Really disappointed. I need to use it in another phone and can't believe I can't format it.
Hopefully Newegg will exchange it.

Would a MetroPCS Samsung Code work? It has Windows 6.5 and I'm 99% sure has a MicroSD spot.
Not all WM devices can do it. Tilt is probably an anormally. My HTC Pure can't format it.

I'd give it a shot. You really aren't risking anything other than a little time getting it set up to test.

Same here!!! It ended up not working and I exchanged my Focus for a Captivate.
WOW. I'm speechless.
Once I rooted and put a custom ROM on my Captivate it seriously OWNED the Focus.
And I had to send my SD card in to Newegg for a replacement. WP7 is a failure.

Wasn't able to get my Tilt to even see it. As far as I can tell there's only one person on here who was able to get their Tilt to reformat it, whereas most people (myself included) failed.
I heard the Nokia N8 and the Sony Vivaz will format the card.

Don't know anyone who owns one and a replacement is already on the way. Thanks though.
nvm !
Meh
So it turns out that my Tilt-reformatted card must've been a fluke due to the fact that my 32GB Class 4 Kingston card flaked out on me. While I was able to successfully reformat that card (which worked for a day or two before causing the phone to become unstable), I was not able to do so for a Sandisk 8GB Class 4 card that works perfectly in my colleague's Focus.
As such, I officially retract my previous belief that the Tilt is a viable platform for reformatting microSDHC cards since it clearly isn't capable of formatting "locked" cards.

Oh great. I should've waited for things like this to develop before preordering. Hope it's nothing major.
To be fair, it wouldn't be a true HTC phone without some sort of major defect.
haven't had any problems
It could be a destructive application.

Several people seem to have it on the Android forums for the Evo: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g...disappearing-defect-included-8gb-microsd.html
Really hope this doesn't become a major problem.
I don't consider a SD card problem a "massive defect". If it was the slot or the phone then yes. I'm sure HTC will replace the cards no problem. I already have my own card so? Why you people seem to be freaking out of this its nothing. BIG DEAL.

Well it may not be the cards that is the problem. It could be a hardware issue where due to the awkward positioning of the card the phone doesn't read it sometimes, which would be a significant problem that would near impossible to fix.
I haven't experienced any problems.
I use my own 16GB card and dont have any problems. Maybe the shipped card is bad - but it is not a device deffect.
I had that exact same problem with a 4gb card from microcenter in my hero until one day, it completely died. After I replaced the card, the problem went away. It's probably just the card.

I remember the 5/19 engadget review mentioned:
"The microSD card lives underneath the battery, so we'd probably recommend just getting a nice big one (good luck finding a 32GB!) and leaving it put -- especially since HTC has chosen one of the most unusual slot designs we've ever seen on a phone. Basically, the card rests loosely in a trench and is secured using a plastic peg overhead; press it down to hold the card in place. A fingernail is enough to pop the peg up again, and the card just falls right out. It's such a bizarre design that we can only assume it was necessitated (versus, say, a conventional spring-loaded slot) by virtue of the EVO's tightly-packed circuitry. Nothing a good, old-fashioned teardown won't definitively answer, we're sure."
So is this a hardware or officially resolved software or combo issue or will we not really know until after the June 4th launch (asks an eager beaver)?

First of all, we still don't know what the issue is exactly - hardware, software, or a combination of the two.
And if the problem is widespread, new EVO users, who may not be tech savvy or have spare SD cards, will not be happy and this is the publicity HTC doesn't need.
And finally, if it is a bad batch, I'd like to know how HTC plans to address it and what we would need to do to get the fix.
I have seen this issue with my evo. I will test out 4gb card and see if the issue goes away.
No issues for me.

Geez...It's a freaking storage card. You gotta love the hysteria that results when a story is headlined with the words "Massive Defect".
A massive defect would be "half the screen goes dead when used in temps of 70 F or higher" or "phone bricks when you install a memory manager".

