Anyone in the San Jose Bay Area who can program my epic? - Epic 4G General

Ok, I am such a noob when it comes to this phone. I did an upgrade to the DK28, but that is where I stand. I figured out that the issues I have and figured out that I need the newest ROM package, or a good ROM package, but after reading how to do it, I don't feel that comfortable doing it. So I will pay someone in my area to do it for me, so that I don't make my phone useless. If there is anyone in the San Jose area who could help me with this, I will pay you for your time.
Thanks
Mike

Hey man, I understand your fear of delving into this stuff as I was in your place not too long ago. Trust me when I say though that it is not as hard as you might think. Allow me to provide you a few links to where to start:
Oneclickrootandrecovery
This will get you root and install clockwork recovery mod going on your phone.
Now, you need to decide if you want to run a custom rom or just want to be able to add themes and such.
I'm going to assume you just want themes (because if you want a custom rom you'd just be getting my opinion and if you want that you can see my sig =D) so here is a link to the stock de-odexed DK28 rom this will allow you to apply themes and use the stock AOSP lock screen.
ACS DK28 ROM
I would suggest you try these things before putting your phone in someone elses hands. =) Good luck either way though man!

Hey Kenvan. No, not really themes, but a more workable phone. When I did the DK28 upgrade it took out my camera and everything associated with it. I was told these newer roms could fix this issue. A new theme would be cool, but it's not my main focus. I was able to root the phone, but not too sure I am comfortable doing the flash and rom type of stuff. Will I lose my info on the phone? I was able to back everything up with Ti backup, but hoping I don't lose everything. Thanks for responding. Plus I hear some rom's are better than others. I just feel more comfortable paying someone to do it, or teach me hands on so that it's done correctly.

No problem at all man, as I said I was literally in your shoes a few months ago and was deathly afraid of damaging my phone. If you are rooted and have CWM, then do this (I understand its an awkward way to hold your phone): Press the volume up, volume down, and camera buttons at the same time then (continuing to hold those ones) press the power button.
This should boot you into CWM. If you're worried about your data perform what is called a NANDROID backup. Using the volume rocker, scroll down to Backup and Restore and select it with the camera button. Again with the volume rocker, scroll down to Back up and select with camera button again. Don't remember off the top of my head if there will be a confirmation screen but if there is, select yes. Let it run its thing and then select Reboot system Now.
You now have a backup! You said you have Titanium backup and thats great. Make sure you update it before you do this next step.
If you want a stable ROM that works well, I suggest Nebula. The guy who makes it is a working professional who uses his ROM for his work phone and as such needs it to function. Follow the link in my signature to download the rom (it'll be a long download) and put it on your SD card.
I am also a huge fan of amosher's gingerbread theme, and I've attached an image of my screen so you can see what it looks like (ignore my dock, it is custom using launcherpro). If you like it download that from the link in my signature as well and again put it on your SD card.
Now do the boot into CWM thing I told you to do before. Select Install zip from sdcard and then choose zip from sdcard then find the Nebula rom zip on your SD card and select it. Now this time it WILL ask you to confirm and click yes. As a side note this will wipe your application data but as long as you have a titanium back up of it, you're golden.
Again, allow it to do its thing. Part way through the install your screen will go black and then some blue text that won't really be fit onto the screen will show up and chances are you'll panic. Don't, its fine. Give it a few seconds and you'll be good.
If you want to use Nebula alone or just want to see it before making a decision about using the gingerbread theme, use the Go Back and reboot system now. Otherwise, do the install from sdcard process again with the gingerbread theme on your sdcard. This time it will the screen will not go black so don't worry that it doesn't.
Now, when you boot this time its going to be a long boot. You're going to worry "Is it doing anything? Oh gosh, did I brick my phone? Oh no, oh no, oh no." Don't fear. It just takes some time to boot up after flashing a new rom. And there is a quick(ish) guide to flashing =)

Ok, bear with me. I have to go into work right now, but will pm you when I get back. Thanks so much for the help, and I will pick your brain when I get back.
Thanks again

You don't need to hold the volume up to get to cwm. It's just volume down, camera, and power.

