Help-HID drivers from Sprint/T-mo tabs? - Galaxy Tab General

Since verizon delibrately screwed us out of BT keyboard functionality, I wanted to know if we could take matters into our own hands. Could someone with a sprint/Tmobile tab take a look in the file system (might have to use ASTRO file manager to get to the root files) to look for HID drivers? I would imagine that it might be worth porting to us verizon tab owners. Currently there is NO solution for verizon unable to pair with bluetooth HID devices while Sprint and T-mobile seem to do fine.
I would be happy to provide any information from the verizon side. my guess is that verizon simply left out the HID drivers that would provide any bluetooth input from a keyboard. That would explain the keyboard to be found and paired smoothly with the tab over bluetooth, and yet the input would not work.
Please help us desperate verizon owners.
ps. I thought about selling it and buying a sprint tab but with verizon cutting the price of a new tab to 499$, it makes no sense to sell it on ebay for anything more than 499, and buy a 540 sprint tab.
Thanks all.

I can tell you as a Sprint Tab owner that Sprint did the same thing. You can pair with anything you want, but you can't connect. I believe that T-Mobile and At&T have been verified to work with different keyboards, but so far only the Freedom Pro BT keyboard has been shown to work with the CDMA devices. I am hoping that the Brando BT keyboard case will work, but no one has tried it yet.

i can confirm the freedom pro works. though i had to do some work. i had to go and download the spp drivers for android from freedom input to get it to work. i did get a hid keyboard to pair but no go on it working of course. i saw in another thread someone ordered the brando keyboard but hadn't gotten it yet. Here is the link to the keyboard. i just asked them if it works on HID or SPP profile. we will see what they come back with.

Do you have the Sprint or Verizon Tab?
The case/keyboard combo from Brando is what I really want. I have a feeling it is just HID.
There is another thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913456
They have a new kernel with Bluetooth HID enabled. I am waiting for confirmation it will work on a Verizon Tab and then will try that. It should restore HID for us.

I have the sprint tab.

What is the file name, I can pull it from my tmo tab.

Possible work around
I wish I could test this right now, but my Tab is back at Samsung being repaired. I have a generic mini Bluetooth keyboard that wasn't working with my Tab or my Captivate. I just got it to work with the Captivate.
I downloaded the drivers for the Freedom Bluetooth Pro keyboard from their site directly through the browser on my device. After installation I had to activate the driver through the "Locale and Text" option in settings. Once activated, paired the keyboard and changed the keyboard to Freedom Pro. Keyboard worked...
I don't know if this will work on the Tab, but i can't wait to get mine back and test it. If anyone gives it a try, let us know how it worked.

The freedom pro will work w/ spp only. I have the sprint tab and got the freedom pro to work the same way you did w/ downloaded the drivers and installed.

I purchased and received the BRANDO keyboard 2 days ago....I did an unboxing video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LXW9HHH4eQ
This video is just the unboxing & comparing it to the Samsung keyboard. I tried pairing it today...It paired in literally 2mins but....no action when testing it out on messenger.mIam going to see if there are some solutions floating around on the net....I love the weight & form factor of this CASE/Keyboard.

I flashed my Sprint Tab with ROTO's JME and Bluetooth HID works.
I then made a backup of all files with BT, Blue, Bluetooth, etc, in the file name. (lots)
Then reflashed back to Sprint firmware, copied all the files back and no Bluetooth HID

Bluetooth Keyboard for HTC touch pro?

Can anyone suggest a good bluetooth keyboard for the touch pro? Im planning to use it for typing down notes. has anybody here been using an external keyboard?
I've got an old foldup stowaway bluetooth keyboard (with a dell label)from thinkoutside - might me 'igo' now. I got working in about 10 seconds on my new touch pro. If you want something portable its great, and even has a little stand hat the tough pro can sit in, on its side or upright. The batteries last for months.
Freedom BT Universal Keyboard
I'm using for several years a BT Universal Keyboard of Freedom, link here
Working very well on my Unviversal, TyTN and TyTN II. Have had some problems with the drivers for WM 6.1. Another problem is getting additional unlock codes for use on your new PPC. I'm waiting now for about 2 weeks to get a new unlock code for my TP. The hardware is very good and the power consumption very little. Recommanded!
I have a Freedom Universal Keyboard that worked great with my Tilt. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to connect to my Fuze, and I've had many emails with tech support from Freedom and so far they haven't come up with an answer. It's not an unlock code issue, they were very prompt to email me a new unlock code when I switched to the Fuze. But for some reason, my Fuze won't recognize the keyboard.
I got spoiled having this keyboard with my Tilt, would take it to meetings, etc and type away rather than writing notes. I've got to figure out a new option for a keyboard.
I also have the Freedom Universal Keyboard, and it connected to my Fuze immediately with no issues (as opposed to my old Kaiser, which took multiple tries). Are you connecting with SPP or HID profiles? I connected with HID -- WM6 has HID drivers installed so you don't have to install any software.

