I have tried to remove some of the bloatware (blockbuster, trialware, vzw junk) with no luck .I have tried both deleting the apk or renaming to .old in root explorer and as soon as I reboot it comes back. I know I have root because I have ran setcpu and other apps requiring root. Is thete anything I need to do differently? I am coming from the original Droid.

I would not recommend removing the bloatware entirely, but instead buy Titanium Backup pro. With that, you can freeze the apps so they can't be seen or used, but if and when we get an update, you won't have to worry about trying to find the right files.
Bloat
I have rooted using Z4 and removed bloatware using Titanium with no problems.
My purpose in removing the bloatware would be to save battery, memory, space and not to have stuff running in the background I do not want or need. I don't really want to flash a ROM. Is there a way yet to remove the VZ stuff after rooting?
I would use Titanium Backup and freeze those programs. If you remove them completely, you won't be able to install OTA updates, like the looming Froyo one.
Thanked. Now freezing means they are still there and take up space but not memory or battery life? They are not running?

Yes, that's what it is. Freezing them in Titanium backup essentially removes them, but leaves the files in place. You won't be able to access anything that is frozen outside of Titanium Backup until it is thawed. When you get a notification about an update, just thaw all the frozen apps, and update away.
I do a similar thing. I change the file name to name.apk.bak so it doesn't appear. But leaves it if I want to restore.

I read elsewhere that if you just rename the files to .apk.bak they reappear on a reboot.
Also, I am looking for a way to remove the Bing garbage, hopefully a batch process of some sort to replace it all with Google.
The D17 ROM looks nice but it also appears development was just stopped while it was still beta? I cannot find a good explanation of how to get the ROM on there. I keep seeing "Odin" but cannot find the latest version download link and there are no tutorials on how to use it.
If you don't know how to use odin you shouldn't bother with flashing 0_o one mistake in there and you can easily be done.......
Also, if by DL17 CLEAN ROM, then you can rest assured it works fine.. There are no bugs..
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA Premium App
Aye, you are correct, I have no idea what to do with Odin. That's pretty much the reason I didn't want to flash a ROM. With a WinMo phone flashing a ROM is easy...I am completely n00b with Android.
The only reason I would flash it is the whole "CLEAN" thing. I would prefer to achieve that effect without the need to flash. Rooting my new phone was nerve wracking enough, but I got it done due to these forums.
You could always use Launcher Pro and just hide the apps.

Lol, I got your back man.... If you ever want to flash a rom or need help with odin, just pm or something...
When it comes to odin, as long as your connection is guaranteed, and you use **pda** instead of **phone** you should be golden... Even if something does go wrong, it is really hard to brick samsung phones xP

Hey guys,
I permarooted my phone yesterday, and got rid of amazon mp3 via titanium back up. There's so much more I want to get rid of, but I don't want to delete something essential to the ROM resulting in force closures forever.
I wouldn't mind so much if I was using some sort of recovery with the complete ROM zip in my SD card.
Back to the point, what can we safely delete?
just back up the apps before you uninstall them, then if you have any issues you can just put it back
I found out the hard way, titanium does not backup system apps.

I thought TB did in fact backup system apps. Maybe when I did it with TB it wasn't really backing them up, but it gave me the option to do it so I did. Figured I would back up the system apps to the ROM in case it was somewhat difficult to un-root if needed.
TB backs up only system data, not the apps themselves.

But it can restore the apps from the backed up data, or am I totally not getting what the batch file for the system app is for?

For me, it backed them up and I did see the compressed files. Upon further examination, the compressed files were empty.
What someone else said is true, it does backup the data but it does not backup the app yet it will delete the apps APK files from the /system/app directory. Basically, no way to restore them.
freeze an app first... make sure you get no FC or problems...
then delete it

TB can backup only system app data, that is data from the apps built into the ROM. It does however back up both user apps themselves (elective apps you download) in addition to their data.

