I'm still running Fresh 3.5.0.1 I believe... I've tried the latest 2.3 Fresh Rom, but it's missing features I like, such as the pulldown notification bar toggles, and some other things. Also, there's no custom kernel yet based on the gingerbread kernel. Battery life isn't as good compared to using net's kernels.
Once HTC releases the kernel source then Im sure all the custom kernel development will make an appearance. I don't know about using 2.2 though its lacking some much needed gb features. I can live without the pulldown toggles I actually HATE them lol.

Yeah, I know we have to wait for HTC to release the source.
As far as GB vs FroYo... There aren't many features that I think FroYo is lacking... If I were running AOSP 2.2, the text selection / copy paste would be missing, but that's about it. Since I using Sense, the text selection is already good. It seems that much of the hype around GB is visual... The screen off animation, overscroll glow, darker theme, etc.
I'm not denying that there are tons of under the hood improvements; there are. But in real world usage, I get the same (if not better performance) on 2.2 as of right now. I'm just waiting on the kernels to make the jump.
Side note: Is netarchy the only Sense kernel? It seems that I can name several AOSP kernels off the top of my head (godmode, tiamat, savaged zen) but only one sense kernel.

i would say fresh evo 3 i love it
I take both of these ROMS are 4G compatible?
Yep, fresh or Ava for sure!

Thanks for the input I'm gonna spend the next couple of days flashing these ROMS, If anyone else has any opinions please share.
I'm also a fan of the more AOSP-styled ROMs and agree Cyanogen is my favorite but i can't forego the 4g. So, I'm using the latest Fresh ROM with the AOSP lockscreen (just remove the HTC lockscreen and dont set your alarm using the stock clock), launcherpro, and an AOSP theme that gives you the AOSP notification bar and other AOSP-styled looks. Here's a link to that theme's thread:

Note: I use V1 and not V2 because I think the bootanimation for V2 is crappy.

Are you running sense or launcher pro?
Evo after my Apple
I am running Myn's also. Didn't use any other kernel, and staying with sense, I'm liking it. Battery isn't bad and phone works fine. I don't see any others that I like really...I would like to ditch sense, but I don't want to have to find mail app alternatives and do those other steps you have to do if you run that app to rid sense.
recent ROMs i've tried:
baked snack
evio
myn
fresh
cm6 nightlies
burntdroid
virus
ac
vaelpak
back to evio - fast, stable, nice theme, nice screen transitions (myn's were nice at first but got old and slows things down a bit) and a lot of his work is used across other ROMs. also, another important factor for me is the extra space on internal storage - i have 116 apps all on internal storage with 150mb left!
other:
manup theme
kings #6 bfs kernel
I'll throw my vote in for Ava-froyov9 ROM.
I used tons of roms, and I like Cyanogen a lot(and am using it now), but as for the Sense roms, Ava was my favorite. Battery life was great, everything worked, and an easy AOSP lockscreen flash and ADW launcher made me feel better =P
I actually had lots of strange issues with Myn's rom and in the end, it came down to which ROM ran my NHL app the best.
If I wasn't playing around with different ROM's right now I'd be using Ava's
ava-froyo v9
thanks for all the recommendations everyone. I too am wanting to keep my 4g abilities so am worried about the limited roms as of now.
Today I have been using Frost v2.2.2 if you like AOSP this is for you, The only issue I noticed if I overclock in setCPU too much the phone crashes.
I think I'm gonna go with baked Snack
Ok ive been doing all this rooting and customization for about 3 months now and i have what i think is a big noob Question!
Q. What is the purpuse of other roms, other then stock or cyanogen?
-Do they offer different things that i dont know about, i mean i know some allow you to get netflix and better batterylife but isnt the batterylife thing really lie in the kernel?
But other then that why get a different Rom if im going to customize it the same way i have now?
And im totally sorry if this sounds dumb...still trying to really get into all this modding thing.

Well you bring an interesting spin on a simple thought. With all the options out there you can make a Sense ROM look AOSP or make a AOSP ROM look like sense... 8
Some of the ROMs are just personal preference. I use Cyanogen(mod) because that is what i've used for my entire "android life", it's what i know, it's what i like. I know what going to be included, i know where to find stuff... . I know eViL Dee has some follower in the same case, as well as TeamRoyal. It's a comfort level i guess. I mean with so many Sense Based ROMs, so many AOSP ROMs and some other, it's all about minor tweaks. Like Cyanogen(mod) and Faux123 both offer amazing AOSP ROMs. But Faux is a little more "pure" when it comes from an AOSP end point.