I connect using HID. Do you mean that you don't run the BtHID software that Freedom Input keeps sending to me and having me install?
Seeking a portable keyboard for HTC Touch Pro and the formula to enable it
If any reader of this post would know where i might purchase a portable key board compatible with the HTC Touch Pro and what the formula, if such type keyboard exists, is, via which to enable such keyboard so that it can be used with an HTC Touch Pro, if whomever might have such information, would share such with me, i would be most grateful.

Exactly -- I use the software built into WM6. Not using the
driver means that the programmed keys don't work (i.e. the shortcuts for launching apps), but I'm OK with that.
If you want something small, get yourself a FrogPad - they are one handed keyboards. Might take a little time to learn, but it wouldn't be too difficult. I've got a Bluetooth model here from my office, so I might test it out in the near future.

How do you use the software built into WM6.1 to connect? I tried not using their software and just turning on the keyboard, but nothing happened? Could you walk me through what you do, if anything to get the keyboard to connect to the Fuze?
I didn't do anything special. I just turned the keyboard on in HID mode, pressed the pairing button (the round one with the letter B), and then put the Fuze into discovery mode (add new device in BT connection). The Fuze saw the keyboard, and asked for a passcode (I entered 0000). and promptly connected to the keyboard.

Help with bluetooth! hci_get_route returns ERNODEV

Hi!
I am developing an application which connects a Wiimote to a bluetooth enabled android phone/device.
I did this by interfacing with the native bluez bluetooth library directly, rather than via the Android API. The reason for this is that Android API doesn't support HID devices, which a Wiimote is.
A problem now is that on some devices, mostly those sold by HTC, my app simply doesn't work. After calling the hci_get_route(NULL), this function should return an id of the first bluetooth device available (most likely 0), but instead returns ERNODEV (-1) as if no bluetooth device is available.
I suspect it has something to do with our beloved HTC grossly modifying something in the libbluetooth library to make this fail to work.
Has anyone ever done this kind of bluetooth interfacing?
How could I make this work?
Rooting the phone and replacing a library or two would be fine too.
For a list of working and non-working devices, check out the 2nd post of this thread.
HTC support
I just sent a customer service message to HTC about this issue. I hope they can get back to me with a "we'll work on it" message, or something. I really want this on my incredible. I'm new to coding like this, but could you disguise the Wiimote as another kind of device?
Just a response from someone equally interested in a solution. I'm trying to set up a bluetooth keyboard (Freedom Pro) with my gsm Hero running the 1.5 based MCR 3.2. Available drivers (Freedom's own, BlueInput & KeyPro) should work with 1.5, but HTC devices, especially the Hero, seem to be lacking something that is present in most 1.5 builds.
Investigating, I find the same issue of no route to device, because there is no known device. AIUI when bluetooth is turned on hciattach is used to establish a link to the hardware. At that point an hciconfig should list the hci0 device as present but down. However I find this list remains empty at all times.
I found this for keyboards.
Since I can't post the link, it's called "KeyPro for Android"
Google "keypro android" and click the first link.
Maybe that could help. It says it works with any android device above 1.5, however, I did read that some keyboards use a different type of bluetooth profile, SPP rather than HID.
I haven't heard back form HTC yet either.
EDIT: Upon reading your post again, you have tried this. Sorry, my bad.
Thanks for looking though The Freedom Pro is switchable between spp & hid profiles, so I figured I was safe, lol. Not with HTC's butchered 1.5 bt it seems.
Did you ever try to use the most likely id 0 on an HTC device? Even though the call to get the id fails?
Maybe you could use also the Android API to synchronize if a device is present and then use the id that Android API gives you?
Just some thoughts since I would love to see that App running on my Desire with Snesoid
Edit: Double post

Believe it or not, I actually tried this. Unfortunately, the next command (to bind the bluetooth adapter) also fails, and of course every command after that one because the adapter is not bound.
Thanks for the idea anyway.
usb
does the wii remote have usb connectivity? could it be possible to have the communication pass through that connection rather than bluetooth? one advantage of this would be increased battery life and probably better compatibility across models.
i'm sure some people would prefer bluetooth, but i figure i'll always be using it very close to my phone so i can see the screen, so the wired option is actually a bit more attractive (considering battery performance).
i know ps3 has usb connectivity as well, you just might need an adapter (mini to micro).

