Wanted to give EVO 4G owners/potential owners a heads up regarding a pretty serious issue with the included SD cards - have a look: Is HTC EVO 4G About To Be Launched With A Massive Defect In The Included 8GB MicroSD Card?
Oh great. I should've waited for things like this to develop before preordering. Hope it's nothing major.
To be fair, it wouldn't be a true HTC phone without some sort of major defect.
haven't had any problems
It could be a destructive application.

Several people seem to have it on the Android forums for the Evo: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g...disappearing-defect-included-8gb-microsd.html
Really hope this doesn't become a major problem.
I don't consider a SD card problem a "massive defect". If it was the slot or the phone then yes. I'm sure HTC will replace the cards no problem. I already have my own card so? Why you people seem to be freaking out of this its nothing. BIG DEAL.

Well it may not be the cards that is the problem. It could be a hardware issue where due to the awkward positioning of the card the phone doesn't read it sometimes, which would be a significant problem that would near impossible to fix.
I haven't experienced any problems.
I use my own 16GB card and dont have any problems. Maybe the shipped card is bad - but it is not a device deffect.
I had that exact same problem with a 4gb card from microcenter in my hero until one day, it completely died. After I replaced the card, the problem went away. It's probably just the card.

I remember the 5/19 engadget review mentioned:
"The microSD card lives underneath the battery, so we'd probably recommend just getting a nice big one (good luck finding a 32GB!) and leaving it put -- especially since HTC has chosen one of the most unusual slot designs we've ever seen on a phone. Basically, the card rests loosely in a trench and is secured using a plastic peg overhead; press it down to hold the card in place. A fingernail is enough to pop the peg up again, and the card just falls right out. It's such a bizarre design that we can only assume it was necessitated (versus, say, a conventional spring-loaded slot) by virtue of the EVO's tightly-packed circuitry. Nothing a good, old-fashioned teardown won't definitively answer, we're sure."
So is this a hardware or officially resolved software or combo issue or will we not really know until after the June 4th launch (asks an eager beaver)?

First of all, we still don't know what the issue is exactly - hardware, software, or a combination of the two.
And if the problem is widespread, new EVO users, who may not be tech savvy or have spare SD cards, will not be happy and this is the publicity HTC doesn't need.
And finally, if it is a bad batch, I'd like to know how HTC plans to address it and what we would need to do to get the fix.
I have seen this issue with my evo. I will test out 4gb card and see if the issue goes away.
No issues for me.

Swapped that sucker out with a 16GB since the day i got it. No issues
I have an EVO from the I/0. I re-formatted the card before I put anything on it and haven't had any problems with it.
No issues with my nexus one 4 gb card. I will try formatting the 8 gb and try again.

Geez...It's a freaking storage card. You gotta love the hysteria that results when a story is headlined with the words "Massive Defect".
A massive defect would be "half the screen goes dead when used in temps of 70 F or higher" or "phone bricks when you install a memory manager".

Again, if you bothered to read the article or prior posts before commenting, you'd know that nobody knows the root of the problem. It is not necessarily a faulty storage card. It could also be a problem with the hardware where the memory card does not stay connected to the phone, which would be a major issue, and replacing the memory card would not solve it. I know I'd be very upset if every time I wanted to take a picture the phone told me there was no available memory card to save it to. It also could be a software problem, which hopefully should not be too difficult to solve.
According to a poster on the Android forums,
"I contacted sprint about this problem tonight, they told me they knew about it already. Sprint said the only phones that have this problem are the ones that google gave to their employees and to the reviewers. It was a software issue, apparently the issue was only with the first 2,000 phones google gave out. With the phones being released on June 4th, the software issue is resolved. I am switching form the Crap pre to the HTC Evo 4G, and I am glad to now be a part of Android Forums. Thanks guys and have a good night."
http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g...sappearing-defect-included-8gb-microsd-2.html
So let's hope that is the case, but who knows how reliable either the guy is or the person he talked to at Sprint. We'll have to wait and see if it happens to us.

