The name game!
Ginger, Ginger, bo Binger, Bonana fanna fo Finger
Fee fy mo Minger ... Honeycomb?
Yes, kids, it's time for another round of the Android Name Game! Today's episode is brought to you by WP Wong, Head of Product Planning at Samsung. Mr Wong, as Alex reported earlier, let fly this morning with the first on-record mention of Android OS: Codename "Honeycomb" from anyone with a better title than "Blogger" ahead of his name.
Turns out that folks inside Google HQ are strongly leaning towards making "Honeycomb" the first Android release optimized for tablets, and making it the 3.0 release, thus relegating "Gingerbread" (which we all thought would be 3.0) to incremental release status along the lines of 2.3 or 2.5. Or so I was told by "a person familiar with the matter" (everyone's favorite source!)
Gingerbread would slot into a role as the OS of choice for lower-end smartphones, while Honeycomb would be come the version restricted to tablets and "superphone" level devices. Sound familiar? Yeah, to me to - feels like just a few weeks ago we were talking about "Eclair" (2.0/2.1) being the low-end OS, while superphones got them some Froyo (2.2). Things change right quick in the tech game, huh?
Frankly, this won't much matter to the majority of consumers if indeed it proves true: Most folks want a phone that works, and couldn't care less about what form of sweetness its software is named after. You? You may well care, for any number of reasons ranging from to a stupid bet you made in a nerdy bar to anger that your 2.1 device might not be eligible for some Honeycomb. Me? I care because just a week ago I went on national TV yapping about how 3.0 would be called "Gingerbread." Ah, well, I'm still not wrong. I'm just saying that someone who knows just told me that I'll probably be proven wrong in the end. But hey, it's the risk I take for living such a dangerous life!
Sorry, I thought I was James Bond - and not a blogger - for a minute there ... End of Quote

Nice find.
Although other sources theorize that the version for it is different. One theory is that the tablet update (Gingerbread) will be numbered 3.0 and that the next phone update would be an incremented version of that. This early in the game it's impossible to draw any real conclusions but in that case Gingerbread (possibly a tablet update) would be a major update going to 3.0 and Honeycomb (the phone update?) would build off that and become 3.1 or even 3.2.
We just got 2.3 release and bam 3.0 coming next year i love Android baby
Sure, Google might have just dropped Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the Nexus S just today, but that's old news -- Andy Rubin just took the stage at D: Dive Into Mobile and announced that Honeycomb is due "next year" with support for tablets. Andy demoed the new version of the OS on a Motorola prototype tablet, and it was very different, and highly customized -- although there were still grids of icons, the apps were more "desktop" in flavor, and the traditional Android buttons weren't present. We're waiting for more details, we'll let you know what's up.

Plus android tablet coming next year running it
Google's Andy Rubin brought more than just a Nexus S in his bag of goodies tonight. On stage at D: Dive Into Mobile, the man has brought with him a prototype Android tablet from Motorola. It's got video chat, an NVIDIA processor, a "dual core 3D processor," and... oh yeah, it runs Honeycomb, not Gingerbread. Little else is known -- Rubin immediately turned his attention to a new release of Google Maps -- but we wouldn't be surprised if we were looking at Stingray, a tablet rumored for a launch on Verizon shortly. Is it seven inches? Ten? We honestly don't know -- but our gut tells us on the bigger side of the spectrum, which would line up with rumblings that the Stingray would in fact be a full ten inches diagonally.