I'm pretty sure the first answer is no - our wii is round at a friend's atm. However even if it was yes, you'd need more than an adapter. USB operates with one device as master & the other as slave. To allow you to connect slave devices to your phone it would need to be in host mode. Some mobile phone hardware implementations support this, however I don't know of any mainstream Android kernels which do. Even if you workaround that, you're left with the huge issue that slave devices can assume it's safe to draw power from the USB bus which could do nasty things (tm) to a lower power device like a mobile. This can be worked around via a powered hub, but it all gets very messy.
I looked into this a few months ago, hoping I'd be able to use a usb keyboard with my Hero. I ended up with a BT keyboard instead. Of course that doesn't work either but for completely different reasons, as hinted at by this thread. Hopefully a 2.1 ROM will solve that, but that's the subject of numerous other threads.
Uh, just throwing stuff out, what if you have a pc with two bluetooth adapters, it connects to the wii mote, and then broadcasts that in someway the android api can understand?
Also please actually try working on something with a rooted phone, the HTC EVO 4g is rootable, and I will make man love(no homo) if you get it working.
Either one works lol.
Using a PC as a proxy is kind of useless. If you have a wiimote connected to a PC, you might as well play games on the PC itself (there are nes/snes/sega/etc emulators for PCs too).
At this moment, rooting doesn't help with the problem either.
@1 True
@2 That sucks.
Do we think that this will/could be fixed in HTC's Froyo update for 2010 devices? Not looking for definite answers, just a ponderin'.
well if you send the null pairing code to the wiimote from the default bluetooth pairing screen.. it will fail to communicate with the wiimote too

Doesn't it work in stock/vanilla Eclair? I thought the main problem was with Cupcake, though HTC seem to have done weird things to every stock firmware. I read that removing Sense from a 2.1 HTC ROM breaks bluetooth. Go figure. And there was I thinking Sense was a gui enhancement

not in the US
The US version of the Tab does not allow connecting with a BT keyboard or mouse. Pairing works fine, it recognizes the keyboard & mouse as a keyboard and a mouse, but connection simply fails. Other Tab owners in the US have had the same problem. Ah, yes. Land of the free.
BTW, my firmware build number is DJ11, but on the pdadb.net site I see that the latest is DJ30. Under 'System updates' my Tab claims that it is up to date.
Any advice? Other than moving overseas? Maybe rooting & flashing new firmware?

DJ30 is for the Sprint version.
Flashing with European firmware will make this availalbe on your Tab.
I have t-mobile Galaxy Tab that I got from the day 1... and today, I was very disappointed with the fact that I can not get the Bt keyboard working with usa version.
Why all usa versions are crippled with no voice + now no BT keyboard...
Please... I do not want to return this cool tab, but I really want to use it with
the BT keyboard so that it can replace the netbook completely...( i got nice heavy performance labtop... already..)
I can bear with no voice.. but can some1 come with the solution for the BT keyboard pairing?

I have found that if you simply type those numbers on the BT keyboard and then press Enter, the Tab will seem to acknowledge that it is proceeding with the connection: the 'type xxxxx to pair' message disappears the instant you hit Enter. However, that's where it stops. It does not actually connect to the keyboard. It's one thing to share phone numbers with someone, it's another thing to get that person to answer your call.
I think Samsung wants to see how well their keyboard dock sells before enabling this feature (I *hope*) in a future release of Android for the Tab. Don't lose hope yet! If this were an el-cheapo Android tablet, then I'd say there's probably no hope for it. But Samsung has put a lot of resources into this tablet, so there will be a lot of development (and hacking) for it. And a lot of users who spent a lot of money are very pissed off, even returning the tablets back to the store. That's good, let Samsung know you're angry!
Meanwhile, I have just received in the mail a Bluetooth developer's book. I will see what I can determine about the internals of BT on the Tab: I know the full BT stack is there because I did use it to transfer files with my Mac. I was also able to write an Android app that paired my HTC Incredible (which also prohibits connecting with a KB & mouse) with my BT mouse, but I didn't go as far as to connect and read mouse movements. Pairing is easy, connecting is the question. I'll try the keyboard next.
On the VZW Tab, I have been able to pair a keyboard, but not get it to connect either.
I tried the latest version of BlueInput off of the Teksoft, but it does the same thing - pairs, bur won't connect. (There's an earlier demo version in the market). I also tried KeyPro from the market (also demo), but it doesn't seem to recognize the keyboard I'm trying to use (gearxs bluetooth mini keyboard - it appears to be sold under other names - it came with a CD with Android drivers, but it pairs, but won't connect).

