hi all.
I have this phone 3rd day now and here are issues I discovered while using it.
It is a great phone, but needs serious update from guys in HTC.
-Navigation feature is utterly useless.it is so damn slow.in compass mode it is showing wrong direction.also I miss footprints implementation with Google maps.I know, you can open certain footprint in GM but I meant full support.this is only my suggestion but all in all navigation app is horrible and I think once used,it slows the DHD down.
-Sometimes it lags like hell.at least for me.I have installed only apps I've used before on old Desire and there I had no problems with slowdowns or lag.I am using app from market called "SystemPanel".basically it shows all your phone activities an running processes.it can also monitor phone performance over time.this app is showing that every time I wake up DHD CPU usage rises to 100% and stays there until I switch screen back off.then it drops to almost nothing.unfortunately it doesn't show which processes are using this much resources.this app always pointed me to the right direction when I was tracking down defective apps.i have already emailed the developer about this.it could be compatibility issue with this app and new DHD.it also shows that right after reboot almost 75% of RAM is in use.really?this phone has a huge RAM and if this is correct reading, than HTC did a lot of bad coding while making this new Soft.after some time of use my DHD becomes sluggish and lags a lot.I got rid of Samsung Galaxy S because of it's lag issue.I never had any similar problems on old Desire and it has much smaller RAM and was running on 2.1!
-Sync function is a bitt dogy as well.it takes ages to sync all the accounts and it took few attempts to sync with my Google account.I've seen someone posting about this,so I know I am not the only one with this problem.this brings me to all new
-htcsense.com.nothing seems to work right.at least for me.and this was one of the most highlighted features when this phone was announced.
-Camera software is not what I expected.I doubt it is hardware problem.it is just poorly programmed.in low-light conditions quality simply sucks.and I just don't understand why camcorder cannot work on higher frame rate.
-flash support is not that good too.If you select option in browser to "always use" after a while of browsing od flash sites phone gets so slow reboot is needed.after such a long time Adobe still cannot make proper mobile version.that is a fail by me especially when these days mobile devices are in almost everyone pocket and are widely used for web browsing.
That's about it.sorry that you had to read such long post, but that's my DHD experience so far.
My point is that guys un HTC software kitchen should sit down and fix this IMO rushed release and give as an proper update.until then this is great hardware being hold hostage by poor software.it is unacceptable for phone with such specs to be performing like this.
Come on HTC.we know you can do better.
Please share your experience too...
I agree. I've gotvl the very same issue. I would really like to use stock android 2.2 like my old n1 waiting for a very necessary update

stock ROM is one solution.but i enjoyed HTC Sence on Desire.i hope they wil fix this one.
thx for confirming.at least i know i am not the only one with this problems.
I swapped out htc sense for launcherpro and also stopped all the syncing that htc sense requires like facebook for sense, twitter for sense, htc sense, stocks, news and weather.
I then set profiles within setcpu to allow for performance when the screen is on while scaling back the processor whilst the screen is off.
Installed spare parts and sped up some of the animations and bam! my desire hd is as fast as my nexus one was with CM6 with over-clocked kernel and all the lag has disappeared. I also have over 30 apps I have installed myself.
The problem with flash I'm sure will be fixed sometime, everyone is experiencing this slow down.

Does the lagging also occur when your're running stock? Do you use a task killer?
My phone has no programs with lag!
Oops sorry my post was a question to the OP

i don,t know what you mean by "running stock".
and no.i don't use any task killer.don't think it is needed in Froyo.
Ive found a lot of the slow down is from programs starting up and starting in the ram most I found from htc :/ I've used root and a auto memory manger (one that uses the system, not an app killer) and now my phone runs great next step is full root and a custom rom to fully cut out the bloat : D

Have you people who are suffering from performance problems installed the OTA update? It was supposed to fix some performance issues IIRC. My DHD is blazingly fast and i have around 100 apps installed. I run SystemPanel too and haven't seen any high cpu use.