#1 what is AOSP lol
#2 so really the other roms are the same thing with sort of a different look but in reality you can basically achieve that look by modding it ..
#3 so there really isnt a difference in roms is basically wat your saying..
Don't forget miui, used to hate the ios_esk ui, but there is alot of customizability without having to go through adw or lp. Super smooth super fast. You can change everything from boot ani to fonts/custom lock screen in their there manager.
Use to be a big aosp user, but got a little plain and boring. If I was still on my mt3g I would be using aosp, but with our hardware we can afford a little more eye candy and convenience without performance sacrifice.
I usually rock between evil's vf3 and royal miui. Both get about 2 days of battery life with absolutely no lag

AOSP: android open source project. More of pure vanilla android without all the extra framework and great for performance. I've gotten up to 3500 in quadrant score on aosp and 3 days of battery life.
Sense roms: built off htc sense framework. Tons of pretty interactive widgets but sacrifice battery and performance. Your stock mt4g came with sense stuff like facebook and weather clock animated widgets. And yes you can get sense looking widgets in an aosp, but htc offers much more than you can find on the market.
Miui: kind of like ios meets android. Not everybody likes it,
You can technically make any rom type look like any other rom type. But in the core and functionality, they are world apart

The thing is you can replicate the UIs of other phones but you never never perfectly mimic the functionality gained from a specific UI, you cant get certain MIUI features in CM, or get all the integration of Sense into others rom. You can also make you phone look like a Droid, Sony, LG, Sammy, etc... I like MIUI now since it seems to be much quicker than other roms, I've used android since like late 09, and I must say MIUI is so different even though it's android at the core.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong on any of this
Cm was developed to work on most android phones. Most of the AOSP roms that you see in the glacier development section are based off of CM but customized to work better for our phone.
Now looking at other roms for instance take Royal Ginger.
"Is built and compiled from CM7 source code with lots of the CM7 extras and other assorted bloatery removed + a custom kernel & numerous tweaks and optimizations added in. It's sleak, it's mean, and it's fast"

So it came from CM, lets look at the 2.0 channel log to see exactly what the Developer did to it and then after trying CM if the changes look better it may be worth trying
- entire ROM completely rebuilt and compiled from scratch using latest 2.3.4 CM7 source code. i don't just take in all of the updates/code/commits willy nilly. i check them all out and cherry pick the ones i want .. test some out, decide whether or not to keep them in, etc. (more on that later)
- bundled with my first kernel build: ckisgen-smartass-CM7-v1.0 . this is compiled using a base of zinx's latest CM7 stock source but i've added in the smartass governor (with a little inspiration from dumbfuqs source code, thanks df!) and then tweaked a couple of addt'l settings. i've bumped the default max clock to 1.1ghz. this kernel will overclock to 1.8ghz. i've got LOTS of plans for this in the future. i'm going to be working hard on it. i went with something like this for maximum compatibility with this latest 2.3.4 and all the changes that it's brought about. I def gotta give a big THANKS to FauxMoney for the colorful late night conversations and inspiration to make my own kernel...thanks man.
- FULLY working google Talk with video and audio working BOTH ways (ok maybe not 100% .. switching to rear camera FC's but we're working on that..still really solid)
- moved basically all of the remaining 'extra' CM apps and a couple of others to user storage so that they can be easily removed using the traditional uninstall method via the manage applications menu (settings/applications). i call this one the "E-Z AOSP-ify" update. these apps are:
* terminal
* xda
* DSP manager (this is the new one with the EQ presets .. very nice)
* FM
* ROM Manager
* Spare Parts
* stk
* Swype
* Torch
* YouTube
- TONS and TONS of other stuff .. optimizations everywhere .. GPS, radio, data, ETC!!!!!

After using CM for a while this may look good so read all the comments to see if anyone was having issues and whether they liked it, was it a battery hog to slow to fast etc. Any new rom will have some minor bugs but if all the new pro's outweigh the couple cons try it.
I also saw that it was on version 2.1, so I read that channel log (I won't post here) to see what fixes or changes were made. Maybe a new theme, kernal, some new app's.
It becomes fun, get involved, learn as you go try new stuff and see what works for you. Always ask if you have a question, everyone around here is really helpful.
I just used Royal Ginger as an example to show you the difference between CM and another AOSP rom that is based of CM
Edit: Also look at the pictures that they add, most everything can be changed but a rom's pics may just look really cool that you just have to try it.
Bottom line, try it all and settle with the one you like. It'll keep you busy and entertained for months

So Pershoot's kernel provides the standard kernel stuff like overclock and stability.
Does it offer loopdevice support because I wanna get Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, etc. working in a chroot.
I can only speak as far as CyanogenMod goes...it offers nothing. A month or two before, and all the time before that, it was a MUST. But since cyanogenmod was updated to the new kernel, the stock cm kernel is almost even better than pershoots. No one wants to say it out loud and i get flamed for even bringing it up, but if you look at the pershoot thread activity before and after the kernel update, it's at least 5 times slower than it used to be. I'm obviously not the only one who feels this way but the only one blunt enough to say it.
Pershoots kernel is used on other roms besides cm, but that is by far the majority of his users. Just giving my opinion from the CyanogenMod side of things. Can't speak for other roms.
I personally don't use his because there are only 3 profiles. I'm sure there is a reason why but I prefer the scary govenor and smartass a little. His doesn't have it.