If your your phone is already on and booted up, then you need to also hold the volume up to initiate the reboot process, otherwise if your phone is off, then you are correct.
Vol Up + Camera + Power = Reboot
Vol Up + Vol Down + Camera + Power = Reboot into Recovery
Vol Down + Camera + Power = Boot into Recovery (from phone off)

Did you figure this out?

Hey guys, ok back on the scene. Ok, I well look though Kenvan's link. I am still very hesitant about trying to do this. Also will these newer roms help with my camera issue? It also effects the bar code scanner, so I don't know if a rom will fix these issues. Also by reading some posts, what's the best rom's to go with? As someone stated, thanks for helping me out, much appreciated.
I will be here all day, so will do this today if I can.

As to your camera issue, I cannot offer any support because I have only ever had one camera issue and that was the known black and white preview bug in CM6. I can say that on Nebula Rom my camera has been working great and I've been able to use the barcode scanner a few times.
Again, I do understand your hesitance but let me assure you: Bricking your phone is REALLY HARD TO DO. And I mean REALLY hard to do unless you start trying experimental things like the ext4 file system hack. The thing to remember is that as long as your phone turns on (doesn't have to boot past the samsung screen or even less that that somestimes) you're not bricked and its easily fixable.
Finally, my suggestion for a ROM would be Nebula simply because I love its simplicity and stability. Its not the fastest but it is quick and it just works.

Ok cool, is there a step by step way or video to explain how to do this properly? Are all roms the same as far as installing them?

There are some videos but I don't know any of them instead I can recommend you go to irc.freenode.net type in a username and join #samsung-epic
I'm in there and not doing anything so I can help you out step by step.

I went on there and didn't see you but got some advice. I'm going to look it over after the OU game. Will be back on here tonight.

I apologize I left for a bit to get dinner.

