Can not Mount Phone to PC - Vibrant General

I have run into another issue. I can not mount my phone to computer. I think this is happening because of me rooting my phone. I was able to root the phone successfully. But somewhere along the way something happened and I can't mount my phone to my pc. This is as if my pc is not reading/recognizing the phone when plugged in. However, my phone is reading its memory and sd card perfectly.
When I plug the phone to my pc:
With USB Debugging off... I dont even get a notification in the slide down menu asking me to either mount/unmount.
With USB Debugging on... I do get the option in slidedown menu to mount my phone. At the same time the computer shows a pop up message asking me to install driver software for Samsung_Android. In the meantime , I press mount sd card which by the way is still not recognized by the computer.
I dont have the driver for samsung_android to install on the computer.
This thread here describes how I rooted my phone. I thought this background info might be helpful in solving the problem.
Does anyone know a potential fix for this situation.
Thanks.

When this happened to me having it" ask what to do" when connected may have solved the issue. I went through this just yesterday. You also might re-boot your phone and computer a few times...nothing like that can hurt. Until someone who actually knows something finds this thread : P

**bump... someone gotta know the solution

Reading your post is a little confusing. If you are saying you cannot "mount" the phone the term Mount is replaced with "connect usb storage" in the pull down. If yours is saying mount, then your rooting process may have not worked. It is hard to tell based on how you wrote this up. Use the one-click rooting you can find all you need INCLUDING the Samsung computer drivers (32 or 64bit) @ unlockr.com along with a nice youtube video showing the whole process beginning to end.
Additional thoughts:
If you are really jacked you can always go to the bible (in the top of this general forum) and search for the "ALL in One" zip to flash back to stock...etc. The All in One has the stock kernel, the .pit (used for mapping) the 32 bit driver/64 bit driver for the computer and Odin all in one Zip. You should have this in your computer folder named (unbrick tools) either way you should get all this if you are going to be customizing the phone, along with the Eugene's froyo that does not brick rom. This rom is a lifesaver should you flash in a way where the format will not recognize the stock format. You can flash this 1st then stock right after and that ALWAYS gets you back to stock.
In the future, when you are trying to describe what is going on try to be careful with terminology it is important not to use terms loosely otherwise we are just guessing on how to help......... hope this helps

Thanks for your thoughts. It seemed as if my computer was lacking the drivers for samsung vibrant so I installed them from here
and now I can connect my phone to the pc and its working fine. I thought I had downloaded and installed the drivers before when I downloaded on the big download button on the top and installed some fake software from advertisement.

If you ever flash a 2.2 rom and experience the problem again with the drivers already installed, this might fix it...

Phone is showing as CD Drive on PC

So today I had to visit the local VZW store to get my SD Card replaced because it was corrupted somehow, and now whenever I mount the sd card on my pc it shows up as a CD Drive and I am unable to access it. I've tried mounting it on another pc and it works perfectly fine though which leads me to believe its something to do with my pc. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the usb drivers 3 times now and getting no where fast, anyone have an idea on what I can do?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
BTW, running DJ05 w/ Geeknik 1.5.4 kernel with Super clean, but I dont think it has anything to do with it as even stock out of the box it wont detect it.

LOL!
Try using Windows System Restore to revert back to SEVERAL days before a known-good date. Otherwise you may need to reformat and move this to a Windows Support Forum. If you need professional assistance, i run a tech support company and could have someone walk you through the whole process via phone and internet for $50.

