I currently have the Asus prime and love the tablet, but it doesn't work for my needs as a multimedia device on the go. With the blue tooth and streaming video/audio issue, my main purpose of it is no longer functional. I could careless about the gps.
I was looking at the Acer 500 tablet. I know it would be a tegra2 compared to the tegera3 and there is the 510 model just released. After the mess that is happening with the prime I'm hesitant to try another brand spanking new model right out of the gates. I don't mind yesterdays technology if it's proven to work and tweaked already. Plus it should be a bit cheaper.
So my question is, how do you owners of the Acer brand of tablets like your devices? Particularly the media abilities of it. I use youtube, stream tv shows, stream cartoons, and internet radio. Being able to use my blue tooth headset is my sore spot and is what I'm looking to rectify with a different tablet.
I do some gaming but not much on the android platform has really taken me yet. If these Acer models play Order and Chaos then it would be a boon.

THere are video limitations with 1080p . mosy 720 will play fine. Streaming for me works well,of course some of the roms are better then others.I will not make comments on any of them. I would say read the forums of those roms.Order and Chaos does actually run very well on my A500. as with most other android games. I can also say my Bluetooth motorola hd 9 headset works flawless.

I have an a500, video and audio streamig works fine, same goes for bluetooth, I hate how the browser auto closes when it runs out of memory specially when watching heavy loaded web sites (I mean heavy Flash content).
I am on stock 3.2.1 rom, no root.
I love the big usb port as I can connect almost anything, I have a USB hub and can connect 4 things at the same time (memory, keyboard, mouse and gamepad).
Sound is good, not top best but is ok.
No good 1080p playback as Erica already said.
No GPS issues unless you go for custom roms.
Planned to update to ICS by the end of the month.
I like my A500 but I would never go from a Prime to an A500.
I don't have any issues with my device per say. I run netflix, crunchyroll, etc. on there and I use plex as well as tversity so 1080p videos and anything out of the scope of compatibility for my tablet from my library aren't an issue for me. Like you, I use it for multimedia purposes and I am satisfied.
My unwanted 2c is you just wait for a patch that makes you LOVE your Prime. It took several software revisions before Acer got it right with Honeycomb on the A500 and Tegra3 as well as ICS is brand spanking new so I'd give it a bit more time. I stuck with the A500 because I liked it and I found the USB port useful but as I said, I would not go from a Prime to an A500 for the mere fact that the Prime is technically speaking, a newer device with better/faster hardware and a better screen....even if you THINK you don't care about Tegra3 vs. Tegra2, once Asus gets the software refined, overall it will be better than the A500. If it's a case where you have some disposable dollars and are thinking of getting the A500 in the interim, go ahead; but if you're going to swap/exchange the Prime and then buy an A500 I would heartily advise against it.

As for me, here is what I can say about the A500 :
- for the videos, I'm used to ripping my DVDs and blu-rays so I can read them on the tablet. My favorite format is MP4. Nothing special to say about DVDs, but as for the Blu-rays 720p main profile works fine (high profile does not), just as 1080p low profile (both main and high profile won't be readable with a comforable frame rate). It's also a matter of bit rate : for 720p main profile, 3500 Kbps is almost perfect, 4000 Kbps is fine 90% of the time but it can get really laggy for some minutes at times. For 1080p low profile, 5500 Kbps was fine, haven't tested anything else yet because anyway good 1080p compressed movies weighs like 8GB and with FAT32 you're supposed to be limited to 4GB. No noticeable quality differences with the tablet screen anyway, and very little on a large TV screen given the compression, so to me 720p main profile remains the best choice.
- Sound is surprisingly good but mic really (and I mean really) sucks. Barely usable.
- Screen isn't as accurate as on other tablets. It makes no differences at all for a normal use but if you intend to handwrite it is still possible but not perfect.
- Battery life is fine for me, but it lasts less than others. Like 6 to 8 hours in video, the same for a standard use (internet, reading,...).
- The screen is good, but again not as good as the Asus's screens or iPads and Galaxy tabs ones.
- The USB port is a huge feature for me, it works just fine with my NTFS external hard disk, with all my USB keys, with all my USB PC controllers (that are already set the right way !), with my keyboard, my mouse, and my USB hub so I can use my keyboard and mouse at the same time on the tablet !
- With Honeycomb, internet browsing is a little bit too slow and lacks smoothness for me with the default browser (I'm used to great smoothness and speed with my SGS 2), so I chose to use Dolphin Mini, which is fine. Hope the ICS update will fix that though.
In conclusion it's a good device but for 2011, you're likely to be disappointed coming from a Transformer Prime. Better wait for the A510 or the A700 to my mind.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm going to hold on to the prime for another 2 weeks or so and see how the 510 is holding up. It's always the customers that find the little quirks which are not noticed by the manufactures in their testing phases.

