We seriously need to calm down and post in a civilized manner. I see far too many immature and unnecessary posts that only flame at other posts. There is no reason to tell someone they're stupid for posting something from an ignorant's perspective. If they don't know and they're asking, then politely point them in the right direction. No need to bash on them. Granted, there are some pretty stupid/idiotic questions asked here (some intended for trolling) but still, DONT FEED THE FIRE. Let it go, calm down, and post like they are right in front of you. DONT HIDE BEHIND THE INTERNET TO GET AWAY WITH DISRESPECTING OTHERS! It seriously gets old fast. Act like adults please!

i see nowhere on the general section (which, this kind of topic would be under) where this topic is mentioned. Because apparently, it seems like the Epic forums are filled with little high schoolers who think swearing is cool. Because honestly, it isn't.
BUT, if there is a thread requesting others to be more civilized, then I apologize.
Not this topic, but other topics. Sorry, I should've worded it differently.

+1. This forum has become unwelcoming and almost frightening to post a question within. People around these parts need to chill out.
ONe of the best threads I've read in a while. There are a lot of times where I see people as a question and instead of getting a simple answer they get a bash from someone. We all need to understand that nit everyone knows the same thing. What may be a dumb question to you is not to the op and other people that need to know too. If you have nothing better to do then flame people for their questions don't come on here. Go somewhere else. We obviously dont need you. Thanks

I totally agree with you. I know if ii ask any question and any little highschool or immature brat insults me. Don't go crying to the mods about me handing your ass to you on a wooden plate. So kids let's be nice and remember what we were taught in kindergarden "the golden rule".

Replies are always "wow. You should've searched." Um...the xda app doesn't search. It fc's. And also, whosdaman likes to close general threads about people that wanna know thins about froyo or any other "GENERAL" question.
Not everyone is on these forums 24/7 to be knowing that updates that were announced weeks ago were suddenly canceled.
Not everyone is tech savvy enough to use odin.
Not everyone undertsands the differences between dk28 and di18.
If you're gonna respond by telling someone they should search before posting, why not give them a link to follow leading them to the appropriate thread? That way they can see "oh crap. I should search next time, cuz that's what I was looking for." Assuming they're not on the app, ofcourse.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
And sometimes you follow the instructions and it just won't work for you. (I know, I couldn't get odin to work for me until I used a different cable.) I had lots of help down to step by step instructions. Without the help, I would still have a dead Epic.
I also second keeping thing civil. If we don't we will chase away a lot of good people and information.
George
I agree with the OP every bit.
And besides, at one point even the most tech savvy people were noobs. Everyone had to start somewhere, and asking questions is a good way to learn. Now the pointless questions are about the "delayed" updates Samsung promises. Although, there is no point to get into that once again. The search feature on the XDA app doesn't work, which is also not helpful to new members at all. I agree, just point them in the right direction, and move on, without the snotty attitude. It really isn't that difficult.
I'll be honest, I'm only 14, and I know better than to be rude or swear on the internet when someone isn't familiar with something new.

You know I kinda debated about starting this thread but I finally read enough smartass-think-they-are-better-than-everyone-posts. Im a member on countless electonics forums with thousands of posts with the same user name I might add and this forum kinda tops them all as far as "rude people". Yes, I might be "newer" to these forums, but while most of you were in elementary school, I was working on computers, installing networks and doing competition car audio.
Now lets start.
Why were forums made? For the masses to gather and share information, ideas, buy & sell, meet others and just down right chat to one another. *And for people that got picked on in their school days and decide to be a jerk online because they want to feel better about themselves.*
It seems like almost every single thread I read there is someone that asks the "standard question" that has probably been answered numerous times and then you get the standard response. "Well if you would of read, you would know the answer." Instead of being a douche, you could of just typed the answer, gained more post counts and could of probably got your Thanks Meter up another notch.
I love the answer, "Thats what the search feature is for." Well I'm sure almost all of you have tried to search and maybe your search wasnt bigger than 3 letters which gets excluded or so many other queries come that dont get even come close to answering your question. Sometimes its like trying to find waldo in a book with really really big freaking pages.
Then the, "If you would of read the whole thread you would know the answer" response. Well jesus, do you guys realize how fast some of these threads move? Damn, I can make a post, go to bed, wake up and noticed during the overnight the thread gains 10+ pages. Now imagine you are someone new to this, you have read the stickies, done a few searches, got their phone rooted ok but then notice a bug so they ask the "standard question". Well when you have an ungodly amount of threads and an even bigger number of actual posts sometimes its like finding a needle in a haystack. When just asking a question (Which is what forums were made for) can sometimes save you hours of searching thousands of threads.
Some of the people on this forum just need to be patient and help people out, instead being an ASS. We were all newbies once. And we will all be newbies to some other subject in the future. "Can't we all just get along"
And before anyone does the standard flaming. No, this did not happen to me. Search my screen names for posts if you wish. I just hate seeing in almost every 500+ page thread were someone asks a question and the next few people have some sort of smartass answer.
Just be nice, answer the question and watch your Thanks Meter go up. Simple as that.
If people werent asking questions then these forums wouldnt even be a quarter of the size they are now.
Thanks for reading. Have a great day.
Also, thanks to all the Devs that have spent countless days and sleepless nights to help all of us have a more enjoyable experience with our phones.

