One of the most frustrating things about my hero is that the turnaround from out of pocket to being able to snap a photo is roughly 10 days.
With the epic's dedicated button, and faster everything, how quick can you go from pocket to photo? Do you have to unlock the phone first, or is there some sort of push twice (like menu) to unlock/to to camera?
For the most part if we're posing pictures we use our actual camera. Other than for quick "upload to facebook" kind of pictures I use my cam mostly to catch the dog/neice doing something cute. Dogs and 2 year olds don't hold still very long, and if I lose one more can't-miss picture while I'm waiting for my hero to wake up, return to home, accept my banging on the camera icon, load the app, and get ready, it's going for a ride through a window.
Well u will have to unlock the phone first, however if u just have a plain old touchwiz lockscreen or the other one and not the combo lock, you can get apps or a widget called "Lock Screen Switch Widget".. Then your lockscreen is disabled, or you can use widget locker on the aosp lock screen and make a shortcut slide on the lockscreen to the camera.
If u do turn off the lockscreen, just hold down the camera button when you turn your screen on and bam camera.
Hope this helped a little.
A little, I'm ok with unlocking the phone, that was more or less just a curiosity.
My main question was how long does it take to go from a phone in your pocket to having the picture on your card.
Assuming you turned it on
unlocked
pushed the camera button to get to the app *
pushed it again to snap the picture *
How long does that take? I know it's subjective, and none of you have held a stop watch, I guess I'm looking for responses along the lines of "there's almost no delay between the camera app being requested and a picture being taken" or "it goes from locked to loading the camera app quickly, but it takes a couple seconds to get to a picture ready state" and that type of thing.
*This is how I'm assuming it works, let me know if that's not the case, but no matter how you do it, my main question is the time.
It takes a fraction of the time than it did with both the Moment and the Hero.
That being said, it's still not fast enough to catch a pet or a child doing something cute unless they sit still or hold a pose for about 5 to 10 seconds.

5 seconds is usually the amount of time I'm silently screaming at my phone because it's not responding to the home button, and sometimes the screen isn't on yet, so I'll take 5-10
CM6 and custom kernels has made the phone much better than it ever should be, but I swear my phone has a detector in it that detects how badly it's needed at a given moment and works inversely proportional to the moment.
It's lag free when I'm just turning it on to check email and crap, but when I need a picture, or to know if I should take the exit coming up, I can't even get the screen on.
I put an icon shortcut to the camera on my home screen for quick access (I have 2 kids). From pocket to picture in under 5 seconds.
I just tested
It took about 5 seconds to take it out, unlock, press camera button to open app and shoot lol

Yeah, same here. Roughly 5 seconds from pocket to taking the photo. The biggest part of that time is pushing the power button and actually unlocking the phone. If it's already on and you have a shortcut on your homescreen, you're looking at 1-2 seconds, tops.
I feel your pain, though. I came to the Epic from a Hero and it was a huge relief just to be able to take a photo without having to clear an afternoon to do so. Plus, the quality of the shots are so much better on the Epic.
Not to bash the Hero, of course. It's still a great phone. My wife still has hers and loves it and my cousin is quite happy with my old one. CM6 makes it feel 100x faster than stock, as long as you didn't want to play 3D games. In fact, I'd still have it if they hadn't started releasing so many great games that I wanted to play, lol.
Thanks for testing fellas.
Why do both of you have the icon on the home screen though? Does the camera button not open the camera app if you're not in it? (only snap the pic once in?)
The camera button will open the app, but there is a delay of a second or two (to prevent accidental camera activation). I also have a shortcut on my screen to the video camera, accessing it "normally" requires starting the regular camera and switching modes.
I don't have a shortcut
The camera button opens the app immediately. It takes a second to vibrate and viola! Camera time! Lol
Also the camera button is 2 stage. Push it a lil to get the pic to focus in the middle and finish pushing it down to snap. Its a lot more convenient than my hero used to be hahah not to bash it cuz it was a great phone, but that processor hindered it so bad lol