Unfortunately I have to agree as well. Lags the whole time, ages to load the picture gallery with about 200 photos. But the worst thing, it is not supporting ActiveSync with Exchange 2010, for me incredible! I feel like on HD2 at the beginning, great hardware but bad software. On DHD I was sure that the software must be better but it is disappointing. I never had such lags on the HD2 even with the worst ROMs. I am also a bit diasappointed from the home screen. On HD2 with Co0kie home tab I had a lot of more information as I have now. The Market, for me the biggest improvement, is not really working since the begining, needs 20 retry to download a 1 MB app. I am sure HTC will fix most of the software problems but currently it is disappointing.

i will give this a go.
it is a shame that in the end i have to get rid of HTC software.i know some may not agree with me but i like HTC's software.i loved what they did since i had my old Touch Pro.Manila made that phone different from others that time and ever since i was buying HTC phones for their innovative approach.i cannot believe they screwed up so much this time.but i've seen them fixing their mistakes before so i still have hope.

yes.i applied OTA as a first thing after first boot.before i set up any account sync or installed any software.
EDIT: I got DHD after the OTA was released.

I meant "out of the box" I'm asking because you seem to point to the HTC software as the culprit for your lag problems, but it is not so clear to me why you come to this conclusion. I also use CPU monitoring aps, and my CPU load is mostly 0%. So how do you know it's not another app? Did you do a reboot? what happened after that.
I know it is not needed to run a Task killer, but it could be the reason for your lag, that's why I asked.
Maybe it needs gingerbread
Having said that, there is already report gingerbread will be out (on at least one handset) on 8th Nov. I m not convinced HTC will update DHD to Gingerbread for at least a few month given their track record with the past model. There will probably be only 1 update for the life time of DHD.
Is launcher pro a valid alternative to the sense? I mean will use more power and drain my battery faster? To use the memory manager should you get root? With Paul's visionary?
I am not giving up on sense just yet but I would like to know if there are alternatives...

well i noticed this after a few first hours of using DHD.that was before and after i added 3rd party software.the main reasons why i think that the cause of this lag is HTC software are...
-after a while of using Navigation app phone started to lag
-if i add navigation widget and then i navigate to that page on the home screen there is almost instant lag.
-it is not only Navigation app but some others too.like friend stream, htc peep etc.this apps worked fine on old Desire.i was using them on daily basis so i am sure.
-almost every other non HTC app i use runs smooth.
-when i sync my Gmail only,it is just fine.but if i use HTC sync all widget it is just painfully slow and it is slowing down the whole phone.
can you please recommend me an CPU monitor app you are using?so i can check my DHD with it.
Market is down.

i stated in my first post that this is an app i am using to monitor my phone.
problem is,it is showing me constant 100% CPU usage while phone is on but it doesn't show which app is responsible for this being such i high value.SystemPanel always worked without a problem for me and i always found defective apps with it.but in this case i have no idea how to track it down.SystemPanel simply doesn't see it or registering it.confused here a bit...

SystemPanel works fine for me and usually shows < 10% cpu. Maybe you have something installed that's not fully compatible with the new Sense that is causing the problem? It seems there is a genuine problem here with quite a few people reporting it. The difficult bit is working out what it is of course since it's not affecting everyone.

Try OSmonitor, in settings you can set it to show processes according to CPU load etc. I also use that app for looking at differnt logs eg. battery logs.
Perhaps you can also try SeePU for showing CPU and RAM usage in your notification bar! I like that I can see what's going on!
I'm trying to replicate yor problems using Navigation and Friendstream, but it doesn't slow down. You didn't install the youtube update by any chance?
should i use task killer or not. some say it slows down the mobile or eats more battery.. pls help
Just don't use it. There's an app called watchdog which works better, according to me.
Are this apps necessary to free memory or its just a gimmick

No, Android will manage all of your memory for you. You do NOT need a task killer.
AWBob is right.
Task killer is not needed and actually can give the opposite effect from what you want it to do.....
Android is capable to manage memory (in addition, DHD has a lot of memory )