I guess the "Google Device Experience" is out the window.
My guess is Google and moto want to find a more elegant solution than mounting it inside the sdcard mount point.
I'm 100% certain someone could get the sdcard working now if we could get the kernel source with the driver.

I am saying that I was under the assumption that the missing microSD functionality was a Honeycomb issue to be updated by Google.

The going theory is that, because Motorola piggybacked the SD Card slot onto the SIM slot, they need to wait for proprietary drivers to be ready.
Considering the WiFi-only model also has the SIM slot, I'm guessing there's some truth to this.

The sdcard slot is just another piece of hardware that can be mounted as storage anywhere. The issue isn't mounting the storage, but where and how to integrate it so that applications can use it. Simply mounting the storage as a folder under the sdcard is frankly confusing to the average user who doesn't even have a file manager.

And this concerns me a bit re: Asus. If they've performed some hack to get the SD card slot to work (and notice the "if" there), then I'm not sure if they're the route I want to go. If this isn't how Google's planning on implementing SD card storage into Honeycomb going forward (again, "if"), then how will Asus realign with Honeycomb once official support is provided?
And, what else have they hacked to enable support of all their other stuff? How much should I trust Asus to know what they're doing here? How much experience does Asus have with Android to be doing things like this?
All questions that make me reconsider my thinking that I might return my Xoom in favor of the Asus...
Xoom has mapped the internal memory as an SDCard so theoretically the Xoom will need to have maping for 2 SDCards.
Could this have anything to do with the problem?

This.
I've never tried it but I am doubting that you can mount to different devices to the same point, and call them the same thing. Especially since one of them won't always be there - if it was a 'raid' it might be a little different, but I think that would be a weird way of doing things too.....
Too many moving targets.

I agree, Motorola is running a business. A business is competitive. If someone solves a problem before you, you lose customers. Sounds like ASUS has done that, and I appreciate the OP for letting us know that.
And as for the person above who recommended closing this thread, why would you do that? It provides new information, not just complaints.

Do not think this would be the problem since my Atrix phone has 16gb internal and my 8gb card in the sd card slot. Of course the Atrix calls them both the media area and when you move apps the phone only has the option to move apps to the media area. So of course they all go to the internal memory and not the card. I can manually move things like music and videos to the card but all the apps seem to want to fill up the internal mem first then I guess it will start adding them to the sd card once the internal fills up. They really need to give the app manager the option to move to either locations.
I think we need a new Topic section under Xoom labeled buyers remorse. These people need a place to complain elsewhere.

YOU knew the slot would NOT function. MOTO NEVER stated to the public when it would be. had they said "slot will be enabled march12th" or some such and it didnt, then heck yeah we all have a right to get on the soap box.
however, moto did not put out a release date. if you ever heard of one it was rumor.
yelling, complaining here and opening up multiple threads on the same subject falls on deaf ears at moto. call them up, go to their support forums. this is a technical forum on the gadget, not a place to vent.
you/we ALL knew the flash support, slot and LTE would not be turned on at launch. some of us early adopters went ahead and purchased anyway.. took a gamble that everything would be enabled in two weeks or so. your gamble didn't bear much fruit save the flash support.
you had 30 days (longer at costco) to demo/try the unit until you had to return. you continued to gamble. you lost now you want to complain endlessly about it?

Does this mean that the fact the XOOM currently advertised in the UK showing off all its specs (including microSD support) will actually have a working SD card when I get it next week?
Because if not, it sure as hell is Motorola's fault. Sure I know there are non-working SD slots cause I read XDA but non of the adverts for the UK XOOM mention anywhere that it won't work.
We'll see just how pissed we need to be with them next week when we finally get our hands on these.