No access to SD card
I'm having a similar problem with mine as well. I installed DJ05 and ever since I haven't been able to access my card. I'm not an expert but I don't think it's windows. The reason I say that is because I have tried it on two different pc's, one with XP and the other with Win 7. I have no problem connecting my wife's Droid to either machine. The only way I have been able to access my card is by turning on usb debugging plug in the usb cable and reboot the phone. This works one time, so each time I want to access the card I have to repeat the steps. I know this may not be exactly what you are looking for but maybe it will help in your efforts to find a solution. If anyone can help I would appreciate it as well. Thanks
I am willing to bet the OP is running windows XP. This, among many other problems, was apparent when using mass storage devices. Common reasons were system not up to date, or the more common, infected system. Many systems I work with have some malware causing the problem you describe.
After 43 minutes on the phone with Verizon they also couldn't figure out what my problem is. I recieved a new phone today and is well. Thanks for the help.
boot into Clock work recovery (red voodoo one)
Mount SD card
then reboot the phone while plugged in and it should be fine

found new hardware

I already have my samsung usb and android modem drivers installed. but everytime i plug my phone in with usb debugging on, the "Found New Hardware" window keeps popping up, why?
im not sure, but it could be the problem to why it always says "waiting for device" on superoneclick
My day job is pc tech, I have seen this a few times but going to follow the steps, first give me some info
Which version of windows?
32 or 64 bit?
How proficient are you at driver maint. *add and removeal ov drivers*
When did this start?
windows xp - 32 bit - and im pretty proficient at maintenance. i think its always been like this.
Ok, Do you always use the same USB port? and have you tried a different cable? and have you tried it on other computers? if so did it do the same thing there?
First we got to get rid of the drivers on the pc.
http://download.cnet.com/DriverMax/3000-18513_4-10572602.html
This is a free program that has a few nice features but most important is that it can tell you the name of the files that are used as drivers. After you install and register (its free, they just want to know who you are.. name, email, that kind of stuff) there will be an entry on the right side called "Installed Drivers Report". Make sure you phone is connected before you click this as it scans active drivers. it will generate a report you can scroll through and find any samsung driver entrys. Write down those file names, we will need them in a moment.
Go to device manager and remove the device there. Windows XP was kinda lame about device removal it did not actually remove the device just broke the connection. Vista and 7 give you the option to actually delete the files which make this easier. Since your on XP after the devices have all been removed UNPLUG your phone from the PC then start a search for those files in the Windows directory. Delete (or move) those files and the rerun the driver install program from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
After that it may setup and find new hardware a few times. Mine did it 3 since there are multiple different methods it can connect with and each uses differnet hardware. Also each time you use a differnt USB port it sees it as new device in a new location so it also goes through new hardware setup again.
Report back and let me know if this helped any.
okay thanks for the quick response. i will try it when I have time and ill get back to you. first, imma try it on a different computer.
also, when its plugged in and i open device manager, theres 3 yellow exclamation marks, one on the android modem, device, and in the "OTHER devices" section, the USB controllers. if that means anything.
just turn off usb debugging... and it will stop. turn it back on if you need to use it for something.