Hi guys,
Just been on the support site and there is a comment that 2.2 runs too slowly so their next update will regress back to 1.6!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure if this was posted earlier but it is entitled 2.2 update.
ye gads, 1.6... what is this, the middle ages
hopefully our little group here can crack 2.2 without them anyway

Do you have a link?
Something looks fishy about the huawei forums.
I can't post the link but here it is:
huaweidevice.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=289926&tstart=0&orderStr=null
That post on the forum isnt true, there is a huge issue with the forums that they apparently dont monitor.
the issue is thus:
anyone who registers gets listed as Huawei staff, and they didnt have an account with the username "admin". so someone just registered with "admin" and made that post, notice everyone below is listed as staff as well.
the fact that its been nearly a week since the initial post is very concerning as one would hope they monitor their own hosted community forums. they definately need atleast one person to watch that place.
edit: clickable link: http://www.huaweidevice.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=289926&tstart=0&orderStr=null
If you go back to the main "Tablet Product" forum page it shows zt0622 as being the admin. zt0622 also happens to be the same person that said "Because the OS in S7 is Android 2.1, it does support Adobe Flash. We'll release Android 2.2 round about March 2011.Thank you for your concern for out product." (since I'm a new user it won't let me post a link to that comment but I'm sure you've seen it).
So, I'm guessing the Android 1.6 comment isn't from a real employee
...I've got my fingers crossed in hopes that I'm not wrong...
Good news... looks like they just posted again:

At the VIP event they also confirmed that 2.4 will be available very soon after Google releases it!
After experiencing with X1 and X2 and then X10 and knowing SE's incomplete support of their products, I would like to assume that ARC will come with 2.3 and die on 2.3 and I hope I stay with this assumption without putting any pressure on myself that why my phone doesn't do this or that
This is what SE has been promising over and over for every generation of their phones and they fail to deliver, don't believe it then go back and read SE history. This is their repetitions in failure for every device they put together.
But this won't stop me from buying the ARC.
The new phones are different. Google brings the OS, Qualcomm does almost all drivers, and SE does Timescape, the launcher, and a few smaller apps. Most of the customizations are just some reskins, and Timescape has no real integration with the rest of Android, making it a lot easier to update without causing problems. Sony Ericsson said yesterday in Brussels that they plan to at least keep updating for 1 year after release.
The X10 was different. It was SE's first Android device, and Timescape and Mediascape were heavily integrated with critical parts of Android. They've learned from their mistakes with the X10, the new ones will do much better!
I wouldn't exactly agree with that.. SE promised that they would upgrade from 1.6 to 2.1 and they did.. and in doing that they realised that they had made it inordinately difficult for themselves to do so.. They say that they learned a valuable lesson from this.. and that the arc (and it's siblings) are built in a more modular fashion, allowing them to add their overlay UI etc without a massive coding exercise. I tend to believe that assertion.
Whether or not we'll get 2.5 (or what ever comes after 2.4).. I don't know.. but Android has matured significantly from 1.6 to 2.3 and future updates are less likely to be as significant (IMHO).. so perhaps not so big a deal anyway.. ??
We will be getting 2.4 (which still is Gingerbread but more optimized), after that 3.1 (Ice Cream) should follow, merging 2.4 and 3.0. As long as we get Ice Cream I'll be happy!
couple of points to the OP though.. That article was written in January.. and 3.0 is for tablets.. The next update for phones is 2.4 (Icecream)

2.4 will still be Gingerbread, and will mainly contain performance improvements for dualcores, but no major new features.

That article has no sources, and similar ones have been posted in january too. Sony Ericsson has already got 2.4 running on the Arc, people tried it, and it's not the Gingerbread-Honeycomb merge. 2.4 is still Gingerbread, and if the next release will not be Gingerbread2, we'll be seeing 3.1 next. There will be no more new codenames in the 2.x family.
Everyday.... day by day...... I get disappointed by XDA member ( not all of them )
can't believe that there are people think that Honeycomb will be released for mobile handsets while Google itself stated it's only Tablet's OS. Yes, many developers have ported the Honeycomb into their HTCs' or Samsungs', but have you really tried it? fonts are un-readable, resolution is not that good and you can't read anything from it. Basically it was ported for testing and to play with for a little while.
2.4 is still Gingerbread as many members before me stated and Sony Ericsson already planning to release it when it's available. Regarding the difference, its main idea was to make dual-core applications run on a single core processor, along with minor changes.
please don't believe everything you read, it's really getting annoying how many come here with rumours just to start a useless thread
Best Regards,
Just thought of sharing this, if you don't like it then do us a favour, don't even look into this. Since I saw this on a couple of sites, I thought of sharing it. Even engadget had mentioned such a thing in early Feb I guess.
Yes I know icecream is dubbed as 2.4 which will contain elements from both gb and honeycomb, scheduled to run on non dual core smartphones. I have also seen some arc's testing the 2.4 os
I didn't know that the post was outdated, never the less lets move on, one should not get annoyed with every single thing. There are millions of things out there in this world to do the same. Might sound rude but shouldn't unless you're soft.
Peace \/
Cheers