I'm not sure that its good business policy on the part of Motorola to make customers GAMBLE when they purchase their products.
And a majority of us are STILL within our return window. So if what you say about our waiting too long and losing our gamble is true, then are you advocating a mass return by everyone who is still unhappy, otherwise we wil be guilty of having made in your words: "a poor business decision"?
Personally I love my XOOM and have no intention of returning it. Guess I won my gamble and made a good business decision!
ASUS just released their Transformer kernel source. It could surely clue the Xoom kernel developers in as to what ASUS has done to make this work for that device. If there are proprietary drivers involved to get it working on the Xoom due to hardware differences, then that's another story.

I have a feeling that Moto intends to implement it differently on the XOOM, which is why theyre waiting on it. I think they want to take advantage of the SD as real storage instead of just external. I may be mistaken though.
Well.. after yelling at tech support people for I don't know how long, they made sure my latest replacement had the new firmware update.
The Bad News First.... it is no better. It crashes, but now it seems that sometimes it catches itself first and throws itself out onto the home screen. What happens then is, that you can't enter an app (including things like the market and people). I just loads and kicks right back onto the home screen before booting. To get this to stop you have to reboot. So instead of crashing now, it essentially forces you to reboot the phone to use it. Fantastic stuff Dell.
The Even Worse.... None of the other 4 phones I had ever had any error pertaining "directly" to the memory card (though I still think the memory card is causing all of this). The phone now 2 has given me the non-compatable card error, and the first time was at the very first initial boot up of the phone. Bravo Dell.
So Im sick of worrying about the warranty. By the time this gets fixed the phone is going to be so out of date, most of the apps won't play on it anyhow. What they are doing is criminal, but there is nothing that is getting done unless a bunch of you jump on the class action table with me.
But anyhow.. to my real question. I am done with this mess and am going to swap a new card in. The phone came with NoDo, but when it booted it updated with the security patch. What is going to happen when I swap cards after an update? And if so what can or should I do? Any help is appreciated... thanks in advance.
Replacing the sd card requires a hard reset and you will be back at the OS version you were before you did the reset. The procedure to replace the card is here:

My brother's phone has a layer of dust particles under the screen, probably covering like 75% of the screen real estate. He doesn't want to go through the hassle with calling Dell and getting a replacement sent out so we're probably going to go to the Microsoft Store where we purchased the phones and see if they will do a swap. I've heard they're very helpful in that regard.
They really need to do some quality control on this - the dust issue is pretty terrible and I would have thought it would have been fixed by now. We've had the phones since November/December and I thought the dust issue was a one off flaw.
Once I get a unit with no dust, Im pulling the card. The error THE STOCK CARD keeps giving me is that there is an issue with the memory card. It then tells me to "either remove the storage card or replace it with a new compliant one". And the sticker may said void under it, but no where on it right now does it say void.
So if they have a problem, I took a picture with the camera and the phone SPECIFICALLY states to "REMOVE THE CARD". There problem now... I don't care what they say anymore. They had their chance to fix it... the product is telling me to do it.... and I don't see "Void" anywhere. Took pictures and covered my tracks. Time to get this going myself.
Hi,
I'm really hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.
I've had my Desire HD for about eight months now, and counting the one I lost about 10 minutes ago, I've gone through a total of ten memory cards.
Each time I get a message saying it's been unexpectedly removed, or that it is blank or damaged. I've tried Sandisk and Samsung cards, all Class 2 / 8GB.
I hardly ever remove the memory card, but when I do I am always careful to unmount it. The same as when I connect it to my PC via USB.
After the 8th memory card died, the Gingerbread update had just been released, and I was hoping it was due to a software issue. However, as expected, my 9th memory card died shortly after. I contacted HTC who sent me ONE replacement SD card, to which I explained that I wanted my phone repaired. Courier picked it up, they said that it was being caused by a software issue and simply done a reset.
I knew it wouldn't work, and low and behold my 10th memory card has just died.
I am now contemplating going to Phones4U and asking for a replacement, as someone else has mentioned in the forum. However, there was one thing I wanted to check with people first.....
I connect my phone to my car stereo via Bluetooth, which I use as a handsfree and to listen to music that is stored on my phone. Now, normally I just turn my car stereo off. How likely is it that this could be causing the card failure? I don't see how, as the memory card isn't physically being removed, but I wanted to get people's thoughts on this before I start pushing Phones4U for a replacement!
I don't think your cards are physically damaged. They just need to be formatted.