Again, if you bothered to read the article or prior posts before commenting, you'd know that nobody knows the root of the problem. It is not necessarily a faulty storage card. It could also be a problem with the hardware where the memory card does not stay connected to the phone, which would be a major issue, and replacing the memory card would not solve it. I know I'd be very upset if every time I wanted to take a picture the phone told me there was no available memory card to save it to. It also could be a software problem, which hopefully should not be too difficult to solve.
According to a poster on the Android forums,
"I contacted sprint about this problem tonight, they told me they knew about it already. Sprint said the only phones that have this problem are the ones that google gave to their employees and to the reviewers. It was a software issue, apparently the issue was only with the first 2,000 phones google gave out. With the phones being released on June 4th, the software issue is resolved. I am switching form the Crap pre to the HTC Evo 4G, and I am glad to now be a part of Android Forums. Thanks guys and have a good night."
http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g...sappearing-defect-included-8gb-microsd-2.html
So let's hope that is the case, but who knows how reliable either the guy is or the person he talked to at Sprint. We'll have to wait and see if it happens to us.
Well.. after yelling at tech support people for I don't know how long, they made sure my latest replacement had the new firmware update.
The Bad News First.... it is no better. It crashes, but now it seems that sometimes it catches itself first and throws itself out onto the home screen. What happens then is, that you can't enter an app (including things like the market and people). I just loads and kicks right back onto the home screen before booting. To get this to stop you have to reboot. So instead of crashing now, it essentially forces you to reboot the phone to use it. Fantastic stuff Dell.
The Even Worse.... None of the other 4 phones I had ever had any error pertaining "directly" to the memory card (though I still think the memory card is causing all of this). The phone now 2 has given me the non-compatable card error, and the first time was at the very first initial boot up of the phone. Bravo Dell.
So Im sick of worrying about the warranty. By the time this gets fixed the phone is going to be so out of date, most of the apps won't play on it anyhow. What they are doing is criminal, but there is nothing that is getting done unless a bunch of you jump on the class action table with me.
But anyhow.. to my real question. I am done with this mess and am going to swap a new card in. The phone came with NoDo, but when it booted it updated with the security patch. What is going to happen when I swap cards after an update? And if so what can or should I do? Any help is appreciated... thanks in advance.
Replacing the sd card requires a hard reset and you will be back at the OS version you were before you did the reset. The procedure to replace the card is here:

My brother's phone has a layer of dust particles under the screen, probably covering like 75% of the screen real estate. He doesn't want to go through the hassle with calling Dell and getting a replacement sent out so we're probably going to go to the Microsoft Store where we purchased the phones and see if they will do a swap. I've heard they're very helpful in that regard.
They really need to do some quality control on this - the dust issue is pretty terrible and I would have thought it would have been fixed by now. We've had the phones since November/December and I thought the dust issue was a one off flaw.
Once I get a unit with no dust, Im pulling the card. The error THE STOCK CARD keeps giving me is that there is an issue with the memory card. It then tells me to "either remove the storage card or replace it with a new compliant one". And the sticker may said void under it, but no where on it right now does it say void.
So if they have a problem, I took a picture with the camera and the phone SPECIFICALLY states to "REMOVE THE CARD". There problem now... I don't care what they say anymore. They had their chance to fix it... the product is telling me to do it.... and I don't see "Void" anywhere. Took pictures and covered my tracks. Time to get this going myself.

If the device can get past the loader screen it can be flashed.
I assume MS does but only at the internal level for testing purpose...after all they are constantly loading and testing new functions and bug fixes.
OEMs would have the ability but not at a customer available option. After all, how do they refurbish devices. How did they load 7355 on a 7004 device. You would not be able to call them and request a flash. I doubt they would offer it in a warrenty violation scenario also. The question was asked on the Dell community forums, is there a way to send a device in for repair....that is now currently out of warrenty....and pay for the repair....of course...no answer from Dell.
Hi,
I'm really hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.
I've had my Desire HD for about eight months now, and counting the one I lost about 10 minutes ago, I've gone through a total of ten memory cards.
Each time I get a message saying it's been unexpectedly removed, or that it is blank or damaged. I've tried Sandisk and Samsung cards, all Class 2 / 8GB.
I hardly ever remove the memory card, but when I do I am always careful to unmount it. The same as when I connect it to my PC via USB.
After the 8th memory card died, the Gingerbread update had just been released, and I was hoping it was due to a software issue. However, as expected, my 9th memory card died shortly after. I contacted HTC who sent me ONE replacement SD card, to which I explained that I wanted my phone repaired. Courier picked it up, they said that it was being caused by a software issue and simply done a reset.
I knew it wouldn't work, and low and behold my 10th memory card has just died.
I am now contemplating going to Phones4U and asking for a replacement, as someone else has mentioned in the forum. However, there was one thing I wanted to check with people first.....
I connect my phone to my car stereo via Bluetooth, which I use as a handsfree and to listen to music that is stored on my phone. Now, normally I just turn my car stereo off. How likely is it that this could be causing the card failure? I don't see how, as the memory card isn't physically being removed, but I wanted to get people's thoughts on this before I start pushing Phones4U for a replacement!
I don't think your cards are physically damaged. They just need to be formatted.

I don't think it's my cards that are physically damaged, but it must be a hardware issue with the phone. Each of the memory cards either say it's been removed, or that it's blank or damaged. Some of them I can put into my PC and repair. Some of them worked again after I had formatted them, however 5 out of the 10 would not even be picked up by my PC.
I have now emailed Phones4U, so I shall see where I get (if anywhere) with them.
What HTC firmware are you using? There was an issue with 1.72 that caused symptoms such as yours. That is one of the issues that got the OTA pulled.
I have the phone number for Phones4U's written complaints team, the team that you always get told don't accept incoming calls. Should you need it, just let me know.
Sounds a very similar problem to mine mate........

