SD Cards - Hero CDMA General

Who here is still using the original SD Card that came with their Hero? I am and I'm finding that its absolutely horrible whenever I attempt to do anything with roms because there's practically no space left.

Just spend the money once. Buy a 16 or 32. It will last all the way through your hero. When your done format and use on your next phone. (unless the new phone already has a better sd card)

Is there a reliable, fast 16GB sd card?

My Patriot 16GB class 10 died with no warning after <1 month, taking all my data, ext3 apps with it. Its after the Fry's 15 day return policy so I lost my money
I was using it for dta2sd, and also moved dalvik cache to the card, and so class 2 won't do.
Reading reviews, I can't find amything with decent reviews and speed. Kingston seems to be too slow, Patriot is unreliable, Adata also has failure.
I can't throw more money at this if the card will just fail again. Should I just give up the whole idea and go back to a 16gb class2 - I really don't want to give up the speed.
I hope it's okay that I post in the Evo section as a XPERIA X10 user.
I can recommend the Kingmax 16GB class10 microSD card. Mine can write with up to 15MB/s, so it should be fast enough. I bought it new from ebay for around 30€, that should be around 40$. Good price I'd say

Amazing, my Patriot 16 GB class 10 card failed after one month of use too. Sent it in for warranty replacement 2 weeks ago, nothing yet. It especially sucks because it worked so good up until the day it failed.

I've now had 4 Wintec SD cards. All of them burnt out. They just stopped working.
I got a class 10 patriot so far so good, I guess those are pretty iffy). I got it from Fry's (BTW, Fry's WILL price match with Newegg).
The most reliable SD card I have believe it or not is my 16gb PNY class 4. Not as fast, but I've had it for 8+ months and no issues.
Also, I know you're passed the 15 days, but still go in to Fry's and demand an exchange. I went in and exchanged all of those Wintec SD cards, Here's how it went down almost every time:
Me: I want to exchange this SD card. It stopped working.
Sales Associate: It's passed the 15 day return policy for SD cards, I'm sorry.
Me: Yeah, you said return policy, that's not what I want to do. I don't want my money back, I want an SD card that works.
Sales: Nope, sorry.
Me: If you can't help me, get me someone who can.
Manager comes in*
Manager: How can I help you?
Me: I want to exchange my SD card for one that works. This one simply stopped working. I don't want a refund, I just want a new one. Why should I have to suffer for buying a defective item? It's advertised to work and it won't. Just take it back, mark it out and the company gives you the money back. I've worked in retail and I've damaged things out. It happens and it's not the customers fault.
Manager: Well, you see, you're passed the return/exchange policy. I'm very sorry.
Me: That's it? No, I'm a paying customer and this is how I get treated? If you can't help me, THEN GET ME THE NUMBER OF SOMEBODY WHO CAN.
*From then on, it goes to their district manager who simply gets exhausted and doesn't really care so they give me the okay and I get the exchange. Now, they don't argue and they just exchange it.
I'm not talking about abusing a return policy at all. If something simply does NOT work, then yes you should get your way. I don't care if it's a little passed 15-30 day return policy. Now mind you, I'm not talking a year after the return date, that's just messed up, hahahaha.
If you break something, then you break it. Don't go looking for an exchange, that's just ugly.
I just ordered a sandisk 16gig class 4 for $24 shipped. I hope it works good.

Once again, buy from tiger direct, Jewett. Etc. Somewhere where they let you swap out If If If If you have a problem. Like I said, 30 dollars for a class 10 is an amazing deal. 16GB class 10, buy online or in store for 34.99. They are in the camera section, not the phone section. Comes with the adapter.
I went and got them in store as I wanted them without waiting and if there are issues it is much easier to take it back and *****, second one is a backup and for if I do get a tablet.
So far the speeds are AWESOME, tested out great with the app. Transferring everything over now from my 8gb class 4 card.
Partitioned out 1GB for A2SD and the larger roms that are coming out.

Take it back and wait for the 32GB?