Thanks bro, but you are right though, there is a little to much tension at times around here. I have been a member of this site for many years, I had another account but I forgot my name and password so I created this one about three years ago. My point is, I been coming here for over 5 years or so and I am on this site damn near every single day but I never post much if ever. I usually search for what I am looking for at best and then just move on while avoiding the stupid crap. I am also a member of sprintusers, ppcgeeks, androidforums and a few others and they all seem to have their fare share of idiots. Since xda is probably the largest site with the most traffic compared to the others I guess you run the risk of seeing more idiots here as well.
Well said sminker. If people do not like what people post they are just better off keeping it to themselves. Be part of solution not the problem.

Sir you are completely right. People can and will act completely different in this "Alternate Universe" than they will in real life. Why? Becuase they can and it makes them feel a little more "Alpha".
Hey I remember being new to a certain forum not this one though, and asking a simple question. The regular jerks of the forum proceeded to try to make me feel like an idiot. Needless to say my feelings weren't hurt but I guess it's that "Alpha Male" complex.

First off let me say that this is not against Sprint or Samsung (shocker). I know my way around a computer but am no way a developer. Before I ever loaded a rom I read and did my research it took me betweem 24 to 48 hours before I felt confident enough to root and flash and if I had any questions I searched the forums for a solution. Its not hard. Now here comes the complaint. I know they say there are no stupid questions but damn, I see the same question over and over again when there are easily found answers right in front of your face. Don't be lazy and read, no one one here gets paid to answer your questions that have already been answered. I'm not saying there aren't legitimate questions because there are plenty of them and that's not what is bothering me at all. I guess what I'm trying to get at is do the effing research take your time and you will figure it out, and stop asking what is the best rom it is the most worthless question on here because no one can give you the right answer. One more thing if you do run into a problem try and figure it out before running to the computer and then maybe you could actually contribute. That's all sorry for such a long post.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Couldn't agree more. I've been a longtime member with a very low post count. Unless you're the first or second person to download a rom and notice a secific bug to report, the community is large enough that very rarely do you need to post as someone else already has.
Not to mention its a self perpetuating problem. If less people were posting the same thing 10 times, there would only be 1/10th the amount of posts to read through to find your answer to begin with.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
A lot of people say that, and yeah, people need to do some research first or something...but for some people..they really aren't being lazy or anything, they just really dont know that thats what they are supposed to do.
Let me put it like this..I saw this on my facebook yesterday. Someone I know was asking how somebody got their phone to look they way it did (the guy took a screenshot of his Vibrant with a Gingerbread theme). The guy told him to either ask me or to come to xda. Now, the guy who asked had a Hero and doesnt know what rooting is...he probably doesnt even know how a forum (or really, how this forum) works. So when he gets here, the first thing he'll do is register and make a thread asking that question. Since he'd be a new user, he wouldn't know how many times the question has been asked, hell, he wouldnt even really know where to look. It'd be his only question and to him, he thinks that he'll be able to get the answer and leave and its done.
Now, thats the only time I say we should tolerate such behavior. but for users that have been on here a while and have been posting and contributing, there's no excuse.
Typical rant.
You opened a new thread, clogging the front page just like those you hate.
The words you speak will never truly reach those who don't read before posting... by definition.
Waste of time and space, get over yourself.
Why does this bother people so much. Ignore the threads/questions if you have an issue with them. Some people aren't aware of the resources. Being a prick about it doesn't help. These same rants have been done over and over and over...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
What a SHOCKER! Another typical "non-typical" rant.
But, you know, you're right. No one should be allowed to post until they've read all 3000+ posts in this forum. No one is allowed to ask other's opinions on the best ROM. No one is allowed to think differently than you.
Wanna know why the HTC side is so good? It's not because HTC releases source code (You should have seen the community in the early days before anyone released code). It's because the users are helpful. They contribute. They don't rant.
You, and users like you, are the reason the community is falling apart. Get in there and answer some questions. Contribute. Post to the useful threads so they stay close to the top. Add to the Wiki. Don't sit around and complain. These forums are for everyone, not just you.
You have only 12 posts, and the only thing you can contribute is "restart your phone" or "use a different USB cable?"
Here's my plea for the mods to lock this thread before we spiral out of control. What do you mean, it's too late?