i really love my tab
it supports all my needs
but on a500 you have to use external 3g modem (i dont use 3g on my tab)
if 3g is important i would rather a501
but the other things about it is really good
i use it for media too. i even dont use my pc since ive got it
and about the 1080p video playback
hardware codecs are kinda laggy but i use software decoders and its ok
Trying to simply select a show in the Netflix app with this tablet is a complete chore. The new UI combined with the crappy hardware makes it almost impossible. Everything seems to move at about 1 frame per second when scrolling through your instant queue or the list of categories. It takes way too long to find what I'm looking for. That said, the actual video playback is fine. But this problem seems to persist in other apps. I can't play Tiny Tower because using the elevator after buildling 20+ floors is a choppy mess and takes twice as long as it should if the game ran smoothly. There's similar problems in games like TowerDefense and news apps like Pulse, where the tablet struggles to load anything. The Play Store is laughable, because once you start downloading anything the entire thing locks up until it's finished and it seems to have no ability to multitask whatsoever.
Why does this tablet exist? The hardware is ****, the price point is equally ****ty (I have the 10.1 so it's $400), and Samsung doesn't seem to care that ICS is a choppy mess with the specs. I'm incredibly disappointed.

I was actually considering the Nexus 7, but am quite satisfied with the Galaxy Tab 2 7 now. With Cyanogenmod's announcement about CM10 and Jelly Bean I am pretty excited about the future of this tablet too.

Odd, I have a great experience with mine and it is just rooted stock. I traded in my asus tf300 for this and so far am quite happy with its snappy performance and colorful display.
Also, your language doesn't really help nor is it allowed. Having an angry rage post on a forum really isn't going to help anyone out so I would suggest calming down next time before posting on xda developers.
Recommend you do some research b4 you just start complaining about the device and software . I'm rooted and stock factory ROM and have no complaints. Get Titanium Backup and freeze or uninstall the apps you don't use (I froze them ) and the tab is now as fast and snapy as it should b . Also no problems with Netflix

My only experience is limited to my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It is completely stock.
Netflix works perfectly and I do not notice any lag when browsing for movies.
During playback ,the video looks nice, much better than my iPad 2 and HP
Touchpad(Classicnerd ICS rom), but that's probably because the other two are
10-inch tablets.
I plan to try CM9 once my micro sd card arrives in the mail, but I'm not optimistic.
But you guys really don't get any lag whatsoever in the Netflix app? I'm using stock unrooted and I can barely scroll through the different rows; it practically locks up. The 7.0 and 10.1 have the same specs, right? I wonder if anyone else with the 10.1 has this problem.
@Darunion: Why did you trade your TF300 for the Tab 2, out of curiosity? I've been considering the exact opposite. And I apologize if a couple of s-words offended you somehow; I know we're all adults here but if it's indeed against the rules I will refrain next time. I'm not "raging" at all, but I just thought those adjectives worked best when describing this very frustrating tablet. /firstworldproblems
I have the 7 and haven't had any lag with cm9 and almost non existent lag on stock. I have a friend with the 10 and he can search/play with nextflix just fine.
I nor my friend have ever seen the tab lock up when downloading from the play store either.
Sounds like you got a bad tab more then anything.

Found a video that shows what I'm talking about, albeit on the TF300, which suggests that this might not be a problem specifically for this tablet but rather the app's lack of tablet optimization. I'm finding it even laggier than shown here and sometimes I can't scroll at all (it also FC's regularly), but I may have been too quick to blame the Tab 2's hardware. This might just be an inherent disadvantage for Android tablets, and I'm experiencing similar sluggishness in similar apps.

I saw a review on the nexus 7. It wasnt laggy, but it wasnt as quick as the galaxy nexus with jellybean because of the companion core and the lack if iptimization in the os. With the galaxy tabs on jellybean itll be a lot quicker. That optimization may be fixed too, it could have just been the stupid companion core doing most of it.
I have yet to enjoy a good netflix UI on any device. Quality of hardware is a relative concept.

I use Netflix on tablets, phones, PC, and PS3.
PS3 is hooked up to a Panasonic 1080p projector
with a 133" Da-Lite screen. Netflix works best
on this setup... but it's probably because the PS3
has the best graphics capability?
However, I enjoy watching Netflix on my Samsung
Galaxy Nexus(phone) and my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0(tablet)
as well. They all work equally well, depending on
the quality of VZW 4G and/or wi-fi.

I've really had no problem what so ever. I can't stand even 100th of a second in lag. You might just have hardware issues. I heart netflix. I switched to cm because I'm a fan. Not because of issues. My 7 tab is books and video only. And runs like a champ

I do always enjoy watching netflix, its the browsing. Roku, smart tvs, blue ray players, video game consoles, mobile devices, etc. The browsing UI always sucks, honestly I think wii had the best browsing experience but the worst picture.

