Help with self-inflicted keyboard problem...... - Fascinate General

If anyone can shed some light as to what I need to do, I'd greatly appreciate it.
So I rooted my phone. After doing so, I just wanted to remove some bloatware.......so I downloaded Root Explorer. I did install Clockwork and Titanium backup before doing anything also, fwiw.
Over the past couple of days, I have been disabling some of the stupid factory apps.....and also began using LauncherPro. I like LP much better, except for the fact that it only uses Swype keyboard (which I hate). While I was looking for the last two apps that I never use (so I could disable), I decided to disable Swype.
I at least I hope to give some of a good laugh with my stupidity today. And my problem now is that I can't use my keypad at all......in any app, or anything. I freaked out, and also figured I didn't have too much to lose either....so I decided to try and do a backup. No success. I did a factory reset, no succcess.
Suggestions?

Do you mean you tried a restore?
And you are able to use any keyboard you want with any launcher. Just long press and select input method.
Go back into titainium and unfreeze swype.
Next time just install a custom rom with all the bloat already removed.
Worse case, do a odin restore

I think he deleted the apps through root explorer..like he said brother just do an odin back to stock and if you want to remove bloatware use titanium backup to freeze apps instead of just delete them. Or if you download something like jt1134's super clean rom bloatware will already be gone. And just for the record launcher pro doesn't just use swype..if you long press in the text field and select ' input method ' you can change keyboards..in fact try that lol before you do anything else.
Hope this helps!

Yes, I tried to do a restore. I figured out another method though, and was successful.
And no, I can't change from Swype on LP for some reason....when I long press the only thing that shows is Swype.

I actually didn't delete anything, just renamed the apps I didn't want to .bak.
What I was able to do is download Root Explorer to my desktop, then drag it on the root of the phone. With the Fascinate, there is a folder that says "My Files", in which I can run an app from the root. What I had to do, since I couldn't use the keyboard......is send myself a text over the internet with "Swype.apk" and copy the text, then rename the swype file back from bak to apk by pasting the text into the field. Worked like a champ.

Slick move brother

Removing bloatware

I have tried to remove some of the bloatware (blockbuster, trialware, vzw junk) with no luck .I have tried both deleting the apk or renaming to .old in root explorer and as soon as I reboot it comes back. I know I have root because I have ran setcpu and other apps requiring root. Is thete anything I need to do differently? I am coming from the original Droid.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
I would not recommend removing the bloatware entirely, but instead buy Titanium Backup pro. With that, you can freeze the apps so they can't be seen or used, but if and when we get an update, you won't have to worry about trying to find the right files.
Bloat
I have rooted using Z4 and removed bloatware using Titanium with no problems.
My purpose in removing the bloatware would be to save battery, memory, space and not to have stuff running in the background I do not want or need. I don't really want to flash a ROM. Is there a way yet to remove the VZ stuff after rooting?
I would use Titanium Backup and freeze those programs. If you remove them completely, you won't be able to install OTA updates, like the looming Froyo one.
Thanked. Now freezing means they are still there and take up space but not memory or battery life? They are not running?

Yes, that's what it is. Freezing them in Titanium backup essentially removes them, but leaves the files in place. You won't be able to access anything that is frozen outside of Titanium Backup until it is thawed. When you get a notification about an update, just thaw all the frozen apps, and update away.
I do a similar thing. I change the file name to name.apk.bak so it doesn't appear. But leaves it if I want to restore.

I read elsewhere that if you just rename the files to .apk.bak they reappear on a reboot.
Also, I am looking for a way to remove the Bing garbage, hopefully a batch process of some sort to replace it all with Google.
The D17 ROM looks nice but it also appears development was just stopped while it was still beta? I cannot find a good explanation of how to get the ROM on there. I keep seeing "Odin" but cannot find the latest version download link and there are no tutorials on how to use it.
If you don't know how to use odin you shouldn't bother with flashing 0_o one mistake in there and you can easily be done.......
Also, if by DL17 CLEAN ROM, then you can rest assured it works fine.. There are no bugs..
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA Premium App
Aye, you are correct, I have no idea what to do with Odin. That's pretty much the reason I didn't want to flash a ROM. With a WinMo phone flashing a ROM is easy...I am completely n00b with Android.
The only reason I would flash it is the whole "CLEAN" thing. I would prefer to achieve that effect without the need to flash. Rooting my new phone was nerve wracking enough, but I got it done due to these forums.
You could always use Launcher Pro and just hide the apps.

Lol, I got your back man.... If you ever want to flash a rom or need help with odin, just pm or something...
When it comes to odin, as long as your connection is guaranteed, and you use **pda** instead of **phone** you should be golden... Even if something does go wrong, it is really hard to brick samsung phones xP

How do I delete some of the bloatware on my rooted stock rom?