Or, you could post a like to the wiki, pointing the noobs in the right direction. Answer the question and the thread falls to the bottom, and useful stuff with high post counts rise to the top.
Here's an example:
"Hey man, totally get where you're coming from. Rooting seems tricky, but it's not. Here's the guides in the wiki. It's got most of your questions answered. The search is useful if you can't find it there. Glad to have you on XDA.
But I guess it's much more useful to post inane responses on useless threads. Crap floats.

I don't buy that at all. If you've been on the internet more than 10 minutes, searching should always be your first instinct.
flat out, most people just dont even know what to search for, keywords will get you the right information, but also knowing the key words is what is troubling the new people.
I'm also one of those old members with years of lurking experience, because i know to search. But, at the same time, i don't tell people to do it. He'll i barley give advice... Mainly because i just come here, give rep, and get what info I need and then leave.
Let the forums grow i say... the more questions are asked, the easier they can be answered later, because of the keywords aspect. If someone doesnt know the keywords, they will ask a question with wrong ones, and then get corrected. and later down the line, someone searching with the same wrong keywords can find the answer... At least i hope it works out like that, i would like to think it does to some degree...
Anyways... my 2c
The only problem I have with searching is this: my laptop crashed a while back so I haver to search with the phone and xda app. The xda app search sucks. It brings up irrelevant posts. So since i can't use the search feature, unless I go to the site through the web browser, I just read the wiki and search post by post lol. I am for the side that says, if you don't like the post don't read it. Be helpful, not insane. Some attitudes on here are equivalent to some one coming up to you on a street, new to the town, and asking where mcdonalds is, and some of your responses would be: Look up in the sky for the big f?%#ing golden arches before I shot you in the head with my glock. That is a little over board. I say search, but if the didn't don't get mad.

Man, more people are familiar with school than the internet...and in school you usually ask the teachers questions before you whip out your book to find the answer. Most people also try to act like themselves online like they do in real life...and since in a real life situation there more likely to ask a question than search for the answer...so first instinct would probably be asking that question, that is, if you arent used to forums (specifically this one).
Very serious business.

Failing to search occurs in ANY forum out there. The difference with the Epic scene is we have more self-proclaimed moderators than any board I am a member of. There are simply too many people trigger happy to call out a “noob” who may or may not know what it is that they are looking for.
It’s a shame that we are so quick to assume that someone is lazy.
I am here several times a day. More often than not, you will see folks spending more time correcting other’s forum posting etiquette than actually helping or contributing. In the other forums I frequent (mostly cars), the members actually help one another and asking questions, regardless of them previously posted, is no problem at all.
Go figure, the forums where mistakes cost A LOT more money in damages is stress-free compared to one that can almost always be fixed with a good old odin.
I definitly feel like an ass for posting this in the first place. I guess I should have been more specific when I posted. I apologize to anyone I offended. I have no problem helping anyone that needs help it just aggravates me when people ask a question one a thread that was answered on the previous page. Hi peeps. Im starting to get really ticked off by the branding string in the build properties.
What do i have to do in build.prop to stop the android market seeing my xoom as a verizon device and see it instead as a viewsonic gtab or whatever?
Why is everyone posting questions in the dev section?
Because they can't read
Sent from my Evo 4G using Tapatalk Pro
let me explain why...
its because i am a dev myself, and i have been here long enough to know that at this stage in a subforum's development no-one from the dev community ever looks in the general subsection
welcome to reality
also, you should understand this perfectly well having joined in 2009... or are you just a snob with a post count?
One might ask what he is implying you cannot read.
Nothing we say will help. Makes me sad they don't know how to follow the rules and have common sense. All you get by posting a question in a dev forum instead of general or q/a is people telling you to post in the right thread. Just do it and they will help.