Before you start... yes.. i know it's a personal decision.. which is why i'm asking YOU. What's would YOU do in my shoes?... let's begin
I bought a 16gb a week ago. I have a ton of accessories coming in tomorrow for it. BGR dropped a screenshot of a 32GB model (along with a Galaxy Nexus II).
http://www.bgr.com/2012/10/03/google-nexus-7-32gb-galaxy-nexus-ii-rumor/
My only complaint about this tablet is the 16GB of storage... so here are the options.
A) Take it back and wait - I still have my xoom wifi with 32gb... which is why i'm spoiled on that storage amount
B) keep it and either sell it or give it away once the new one comes out and buy it outright - My mother or my sister would likely be getting this one while the other got my xoom. I hesitate on this one becuase I'm probably not going to get anything close to what I paid for it.
What would XDA do? chime in.
C) I wouldn't have bought it in the first place if 16GB wasn't enough for me.

Storage isn't a problem for my device.
If you already have a tablet I'd say return the Nexus and wait for the 32 GB to drop, the thing is we have no idea when it could be. It may be next week, it may be black Friday or it may be Christmas.
I have the 8 GB that I bought a little over a month ago and when I'm sure the 32 GB is readily available (like I can go into staples and buy it) I'm going to sell my 8 GB for it and be happy with it for a while until e next big thing comes out next year.
Let me go ahead and quote some Sheryl Crow lyrics here.

No, return it and pick up the 32gb one. You've only had it a week and you just found out there is one with larger internal storage coming next week. Office Depot already has it listed on its website, though it's not available for purchase just yet. Staples has it in its warehouse right now waiting for the streetdate. This isn't a case of "Well, the Nexus 10 is coming soon, and there's a new Asus coming next spring", this is a case where you know it's coming in a week or two. Yes, otg storage fixes the issue nicely and cloud storage works great, but if you can do it and not have to go through any amount of serious trouble to do so, why not? It doubles the space you have internally right now in addition to the cloud and otg storage. There literally is no downside to returning it and picking up the newer model aside from having to run setup again. At the very least pay close attention on Monday when Google has their announcement, find out how long a wait it will be to get it. I'm fairly confident it'll be available within a week or two of the announcement.
Return it. 16 is too small. USB OTG is OK but still a pain in the butt.

Again, we're not talking about a theoretical tablet that may be coming someday soon, we're talking about an upgraded Nexus 7 that some lucky people have already been able to buy. I really don't understand some of the posts in this thread talking this guy out of swapping it out, it almost sounds like sour grapes here. "I'm stuck with a 16gb tablet, why should this guy luck out?" You're telling me that, given the chance, you wouldn't wait a couple of days and drive down to wherever you bought your tablet from and exchange it for one with twice the storage at zero cost to you? This may possibly get pushed back just a bit because of the Google announcement being cancelled, but you know it's coming within the next week or so, so go ahead and make the exchange.
Return it and get 32GB, even if you dont use all the storage at least you have it. I pre-ordered my 16GB from play, im now miffed theres a 32GB one as im always short on space. I use OTG but its messy compared to on-board storage, cloud space is all well and good when you have WiFi but frustrating when out and about. Gonna buy a 32GB when they come out then give 16GB to Mrs
More memory = greater power drain? Might be negligible though.
Also, storing tons of apps/media on the device may slow it down.
FWIW, I have had a 32GB SDcard in my Android Smartphone for about a year now, and 20GB is still free.
If both were the same price, I'd get the 32GB version.

UPDATE:
So after calling a local Staples they confirmed they had a 32gb nexus 7 in stock, but no amount of sweet talk would convince the sales lady to let me buy one. She is going to hold one for me until tomorrow morning though. Luckily I found the 32gb Nexus 7 listed at office depots website last night.. mysteriously that listing has disappeared today ... hmmmmm. I will swear to you on my life.. that the listing did in fact exist on the office depot website. Anyway.. it prompted me to list my N7 on which I just returned from selling.
So.. the current state of affairs is the 16gb Nexus is sold (got $220 for it), and staples is currently holding one for me to pick up tomorrow barring any disastrous acts of God or nature.

8GB rather than 16GB?

Anyone else thought about getting the 8GB rather than the 16GB? I've been thinking about it and I will have unlimited everything on straight talk (T-Mobile), and on my 16GB Nexus 7 with lots of games I'm only at about 4GB used as I stream all of my music from Google Music.

I was going to go with 8GB on the Nexus 4, but after remembering that experience, combined with the discontinuation of the 8GB Nexus 7 (maybe they'll do the same for the N4), and the fact I have enough money leftover from sales, I think I'll go with 16GB

I don't have a huge music library, I don't play games on my phone, and I'd really rather get the photos and videos I take as quickly as possible off the phone and onto someplace that's not as susceptible to loss or breakage. I'm getting a USB OTG cable and I don't think it will be too onerous to use a flash drive for archival storage for stuff I don't need instant/constant access to.