New to this...any help appreciated

Alright...so here goes. I have been out of the smartphone market for some time now and am getting this awesome phone tomorrow. I am friggin excited! Feels like Christmas in the summer! Verizon tells me that it will already come with the 6.1 update installed. Anyone gotten one recently to verify this, and how do I tell when I get it...also how can I tell the radio that it has? I also already wanna mod this machine, and although I am selfproclaimed computer savvy, I am a little nervous about bricking the phone. I think I def want either an iCRAP setup to piss off everyone at work, or nfsfans 6.5....although I would like to have someone walk me through it. I have to say, everyone on this forum has done an excellent job with their machines and I am impressed. Also, I don't know that this will even be an issue, but it will still need to function as a phone and pda...as I have read in a few different places that some cant use their phone function anymore, etc. And I definitely wanna get the GPS running ASAP, due to travel on the job. Any help will be greatly appreciated, and I will def help out anyone on here if I can. I also am not sure about when and when not to let customizations run...any help with that would be awesome too
i am also getting this phone from vzw thursday, they told me it comes standard with wm6.0 idk or care. as soon as i get it im gonna flash a custom rom.
Hey there, I'm a fellow Verizon user. It was kind of nerve-wracking flashing the ROM for the first time, but its really NBD once you get into it (be sure and try android too!).
Do your reading first, there are tutorials all over the place. Something to remember about customizations - Don't let them run on any official Verizon updates you see floating around the internet, as they will cripple your GPS. Don't let them run on any ROM designed for another carrier. If you're flashing a generic or Verizon-specific CUSTOM ROM, let them run.
And you can check in settings to see your radio and OS version and all that (under "about" I think, correct me if I'm wrong)
Have fun!
so if i run mr1 from verizon to get to wm6.1, then I SHOULD NOT not run customizations. What buttons do I press to do a hard reset before that comes up? But, if I were to do NFSFAN's 6.5 rom, then I SHOULD let customizations run. Also, could someone point me to a set of CLEAR directions on doing the flashes? I have read a bunch of them, and it seems they are all missing little parts.....probably something so familiar to the editor, they just forget to include in the steps.
Yes, the lack of CLEAR instructions as a stickey is a real problem on a lot of boards. I've read threads over 300 posts in order to get solid info. I don't mind searching for info, but jeesh, guys it is unbearable. Granted some of this stuff is not for the faint of heart, but there can be so much info, and sometimes it is often confusing and contradictory. The SR. members and the Admins need to get their heads together and take a month to provide the community some solid resources, and weed out some of the erroneous info here. We want to make having this phone FUN and Practical. A Case in point is trying to get GPS working. Have you guys looked at all the info on here about this. Granted there is variety of carriers, but it shouldn't be brain surgery.
Also chevyspd, you want to do a SOFT reset before the customizations. Use your stylus to depress the small hole in the bottom of the phone before they run. Should be golden. A HARD reset will restart the flashing process from scratch.
10-4....so only do a soft reset by only pressing the button in the hole on the bottom before customizations runs. That is very contradictory from about 50 other posts I've read so far. A whole bunch of them say to do a HARD reset, but I will remember not to. But, when I do a custom rom like NFSFANS, I don't have to do a reset at all....correct?
You wouldn't believe how many times I got flamed for that same kinda comment on other forums.....interestingly though....Also...if I flash to NFSFANs 6.5, are the cubes still active, or is that something from HTC that gets written over with a new rom?
So, my new phone already has 6.1 right outta the box. Interestingly enough, it went to the customizations screen as soon as I powered the phone up, so I immediately hit the soft reset. How can I tell if what I did worked, and if it didn't, how can I fix it so I can use 3rd party gps programs?
Wow; a lot of questions. I'm not sure about NFSFAN's rom. To see if the gps works, make sure you have the Settings>phone>services>location is set to on. Then make sure the external gps setting is set to Comm4, then hardware NONE, baud 4800, and allow Windows to manage gps. Do a Google search for HTC QuickGPS if it's not already on your phone (varies from carrier to carrier) and Install it; Run it, outside and allow it 10 minutes to get a lock. If gps is working, then you should be golden. You will probably need to turn the radio on after every re-boot; and be aware that leaving the radio going WILL drain you battery faster than usual. All this assumes you are using the stock rom, and not one of the custom ones; each to those varies, some work out of the box so to speak, some of them require tweaking.
Funny i just got the phone yesterday to, but i actually already had it for about a year lol, just replaced the one i broke on saturday. But honestly the first thing i did with the phone is put in my SD card and boot up Android....
I really want my GPS back again but i dont really want to go through the hassle of unlocking, flashing, unlocking, and flashing, but if you deem it neccessary. and maybe i will to one day soon. lol heres the link

The cube is way back when man, sorry but those things are old school already. lol so when you flash to the 6.5 NFSFAN rom it will not have the cube, but it will have titanium and manilla 2d, which in my opinion are awesome replacements

Yes, and remember to install the Verizon cab in his post
Well, the phone didn't come with the cube anyways...lol...so anywho...I think the GPS is working anyways...just gotta find a free GPS like vznavi or something.

voice call volume control issue (volume control responds but volume remains same)

so here is the deal ,
the buttons for volume on the left side of the hand piece (volume up and down) works perfectly but the thing is when I'm on a call and i turn the volume up or down i see the digital volume control come up and shows that it turns up and down but hearing the speaker its still the same volume, BARE IN MIND volume control works for EVERYTHING ELSE EXCEPT VOICE CALLS if there is any terminal fix for this or any fix at all it would be greatly appreciated

Yes it's safe, why would he reccomened it if it wasn't. Flash it like any other rom update. Don't pull the battery and make sure it has a good charge and it will be fine. You can check the about phone box in settings to see what radio you have. If you don't know, you most likely have the old radio.