With cm6 or some other lockcreen replacemnt aps. You can make a gesture built into the lockscfeen. So you can open the camera app dikectly without unlocking the phone even.
I just press power draw a big c and voila camerfa open in time t catch my 2 yr old son freestyle with his unce playing guitar... less than 4 seconds just tried it

I almost never use the camera mode on my Trion, but last night I wanted to take some shots at a party. When I tried to turn on the flash the icon was gone from the screen. I tried the function list it has flash on/off but when I hit "on" nothing happens. Like I said I almost never use the camera, but I know it use to work. The only thing I did recently was add Hermes Tweek from fit4cat. I have tried soft reset, but I realy don't want to hard reset just for a stupid flash. I'm not the most tech savey guy, so I live in fear of bricking my phone every time I rom update. I like the way its set up now, so if it has no flash so be it.... But the pictures I could have had of last night.....Well, photo ops like that don't happen every day!!!

You probably know this but in case not - as you don't use camera often, the flah icon will vanish if the camera has slipped off straight picture mode into the mode where it takes a series of pictures. i.e if you look top left corner you should see a logo of a camera not three symbols of pictures lying on top of one another. I find mine constantly slips off straightforward picture mode because the jog wheel gets moved without noticing. The jog wheel cycles through all the different camera and video modes.

Nope its in single shot normal camera mode, but thanks for the tip on the scroll weel I did not know that. I think one reason I don't use the camera more is I hate using the styles when I'm taking a picture, so if you have anymore hardware button tricks you want to share.

Don't need stylus for camera. Start camera with button on side of case.
Take pictures with the Dpad button ie one in centre between the two phone buttons.
Accept the piture by pressing it again and your ready for the next picture.
Exit camera by pressing OK hard key button.

You are ok how ur now mate.....the flash is useless if not u want to use it for torch....even pictures taken from 5-6 feet away dont get any diffrence with flash on and off at night....though 1-2 feet picture will give you a lot of change...all white washed brighten up dude!!!!! i did took atlist 200+ picture with my tytn but i cant remember a picture which were benifited from the using of flash....
anyone any comment??
Night photos
Yup, Sajib, you're right - day photos pretty good, night photos rubbish. Flash 80% useless except for certain angles when taking night photos in macro. I have nothing I would need to photograph in macro in the dark but there maybe many who have!?
Mike
Well I guess I will just have to find my keys with the light of the screen, as that seems to be the only thing it good for. Thanks for the tips. Who knows mabey the flash will come back when I get up the guts to flash the Cingular rom.
Yesterday at a concert i was nervous because i cannot film dark places with my phone but i tried anyway. I started the camera, used on/off to put phone in standby and soon after called it back to life to check time. i pressed the camera button to delete the video but the camera started overlaying today screen and i saw it was working perfect in total darknes where lights flashed here and there.
this is new to me but i was able to film almost a full hour without glithing.
can you ppl with different ROMs duplicate this?
so i was thinking.. there must be something that starts/stops when you put phone to standby while camera is working.. cant we just make the phone start/stop that everythime we press camera button (when we find out what it is)?
call me idiot or whatever if what im saying is wrong
i noticed the same behavior some months ago, probably with a different ROM. didn't have an answer for this
topic has 51 views and only your reply. looks like its "normal" i guess
but with latest pcarvalho rom my TC is perfect, only camera sucks

1.Open your camera..
2.Put your fingers in front of the len
3.push the power button to bring device to stand by,and after 4 seconds,
push again to wake the phone.
4.Now release your fingers from the len and you have a very quick camera.
If you can't do it with the first time ,follow the steps and do it again

