wrong then I apologize. Hope this helped.

What would I have to do to switch over? Full wipe or just cache and dalvik wipe or what? What about voodoo, do I need to disable then re-enable or just leave it like it is? Does the kernel come with the ROM or is it separate?
So I may have screwed up but I went ahead and tried it. I wiped cache and dalvik, flashed the vanilla voodoo kernel then the ROM. It went ok til I started getting alot of force closes in a row. So I figured it had deleted the apps when I flashed so no big deal. I'll just download them with Titanium, but no Titanium and no Market to get it from. Now what? I can't download the apps and I'm getting force closes because they're not there.
You have to do a FULL wipe. Data/cache/dalvik. Then flash in this order: Rom-Gapps-Kernel. Use the voodoo or non voodoo from jt's vanilla thread. Disable voodoo before wiping then after full wipe and flash, enable again

I've tried both and I don't really see the benefit of aosp. With adryn's sc rom and sbrissen's improvements, tw has more features and is more convenient. Plus now that jt has started devving for the Thunderbolt, updates to his fascinated aosp rom will slow at the very least.

Jt still updates aosp, and it is a very smooth rom, i use gmail for pic msg's anyway so mms is not a big deal to me, but I know it is for some
I feel the need to point out that the 0327 voodoo kernel over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12422388&postcount=1
has in-call bluetooth audio working wonderfully, at least according to my earlier testing of receiving calls today with my BT headset.
It seemed pretty stripped of anything-verizon, so I'm still trying to figure out why I would want the AOSP kernel where some drivers still aren't working. Guess I'll stick with this for a while.
I'm still running Fresh 3.5.0.1 I believe... I've tried the latest 2.3 Fresh Rom, but it's missing features I like, such as the pulldown notification bar toggles, and some other things. Also, there's no custom kernel yet based on the gingerbread kernel. Battery life isn't as good compared to using net's kernels.
Once HTC releases the kernel source then Im sure all the custom kernel development will make an appearance. I don't know about using 2.2 though its lacking some much needed gb features. I can live without the pulldown toggles I actually HATE them lol.

Yeah, I know we have to wait for HTC to release the source.
As far as GB vs FroYo... There aren't many features that I think FroYo is lacking... If I were running AOSP 2.2, the text selection / copy paste would be missing, but that's about it. Since I using Sense, the text selection is already good. It seems that much of the hype around GB is visual... The screen off animation, overscroll glow, darker theme, etc.
I'm not denying that there are tons of under the hood improvements; there are. But in real world usage, I get the same (if not better performance) on 2.2 as of right now. I'm just waiting on the kernels to make the jump.
Side note: Is netarchy the only Sense kernel? It seems that I can name several AOSP kernels off the top of my head (godmode, tiamat, savaged zen) but only one sense kernel.

I love me some AOSP / pure Google, but both jt's custom and Cyanogen nightlies suffer from volume issues, data stability, black screen of death, etc. At some point I believe jt mentioned a lack of source code from Samsung as being root of the problems.
Seeking stability, I recently went back to stock Froyo / TouchWiz 2.2.2. It's been amazingly trouble free, all things considered...but TouchWiz is driving me crazy!
Are there truly any Gingerbread ROMs that don't suffer these problems? AOSP isn't a must, but as close to pure as possible would be best.
If stock Froyo 2.2.2 is really the most stable, then who's customized stock is the best?

I was about to ditch this thing 2 months ago. After months of missing phone calls 2 trouble tickets 3 replacements and having tried every rom modem kernel combo possible. I find it funny that all the bull**** I went through for 8 months stopped the day I flashed ec09 modem and vanilla gingerbread and I haven't looked back. Now running Pool Party (VGB based) with jt's 0912 kernel and still the ec09 modem it's the perfect setup for me. I have NOT missed a call and my data speeds are consistently at or above 1.1mbps since going to an aosp/mtd rom. It's also amazing that in places where my phone was useless before, I am able to use it as one would expect now. Anytime someone asks what's the best "rom" it is such a loaded question with each individual having their own unique setup desires of what they expect out of the device. But to say "All aosp Rom have major issues" you might as well have just gone to jt's house and spit in his face. To OP you need to find the time to read and try all roms yourself. Or you could listen to half cocked kinda uneducated responses and base your rom choice on that. But I'll continue to take pictures with the TouchWiz camera that was ported to pool party and enjoy what has been a great last 2 months on an aosp/mtd rom and continue to enjoy my device and try to repress the previous 8 months crap I put up with on touch wiz. @OP We have more options now than we have ever had on this device but you need to try all options yourself and see if a particular option will suit your needs and expectations.
Also keep in mind that all options are not available on xda. cough cough rootzwiki cough cough.
good day.

