Yo, this is really great! Thank.
Just starting with Andy Rubin.
It's not working for me? All I see is the "Calling All Ice Cream Sandwich Lovers" video :S
It not work with Cosmic Panda.
that was sweet really looking forward to the release
Just watched the stream and here are my thoughts:
Ice Cream Sandwich looks like a crap. Personally it looks like a jumbled honeycomb and WP7 aka "Magazine Interface". Google had the chance to pick up the ball Apple dropped and make the design a little more inviting. From the the blue Tron glow of the dialer to the metro like interface of the people app (?) it's like 5 different themes jumbled into one.
Hardware wise, it gets a meh. I'm just excited to get the larger screen plus Super Amoled HD
Despite that, the features are amazing. I was particularly blown away by the instant voice, nfc sharing, and new photo features. Android has come along way.
Shame they didn't touch on ICS for tablets as this was the OS that ties phone and tablet together.
In another note, reading the Engadget comments, I'm particularity amused that most "comments" (apple fanboys) believe that this was the first time Android featured folders. HA! Take that Apple!
If you missed the live stream, here's an article giving you a quick run through of all the new features. I particularly like the new face unlock. Can your precious iphone and ipad do this?

This would be perfect on our tablets..phones not so much. I can't wait to try that instant voice dictation.
when can we have stock ICS packed so we can put iton our little tablets? :-D
33:00 face unlock fail..
So when we'll see it on our TF? too bad they showed ICS on a phone only and didn't demostrait how it looks on tablets, after all that was the big purpose of that new OS.
I agree, no tablet love at all? First it proves that samsungs tab or whatever is no where ready to run ICS. If it was they would have showed it?
What was fun about last night was I hooked up my TF to my tv and streamed it live. I thought that was cool...

[POLL] Would you buy a new tablet just to get Ice Cream Sandwich?

ICS is now official. I'd like to get first impressions from people here. Aside from the poll above, let's hear what you like (or don't like) about 4.0, and whether you like it enough to buy a new tablet for it.
For me, the biggest draw of ICS is that it'll be open-sourced, and ROM'ers will have a free hand to do some cool stuff. Second, with a unified UI, fragmentation should be less. Those who've tried Gameloft stuff know what I'm talking about. My takeaway here is that 4.0 should be better supported, and we'll see more ICS-specific stuff in the coming year.
Aside from these, 4.0's improvements were incremental, which was what I expected. None of the gee-whiz features grabbed me, but I'm a meat-n-taters guy. I'd like to hear more of the plumbing changes, which are understandably left out in a boo-yah representation as this.
Edit: Meat-n-taters info below

For video, MKV is now supported, but only for VP8 & Vorbis codecs. Presumably, no other MKV features (eg embedded subs) are included. Video performance should still be better, given OMAP4's better media capability and improving 3rd-party players. Am curious to see the (1.2GHz) 4430 playing 1080p high-profile w/ unrestricted bitrates.