Perhaps if any of you tight-ass teenagers had read my reasons for posting in this subsection (its the third post, refer to it if you please), you would think again.

Also since your a developer shouldn't you already know how to change the build.prop?
Is none of my concern.
Delete thread please?
Its a very very fine line between being a good administrator and being a clown.
I own a forum with over 2500 members (very small, but thats the way we like it), and am an admin on three others.
I give my mods pretty much free reign to do as they wish, BUT I often find myself going back and cleaning up messes.
It is very important for the continuity of information that threads be kept in the appropriate section. It would have taken less time to simply move this thread than to answer the way that he did.
But as I said, its a rough life as a mod/admin. No pay, no appreciation in most cases, and it does nothing but anger the family...
Take it easy on the guy, he really is just trying to do what he thinks is best for the community. Unless his post was edited, I see absolutely nothing offensive about it. In fact, this thread is more offensive than the one you are referencing.
Ja, you are right about some things. But it should have just been moved.Different viewpoints. I also mod a forum, sorry that this thread offended you, but i got offended seeing a relative newcomer get the cold shoulder when asking nicely.
That is more offensive.
Going to delete the content of original post. My time of the month.
Rant over

Right ok.....
First of all, yes I acted like a ****.
In my defence I'm having to move at least 10 threads a day from general to q&a... despite a sticky and a forum announcement explaining that questions should not be posted here.
When I realised that the thread your talking about was posted by a new member I'm pretty sure I unlocked it and moved it to q&a....
I can't promise I'll pay the same courtesy to members who should know better though.
I have spent the past two weeks moving every [Q] thread that appeared but unfortunately that doesn't help to get the message across.
Like I said, I guess I was being a **** but then again I'm just trying to keep this place tidy for everyone's benefit and if I have to make that point by locking a few threads here and there then I will.

Okay.... looks like I didn't unlock the thread and move it. I have now.
Op, feel free to redo your first post if you want. It was a valid point.

You dont have to explain a thing bud, Its the idiots who cant read that we should be complain about not the mods doing their job.
Alot of people including myself are sick and tired of crap getting posted in wrong places, its really irritating and tbh stickies or announcements shouldn't even need to be made, its pretty much common sense and anybody with half of a brain can see which section which kind of topic goes in and which it doesn't. Obviously though we get some people who either cant grasp this concept who are just too lazy to read forum titles.

Tbh, I agree with you. Nothing worse when someone just types out a question, about something that is probably answered just two threads below.
conantroutman, sorry matey, I didnt mean to have a go at you personally. Had ****ty day too. I do apologise, sincerely. As for redoing the first post, Nah, it IS none of my concern. I really dont mind if you delete/close this thread.
No problem man, dont sweat it......
Im not gonna delete the thread as some may see it as me "covering my tracks".
I will however close it and leave it with the declaration that;
If anyone, for any reason has an issue with the a decision I make in regards to moderating the forums then please feel free to PM me and let me know.
Your statutory rights will not be affected
I for one like the idea of a general topic thread, but I don't understand why someone that trolls is not banned or their comments removed instead of closing the thread.

I agree completely. I'm not trolling with that statement either.
Honestly, now that we have 2 mods another thread COULD be opened. The probability of conflict due to misunderstandings, differences of opinion and, perhaps for some, dislike of a fellow member or members is still pretty high.
XDA stands for something special. It's a community of people trying to advance its knowledge through helping and sharing. Sometimes egos, not excluding mine, get inflated and the perceived need to stand up for what one feels is right becomes too much to let lie.
Sometimes people just throw out bait to see who bites. These instigators are known as "trolls."
The latter is frowned upon, but not necessarily wrong, as long as things aren't pushed too far. The former, well, good luck with that one. Remember that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Doing something wrong just to do it is not ok. Doing something wrong because you feel you are fighting for something important is another story. There is the letter of the law, and the spirit in which the law is written.
Again, I'm honestly NOT trolling.
The few should not be allowed to ruin it for the many.
It would be a great day for our XDA community if our senior moderators would embrace this philosophy and push for this change.