Now, I know that cyanogenmod is probably the most popular of all the aosp roms however, that's irrelevant because this is about the evo, not other phones. So, in your own words, which rom is the best aosp rom for the evo? Excluding miui, because that's a different sort of aosp.
Thanks.

Decks Rom to me is the best due to being so much cleaner and faster. The way it runs on my phone is amazing. Battery life. Performance. Just flawless for an aosp

I tried SalvageMod, didn't care for it since I got FC's and there doesn't seem to be much updates.
I have gone between CM7 and Decks a lot. So much lately that I am driving myself nuts. I want to stick with one.
I like Decks because it is a slimmer version and runs better. It also doesn't have as much misc. stuff/apps with it.
I like CM7 because of the nightlies, which also gives me headaches because I am always flashing, then if something sucks I go back to a previous version, sometimes having to wipe, etc.
I am most likely going to end up sticking with Decks since it runs better for me, and so I don't get the urge to try out a new nightly. LOL
I am not aware of any other AOSP ROM.
Lets face it, if it werent for CM7 we wouldnt have most of the AOSP roms for this phone that we do. DECKS is the best IMO. Its CM7 but tailored specifically for the EVO. Its VERY NOTICEABLY faster. More clean. Cant go wrong with it.
My phone has never run better than with SalvageMod! Even Decks which held that place previously. There are some features that I miss but haven't looked back for a second.
Lithid is an incredible Dev, and has produced a unique build of AOSP that will stand out from the rest. He also supports it directly, meaning you will hear from HIM if you ask a question.
I have tried cm7, decks, savaged zen and OMGB. None have quite the edge of SalvageMod. However, OMGB would be my second choice but I like something a bit more custom.

I see what you did there.
I tried Salvage Mod briefly, but there were some little details that bugged me; the notification pulldown located at the bottom of the screen, lack of Theme Chooser, and a couple other minor settings not available.
It's the small details that makes or breaks a rom for me. Deck passes all the tests, and runs much better on my particular phone than the full CM 7.1
Homage and gratitude are definitely due to cyanogen.. Without his team, we wouldn't have many of the improvements available to us.

Its a toss up, using Decks rom atm but with any AOSP rom I get bad wifi reception unless I am right next to my modem. That's the only thing I can say for Sense roms is that the wifi connection is better, at least in my case.
I'll admit, I was a huge CM Fanboy and deservedly so it's probably one of the most developed and feature laden ROMs available. MIUI never appealed to me. But, there was always something wonky happening then once most of the bugs were ironed out and I actually used it often enough I got tired of ADW.
I started flashing frank707's .zip that removed some of the extra apps and especially ADW and replaced it with launcher2. Then Deck came along and did it for me with an even more optimized ROM. Somewhere along the way I flirted with SalvageMod 1.2.1 but had some stability issues that were caused by the SavagedZen kernel that I stupidly blamed the ROM for. Flash forward to last week, I finally tried out SalvageMod 1.4 and gave it an honest chance and I think it's probably one of the most well developed and stable/fast ROMs that I've tried so far. It's different from CM based ROMs if that's what you're used to but it's simplicity is actually refreshing. There's some features that I'd like to have added but it's nothing that makes the ROM unusable.
I say give SM 1.4 a real chance, I don't think that it (or the devs for that matter) get the recognition deserved.
I've installed Zipnet's ICS on my mytouch 4g and now my phone sometimes reboots by itself. its doing it numerous times. When I turn off screen, and just try to turn back on, the buttons would light up, but the screen is still off. And then after a few moments, it restarts.
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks
I've had that problem with a lot of older ICS ROMs. Try something newer or at least a newer kernel.
Do you have a recommended ICS Rom that I should look into? I'm currently using Zipnet's v.4.05. Also, for the kernel, do I have to look for one that is specifically used on ICS? or can any kernel do? Sorry I'm still new to these things,
Thanks

Kernels are Android version specific. You'll need an ICS kernel. I would hate to recommend a ROM because I don't want to insult any dev's. Also, I don't try them all.
Look for anything released within the last month.
Here is a rundown of some ROM types.
AOSP: Also called "Vanilla." Pure or as close to pure Google source as possible. Not really any extra frills.
AOKP: AOSP plus tweaks and mods. These ROMs will contain the ROM Control app and are very customizable. Includes changable battery icons with ROM Control.
CM9 - Compiled (at some point) from CyanogenMod 9 source. Contains AOSP plus CM tweaks and extras including cpu control and power widget in status bar.
Sense 3.6/4: ICS Sense. 3.6 is a little more bloated than Sense 4, but both are nice. Camera does not work yet, but devs are hard at work on this as usual.
MIUI v4: MIUI allows themes galore as well as backup/restore between versions. Weekly updates.
Some others you might look into are MexDroidMod, Paranoid Android and DianXin.