I don't think it's my cards that are physically damaged, but it must be a hardware issue with the phone. Each of the memory cards either say it's been removed, or that it's blank or damaged. Some of them I can put into my PC and repair. Some of them worked again after I had formatted them, however 5 out of the 10 would not even be picked up by my PC.
I have now emailed Phones4U, so I shall see where I get (if anywhere) with them.
What HTC firmware are you using? There was an issue with 1.72 that caused symptoms such as yours. That is one of the issues that got the OTA pulled.
I have the phone number for Phones4U's written complaints team, the team that you always get told don't accept incoming calls. Should you need it, just let me know.

Hi there s32bauer,
I think i may have seen the same problem, although i have only tried 2 /sdcards and they BOTH work on the PC or lappy afterwards.
See this thread for more on my issue,
Hope you have a little more luck than myself.
I have had some great help off some great people on here at XDA though......Thanks guys...
P.S. Have you been running any custom ROM's? If so, what were they?
i had the same problem when on 1.72, i went through 3 16sdhc cards. i fixed this by rooting and using leedroids gingerbread.
all three cards which were broke i managed to fix and they are now in good use in my wifes wildfire and our galaxy tabs, the 32gb card i now have in my phone has been in there for about 4 months now with no more unexpected removals.
The only other time i had this problem was with my motorola milestone, it also ate cards - but the phone was next to useless as it was sig locked and never updated (got a full refund as flash never arrived in the 9 months i owned the pos).
Gone through 10 memory cards that's absolutely insane!! Even more insane that a OTA can be released that causes it.
I think your owed some replacements if the cards are screwed.

I've been through quite a lot. The first two died on 1.32 I believe. Then I lost SIX on the 1.72 firmware. Another one once I'd upgraded to Android 2.3, and then the final one the other once I'd received it back from HTC.
The number for Phones4U would be brilliant, thanks!

Just been looking at the SanDisk warranty on faulty non working micro SD cards - you should be able to get replacements as long as you have proof of purchase.
Maybe spread them out over a few weeks each if you have a few

Ive gone through 2 (ebay) 32gb sd cards in 2 months, both didnt last a reboot, and were fubar afterwards, can anyone else who is running a 32gb card confirm it works ok? Or have I just been unlucky with 2 bunk suppliers?
Sounds more like you got crap cards off eBay, my 32gb card works great

Any pointers on which type of card yours is? I think it needs to be a sdhc card but dont know what class number it should be. I seem to see that they have different classes.
Or which seller you purchased from??
Is anyone else having trouble with their apps disappearing or getting an 'Out of memory' message when you download an app? This never happened on my OG atrix.
No problems here.

No sir, I've not had that problem
Too much porn ehhh??
Is it possible you had the apps stored on your SD Card and the Card data got corrupted or you formatted or removed the card? I have had apps disappear like that before.
Hi,
I wrote a post earlier regarding a similar isue with my Atrix.
My internal memory is randomly deleted and I loose my files.
I've formatted and apply the factory reset without success because the issue remain.
I have found any solution on the forums at this point of time.

Someone else reported this recently along with random reboots. Might want to look into getting a replacement due to faulty hardware.