Maybe this article helps you
By default, every application runs in its own Linux process. Android starts the process when any of the application’s code needs to be executed, and shuts down the process when it’s no longer needed and system resources are required by other applications.
A content provider is active only while it’s responding to a request from a ContentResolver. And a broadcast receiver is active only while it’s responding to a broadcast message. So there’s no need to explicitly shut down these components.
Activities, on the other hand, provide the user interface. They’re in a long-running conversation with the user and may remain active, even when idle, as long as the conversation continues. Similarly, services may also remain running for a long time. So Android has methods to shut down activities and services in an orderly way:
An activity can be shut down by calling its finish() method. One activity can shut down another activity (one it started with startActivityForResult()) by calling finishActivity().
A service can be stopped by calling its stopSelf() method, or by calling Context.stopService().
Components might also be shut down by the system when they are no longer being used or when Android must reclaim memory for more active components.
If the user leaves a task for a long time, the system clears the task of all activities except the root activity. When the user returns to the task again, it’s as the user left it, except that only the initial activity is present. The idea is that, after a time, users will likely have abandoned what they were doing before and are returning to the task to begin something new

You don't need free RAM, this isn't windows it doesn't perform better with free RAM, if you kill tasks to free RAM, android will probably re-open them again. Task killers will break your system, young children will laugh and point at you for using them, and support for any problems will consist of remove your task killer then come back and talk. Don't do it kids you know it makes sense

HI,
As I don't want that children laughing at me and throwing some little rocks on me let me ask THE silly (or not ?) question :
is autokiller* as bad as the other "taskiller" ?
I've read that this app was "not like the others" but hey... devs who want to stick their apps in my phone are a bit like mens trying to stick something else .. somewhere else :
"I'm really not like the others baby..."
so... where is the truth ?

autokiller doesn't actually kill anything.. it allows you to change the default values set in android's internal memory management. it's more like an interface for android's internal memory manager.
I've replaced ATK with auto killer and I think that it is a positive change. My device feels faster en it looks like it runs smoother.
I think this is a great thread which helps me beter understand the memory handling within Android. For now auto killer looks like a charm to me, and has more benefit than ATK.

I give android a chance to manage the memory itself.

I heard App Killers use memory, so I was wondering is there a way to get a shortcut, or a way to tweak to put what apps I want terminated and that I use on the go all at once or all in the same list? It's annoying to go into settings, then applications, then run and scroll through each one and force stop lol .
Don't force apps to stop. If it's not in use, it doesn't matter if it's in the memory.
Linux operates differently. In Windows you could use up a bunch of memory and it slows things down, but until you get to a critical level your Atrix isn't going to slow down. It's better to let it manage itself, otherwise it will simply start the task over and pull it to the foreground even though it was using no resources happily in the background.
Only close apps if they're erratic or if you want to clear memory for something hardcore like a PSX or N64 emulator, etc.
Trust me. I don't kill apps and used my phone like some sort of newb, but it actually works way better than when I try erratically killing apps all the time.
so even if its in the running tab say like browser and gmail, and say an app that uses gps and data and I close it but don't force stop it, it won't do a big deal on my battery? Sorry im new to all this, very new.

As soon as apps like Maps are out of focus (not immediately running on your screen) the GPS will stop searching. You will notice that Android is more than capable of handling it's own memory management. Just relax and let the OS do it's job. Some things you're killing with a task killer will just be immediately reopened by Android, as it's being referenced by another app. That will kill your battery much more so than just letting Android remove resources from a running app.

Yep, it's kind of a strange concept. I was so skeptical and yes, sometimes I look at the stuff in the background and still get suspicious. But the battery life and performance speaks for itself. After months and months of it pestering me, I finally submitted. I only kill tasks before running high end console emulators or a couple other apps that require a lot of juice.
It's definitely something that takes time getting used to. I've had an Android for almost exactly a year to this day and it's still a hard concept to grasp. As long as you're not running some crappy program that was poorly coded, it otherwise does a great job.
First Android OS was 1.6/Donut and that wasn't nearly as good as Froyo and Gingerbread. HUGE difference. I'm using an Xperia X10 because my Atrix is currently broken, but I've got CM running Gingerbread and WOW. It's like a completely different phone!! Even just the stock Froyo handles tasks much better. The Atrix is damn near flawless in comparison too.