does anyone know how the progess on lollipop for xoom is ?
what are the problems they are facing?
as there are other devices with tegra 2 that already have lollipop roms out
like galaxy tab 10.1 and i guess asus transformer
i seems the team eos and shishu have hit certain roadblocks
just wondering what those are...
Android L
I'd just be happy with a working link to get my Xoom rooted properly

No idea! I'm using CM11 (20141130). Still working well, but I'd also like to see the future on my Xoom. I don't know about ASUS, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does have an OMNI 5.1.1 that was recently released. I think that this is comparable to Lollipop 5.1.1.
I might just try to download and dissect the codes for both operating systems, and try reverse engineering. If I have some time next week I'll see if I can figure things out.

I'm really surprised at you. Schischu is a very reliable friend and developer who has always come through for us. On another thread he has said that he has most of the code done, yet not managed to get the camera working yet. There's no reason why he should lie to us, so you can do one of two or three things.
1. Wait patiently (I did this, even going so far as to buy a new Xoom about two weeks ago). By the way,I just love it. Got it up to speed with CM11 a couple of days ago. CM11 is a very good, very stable Rom.
2. Start coding for the Xoom yourself. I think that you might not be able to get up to speed so very fast as you'd need to.
3. As long as you're rich, buy another tablet and don't worry about the rest of us.

Opinions are like noses, everyone has one , but not at all of them are very pretty or handsome . You know it dawns on me that since you can write code for the xoom , then perhaps you should write the lollipop code yourself and stop complaining . I'd love to see the fruit of your efforts. No one else has come rushing onto the stage with any pronouncements of a nearly feasible lollipop Rom for the Xoom. At least Schischu is saying that he's working on it. As I said, if you're so smart, then write the code yourself and release it to us as a finished product . It would be nice to have. Again, do something, or sit it out till the next act comes on stage.
In the meantime, I'm using cyanogen mod 11.0 (20141130) , which is an android 4.4.4 clone , very full featured, and capable in the extreme.
As it is , I know the Xoom is not the fastest tablet in the world, and I know there will come a day when I'll be trading up to something different. However, at the moment , I'm very happy with my Xoom, and using it to the greatest possible extent .
I'm not trying to be mean spirited, but only concerned that in your impatience you appear to be so irritating that you may chase off the one real ray of hope we've had on the next generation of Xoom development.
By the way, I'd genuinely love to see what you can do with the lollipop code.
Blessings

Sorry dude, this is not happening... I'm not telling i'm better than Schischu, just want to see more proofs than a Settings/About Screen that can be faked with some changes on Build.prop and Settings.apk resources... i know this as my Xoom is faked as an Xperia Tablet s (SGPT12) so i can download Mortal Kombat X and play on it...
And i think anyone can use the Rom he wants, i'm still on JB 4.1.2 compiled from AOSP and happy with what my Xoom is capable to do with it... so if you are running CM 11, congratulations to you, and why you don't try and start to play with AOSP code and see what you can achieve with it...

I'm not impatient, just asking more proof that Lollipop can actually happen on Xoom, the Real Lollipop as i saw some ROMs that mimics it and just that... by the way i'n not willing to try Lollipop as i'm happy with what i have right now... maybe i port 4.2.2 AOSP to it and nothing else...