[Q] SD Card not mountable during ROM Flash, update not possible

Hi guys,
I got me a Defy and wanted to flash CM7/CM9. I got a few problems:
1. What did I do until now?
I rooted with Super one click, es it didn't work with the pushing and exploting the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (after exploiting, if the Defy did it properly, it used to exit from shell and the phone remained offline, so no more action could be performed with adb).
Also, ClockworkMod Recovery is installed.
I used this and another push/chmod approach: Cyanogenmod Wiki /Motorola_Defy:_Full_Update_Guide
2. Problem A)
When putting the CM Update zips on the SD card and booting, it will say it can't mount the SD Card.
I mixed some things up and tried to make the SD card mountable again with this approach (last paragraph): Cyanogenmod.com /index.php?title=Motorola_Defy:_Full_Update_Guide&oldid=13776#Problems_with_Android_2.1
By typing too fast i added two incorret entries (shouldn't be a problem).
Somewhere than I read, installing CM7 is only possible with Android 2.2. My Phone says the following:
- System version: Blur_Version.2.51.1.MB525.Retail.en.DE
- Firmware version: 2.1-update1
- Kernel version 2.6.29
3. Problem B)
So I thougth, next approach should be updating to Froyo. Sadly, Motorola Software Update doesn't recognize my phone, wheter with drivers from first link above nor with the drivers that come with the Update center (frankly, I haven't tried first link driver only but Software Update only and both togheter).
Several wipes and factory resets didn't help.
Any thoughts how I could fix this and get me a CM7? Best would be without loosing garantee (I mean sticking with an official software version as downgrade possibility). Should I have updated without ClockworkMod installed? Could return the phone and get me a new one if necessary.
Thanks for your help.
Edit: Is it possible that Motorola Update doesn't work with Win7 64Bit at all?
1st of all you MUST have froyo kernel (but certainly not eclair) before you can install Cm7 properly!
2nd it seems that your SD Card could be corrupted. It's important to eject your device from Windows PC properly before unplugging it. Otherwise you can corrupt your sdcard and/or internal memory.
Here is how you fix both your SD Card and internal FAT32 memory.
1) Plug in the device to the PC.
2) In Android turn on USB
3) The removable drives will show up in Windows.
4) Do one drive at a time. Right click on the removable drive and select Properties.
5) In this screen click the tools tab. Under error checking click the check now button
6) On this screen click the box "Automatically fix errors" and click start.
7) When it finishes it will either tell you if fixed problem or not.
8) If it did fix problems then you will find on the removable drive a folder called FOUND.000, FOUND.001, etc. You can delete those as they are broken files that got corrupt and you probably can’t do anything with them anyway!
9) Now eject the drives properly and you done.
Hope that helps.
Aw, men! I used not to eject any devices from my computer
I will try repairing and the the Software Update Center again.
If not, anybody knows which SBF file from sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordan/list.php is the one I would get after updating? I really don't get this list at all.
Thanks.
Ok I checked the sd card and there were no problems. So I switched to "Portal and tools" to check the Defy itself. The the first time Motohelper popped up and said something like:
"Starting the software not possible. In order to start Motorola Phone Portal you have to shut down all Motorola PC software and your phone has to be in one of the following modes: PC Mode, PC Tools or Portal Tools [not readable].
Open USB connection on your device and select either PC Model, PC Tools or Portal Tools"
This message keeps poping up if USB Debugging keeps enabled. Once I disable it and select Portal and tools again no pop up happens but no software (at least visible) starts. Should there pop up something? Start Motorola Phone Portal at device plug in is enabled. Or is this a normal behaviour at all?
Thanks.
Check out device manager in your windows if you have any question marks after connecting your defy to it properly (usb debugging and phone portal on). Maybe you do need some extra drivers on this one.
Well, now i got tired of this and I flashed a SBF with Froyo. Now I`ll trie flashing CM again.
Thanks anyway!

Problem conecting to PC

Anyone else having problems getting their Windows 7 PC to pick up there SIII
When I connect my Phone I get the following message.

Hardware device missing
Windows cannot identify the device SAMSUNG USB

Or something like that.
Anyway, it picked it up once (yesterday) and nothing since then. Its really annoying as it won't connect to Kies.

There are two possible issue at play here, one your pc drivers are incorrect or two the phone has an issue (1 is much more likely).
1) Uninstall Kies, reboot the pc, reinstall kies and disconnect from the internet then plug your phone in.
see if that works, if not you may need to manually point to the correct drivers
2) Odin flash your existing rom back using the "update bootloader" issue, this will repair any slight niggles on the phone side.
Tried option 1 and still nothing, Kies keeps crashing and the phone will still not connect.
How do I manualy select the right driver???
I don't really want to try option 2. I only have the phone 2 weeks and I'm very happy with it as it is. I don't want to go modding it like my last phone.
I have this issue too.
You are not alone...Lot of users have this issue!
I cant really find what cause it, but you can read some threads here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828016
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844400
There are more you can find if google the problem...
I always for now unistall/install drivers again. But after 2-3 times of properly connections the issue is back.

Option 2 is not strictly speaking modding, all you will be doing is flashing the stock rom (the rom you already have on your phone) back over itself, you will not be rooting or customising everything, the rom will still be "official" and not "modified".
As for the drivers, I assume your using windows? if so:
Press Start
Right click on "computer"
Manage devices
find the item that has the "!" error sign and right click update driver
point it to the kies installation folder.
hope for the best.