I like Watchdog, http://goo.gl/c4On5. It will tell you if an app needs killing. You can even put a widget on your screen and watch how many apps are running, how many are idle, and what % of cpu is used.

I am reasonably new to the android community and so when I first got the device I looked up some of the most commonly downloaded applications to get an idea for what I should get. Advanced task killer was up there as one of the most popular so I went ahead and downloaded it.
I used it for about a month thinking "alright cool I don't have to search through the stock task manager to force close applications". However I came across several articles at that point stating that with newer smartphone's technology that a task killer was unnecessary and in fact detrimental. All of the articles stated that the phone ran better and smoother when allowed to manage it's applications on its own. While I hadn't really ran into many bugs (just a few glitches here and there) I still thought I might speed up the phone a little bit and decided to stop using it.
Here's the weird part, I start getting bugs AFTER I stop using the task killer! My menus ran slower, the keyboard was not as responsive, I even actually felt like the accuracy of my touches went down. I was patient with it though and gave it time but the problems persisted. After a week of staying off of it (in which I should point out I fully rebooted the phone several times) I decided to start again and boom.
Magically the problems went away, my menus are nice and smooth, keyboard response is perfect, and touches are right on point. I think these articles are getting a little too theoretical in their accusations against task managers. Personally I have mine only set on medium detection and safe auto kill. This basically means it autokills almost nothing and 1 touch kills all of the game/map apps that I told it not to ignore. With modest settings such as these I think that there is very little chance of it upsetting any sort of operative processes of the phone and I mean the bottom line here is the results!
I personally find that my phone runs much better with a task killer than without. So anyway just thought I would share my experience in case it may help anyone, I'd be interested in hearing others as well.
There is no need to use any Task Killer programs anymore, and using them is detrimental to the phone either way. This has been discussed time and time again on this forum and other phones' as well.

I realize I may have typed a little more than your attention span would allow you too pay attention to so let me shorten this for you.
I got the task killer.
I then read about it being detrimental so I stopped.
I got more bugs/worse functionality of the phone thought it was weird but stuck to it.
After getting fed up after a while I tried using the manager again and everything became quick and smooth again.
Clear now? I'm just posting that this is my personal experience, and I thought it may be interesting to some because it seems contrary to what most are reporting.
tl;dr
Factory reset. If you're being honest and not missing something you have a rogue app or setting causing a problem. Start fresh and you'll see that using a task manager and killing apps yourself is not the way to go.
The only thing I keep mine for is for killing rogue apps. And that's not a very common occurrence if you're doing things right and not downloading ****ty apps from stupid devs.

haha well at least you admitted to it in the beginning, hopefully you caught the boiled down version then.
It's interesting that you mention the rogue app issue. I don't have any of the problems I usually hear about in the forums when that is the case, although I do use words with friends, which i realize is buggy but it plays against friends and family that have iphones as well.
I doubt that is the culprit though, the problems and slowdowns I was experiencing are mainly things i have seen people mention as problems with the phone in general.

Once you break the phone in and all the apps load and cache it should be smooth as butter. A brand spanking new refresh isn't always the quickest. I find that after a few hours usage (after a complete wipe) that things start really moving along.
In my task killer I have damn near every program excluded as well. And a nice thing about Froyo is that system apps and important things usually aren't killed anyway. I set my task killer this way as a buffer because I really don't want to kill anything in the background that doesn't need to be killed. Doing that can make it relaunch in the foreground thereby slowing things down when the program wasn't using any resources to begin with.
A lot of it is a matter of perception too - a lot of people get OCD about managing tasks manually and start killing things, falsely perceiving that speeds are picking up and that they're improving battery life. Fact of the matter is that it's other factors which are leading to success. Killing tasks is inherently flawed because you're waking up apps which aren't doing jack **** to begin with.
Today I purchased the full version of SystemPanel. The reason was simple. I wanted information. The product was exactly what I needed. An app that gives real time and historical information on: battery charge and discharge; CPU utilization; phone usage, the list goes on. After two hours I noticed that it showed CPU cycles from apps that should be idle... Pandora and Amazon App Store... so I opened Pandora and saw it was stuck in a search. I exited Pandora and suddenly the CPU dropped and rate of battery drain slowed. What makes this a great app is the historical view and the ability to see historical CPU usage at the individual application level and compare to the overall phones CPU, usage and battery level. The end result is solid information on where and when the juice goes. The help describes why they will never implement an Auto-Kill feature, i.e. does not save any juice and if an app is not behaving... don't kill it, fix the problem or uninstall! Hope this helps!