its working great
is there any way to work always... after close camera and open again you must do it again....
there is no need of holding your finger infront of camera or whatever its only done by standby->wakeup. but you have to be in darker-than-full-daylight place and it only works while you point at dark. if you point to light the thing somehow resets and its all over again.
i posted this because i want to know if we can somehow force this behaviour to allways. i am sure this is just a minor flaw in code. any programmer here with any ideas about this?
i cant believe no one cares about this...
I am trying to get my focus to utilize the shop savvy app, but it doesn't take as good of close ups as my TP2, is there a setting or anything I need to change. Thanks in advanced.
When you fire up the camera, go into settings. Click "AF Mode", and choose "Macro". That should do the trick.
The other thing is to experiment with the flash off, or shoot at a slight angle to minimize glare.
Unfortunately, as you probably know, the camera settings always revert back to the defaults every time you exit the camera. That's one of the common complaints we're all hoping will be fixed by a software update.
Brad.
thanks I will try that, trying at work no luck as of yet. Have you tried the app shopsavvy yet?
Shop Savvy and BarCode pics
I'm using it, and it usually takes a couple of tries before I get a good picture that's recognizable. Have not tried the Macro setting, but I have noticed that the focus beep must sound before I snap for the picture or else I get gobblygook.
Microsoft Tag app is garbage.. I tired for an hour to scan in 10 diffrent tags. Changing camera settings for AF mode, lighting, etc. etc. Even they admit they need to make it use the video mode to line up the tag to scan. Until they fix it, it's a mediocre app at best
Hold the camera button half way down - picture will focus on bar code - then depress and you should have proper result.

This along with turning the flash off works like a charm. I have been going around the house snapping all my bar code labels. It works surprisingly well. Thanks
I have scanned a few barcodes and it worked for me. The main things is to turn off the Flash, and use the half press on the camera to focus properly. Then once it beeps snap the picture. I never switch to Macro mode and the half press takes perfect closeups.
I've recently purchased a Huwaei Nexus 6P. It's fantastic in every way including the camera... That is of course, when I can get the app to work. I use the camera to take pictures and occasionally video about 5% of the time. The app just hangs on the screen just before the viewfinder appears, and the only way to get the camera working again is to reboot the phone! It's incredibly frustrating, because everything about this phone is flawless! Anyone got any ideas?
you might have to take advantage of the warranty to get a replacement, if it persists, when i open the camera app on my Nexus 6P, i do not get that issue. however, i have only owned mine for less than 1 day. so we shall see....
BTW, i'm curious, does it still do that even if you double tap the power button when screen is off?
I've noticed that it only really does it when I come back from videoing something. It doesn't do it with the double tap the power button also, I don't think it's the handset, just the app I think
Mine acts a little wonky at times too. I tried to reproduce the issue you said you're having and can't get mine to do that, however mine does a few other weird things.
The camera on my phone takes a lot of double photos. I'll snap a pic and look through the photos quick and i'll see 2 of the same pic, but the google photos app only shows 1. If I delete that pic then both disappear from the camera app. I also get some pics that turn out as just a grey screen like the photo doesn't process completely. I've also had a few pics randomly disappear after closing the camera app. I'm really hoping it's just a buggy camera app.
I get the same issue as the op. But mine eventually says "cannot connect to camera" after 10 seconds or so.. Have factory reset a couple of times too..
Also my NFC of pictures from oneplus one doesn't work, 6p goes blank screen whenever I try to send...
Is there a way to take a picture while shooting video? If not, is there an app that you can recommend?
Unfortunately the camera situation is a bit beta-ish
I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem or possibly a solution for me. I have the h990ds and its stock with the latest update installed. when i launch the camera either from the icon on the home screen or by the shortcut by double pressing the volume down, it takes at least 2-3 seconds to open, sometimes more. i don't really experience this issue with any other apps (i say really because once in a while an app may take the same time to launch). Also, when actually snapping the photo, it often takes the same amount of time to actually capture, on auto and on manual mode. Finally, the viewfinder image is really, really choppy with a very low frame rate until i start shooting video, at which point it looks fine. i am hoping someone else can help out since i dont want to root or flash custom roms to get the performance i see others having on videos online
thanks much guys
Did you ever figure it out? Mine sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load. Once it was over 30.
Try uninstall or force stop "One Drive:. It works for me.
yeah the cameras slow. if the screens off, it's bc of androids ****ty doze feature. it's such trash.