Hi there s32bauer,
I think i may have seen the same problem, although i have only tried 2 /sdcards and they BOTH work on the PC or lappy afterwards.
See this thread for more on my issue,
Hope you have a little more luck than myself.
I have had some great help off some great people on here at XDA though......Thanks guys...
P.S. Have you been running any custom ROM's? If so, what were they?
i had the same problem when on 1.72, i went through 3 16sdhc cards. i fixed this by rooting and using leedroids gingerbread.
all three cards which were broke i managed to fix and they are now in good use in my wifes wildfire and our galaxy tabs, the 32gb card i now have in my phone has been in there for about 4 months now with no more unexpected removals.
The only other time i had this problem was with my motorola milestone, it also ate cards - but the phone was next to useless as it was sig locked and never updated (got a full refund as flash never arrived in the 9 months i owned the pos).
Gone through 10 memory cards that's absolutely insane!! Even more insane that a OTA can be released that causes it.
I think your owed some replacements if the cards are screwed.

I've been through quite a lot. The first two died on 1.32 I believe. Then I lost SIX on the 1.72 firmware. Another one once I'd upgraded to Android 2.3, and then the final one the other once I'd received it back from HTC.
The number for Phones4U would be brilliant, thanks!

You're not ripping anyone off. You purchased the N2A card. Now it's yours, you can do with it as you wish. You're not burning it to sell to someone else. Hey, maybe you want a backup of your card in case the one you have messes up.
You can either use WinImage to back up the whole card and burn the image onto the new one.
Or if you have a mac or linux box, you can use the "dd" command to do essentially the same thing.

So, this post was brought to my attention, and is a very interesting one. At the surface, this act looks as if it is a warez post, but a little background makes me think otherwise (perhaps putting it in a grey area).
The n2a card, is actually little more than CM7 preinstalled on a new(?) SD card. Because CM7 is an open and free project, I do not feel that cloning a purchased card is actually stealing anything... indeed, the same result can be achieved with the user putting CM7 on the card the same way as n2a does it. Additionally, places advised that you really paying for the card, with the convince of having cm7 already on it.
For now, I am leaving this, but will note that tis is pending further review and discussion, and things may change...

Hey hey! Yep, I am now a NC mod (among other forums)...
Anyway, as is it, I am leaving the thread as is. Leaving personal feelings aside, there is nothing wrong right now. Keep it clean guys, and all is good..

I don't think that would be piracy any more than making your own card. N2A doesn't do anything special to their cards. You buy the service off putting Android on the card, that's it. N2A owns nothing on that card.
That being said, it still would probably be easier to follow the directions in this forum and make a new card.

Let me get this straight. You were too lazy to make your own card, you bought one already made and now you come to us to see if you can essentially rip off the people that make the N2A card so you don't have to spend any other of your tightfisted dollars? I hardly think so!
Maybe someone on here will forward this to the N2A people in case you were dumb enough to use a screen name that was close enough for them to identify their customer......

Okay let me set you straight I had a adata card and tried to make one and I failed maybe it was the card brand??????? So no I was not lazy.
Anyways I bought one that the guy said was paying for his time to put the free software on the card that was a sandisk brand. He said he does not own the software. So if this card does fail and or I want to use the free software on another nook I don't see a problem as I paid for the guys time already. Now if I'm wrong I'm sorry.
Thanks for your time,
Lori..

Thanks for your post. I wish it was easy I failed so I bought one. Maybe the card brand bad? I think I will try a sandisk card and maybe I will get it figured out.
Thanks,
Lori..

Ok, I admit I over-reacted in my original post. I've always felt the selling of the N2A card was a bit of a ripoff of all the hard work put into CM7 by the developers, especially since there was never mention of any proceeds going back to support the developers. $34.99 for an 8GB card, $49.99 for a 16GB card and $79.99 for a 32GB card ...... really? Then to see someone buy one card and then simply want to clone it to use in another NC (her daughter's if I recall correctly) just did not seem right. But, I defer to the moderators......

Hi Again,
I agree with you totally on the money being sent to the people that developed the software. I don't have a issue with that part. ( I still don't know why they give it away for free?) If the CM7 people sold the card I would have bought from them. This is not my fault that the N2A ripped those people off. I just felt I didn't want to send N2a anymore money for something I already bought and if software is Free didn't think that was wrong. I was not going to do this to make money like them. I just need a backup for use in another one or maybe in case this one messes up somehow. I tried making my own at first but with blue dots and other items I got so confused what to do and didn't want to mess my new refurb CN up. Maybe after my chemo treatment effects subside I will feel better and can try again with a sandisk card this time. I would also like the moderators to just please delete all these posts.
Thanks
Lori

I think any number of people have tried with the instructions here and failed to make a usable card. Why? I don't know. Maybe it's because of the plethora of conflicting instructions. Maybe it's the links to outdated software, or dead links. Maybe it's just the "simply do this, then this, then download this that may not work with your OS, so you might have to do this, then be sure to hold the buttons down just this length of time," and so on, but I tried twice and gave up.
So, I bought an N2A card, inserted it, and my NC booted up immediately and it all worked. That's certainly worth something. I now have the fairly nifty Android tablet running Jelly Bean that I had hoped to have almost a year ago, and despaired of every successfully setting up. I don't think the payment to N2A was out of line, considering the time I had spent trying to do the same thing.
I'm not sure I'd pay them for a second card, if the first one died and I had a backup.