If that's your only issue your lucky! I am using the ATRIX 2 and before that I hat the ATRIX 1 all have had issues. I'm on my 5th ATRIX and going in a few days for my 6th . On this one my apps disappeared when I would reboot and could sometimes get them back after a few reboots but sometimes I had to reinstall. I found that if I keep all my apps on internal storage and game data, pics, music and videos on my SD card I my apps don't disappear. When they look gone there still there just not showing up in your apps drawer most likely due.. to an SD read problem I also have gotten the not enough memory even tho there is plenty of free space along with not being able to unmount my SD and muffled sounds coming and going from my speaker. Get the astro file manager and do a backup of your apps and next time they disappear try to install the backup and I bet it will ask to replace the currently installed app . Happened to me a few times. I even got apps installed but the market says there not! The ATRIX is glitchy and flawed and noone in today's economy can afford the dock and extras you need too get the whole experience of it. I'm tired of resetting and exchanges and if ATRIX 7 isn't flawless I'm going to the iPhone I swear! I also have noticed that even tho the ATRIX 2. Is supposed to get better signal I get half the signal if not less then I got withe ATRIX 1. I like the phone don't get me wrong but all these issues really bother me when my ATRIX is a week old and my wife who has had her iPhone 3gs for 3 years, dropped a million times thrown by our daughter and dropped in the dogs water dish is still working with no problems. Wtf...

A couple of things I would try considering you have had issues since like day 1 with yer atrix's. Have you ever used a different Micro SD Card to replicate these issues, because from the sounds of it you have a trashed Micro SD Card. I was having this issue more or less than I formatted my Micro SD Card and that so far has fixed my issue because somehow my Micro SD Card had got corrupted while in the phone. It is very easy to get corrupted SD Card when switching phones and all the data read and writes that go on.
Disappearing apps is a known issue wth Moto phones.
A google search will reveal this issue with moto phones. Not sure what they are doing to fix it, but keeping your apps in the phones memory seems to be a work around in the short term.
I did format my SD card and maybe there is some corrupt data affecting my apps but that doesn't explain poor signal, muffled sounds coming out if the speaker GPS issues! For example when I first set up the phone it said I was in Paris and I live in NY! And that just the ATRIX 2. All my other ATRIX 1s had issues of there own not pertaining to the SD card. Random reboots. Double boots with a flashing blue then purple light, complete crash on one unresponsive touch screen on another and lagging unacceptable for a dual core phone. I'm no noob to Android and I've been loyal to Motorola from my first cell phone. My CLIQ was great! Never had an issue. This phone has something wrong with it for sure. Mabe its hardware or software that will be fixed withe 4.0 but I payed for a new phone 2months ago and that's what I will get even if I have to switch to iPhone. For the record tho I hate iPhone and really hope that my next ATRIX is better. After research the ATRIX 2 is the best phone out, sgs2 may be a tad faster but not by much and the price is right so there ya go lol

Sounds to me like your store is selling you a bad batch. I have no issues at all. Except the apps disappear occasionally but that's not the phone issue it's a google software issue as this problem can be duplicated on several phones.
The gps issue is unheard of on motorola devices as they use the best hardware for gps (that's a fact) and you can google that.
Just because a phone is dual core does not mean it won't lag. It's all about how the software is implemented to work on that hardware.
Edit- I took that rest off cause I didn't want you to think I was trying to flame. Not my intentions.

ive gotten the low memory before. not sure whats up..
Hopefully my next ATRIX will be OK lol. Has anyone noticed that the camera on the 2 isn't as good as the original ATRIX? Its faster but the auto focus isn't that great especially when taking photos in the dark. Maybe its just that nothing is better then the original, if its a movie or a phone lol I'm thinking maybe I should just go back to my ATRIX 1 but it could just be glitchy and a new one will fix my issues ...I hope
I've had theeee missing apps before, but once I reinstalled them on the phone memory and not on the SD card, it hasn't happened again.
I also think your issues are specific to that particular phone, my Atrix 2 seems to be rock solid with only the camera giving me some grief - not as good as it seemed on the showroom floor.
Have anyone experienced the Wifi dropping out (actually being turned off)? Started noticing this about a week ago...