I have the T-Mobile US version and I can now also confirm it working for both mouse and keyboard. I bought a logitech revolution 5500 combo at best buy and they both paired without a hitch. Simply awesome I must say. Tab recognized them independently by name. When asked for pin for pairing the keyboard I entered it on the keyboard itself and then was connected upon hitting enter.

Ok, great! That's encouraging. So it looks like Verizon may be the culprit and not Samsung. I'm now considering taking a trip to BestBuy to see if I can trade my Verizon Tab for a different one, I think a Sprint model was available. I'll test it with a BT keyboard & mouse before I bring it home.
[edit] Were it not for a $90 restocking fee and an assurance from Sprint customer support that the Sprint model of the Tab does not support the HID Bluetooth profile, I might have traded my Verizon model for a Sprint model. Contrary to what the Sprint customer support person said, in the store I was able to get the Sprint model to *attempt* to connect to my Bluetooth mouse (which I brought with me). There was a menu option on the Sprint model that let me view Bluetooth connection options, allowing me to use the mouse as a HID device. I believe that the problem was an incompatibility with the mouse itself. This menu option is utterly absent on my Verizon model. Next time I go back I'll try bringing my Apple keyboard (the BestBuy I went to didn't have a Bluetooth keyboard in the whole building).

I'm not sure about BT keyboards but the kb-dock sold by Carphone Warehouse UK seems to be the Samsung keyboard and it looks pretty cool and holds the tab upright at a slight angle for visibility. Been sold at nearly £40. I'm thinking of getting it because it will save battery and can also plug the charger and headphone while docked. I don't have any bt keyboard anyway and that feels just right.
Thanks everybody for your input on this forum.

Apple wireless BT keyboard

Hi all, its not that I am a supporter of Apple, but just a thought that come across my mind, that has anyone tried the BT wireless keyboard from apple on A500?
was having the thought that if can be used (keyboard) it kinda gives us more variety in how we can use our A500.
I have one at home, If I can remember I'll try when i get home. Should work no problem since it is bluetooth.
I have tried this and it did NOT work. Pairing was successful but no keystrokes were passed on to applications at all. I tried both the one I use on my Mac at home, as well as a new one from the store.
(I took that one back and got a Microsoft Arc instead, figuring I couldn't go wrong with USB, right? Sadly that doesn't work either, although other random USB keyboards I have around the house do.)

It pairs by entering keystrokes so the device (a500) is reading the keystrokes from the keyboard but you cannot select to use the apple BT keyboard as an input method...
Any ideas on how to tweak this?
no luck, Still trying to figure this out. You would figure that if xoom could do it then the a500 would.

can you send me the links from where did you get it...even when it arrives do share how it works on defy.
I am using my trusty old Nokia SU-8W folding BT keyboard. It needed a "helper" app in 2.1 but runs perfectly in 2.2 without. Seem to be a few on ebay, though if you're in 2.2 I imagine any good BT keyboard might work. Though I would confirm before buying. I am on stock USA t-mo phone, 2.2.1 Has no mouse. Has a slide-out to stand the phone in (similar to the video), but has to be "loaded" from within the phone. ("Initiate pairing from phone"). In texting the return key actually does a "return", not send. It sits up high enough in the built-in stand to use the lower nav keys.
Copy & paste are the only things I'm still trying to sort.
Is there any keyboard in the market that also have mouse (trackpad) support which can be used on defy's browser..!!??
I bough it from ebay, here is the link.
I will report back if it works.
There are small keyboards with trackpads from the same company, too. I dont know if they work but as BT Mouses should work with 2.2 flawlessly i think these devices should work too.
As long as the device works with Android in general it should of course work with the browser too.