I love the blur but I ant stand some of these programs that are running in the background that I don't even use like Verizon navigator.... how do I uninstall them?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
i found out the hard way it's best to not delete them. try titanium backup and make a full backup of your phone and go ahead and get the pro version which allows you to "freeze" bloatware to keep it from running. i read that TB has a problem restoring some apps in froyo 2.2 so be careful no matter what you do. it takes forever to get any help around here (yes i know it's all voluntary, but still....) so use the time to read up on these subjects.
Try root explorer and rename the apps to .bak, they are in system/app. Or use titanium backup to delete them ( make a backup first )

I also advise you. Do not uninstall. rename to "vznav.apk.bak". the system will no longer recognize them with the new "backup" extension.
The reason being - when the next upgrade arrives for the X - you won't be able to receive it unless you have all of Verizons crap on your phone. So you look through your
system/app
folder and just re rename all your ".bak" (vznav.apk for example).
and before you do anything - make a back up of your phone using the DroidX Bootstrapper app.
Just my .02 cents.

How-To Reinstall Your Sprint Visual VM under CM7!!!

Finally!!! A solution that worked!!!
I DO NOT CLAIM CREDIT. I'M PROVIDING THIS FOR THE GOOD OF THE FORUM (Original post found here)
Download the Sprint VVM 5.1.0.48 Titanium Backup zip: Download attached below
Extract the Sprint VVM 5.1.0.48 Titanium Backup zip to the root of the SD card.
Download & install Titanium Backup from the Market.
Launch Titanium Backup and make sure Sprint VVM is removed (if not, use Titanium Backup to remove it).
Install the Sprint VVM (/sdcard/sprint_vvm_5.1.0.48.apk).
Launch Titanium Backup, select Sprint VVM, select Restore and select Data Only.
NOTE: There is App+Data but it doesn't work.
Launch the Sprint VVM and "Compose" a message to yourself. It will test send and receive functions of Sprint VVM.
Enjoy and report back to the XDA thread with your results.
NOTE: If the above steps do not work, try manually placing the contents of the folder (titaniumbackup) into the preexisting titanium backup folder, i.e. install the APK as instructed, but also extracting the three files within the contained folder into your titanium backup folder.
I can verify and confirm that Sprint VVM (SVVM) works under CM7 Nightly 12 with the stock kernel, using the above method.
NB: On receipt of new voicemail, a text from "9016" will be sent to your phone. I'm using the basic CM7 MMS app and haven't figured out how to stop these notification texts, but that's a minor annoyance to have SVVM back!
Holy crap - thanks! I have seen this solution before, but no one posted a backup file with it. You fixed my voicemail for the first time since I flashed the first unofficial cm7.
Thanks bro
This worked perfectly. Thank you!
Sweet! This works!
Thanks so much!
CM7-RC2
I've tried a number of versions of the VVM app without success but I'll give this one a whirl.
Thanks!!! : )

Ditto! I have tried various other techniques and this finally worked!
Would be nice if this could somehow be packaged into a single APK though. Anyone know how to do that?
it took me few times to figure out the direction since i already had titanium and i just switched to a new sd card
But, its working Thanks
Sprint vvm has always worked with cm but it is the annoying texts you get with each voicemail. You can use handcent or chomp sms and blacklist the texts fyi.
Ok so im having a hard time figuring out what im supposed to do. ill just list my steps and yea i would appreciate any help.
1. Downloaded the zip and extracted it on the root of the sd.
2. installed titanium backup
3. through TB I checked to see if there was any copy of sprint_vvm (there wasnt)
4. I found the sprint_vvm.apk and installed it.
- This is where i get lost
5. i go back to TB and look for a restore button. i see the Backup/restore tab so i assume thats
the right place. I find the app in the list but when i select it the only options i have are are to
freeze, un-install, backup, run app, and wipe data.
sorry if this seems like a dumb question but im pretty stumped.
I've seen this reposted so many times, this should be like seriously stickied! Thanks for the info though, I'm sure someone will benefit from a more recent post of this.
When you see those options you listed THATS how you uninstall it. You should first backup vvm in titamium while running a sense rom. Make sure vvm is working, backup, wipe and flash CM then follow dirs

Sprint VVM isnt open source. To avoid being taken to court things like this are left out.
Thank you for including the TB file.. my issue was I could never get TB to show any backed up VVM from a sense rom... and google voice caused a horrible wakelock when I tried using it.
If this works, will be freakin awesome... thanks again.
**edit** I think I'm gonna go ahead and delete the TB folder on my sd card that way this folder will be the only one there. I can create new backups with TB when the time comes.
Handcent can't properly block those 9016 messages I still get the notification, (not sound,) and my home widget shows the message count. The only solution is to view blacklisted items and remove them individually. Apparently it's a known bug on their site.

Yea, it has always done this to me as well. I had the notification for it but couldn't clear it and it still showed on my dockbar counter.
PITA but not as much as getting a TEXT, a notification and an email from google voice to go along with the GV wakelock I had. It is what it is I guess.