Yea I just noticed the Wi-Fi issue with the "New" one I got sent from Motorola. So I might wind up going back to Best Buy and swapping this one out as the 1st one I had didn't have this issue, had other issues.

the atrix 2 is just a magical device aint it?
Kind of hard to tell if these issues are from a handful of units or are very widespread. Most of the Atrix 2 forums are overrun by cicadas. The release of this phone was so low-key and unexpected. Issues should be narrowing by now after two weeks but the community feedback is too small to be meaningful. It's still not available on Amazon and the eBay sellers are scant few. Has anyone received any updates for the phone? I really don't know the update schedule for Moto or ATT phones. Maybe they are just gonna ignore the Atrix 2 since its so under the radar, or maybe since its so under the radar very few people will buy it and thus Moto will not feel like supporting it or won't get reliable issues forwarded to them to fix and thus I'm a sad panda.

And to add to that, the way they promoted the Atrix 1 will probably kill the Atrix 2 also. 99% of commercials "paired" the phone with the lapdock just to sell those overpriced, cpu-less storage-less ram-less things, and not highlighting true capabilities of the phone. 8 out of 10 people want an ipad-like device (didn't say tablet, you know what I mean), they probably already have a notebook at home.

My apps stopped falling off my phone around the same time I started using a different launcher. This was around the same time I stopped caring where my apps were stored too so you can be the judge on the culprit

Hey guys, I'm wondering whether any of you are curious about the nexus 7 as I am. I want to buy one of these but don't know how google are selling such a high end device for a low price of $200. Does anyone feel there will be any hidden facts about it? It seems too good to be true.

You have to buy the other three cores separately for $150 extra.
More seriously, you seem like a patient guy, so wait three weeks and the user reviews will pop up all over the place.
Right now, the most worrisome observation seems to be the lack of sd card, and this.
they cut the cost down by taking out the rear camera, sd slot, and MHL/HDMI out.
sd slot can be fixed with root and an OTG cable, but if your fine with losing the other two, then yes it's worth it for the price.
i preorderd a 16GB one and even though i'm really upset at the lack of MHL/HDMI, i'm just gonna have to deal with it.

Those who have used Nexus devices in the past, they probably knew there will be no SD card (Besides if you go with the 16gb model, you should have plenty!). I am yet to read any post which warrants a need for expandable memory.

I suspect a lemon (GOOG will replace the device). AnandTech of all reviewers would have caught this if really happening

Knowing it doesn't make the sting any better. In either case, that is something to watch out for.

It varies depending on usage, of course, but here's mine.
Yes, 16gb should be enough for me. And also I agree that the issue with screen flicker will be fixed if that certain model isn't a fluke. I am really excited to see this device if it's as good as claimed. I'll order mine now then. Hope everyone else enjoys theirs.

I think its pure FUD. Having a pure Google experience on a GOOG branded device is *huge* - really no use of nit picking on small "good to have" items none of which are a real deal breakers (I for one really don't think expandable memory is an issue at all, HDMI may be). Being early adopters of anything GOOG strives to achieve is the real deal - GOOG leads from the front the open handset alliance, having a device running an open source software while collaborating with so many device partners is huge - As Linus pointed out, we will be in an amazing state of the world 4-5 years down the line with Android and hopefully we would have cleaned up all the stubborn device partners.
It varies depending on usage, of course, but here's mine.

Been there, done that, I have so many unused micro SD lying around. Mostly use expandable storage as a backup solution, mirroring what I need from a neatly maintained catalogue on which ever device I need (unless you want to lug around your complete collection, 75% of which you will never listen - or for that matter will have ever the time to listen.

This is true, but the problem is: you don't know which is the 75% beforehand!
You sound like you have a very large collection, that requires multiple sd cards to even fit in. I don't need quite that much. But the fact remains that 16GB is still not enough for all the 1GB games, music, and videos.
Here is a review: http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/28/nexus-7-review/
Looks like its worth it. Just pre-ordered my 16GB

Omitting the sd slot was not a cost related decision, at least not directly.