I've got this app purchased as well. I usually uninstall it unless I suspect that a program is running wild like how you've described.

Seems that out of all of the apps out there, these guys dug in to do something of use. Now I can post screen shots of the Moto car dock charging problem that I have.
i don't think ATK is really detrimental...i've been using it and as long as you keep everything in check, it should run fine, just make sure the apps that are being killed are the ones you want killed.
I had ATK installed on my Atrix pretty much since day 1. Then i realised i was being an idiot to have it running in the background when i never really used it. Instead, i always just used the standard task manager, and added apps that i didn't see a point in having sit idle in the background to the auto-end list. Works quite well, and no annoying "Touch here to launch Advanced Task Killer" crap in the notification pane.
Unless there is a technical challenge it's best to kill tasks as sparingly as possible. End of discussion
I think you are missing the simple fact that killing tasks has no impact, positive or negative, on Android.

Same here, using the stock one, the auto end list too free ram. I noticed many apps that I don't use very often load on startup and run in the background.

Free ram has no impact on performance or battery on Android. Killing a task should always be adhoc and not automatic.

I have mine set to close only a few programs that eat battery in the background. Like the xda app.

Not entirely true, does impact the performance and is noticeable especially when I have less than 100 megs available. Even on my old winmo phone more free ram made a huge difference. Also has little impact on battery while apps running on background use cpu.

I realize you're a douche, so bite me.

Haha no need to get hostile man, you just clearly had not read my post.
At least have the decency to put tl dr beforehand if you are going to do that, because your first response literally almost quoted something I had already written
And I have to agree with slimslim about the ram, I find it very noticeable when the level of free ram gets down to around 100
So, this is a very fast phone. And it's got craploads of RAM. And I've never had it in use where over a GB of RAM was in use. Yet, when I'm close to that 1GB utilized state, the phone starts getting bogged down, and downright choppy in the launcher! How could this be????
This even happens in the widget selector screen, where my hacked GS2 with JB never, ever was choppy.
Could it be a rogue app? I just expect at this point in time (with the speed + Project Butter) to be done with choppy/laggy performance issues.
What exactly are you doing when it happens? I haven't noticed any issues like this yet. Just been using normal apps though.

I'm really just tooling around, using the device. Nothing special. I do have Tasker running in the background, but that's no CPU hog. I have Google+, Facebook, Twitter, etc. all installed and syncing, along with Gmail. But again it's not like they're all syncing constantly... just normal setup stuff.
I consistently am seeing jittery animation in the widget selection area of the launcher... no jerkiness at all on the homescreens or app drawer. Also, apps all run super fast and smooth.

No lag over here.

Try turning wifi on and off (or toggling data if using the cell network). I had a similar sounding issue and it seemed related to background network usage. Specifically with some of the Google apps and background syncing. In my case the phone would get warm as well, so I'm sure the CPU was busy as well. Cyanogen with gapps fixed the issue, but a simple data wipe might have worked as well.
Absolutely no issue here with over 60 apps installed.
Not even the slightest lag here...Still Fast and smotth after one month!
I vote tasker is the culprit.

I noticed a slight bit of choppiness when I was using Google music, sending text messages and surfing the web but it was only temporary and have not seen any such problems since that day. Trying a master wipe or another rom would probably be best.
Use better battery stats to see if an app is running in the background constantly. If not try doing a wipe and not installing any apps at first to see if the lag is still there.

None here... UCed to 1026 and still smooth as glass. Full sync many background processes while multitasking to the fullest!