I felt like I found heaven once I saw the post and file that I referenced. It was a Godsend because SVVM is actually pretty useful (and it reminds me of the same function on the iPhone -- that was perhaps its best feature, AFAIWC).
It probably should be Sticky-ed.
MODs: how do we get this "stuck" so people can find this solution easily?
Yep, it works!!
I was trying for about an hour tonight to get Sprint Visual Voicemail back up and running on my Evo. Thank you VERY much for the awesome info and download!
I, too, can verify this method worked on my HTC Evo 4G.

superclean vs stock questions

I have stock EB01, and have removed or frozen most of the apps that came stock, but kept touchwiz, calendar, calculator, vcast song id, media player, file browser, weather clock, gallery, clock, email, write and go, task manager, and opera.
if I go to a superclean rom, can I successfully add all these back in? will there be much of a point installing a superclean rom if I am just going to add these things back in? and last but not least, if I keep all these apps and touchwiz, is there any other "fat" I can trim from the stock rom?
I ask because some have said not all apps will install right from a clean rom?
You can root it the way it is now and use root explorer to copy the apk's from /system/app and paste then to your sd card and put them back when you install your new rom.
You can also use titanium backup to save the apps and data you want and restore them when you flash your new rom.

That will work if the ROM he is on is deodexed. If not, the apps won't play nice with a deodexed ROM.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
like my post says, it's stock, de cluttered with titanium backup, nothing else.
how do I deodex it? what does this do?
titanium backup doesn't actually let me reinstall anything, not sure if it's titanium backup, or something else, but I'm starting to regret having payed for this stupid app, as it doesn't seem to work as advertised.
is there a better, free app that actually works?
Just to clarify, your phone IS rooted right? I can see Titanium not letting you uninstall stuff if it didn't have root access, but the first thing I did when I got the phone was root it so I have never tried to use it un-rooted.
if the phone wasn't rooted, how would I be running eb01? of coarse it's rooted. uninstalling isn't the issue, installing from backup is.

ok smartass... Then back up a few posts and realize that you did more than just root as you also had to install some rom to get EB01. What rom was it? Go to that source to make sure its deodexed.
If it is then you already have your answer in the first two replies.

My advice is to nandroid backup your current setup and then just try a superclean ROM with the apps that come with it, (maybe try a theme with custom apps as well,) then change out the things you still want to change (the list will shrink). If you don't like it or find you can't get an app to work that you need, just nandroid or flash back to your current setup.
SuperClean doesn't just remove stuff, it puts in better stuff in its place.

From what you are asking here I can tell you this... From SC2.8 you will be able to add back TouchWiz, Calendar, Media Player, Gallery, Email and Task Manager. There are a number of different clocks that are included, but I'm not sure which ones you specifically are looking for. Adrynaline has provided a number of "stock apps" that you can selectively download and install (I'm personally grateful that he included Daily Briefing). As of yet I have not seen any APK's for Write and Go. Also Opera is a separate install from the Market. It is not included in any stock distro from VZW or Samsung.
Just download Adrynaline's patches listed at the bottom of his latest SC2.x post. He has other things like Nuance and ThinkFree Office too.
Hope this helps.
Titanium backup installs the app when you restore it. I'm not sure what you mean by not working as advertised. Back-up an app that you got from the market place uninstall it. Go to the bottom of the app list in titanium it will show the app greyed out with a line through it. click the app hit restore and choose app and data. Its very simple.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
right, that only works for market apps I can get back very easily. when it comes to an app I might need to restore to get back OS or phone functionality, or that I can't get from the market, the restore button is greyed out.
If the restore button is greyed out, you never backed up said application. Data maybe, but not app.
Hi. I'm a big fan of SuperClean. I'm currently running SC 2.8 Voodoo with EB16. My battery life is just OK. Adrynalyne recommends to downgrade the modem to DL09. However, I like to tether. I'm wondering if the DL09 modem has the Verizon monitoring in it or not. Thanks for your help. I would post directly on the developer form, but I don't have enough posts
I'm running superclean 2.9 nonvoodoo. Superclean uses less ram than stock. My battery is excellent running for about a day & a half with moderate use

(EDIT: Don't long press, just tap on the app you want to freeze and you get a menu that will let you back up, freeze, or uninstall.)

Another reason to freeze is sometimes an app is annoyingly attached to the OS that you wouldn't think was. If you freeze it, and suddenly notice other apps acting weird due to dependencies you can just go undo it. I suppose if you freeze something and come back and realize nothing was wrong you could unistall it. I am not sure what the other guy is talking about, but that's more likely because I am dumb than it not making sense.

To delete system apps you need root, once rooted you are not gonna be able to update via ota anyway so of you want to delete its fine.
After deleting some app, how to backup the TF? Is there a single click for a full system restore? This is my first time in backing up a tablet.