I agree with this. I have an iphone 4s 16gb and barely use 6gbs. Majority of it is just itunes music which I dont even use just put it on the phone for the hell of it. Very very few apps, hardly any games, mainly photos and those are typically transferred onto my computer or icloud back up.
If I do switch back to android this is the device I'll end up. Just dont want to get back into the daily custom rom flashing! and back ups. Thats the reason I left android in the first place. Too many phones!
I've really been back and forth on this. I like the idea of getting it for £239, it appeals to me. But I've used 16gb phone for a while now, consistently using more than half of that in storage.
Of course, not all that was actually used on my phone. I probably had more music than I needed, and the main culprits of storage space were all the nandroid backups, titanium backup and custom Roms I had.
This time, I've decided to go for as long as possible without rooting. Like someone said previously, I'm tired of flashing roms so much, as long as the N4 does what I need out of the
box then that'll do me.
So at the moment I am going for the 8gb, and currently setting up cloud storage for my media.

I still hesitate between the two versions.
But.. Actually, 16 Go = 13.6 Go and 8 Go = ???
At first I thought 8gb because I don't listen to music, watch films or play games on my phone. But I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing that the space is there just in case and it'll also make it easier to sell in the future. If it was a lot more expensive to upgrade then I wouldn't, but seeing as it isnt...
There is absolutely no way I can consider 8gb. Im coming from 65gb and the only reason I am able to take a chance on 16 is because with my new unlimited 4g T mobile sevice, I am trusting that play Music will meet all of my needs. I've already used 2gb in 2 days. Also, I plan on converting my Evo 3D into a pmp if necessary when I'm out of reliable coverage.
Will definitely upgrade to if/when 32/64gb becomes available. My distrust of mobile networks comes from my horid experience on Sprint with my premium data, as they called it.

On my Note 2 16GB I only get about 10GB for using, of which I have only used about 5GB and have 5GB remaining. On the 8GB version of the Nexus 4 how much do you get to play with?
Or is it simply not worth spending time worrying about space and just getting the 16GB?
I have 16GB version, and there is 12.92GB space to play with.

+1, take a 16GB model or you`ll be sorry afterwards.
I'm using 8GB and it's sufficient for me since I throw my videos/music to my Nexus 7, so I keep only the apps I need on the phone.
However, with WhatsApp implementing the auto image download "feature", if you have contacts who are happy-go-lucky with pictures, you might have to do some house cleaning every now and then.
If you plan on using the N4 as a primary Android device, you'll likely want the 16GB. If you have a tablet however, you may only want certain apps on the N4, and 8GB may suffice in that case.
I plan on having my games on my N10 and "mobile" apps on my N4, so 8GB should be fine in that case for me. I know when I just had my 8GB N7, I found it a pain.
I have ~4gb free on a 8gb. I don't keep videos on my phone, I use pandora for music, I keep ~1gb of podcasts and I don't do any racing/fps gaming. I didn't go 16gb because I honestly didn't see the point, if I'm storing video/games 16gb is going to run out quickly as well (most of my movies are ~8gb and I'm not going to reencode/redownload just for my phone and a lot of the good FPS are 2+ gb.)
Thanks for the replies. I have just deleted the FPSE roms (I hadn't even used them) I had on my Note 2 and I am now only using just over 2GB. So maybe I'll be okay with 8GB.
To be honest I will only be getting one because it's cheap (compared to others), it's unlocked and it can be my device for when I feel like switching to Android.
So I'm selling my Note 2 and going back to the dark side if you like. Apple is calling my name again. But since I'm a switcher, getting a Nexus 4 will mean I can always come back when I want to.
I have no real preference over the two anymore, I like them both in different ways. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I just hate the effort I go through each time to switch. Having two devices will be the better idea.
I have a Nexus 7, which I'm going to give to my mum. But it doesn't offer what I was looking for, thanks to many apps not being available without rooting.
16 isn't enough for me I love Gameloft games though and like the nicer screen of the n4 as com paired to other phoned

16gb, it's worth the extra $50 as Google went way out of their way to force us to use cloud which I will not support. No sd support (it's too complicated for us ), no otg support for some reason lol.