I think he just wants to know which apps everyone removed to avoid any issues a head a time.... like a list of what you removed if your not having any issues whats so ever...
I havent got a OTA yet so I cant remove anything either way but if your still waiting to get confirmation on whats def safe to remove Ill let you know when I do it
^^ Great, thanks. There are so many threads and questions about bloatware, methods of removing said bloatware, and which ones are safe to remove.
A running list would be great, and I suggest that additional posts be more specific to assist the more timid amongst us. Thanks.
Could someone be kindly enough to explain what is this permarooted thing for? I did a search and there's guide on how to do permaroot only. and yes I r a nub, my first android. :X
can someone compile a list of safe things to remove?
Please post questions in Q&A section.
I took out a few things yesterday and found out two important things:
1) Even after removing Facebook for Mytouch you cannot add a Facebook sync account using the market Facebook app.
2) Titanium will not restore apps like Peep or Facebook for Mytouch. It lists it as backed up, but there is no option to restore. ('restore all apps and system data' yielded the same results)
There was an alternate FB app out there for a while that fixed the sync issue, but for myself I just reverted to my nandroid backup.
However, aside from the issue above, I experienced no issues on the phone after removing:
Facebook for Mytouch
Peep
News sync
News
Asphalt, RB, etc
I think I removed a few others but don't want to guess at names and spread misinformation.
May I suggest someone compile a list and create a stickie topic for it?

^^ Yeah, well Titanium cannot backup system apps, and therefore, cannot restore them! It only backs up and restores their data.
@Hinouchi
Rooting is the process of, basically, gaining full access to make changes to your phone.
Permarooting is a term used specifically relating to the G2 and Mytouch, which were "designed" to revert changes such as rooting after the phone is rebooted. Permaroot is a process by which you bypass this manufacturer "safety feature" and obtain *perma*nent *root* access.
I suspect you may find a better explanation on Wikipedia, but that's the gist of it.
EDIT: No worries on the content of your question, we're all "n00bs" at something

@floepie
So it would seem! Though I don't recall ever seeing that in what documentation there is for the app.
I'll look again and email the dev if I can't find anything.
There are certainly other ways to backup/restore those apps, but the capability to do so in Ti would be some kind of awesomesauce

I love the blur but I ant stand some of these programs that are running in the background that I don't even use like Verizon navigator.... how do I uninstall them?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
i found out the hard way it's best to not delete them. try titanium backup and make a full backup of your phone and go ahead and get the pro version which allows you to "freeze" bloatware to keep it from running. i read that TB has a problem restoring some apps in froyo 2.2 so be careful no matter what you do. it takes forever to get any help around here (yes i know it's all voluntary, but still....) so use the time to read up on these subjects.
Try root explorer and rename the apps to .bak, they are in system/app. Or use titanium backup to delete them ( make a backup first )

I also advise you. Do not uninstall. rename to "vznav.apk.bak". the system will no longer recognize them with the new "backup" extension.
The reason being - when the next upgrade arrives for the X - you won't be able to receive it unless you have all of Verizons crap on your phone. So you look through your
system/app
folder and just re rename all your ".bak" (vznav.apk for example).
and before you do anything - make a back up of your phone using the DroidX Bootstrapper app.
Just my .02 cents.
With any rom that I have flashed, I have removed a few of the HTC Widgets and Programs.
The problem that I am noticing is that when I delete the apps using root explorer it lowers the amount of space free on my phone.
Example - I flashed the MikShift rom - and removed Footprints, Peep, Stocks, News, FM Radio, and other various HTC and Sprint Apps, but in doing so - it took away storage space from my phone. Any idea as to why, or how I can remove these apps without it taking away from the storage space on my phone.
It took me from probably 330MB free to 240MB free. I came from a Samsung Epic and never had this problem with removing any of these apps.
Not sure on the storage issue, I'm not running any bloated roms, though.
Try removing them with titanium backup, see if it will recreate the issue.