Ok possible fix for Netflix try clearing data and force stop . I just did that and it feels more responsive . Also now I can choose the seasons of the episodes I was watching

Happens to me 1 or 2 times a month. A fast reboot solves the problem every time.

I would recommend you wstch this nice National Geographic documentaries, the landscaping and many of the images are outstanding.They look pretty nice on our tabs.
update to 4.04 made Netflix much snappier.

Netflix working awesome on Galaxy Nexus, Nook Color, Galaxy Tab2 7, PS3, Roku, laptops and desktops. When the competition fails Netflix has always succeed for me. Are there hiccups? Sure and they are mostly associated with the UI but you can't be all things to all people and devices. Thing is NOBODY comes as close as Netflix.
I have been using Netflix on my 7-inch Tab 2 for over a month. It's really smooth and I do not notice any lag at all.
, hello, need some help, i have the ipad 2 and netflix and hbogo play well on it, no lag. i wanted a tablet with smaller screen, so got the nexus 7 which is a quad core. netflix and hbo go are lagging on it. my question is, is there a way, maybe with a custom rom, or any hack, to dedicate more resources on the tablet to playing netfix and hbogo for a no lag experience?

i've decided to buy a new tablet but then a friend offered his old TF101 as an option
the price for the TF101 is more then the other tablet i had in mind
the AINOL HERO 10.1
the main issue is simple, should i go with the TF101 or go for the cheaper AINOL option
Personally I bought 1 craplet from China and it didn't even power on when it got here (not the one in my sig). Shipping back was the price of the tablet, so I sold it on ebay for parts.
I still own 2 TF101s which never needed repairs.
does it have problem playing mkv files?
Once overclocked to 1.5GHz, using MX Player's (free) built-in hardware acceleration for video and software audio, I can play 720p MKV scene releases just fine. It doesn't handle 1080p and may have issues with higher bitrate non-scene 720p releases.
Stock and not overclocked it can't play MKV.
I never had issues with my tf101 stock playing 720p of most formats, on a 4.2.2 custom rom with no overclock it plays 1080p movies fine.
I too was in the same predicament wanted a new tablet was looking at the lastest retina display onda v972 ordered it and everything took too long for delivery. Went for a second hand TF101 rooted and whacked on EOS4 and haven't looked back since. Solid tablet very stable with good battery life. Only grumble is its a little on the heavy side after prolonged use
i like my tf101... not one complaint...youll not regret it...i do recommend any rom made by raymanfx im using his cm 10.1 and no crashes.. faster then any rom ive tryed
no sod's or crashes.. everything just simply works.. over clocked to 1.5 stable..keyboard works.. both sd cards...both usb ports.. even tested it different brand names external hard drive/pen drives...not one problem.. even though raymanfx no one does stuff for tf101 ill never need a upgrade its just too good..it does everything you could want.. and bench marks are extremely high.. i watch hd 1080p flawlessly.. and can goto to any website and press the play button.. apps not needed for things like youtube etc... just go there and press play.. this rom comes with her kernal he made for it...it owns...also i have flash 11 something and java so ya websites work.. everything but hulu.. the hulu thing is there website.. they want you to pay to press play on devices...only thing i havent been able to test yet is the hdmi i dont have a good tv but ill be testing it soon enough.. and even if hdmi dont work.. its no deal breaker for me.. if i was to upgrade id prob get the tf700 but very doubtful .. this tablet does everything
I have the MLB app for my Nexus 10 and the playback is horrendous. It is probably the most disappointing aspect so far as I am generally pretty happy with my N10. I checked the playback during Spring Training and it was pretty solid, now it is choppy, it skips, slows down, speeds up, extremely grainy.
Is anyone else having success with the App? I have a GS3 and it works perfectly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Negative. Same problems fast then slow video. Works great on pc and ps3 though

I'm having the same problem with MLB At Bat on my Nexus 10. The strange thing is that it works perfectly fine on my Galaxy Nexus, Roku 2 XD, and 2011 Samsung TV Smart Hub.
The playback speed is only a problem on the Nexus 10.

Yep, same here. I'm incredibly disappointed; not with the device but with the app. If I watch a game on my phone the video quality is fine, and if I watch video highlights of games through the app on my Nexus 10 they are fine as well. But live games are crap. I emailed the developer of the app and all I got was the standard reply (force stop, reboot, etc.). Obviously that did nothing. Subsequent emails have been ignored.
They posted a warning on your screen when you installed it that the Nexus 10 is not a tested and approved device for the 2013 MLB.TV App. The only currently approved tablets are:

So keep telling MLB.TV that you are using a Nexus 10 and maybe they will move it up the queue to be perfected. I only use mine when it is the only device I have available because of the stutters. On the bright side, the HDMI out is not blocked by the app (at this moment).
just bought the tablet today to realize how crappy mlbtv works on it.. might be a deal breaker