Done the above and it tell's me that I'm using the most up to date drivers.
ok new idea (but will only be a temp fix)
When you plug the phone in it should have a notification saying connected to media device.
Click that, change from MTP to PTP and back again. and see if that helps.
Just found this worked for me.

Yeah that whole "Hardware ID missing" was an irritating situation. This is what I recommend as far as making it work.
1. Plug in.
2. When you get the error message, I think its because of a conflict with the ADB interface. Go to Settings, Developer Options, and check off USB Debugging.
3. Plug in once again and it should work. If not, try toggling between Camera and MTP.

All i want to do is see my phone in MyComputer then I can access the files no problem.
Back on Media device (mtp) and it looked like it installed drivers and then the folder Computer/GT-I9300 opened so happy days.

[Q] couldn't format sd card, accidentally deleted OS, can't mount to computer

Hi I broke my nexus 7 3g. I wanted to reinstall paranoid android and make everything fresh. Checking wipe data with goo manager didn't completely make everything stock so I figured maybe PA saved something to the "sd card", so I tried to wipe external data in twrp and I got unable to wipe /usb-otg, then I figured maybe if I wiped all the other options that might fix it and that just got rid of the OS completely.
I get unable to mount /usb-otg when trying to mount it to my desktop to copy a copy of the rom over because it seems my sd card did manage to get formatted. Unless I'm not choosing the right thing I don't know somebody help please before I throw this thing in the garbage.
I can't get it to show up in the nexus 7 toolkit but I have the donate version of that if by some chance that'll make the process easier. God damn please help me.
I've installed I think every program ever made for windows (gonna have to reformat windows again weeeeeeeee) trying to fix this and they all seem to want my nexus in adb mode but I don't think there's an adb mode when there's no OS installed. I'm willing to pay if that'll get me some help faster.
"mount /usb-otg" is for putting a usb storage device (flash memory key or USB Hard Drive) on a OTG cable attached to the N7 when booted into TWRP recovery.
It is NOT for making the N7 look like a USB mass storage device to an attached PC.
So put your ROM file on a USB key drive (VFAT formatted, not NTFS formatted), and flash it from TWRP "external storage". You don't need ADB to be working if you do that.
If you don't have a big enough flash key or a USB Hard Drive to do this with, then you have two remaining options:
1) Get adb working
2) Get fastboot working (and fastboot flash a stock ROM, and then proceed from there)
good luck

Holy crap I kinda thought the otg thing was because I flashed the kernel for using a charging otg cable. You know what I googled everything under the sun except the error itself. I was serious about the money if you want like $5 or $10 let me know if you got a donate link.
I'm pretty curious to know how to get adb working without an os installed. I'm pretty curious again about using fastboot because I have fastboot and it wouldn't show up on the nexus 7 toolkit etc etc etc. If you don't want to explain them that's fine because I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna mess up this bad ever again and I'm gonna buy a second usb flash drive now that I know I might finally have a reason to have even a single one haha.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you I guess I can throw out my tape and floppy drives now that it's 2013 and we're in the future.
The custom recoveries also run ADB... so you don't need an OS installed to use adb - just a custom recovery.
But there is a catch: ADB from the custom recoveries (either CWM or TWRP) show up on a different USB IDs than what the N7 (Android) OS uses
This little tiny detail effs up just about every newb Windoze user because they get an ADB driver installed for one or the other (either the OS flavor - using Google or Asus drivers, or the custom recovery flavor - using the "Universal Naked Driver")... and then they can't understand "why ADB doesn't work" in the other mode.
Sorry but I'm not going to rehash a tutorial on Windows drivers. I put up a gory long winded story somewhere, wait here it is. Feel free to ignore it. Woe to you if you are using Windows 8.
Rather than profuse "thank you"s, click on the Thanks button. At the end of the year I'm going to trade them in for some brownie points.
Well I clicked the thanks buttons but I just have to type it once more thanks there it is, I'll read that link soon too and I'll click the thanks button on that see ya in the future