Ok since I upgraded to the 2.1 myphone has been having major problems almost to the point where I cant use it anymore. I have done a factory reset 3 times and still hasnt fixed the problems. I did do the upgrade over the air, what I need to know is, is there anyway I can downgrade back to the 1.5 or manually re upload the 2.1 version to see if it fixes my problems. Thank you.
what is exactly wrong with your phone that is making it unusable?
There is no current way to downgrade 2.1 to 1.5, even with OTA update, unless you would like to flash the root image, then downgrade back to regular 1.5... Also we may be able to better assist you if you explain the issues you are having with your phone a little better.
The issues I am having are text app force closes all the time, mostly when the phone itself is charging. I dont receive texts a lot, I have to *228 frequently through out the day. When I am at the homescreen the pages will slide all the way to the left and stay there the only way I can get back to anywhere is to either do a soft reset or long press the home key to go to another app. The biggest problem though is the texting and like i said it mostly just happens when the phone is charging. But the keyboard will seriously lag, force close...the cursor jumps to the begining of whatever i am saying or just randomly go to the left and mix all my words up.
have you installed any apps or do you use any widgets? are you using the sense home launcher?
i have not installed any apps since the 3rd time i did the factory reset, and i have no idea about the other question.
It sounds to me like there was some corruption with your OTA update. I would venture to say that you have two options here:
1. Take your Eris into Verizon and have them replace it.
or
2. Root your Eris and enjoy the many available roms here.
*Standard disclaimer: I am not responsible for what you do to your device, it is your choice to do whatever you please...*
why don't you just go into the verizon wieless store and tell them what is happening and they will give you a replacement. i had slight wifi issues so i went there and they gave me a new phone on the dot! they might make you do some factory resets and such there also
yeah thats what i think too..but since i did the over the air update to the 2.1 i didnt think I could do any roots or whatever. I am not that knowledgable when it comes to the roots or any of that. I would like to do that so I can fix my phone and actually use it. Can you please provide me with step by step instructions on how to do that.
ok i am not responsible for this but here is the link to the instructions:http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html
also this will void your warranty so you can't get a free replacement from verizon after you root
update: these are instructions for windows if you search around you can find instructions for linux and mac (i rooted on a mac so if you need help PM me and i will respond when i can (i am not an expert))
ok so once i dothe root or whatever will my contacts still sync with google?? I cant get a replacement phone anyhow because I bought this phone from a private owner, but I did not have problems with it until right after I did the upgrade a few weeks after I bought the phone.

Yes, you can still sync with Google. (Did someone say g00gl3?) Lolz
Anyhow, just do some research as you choose which rom to load. Every rom has it's own features and charateristics. Also, make sure to create Nandroid backups whenever flashing from rom to rom just in case of issues. Good luck!
ok since i am very illiterate about the whole rom thing and all that..can you please in your opionion tell me which way to go?? actually the jumpy screen while charging thing is pretty common I believe its a hardware issue though...its my belief the mini usb connecter on the eris is shoddy
plug in the charger and wiggle it you may notice the connetor is not properly fastened to the phone
fyi DO NOT hold the phone up or horizontial by the usb plug...my wife did that to both our phones and ever since then it will flake out
a quick fix would be to plug in wiggle it and unplug you want the mini usb connector back in alignment

No worries - everyone is hesitant at first - no one wants to brick their phone...
What kind of computer do you use; Windows, Mac, or Linux? This is important for following the root procedure.
I still believe the EMA app that I linked is your best bet. It handles the tough command line tasks for you.
As for a rom, you can see by my signature that I prefer Sense-able 3.1 from Jamezelle. But I also really like Evil Eris 2.0.1 by Framework43.
I would probably suggest Sense-able 3.1 for you because it is based on an Eris build. I have found it to be very stable and doesn't really need any tweaks to run well.
*Just wanted to note that I am in no way knocking any other roms or devs on these boards. Thank you to all the talented devs out there for all the work you do!!!*

Just download the EMA app and use it. The thread has instructions to use it. Just read the part about pre-requisites to install the needed software. Then run EMA and follow the center column of 4 commands. Thats really all there is to it.
Like I said earlier, ECLIPS3 and Jamezelle do great work and are willing to provide help. As he said above...