I noticed that a majority of the UI elements in ics are geared towards the phone. I was hoping for more tablet orientated elements like a full featured chrome browser as well as tweaks to honeycomb.
I've had my xoom 7 months and I would sell it and upgrade to the xoom 2 most likely out in Nov sometime. I want a full hd screen and rumors of a 2048 x 1536 screen, and I'd buy it in a minute for $600 wifi only.
is there any reason you dont think the Xoom will get ICS as the google reference device? I would expect it shortly after the release of the Galaxy Nexus
Android 4.0 updates due 'weeks' after Galaxy Nexus launch http://goo.gl/80i7b Shared with APPY Geek (http://www.appy-geek.com)
if theyre giving it to any gb phone, im sure theyll support the tablets. after all, we did beta test most of its features
no plans to buy a new tablet until a quad core running ICS comes out. And it wont be a motorola product. Hopefully something like the Galaxy with hdmi, full usb, micro sd, etc.
im happy with the xoom but will get a new upgrade when software starts asking for a more power device. Right now all the 2011 phones and tablets are over powered so theres no need to upgrade. The apps are the ones that need that upgrade so they can evolve into something more funtional that can replace a laptop. we are seen such evolve in the adobe apps , autodesk. where you can have almost the full pc version on the go. Will i get an new tablet for ics? no, i will probably get the new desert later because xoom will have ics in the next months.
@double1 & bradgog
The suspicion all along was that HC was a public beta of ICS, and the Android design dude, Matias Duarte, confirmed it in the interview below,
http://thisismynext.com/2011/10/18/exclusive-matias-duarte-ice-cream-sandwich-galaxy-nexus/
“On Honeycomb we cheated, we cut the corner of all that smaller device support. That’s the sole reason we haven’t open sourced it.”
“Honeycomb was like: we need to get tablet support out there. We need to build not just the product, but even more than the product, the building blocks so that people stop doing silly things like taking a phone UI and stretching it out to a 10-inch tablet.”
Given that, it's not surprising that HC already has most of the features in ICS, and the remaining new features were for the phone side.
It's the other reason--aside from differentiation for marketing purposes--why I don't think Tegra 2 HC tabs will be immediately upgraded to ICS: there are no must-have improvements from HC to ICS. Some may be upgraded to ICS eventually (next year), but if you want it fast, it'll be custom ROMs.
BTW, missing from all the "heart & soul" New-Age gobbledygook in the interview was the productivity angle. It's the elephant in the room, and I'm surprised it's been given the AWOL treatment. Hopefully, it'll be the next improvement project for Android, as Win8 will certainly be waiting to pounce from that perch.
@brianmoriarty
>Android 4.0 updates due 'weeks' after Galaxy Nexus launch
Marketing-wise, it makes sense not to upgrade Tegra 2 tabs. One lesson eminently learned is that Android tabs can't be sold at iPad pricing ($450-500). Vendors need a wider price range, which has to have a low-end ($300-400) to go along with their high-end. Current Teg2 tabs are repositioned for this low-end (eg Xoom Family). Since hardware differences are nominal, differentiation needs to be the software, ie ICS. Sales of the high-end will tank if the low-end also get ICS.
@timrock
>Hopefully something like the Galaxy with hdmi, full usb, micro sd, etc.
Samsung has bought into the Apple's "closed" philosophy. None of its tabs have micro-SD, let alone full USB. Given the thin & light trend for tablets (and smartphones), I doubt full-size USB will make the cut from any of the major vendors. One exception would be hybrids like the Asus TF, with a separate docking station.
That said, ICS' open-sourcing should allow 2nd- and 3rd-tier vendors--who've been absent from the HC crowd--to join the tablet fray. These guys will be where you find full-sized ports, in exchange for heavier weight. Screen and build quality will be the primary concerns here.
There's already a tablet UI in ICS found in the SDK. It shouldn't be long before the xoom gets it or a port when the code is released.

Video: ICS running on a tablet (Tegra 3)

I know this isnt the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime thread, but this video gives a little taste of how ICS will look running on our Galaxy 10.1 Tabs. Even though the tablet in this video is running 4 cores, I think that when it comes to swiping and scrolling that our Samaung Tabs should see the same performance.
Video at the bottom of the article:

Drawer transitions and folders look very cool :-D
I think this one is also interesting:

A very early ROM on Xoom, already runs pretty smooth in my opinion!
thank you for sharing videos
I'm not a tech geek by any means but could anyone shed some light as to whether ICS might help our 10.1s play high profile 1080p mkvs on our tablets? I wonder what format that 1080p video is in the youtube video.
just got a question, is that red border that appears around the screen when going "back" or opening a window is that a DEV issue or a ICS thing that stays in there.
Transitions have never excited me. They're cool the first couple of times but then get annoying. I love that they're introducing folders, that should have been in HC from the beginning. All the performance stuff is more the by-product of the Teg 3 than ICS. And what's with the size of the border around the display on the Prime? It's huge.