I'd say it's worth the extra $50 for the 16GB model (to be safe) but I am currently on the 8GB model and it's working out just fine for me.
If you're ok with storing things in the cloud you'll be absolutely fine. My dropbox is setup to send all the pictures/videos I take on the phone to the cloud and I use google music to stream all my music. Both services work great and free up my phone for essentially just apps.
I bought the 8GB model from a dude from CL since he was selling cheap.
I don't put any music/videos on my phone so I manage fine for the most part.
Only negative I have is that I don't have as many nandroids as I usually would have.
Unlimited data is much welcomed.

I never see the point in keeping multiple nands bit that's just me. The $50 difference was totally worth it in my eyes. Even if I don't fill my phone its a nice comfy pillow :highfive: plus I am always by my laptop and my n7. (32gb) :good:

Well I feel it's good to have when I'm jumping between multiple ROMs.

Worst phone ever!!!

I regret buying this phone every day I have it.
Verizon running 5.0.1
Anyone else have random reboots, erasing, reformat the SD card?

I have never run into any issues at all on my phone, sounds like you should either get a replacement or a new phone altogether. I'm running verizon 5.0.1 too.
I agreed 100%, 5.0 is so bad, I have to flash back to 4.4 which is definitely better, but still not up to the flagship standard Battery life is horrible even after I disabled 95% of the bloat ware. At least it less stutter than 5.0. Overall I am not happy with this phone. Now if we have unlocked bootloader, that would be a different story.

I can't even flash back! I will NEVER buy another Verizon branded phone again, nexus from here on out

Other than the screen, I pretty much hate mine. I'm not sure if it's the usual Samsung crap, Verizon's crap or I'm just sick of it.
Same here. After the update this phone is a 5.7 inch turd. Overheats, battery life sucks and it goes black constantly. I hate this thing and Verizon. I will buy unlocked unbranded phones from now on.
No problem with this phone, running 5.0.1 no root... no lag,,no black screen, disable a couple bloatware, no SD card problem....
Why is it so hit and miss I wonder? I'm gonna try to take it to verizon and have them reflash it completely and see if that helps cause right now it sucks so bad I can't trust it to even be reliable. I'll be getting a nexus 6p come Feb so I might not even bother.

It's just the Verizon version by the way. I know and have used the AT&T and tmobil ones and they are great! Fast, lag free smooth. Leave it to verizon to screw it up

Just erased my entire memory card!!!!! AHHHH
plugged it into the computer to load some movies and it shuts off, powered back up and card is completely blank!

that sucks. you sure it's not your card? my old samsung phones never liked SanDisk cards, and would always corrupt them. stopped using SanDisk in general and started using samsung sd cards and I've never had a problem on my note.

That's what I was using, and figured it was the card the first time. Then it did it to my pny and samsung.

PNY are horrible cards. I'd avoid them. They tend to break SD slots too.
I've been using a 32GB Sony card in mine and haven't had issue with it. I've never even removed it. It was ten bucks on amazon.
The point I was trying to make was, it doesn't matter what card it is, it's the phone that's the issue.
I don't even have a card in it anymore because it'll just get erased. I've had 4 different cards now, all same results

I know for a fact that if you go to a Best Buy with a Samsung kiosk. They have the capability to reflash your phone for you. Whether or not you get someone that will do it for you may be completely random, but my father had to have his reflashed by them and they did it without any problems.
Use the Verizon Repair Assistant if you can't find somebody to reflash it for you. Wouldn't the end result be effectively the same? I was having some battery issues that kept surviving a factory reset, once I used it, my phone was back to normal. It downloads the latest stock firmware from the net and flashes it. (PS- Take your SIM and SD card out when doing it, it jacked my SIM.)

As for my hate for this phone growing, I was going to go buy a new phone, but since I'm stuck on Verizon, it's all crap. I don't do LG or Motorola, so I nearly got an iPhone 6s Plus. Instead, I just picked up an Otterbox Symmetry (You can get Symmetry and Commuter cases for under 15 bucks right now.) case and a new Nillikin glass protector and I'm going to attempt to psychologically convince myself that it's a new phone. Hopefully I can play along for another six months or so.

how do they break your card slot? I've been using a pny 128 in my galaxy tab for a while now and it's fine.

No clue. I assume it is from when they inevitably burn out (the gold connectors turns black) while inside of the unit. I've had a camera and a netbook both fall victim to permanent damage after using PNY cards. I did some research online and apparently I'm not the only one. Not to mention they have a high failure rate themselves and PNY flash storage is pretty much known as garbage universally.