[Q] Real simple. Cash offer to walk me through it by phone or email.

Offer:
I've got a $30.00 PayPal for someone with decent rep here to walk me through the update.
History: This is a new virgin phone, exchanged today. (Sun) The OTA killed my previous phone and I was unable, for whatever reason, to restore nandroid, backup, nada. Until this morning, that was the best phone I've ever had because of this forum and esp the Tips & Tricks thread.
It had: Root, Rom Manager, Titanium Backup, Ryan's OCLF, Autostarts, and MOBILE AP wireless tethering app. (This one is a must for me.)
What I want:
I want the JI6 update installed and the above programs re-installed per the Tips thread... In whatever order you think is best. We verify these things work and I send money immediately. My word is good. (I can re-install my 40 odd apps afterward on my own time.
Background:
I have followed the Tips thread instructions for ODIN. (Open ODIN, press vol up & dn, plug in wire, see COM msg in box, (debug on) mount phone, Pit>...512, PDA>...JI6, START. ..... Nothing! 2 seconds later the message box says something like {All threads complete. 0 succeeded, 0 failed>}
Bottom line:
I've read posts for hours but since I don't really know what I'm doing well, I am also unable to sift through all the advice figuring out which poster's setup is like mine. At this point, I just want it done right.
I will edit this post when it's done. Thanks for reading.
Respond: [email protected]
I'm in the same boat, as far as trying to use Odin. Broken phone, nothing working for me.
So, you took your phone to the store, told them you applied the update and now you're stuck on the vibrant screen, and they just gave you a new one right then and there?
you can drop me a pm and i can try and get you through it. Wont take your money though. Make sure you have odin 1.3 downloaded and the odin flash file for JI6 downloaded. If you can get adb working you get bonus points.
Are you hardware locked? if so you need to download the patch for it also found on here. If not should be easy to get ya up and running with the above mentioned things in place.
If I went to fast or confused you just say so in the pm and we can go as slow or as fast as you need.

you can drop me a pm and i can try and get you through it.

Background:
I have followed the Tips thread instructions for ODIN. (Open ODIN, press vol up & dn, plug in wire, see COM msg in box, (debug on) mount phone, Pit>...512, PDA>...JI6, START. ..... Nothing! 2 seconds later the message box says something like {All threads complete. 0 succeeded, 0 failed>}
Bottom line:
I've read posts for hours but since I don't really know what I'm doing well, I am also unable to sift through all the advice figuring out which poster's setup is like mine. At this point, I just want it done right.
I will edit this post when it's done. Thanks for reading.

Im pretty sure i know what u are doing wrong man. pm me and i can help u out if u havent already
I gave up on unbricking.
No Trunk, It was more of an escalation from a gentle request (at which point they told me "2 weeks & we'll mail it to ya' ".) through several layers of increasing... uhhh... 'amplitude', ("Okay, We'll do priority mail; 3 or 4 days.") culminating in chaining the duct taped Tmo rep's feet to the back of my hog for a quick ride up the street. ("I think we have one in the back, let me check...")
Cyber, your posted phone 'resume' sig is the scariest thing I've ever seen. (Except for my ex.) Does that thing have photon torpedoes too? Krap!
Okay, just kidding 'bout all that. Thank you guys for responding. Will send PMs tomorrow. (1 more brick & I'm gonna need mortar...) About 3-4 pm pacific time. Again, thanks.
I had root but no roms, no adb, no hardware unlock. I'm not a sophisticated power user. I loved it the way it was, except for the GPS/compass thing. It was fast (with the lagfix) and tethered wirelessly & easy w/ the Mobile AP, & I had some control over the running programs.
phone power off. (remove battery if you think it will help)
ok had my phone brick today took about an hour of googling, reading, downloading etc to get it to work again
Load odin
plug phone into USB (power off mind you) press and hold both volume keys at once, plug into PC, this "should boot you into download mode ( android guy with shovel screens says DOWNLOADING! once it loads into download mode you should see some Com info at the top left of odin, thats your cue to load the PDA and PIt file. check PDA box press start, and wait, installation should take about 5 mins
I was in motion with ODIN finally, when I accidentally pulled the USB cord out of my laptop. Now, all I get when trying to get in download mode is a graphic of a phone, a yellow triangle with exclamation mark, and a computer.
Holy crap this is a learning experience. Anyone know what do do?