Nope, the Tegra 2 just isn't powerful enough or has the right extensions to decode high profile 1080P. You need a Tegra 3 or a non-Tegra dual core for that.
is it the old kernel? i guess the ICS kernel is named starting with 3.xx.. this one in the first video has a name starting with 2.xx
ICS looks so nice. I needs it!

pretty sure it's gotta have a larger than normal bezel to match up with a decent size keyboard/track pad that it mates with... the first one was like that too.
I can't wait for ICS on my SGT 10.1!!!
This is correct. But ICS will use the graphics acceleration in the OS itself which should increase system performance. HC would use graphics in games and certain apps. I believe ICS will run very well on tegra2 devices.
Another video from an ICS Rom on an Asus EeePad Transformer.

This is precisely what aggravates me about Tegra 2 -- it pales in comparison to the Samsung Exynos processor. I think nVidia botched Tegra 2, even as much as I like my Galaxy 10.1" ... hopefully Ice Cream Sandwich resolves some of the performance problems on Honeycomb.

Kindle Fire ICS VS Eee Pad Transformer ICS

you guys watching how good kindle is holding up?

And just wait till we have an stable 3.0 kernel....
Ah my friend has a transformer and he is jealous... for 1/3 the price and a more manageable screen size and beautiful ICS, definitely worth it even with less hardware specs.

My friend has a 10.1 in Toshiba thrive. That thing is a hunk of crap. Its slow. Made out of cheap plastic. Horrible screen. Not compatible with alot of games, and I hate holding something that big. I love my kg more and more every day. Alot of it is due to development. My crappy LG optimus v is the same thing. A crap phone turned above mediocre because of great developers

I have a 10.1" Galaxy Tab running Task's v.14. Love it.
I've had a 7" Archos A70. Hated it.
Got a couple of HP Touchpads. The one I gave to my GF is running ICS 4.04 CherryKANG and it is pretty darn nice for a C-note.
But, I just bought a Kindle Fire for $139, yesterday. One of the techs in my office has one running CM9, and it's decent. Interested to see how it will work for the price.
...
i have a kindle fire, with 3.0 kernel is very light a fast
Isn't the OMAP processor in the Fire a little faster than the Tegra 2 anyways?
Just wanted to chime in here. I've had a Transformer and then moved on to a Transformer Prime when it dropped. I recently picked up a Fire for $130 and honestly I think it may become my main device. I don't watch movies on my tablet or even play games. I mainly read and web browse. For $400 less, the Fire does what I need and its the perfect size. I don't feel like I'm stepping down at all.

I maybe a bit off the topic. But to compare KF I think we should still use CM7 rom. At this moment CM7 is still the best of the best for KF. I am running CM7 Barebone and it is extremely light and fast. Antubu score above 5600, there is are always more than 200 MB ram availabe, all the games that I like run smoothly, it has ability to hide status bar and works full screen and much more.
For now ICS looks goog but it seems to consume lots of ram and some games (like plants and zombies) for some reasons still do not work properly. And we all know the remaining issues with kernel 3.0. So I am still tested some new ICS rom (Gederom is the best for me) but still use Barebone as my daily driver and very happy with it .
This is very accurate. I've had the Asus Transformer, Lenovo Ideapad K1, and the Nook Color. The Kindle smokes all three in performance. I sold all the above at one time or another in the search for a better tablet. With the Kindle Fire I found it.

The CPU is about equal but the Tegra has a GPU that is not affected by the poor quality of the graphic drivers. IMG is known for its bad graphics drivers. (The problem is particularly severe on the x86 platform, hence the Atom having a reputation of being slow.)

[Q] how is the flash player

does it lag in browser on 720p on full sites on the thrive "7" ?thx
Don't know about the 7" but the 10" works fine.
I using the 10" running root but not the newest update. I browse frequently using my Galaxy Nexus as a hotspot. Playing videos from Dolphin HD browser, using the on demand function, will play almost anything I click on. Netflix sometimes has a little lag issue but is corrected by pause and then playing again. I had a Transformer Prime but returned it because I was so used to the thrive and I needed the money. When I had the Prime I have to say that flash video played on the Thrive much better. I think this was because the Prime was running a new build of ICS. My phone now, after updating to new ICS roms, plays flash much better. But all and all I am very happy with the way flash is played on my Thrive. Just wish there was more development for the Thrive.