I will try that - I was using root explorer. if i delete them from the ROM before i flash then it is fine. Using the MikSense rom - on first boot i have 368 free in SD and Phone Storage.
on a side note, it seems that every rom i have tried i have MMS issues with. the only one i didnt was preludedrews, I think.
When you say remove with titanium backup - do you mean the recovery hack to delete?

thanks - now i dont have any 3G with the mikshift rom - going to RUU back to stock - re-root - and re-flash it. I just want a speedy decent stock rom without all the BS and working data and MMS for the moment.
I am really hoping that a good MiUi Port or CM 6/7 gets here soon enough. I got tired of waiting for either of those on the epic

I ended up RUU'ing back to stock, re-rooting, re-flashed clockwork, and have used Titanium Backup to uninstall everything I didnt want. I also used the Install Updates into ROM function of titanium and now I have about 360 MB free on my phone, with only Titanium and ES File Manager Installed.

Before removing any sort of bloatware I would suggest creating a recovery image in case something goes wrong. The last thing you want to do is brick your device and not have a backup you can restore to.
If done properly, there should be quite a bit you can remove. I remember removing bloat off of my A500, until I found ROMS like Lightspeed that basically removed all the bloat already. I would check the dev section for Lightspeed and see what apps have been removed from it to give you a better idea of what could be removed.

There is no recovery for the A100, otherwise I would. I don't plan on removing them completely just changing .apk to .bak in root explorer. Ive also made a backup of the system with Titanium backup

Any 3rd party app which isnt google related you can remove.
Anything further than that isnt really necessary since the other apks are so small in size. Unless you see something eating up ram that youre curious about than just give me the app name and Ill tell you weather you should be able to or not. I dont know the complete list of what can or cant be removed but I know the andriod OS well enough to have an idea of the things you definately need. Ive also done a lot of trial and error on both my phone and tablet lol.
Also, i suggest using titanium backup to freeze the apps and run the phone a few days to make sure you dont get any issues.

What do you mean?
I want to make a clean start on my a500. (3.21)It has slowed down over the past year. I want to erase everything and reinstall apps using app monster. I was thing of flashing my a500 with ICS, but I am not sure whether this only installs the OS alone, but also the apps.
I am curious about ICS as I have waited patiently for OTA upgrade but haven't seen it.
Any tips are appreciated
Thanks

if you want ICS OTA make sure you have the acer enhancement app from the market thats the only way you can get it OTA
I think that if you just hit the privacy tab in your settings menu and choose factory reset it will do what you are wanting. As far as upgrading goes... Yes. ICS updates will only update the operating system, and yes , your apps and settings and clutter would still be there. So if you feel like you are truly bogged down and need to just wipe it all, do that reset. And then after you'v'e used your monster backup, go to the Play Store and grab the Acer Enhancement tool that Gears mentioned. You'll be set. But do yourself a favor and do some kind of backup first. If you are all stock, it might pay out to get root and then get Titanium Backup or other just so you don't lose something that you may have forgot about.
Good luck.

I do have all my apps backed up with App Monster. I am hoping this is all the backup I need. Are you suggesting Titanium Backup as an option. I assume you need root to use T. backup.
BTW...... How can I backup the passwords and settings I have for all the different networks I have connected to?
Thanks again for your input

Titanium Pro version will do all of what you would need and more, but requires root. You have to buy the paid version to be able to save your wifi settings, bookmarks and more advanced stuff than just apps. Totally worth the price if you can't do a backup in recovery. But be sure and save your photos and documents manually. I don't think that Titanium gets those.
I looked for a free way to collect the wifi info. There are a few apps on the play store for this. So if you have already paid for the full version of App Monster then you might just want to find one of them. It might not make much sense to own 2 backup apps...
You can do a factory reset then there is another thing that shows other data folder and you can chose and delete the ones you want