There is a patch to correct the hardware lock? Please provide a link.
Thanks
Edit Just found the link, hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802763 (replace the xx's with tt), and can't wait to fix my phone.

Ok here is your next step by step. First take a deep breath you CAN definitely recover this....
you need to hold down the up/down volume and the power button. The yellow triangle image will go dark and come back. You need to wait till after it goes dark twice then when the image shows up for the third time release the volume side. wait about 5 seconds and release the power. Should jump you back into download so make sure your odin is up and ready

Awesome. Thank you so much. What a debacle. I'm stock again. Or at least, it looks like stock again. Now, to get the OTA update and hopefully this time it won't break my phone. I have no idea why it broke the last time I tried it.
My phone was so personalized before, I feel lost, like this is someone else's phone.
Stupid question... Why not just odin the official JI6 file that's posted and be done with it. Even better forget the JI6 and look at one of the awesome roms by eugene or bionix as they both use JI6 as their base?
Dude....where in OC are ya ?
I'm in Seal Beach,if you don't get it fixed before your stated 4pm pst time...gimme a holler and I'll even bring my laptop and cable.
Save the 30$, but you're buying the beers

Not sure if that was for me or not, but I don't even know what JI6 is... flashing stock was the first time I ever Odin'd anything before.
I don't have much of a rep here, but here's how I did things. I installed OCLF from the market, and rooted (and only rooted). Then I installed ROM manager and did a nandroid (and I did one after each change I made to my phone as well). Then I updated to JI6 through odin. After that, I gave myself MobileAP. Then (because I was hardware locked), I used odin to fix that. As far as I know, you can install everything else you got from the market from there (all root apps not already installed included). I can't really tell you how that lag fix from OCLF works with JI6, as I never actually used that part of the app (I only used it to root).
As a side note, you may get an error with odin if you aren't in download mode (but you may still get a com message). For a sure fire way to get into download mode, open odin, and then plug in your phone (completely booted). Use the adb command "adb reboot download" and you'll be in download mode and ready to use odin. Also, if you mess up, as long as you can get into download mode, you can use odin to flash back to how your phone originally shipped.
Update
Hey guys,
I HAVE JI6!!!
I'm the OP & I just logged on to send the PMs to be rescued. I saw the mini-kies method of installing JI6, tried it, and it worked. I'm re-rooted, oclf'ed, clockworked, & have re-installed many apps.
The MOBILE AP seems to be my last major hurdle. I forgot how I did it last time but it worked great! Now the instructions I think are different??? I don't remember any "flashing" with CW though. I've never flashed anything. I've read every post HERE but I'm gunshy now. Is there a "for dummies" way to do this?
Also, I have lost my Haptic feedback. It seems to be set correctly, but it's just not there. Even when I adjust the intensity up to full, nada. It may have happened after the OCLF install, or playing with Swype, not 100% sure. It definatelt was working an hour ago... Any ideas on this? Thanks.
Thanks for the "PM me" responses. You guys are slowly curing my ignorance. (very slowly...)
Member character...
Yep. The Brickmaster is back. After a 3 day long recovery process from a new phone, I had somehow done it again...
This is to say thanks to the multiple members who offered personal help but in particular, to the one who gave it. After a PM, this man called me back and for 2 straight hours on a Friday night, with no request for, or guarantee of payment, patiently led me through the technicalities of an Odin recovery. Somehow, he fixed my phone. And I got a little more education.
During the course of this call, it turned out he is an Iraq war veteran with a new baby who is re-enlisting in the military to serve his country even more! Thank you so much for your help, and my gratitude for your service to our country.
.................................................................................................
As for me, being a natural born electronics genius is rough. Last night I elevated the art of brickification to a new high. (2 clicks gentlemen. Beat that!!!) The poison pill was OCLF, then Voodoo, BTW.
Oh yeah, PS... If anyone needs their phone converted into a shiny black paperweight, get in touch. I'm among the best out there.