Aosp: android open source project. It's 100% android software with no additions, modifications or bloatware added on by phone manufacturers. Touch wiz is android modified by Samsung which has a different, inferior file system. So roms are either aosp based or TW based( for Samsung phones) and are not compatible with each other. They both have their pros and cons

I tried out TSM Pool Party a couple of times. The first time I tried 1.3 using the JT kernel dated 0829 and neither the torch nor the camera flash would work. Back to Geewiz 1.1.1. Today I tried TSM Pool Party 1.4 with JT's 0912 kernel. I couldn't reactivate the phone and when I pressed volume up or down on activation or on a call the incall volume shot from loud to almost nonexistent. Tried Vanilla GB and then 0829 kernel but neither fixed the problem. Back to GeeWiz 1.1.1 again.
Speedwise I was really impressed, but I need functionality over speed. So I apologize to all the developers out there working on AOSP but they still needs more work before they are RC ready. However kudos to all the progress that has been made.

pretty much had the same experience...
I agree that the AOSP roms can be functionally messed up sometimes, but that is what a lot of people prefer.
Personally, I like the TouchWiz interface (it's one of the things that drew me to the Fascinate over the Droid X). If you do too, then you have two great options...
GeeWiz - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211337
Powerwashed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199851
The GeeWiz rom is, in my opinion, exactly what the author describes it as... WISH (What It Should Have been). It's essentially the Fassy the way most users would have preferred. If you are new to flashing, highly consider this rom (which is cleaned up and pre-rooted).
The Powerwashed rom (would personally stay with the Froyo version for now) is a little more customized than the GeeWiz version. It is a great option for those who want the extra changes listed in the developer's post already applied.
Both are outstanding roms for those who like the TouchWiz interface. IMHO, you can't go wrong with either one.
Right now, I'm running GeeWiz 1.1... though I see I need to flash CWM and update to 1.1.1!
So, I'm a Droid X dev, but total noon on Samsung . Is this a group or GB build? Thanks!

Gee wiz is a eh 09 based Gb rom (for now) developed by djp952. It's as close to stock as you're gonna find. He also developed a ed 05 froyo Rom with the same characteristics

Doing fine on PWED05 right now.
Due for an upgrade so as soon as I get a new phone my Fascinate will be running some variant of GB.
Powerwashed ED05 is my choice for Best Froyo 2.2.2
i don't want to flash new GB ROM based-on EI20 or EH09, I want to wait for stock/official Gingerbread ROM. But if I flash GB ROM, i choose PowerWashed GB ^_^ ( but gain more battery drain, just because modem and ROM...)
Sorry if this is a naive question, but we talk a lot in updates to CM7 and other ROMS about what's been ADDED to the new ROM releases. But what exactly is the difference between AOSP and CM7? What can we say are the top 3 things done to an AOSP ROM to create a new version of CM7? And why do ROMs need to have ADW or LauncherPro attached? Can't a ROM function with just a stock AOSP launcher or is it just too limited?

CM7 is actually far from stock AOSP. The list of mods, customizations, and optimizations that the CM team includes in CM7 is huge.
As far as launchers, the standard AOSP launcher is very basic, that's why CM includes ADW. If you want the stock AOSP look, ADW can be configured to look exactly like it.
Yeah, CM7 is far from AOSP now. Without the plethora of extra features/modifications, there's no way I can use AOSP over Sense or MIUI.
There's far too many to list the differences, so you're just going to have to flash CM7 to see for yourself.

Well yes it looks like AOSP. But it has many features that AOSP doesn't. It has 4 different LS's (Lock-screen), LS wallpapers, LS calendar notifications, LS music widgets and music controls, notification pull down power widgets, you can toggle the notifications on top such as taking away the clock or 3 different battery styles. You can have multiple gesture controls within the SMS app and the LS itself to jump you to applications right from the LS. You have incognito option in your browser, and so much more options in the Contacts app.
All that I've mentioned is not available in regular AOSP ROM's, and that's just a fraction of what CM has to offer.
run Faux's AOSP ROM to get a sense of the differences. It's not fully AOSP (CM Camera and a few other things) but it's pretty close.
I've installed Zipnet's ICS on my mytouch 4g and now my phone sometimes reboots by itself. its doing it numerous times. When I turn off screen, and just try to turn back on, the buttons would light up, but the screen is still off. And then after a few moments, it restarts.
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks
I've had that problem with a lot of older ICS ROMs. Try something newer or at least a newer kernel.
Do you have a recommended ICS Rom that I should look into? I'm currently using Zipnet's v.4.05. Also, for the kernel, do I have to look for one that is specifically used on ICS? or can any kernel do? Sorry I'm still new to these things,
Thanks

Kernels are Android version specific. You'll need an ICS kernel. I would hate to recommend a ROM because I don't want to insult any dev's. Also, I don't try them all.
Look for anything released within the last month.
Here is a rundown of some ROM types.
AOSP: Also called "Vanilla." Pure or as close to pure Google source as possible. Not really any extra frills.
AOKP: AOSP plus tweaks and mods. These ROMs will contain the ROM Control app and are very customizable. Includes changable battery icons with ROM Control.
CM9 - Compiled (at some point) from CyanogenMod 9 source. Contains AOSP plus CM tweaks and extras including cpu control and power widget in status bar.
Sense 3.6/4: ICS Sense. 3.6 is a little more bloated than Sense 4, but both are nice. Camera does not work yet, but devs are hard at work on this as usual.
MIUI v4: MIUI allows themes galore as well as backup/restore between versions. Weekly updates.
Some others you might look into are MexDroidMod, Paranoid Android and DianXin.