Hard bricked and possible hardware issue. I need advice please.

I recently received a used epic 4g when a friend replaced his phone, all was good but then yesterday the phone froze. I took the battery out and powered it back on it then took a long time to boot (2 minutes+) and once it finally did boot it was unusable and very unresponsive. I looked online and got into restore mode and then encountered a problem, my buttons at the bottom don't work therefore I could not hit the home button to select an option.
So I then used Odin to restore it (Used stock stuff). After I restored it it was working fine again. Then today i dropped it 2 feet off my bed and it went back to booting slow and then being unresponsive once booted. I then tried to restore it with Odin again but I made a mistake and didn't put the PDA file in and now my phone seems to be hard bricked (noob move I know).
I am considering sending it in for JTAG but I have some questions. Do you guys think the SLOW booting and unresponsive once booted issues were hardware issues? Will it just do that again eventually after I pay for it to be JTAG fixed? Also do you think they would be able to fix the buttons at the bottom? I would appreciate any advice.
Also please don't kick me when I am down, I know not double checking my Odin stuff was a dumb move, that's not what this thread is about.
So to just be sure, you can't power it on at all? The slow booting seems like a ROM problem. If you can get into Download mode you can fix it. If not, then you are definitely bricked and need to take it in.
If you could though, just reodin the proper files WITHOUT rushing.
I've dropped my phone everyday (I've even found out gorilla glass is ass since it cracked) but its always booted unless I did some dumb **** to it.

Thanks for the reply
Correct I can't get it to power on at all. A second opinion on whether or not there was a hardware issue would nice, it just seems odd to me that the exact same thing would happen again a day later. When I bricked it I accidentally only used a pit file. When I did it right the first time I followed a guide and had a pit file and a PDA file, I assume one of those is(or includes) the ROM but I don't really know a lot about this stuff. I am considering just selling this one on ebay as-is if you guys think its a hardware issue and getting a new phone but if not I'll send it to be fixed.

Thanks!! that did it. I had actually already tried that but tried it again when you suggested it I couldn't get it initially but kept trying and eventually tried unplugging it and plugging it back in while holding one and power the whole time and that got it. So was the slow boot thing happening twice just unlucky or is there something else I need to root or whatever?

My guess is the slow booting was data corruption. A clean install should fix that. After Odining in the stock EL30 run it like that for a few days to see how it is working before looking into rooting it and a custom ROM.

Thanks guys, saved me $50s should i have sent it in. I appreciate it. I watched a few of the videos on rooting it and I saw the recovery program used to root things lets you use the camera button as apposed to the home button for selecting things. Think I should switch to that since my bottom buttons are broken? It looked like I probably wouldn't be able to navigate back in menus after selecting something but that would be better then not being able to select anything.

If they are still broken after a fresh Odin then yes the newer CWM will work fine for you. There are widgets somewhere (don't remember) to add those buttions to your screen once you get it working right.
If the buttons really are toasted there are two fairly good onscreen button apps available. One is called Zmooth and the other is called Button Savior.