I, for one am guilty of standing up for myself on here. Take it or leave it. I don't let stuff ride. I'm not here to get respect or gain popularity. I do all that I do for fun and to give back. I'm known as a cocky s.o.b but I'm also known to help a fellow member out as much as my knowledge allows. I've spent numerous hours on talk, pm's and email helping people out that just quite can't get it. The thing that just makes me mad is when you see plain stupidity in your face. For example, I've seen at least a dozen people ask "Where is the low mic fix?" when if the person would search or read back 5 pages you'd find the answer. Back when this Glacier thread started you wouldn't even think of asking a question in the dev section without searching at least 10 times and if you asked such a dumb question you would get reprimanded and issued a infraction and your comment deleted. If I would get on someone now, they'd call me names and blah, blah, blah and the poop tossing would begin. The other day I was speaking out against what I thought was unfair in the general section and I don't take back any of it but to have me censored while idiots actually crowd the dev section with questions really made me mad. I have a change of heart now because the moderators are now getting back to the days of old and doing something about the useless posts. +1 to them. Since we had lack of moderating for 6 or so months, the "noobs" that are now senior members think its ok to do what they do and that's when I'm on your ****. Love me, hate me, I honestly don't gaf....end of rant.

I completely agree with you, I think part of it is people want the cool new stuff without actually reading and learning a thing or two; while it's understandable that you may not have time to look things up, we say these things for the benefit of users themselves. Trust me, the benefits of looking up things on your own and asking after you feel you've searched your ass off are far more greater than just being told everything. Going from releasing a port, to building from source, to being asked by awesome to join team inferno and learning some github all within my first few months of developing on my first and only android phone; I'd say I'm pretty good proof of how effective doing a bit of research is (seeing as I had no prior knowledge on how to do ANYTHING but flash a rom). It's not like you're being asked to read a 700 page documentation on the android system... and although better moderation required us to lose our BS thread and possibly some infractions to some long-time users, it's good that we're starting to get that old sense of moderation back...
tldr; XDA isn't here to hold your hand (so don't assume it is), but if you put some time into reading and learning the benefits are basically limitless.

i agree. the stupidity around here is just amazing. take the most recent one i've seen for example. i'm not going to name any names, but you know who you are.
this guy comes around and posts a question in the General Section. that's already a mistake. who doesn't know that Questions go in the Q & A Section? and then, since he didn't get any answers, he ventures on over to the Development Section, literally picks a random thread, and posts his question there. his question has NOTHING to do with what the topic is about. completely unacceptable. and then, when another forum member tells him that he shouldn't do that, what does he do? he goes on calling names. hey man, it's not our fault you have no respect for others. all this person could've done was just SEARCH. Google it, Bing it, Yahoo it, i don't care, you could've at least SEARCHED before you asked. yeah okay, maybe if you had only a few post counts, then i would forgive you, but no, this is a Senior Member, with over 200 posts! things like this shouldn't even happen from such an "experienced xda user". and i'm seeing things like this more and more everyday, not just in in Glacier forums, but pretty much everywhere else. noobs come along with only a few posts, and they see that they need 10+ posts to post in the Development Sections. so what do they do? they spam all the other sections and threads until they get more than 10 posts, then they begin spamming the Development Sections with their stupid questions that could've been answered by a search. and that's not all. since they can't spam the Development Sections with under 10 posts, they spam the DEVELOPER'S PMS. i have over 1000 PMs in my inbox, i'd say over 3/4 of them are useless garbage asked by idiots who are too lazy to search.
now about the off topic threads:
i really like the idea, it's a great way for forum members to hang out and have friendly chats for one another, but one thing i had noticed going on in the old BS Thread was that noobs with less than 10 posts would come here and post until they get 10 posts. i actually even read some other posts that encouraged this action. so while the off topic threads are great, they also have downsides to them as well.
IMO, we should just make it that you can only post in the Q & A Section until you have a certain amount of posts, cause honestly, most of the first few posts are just plain stupid questions that can be answered, by a simple search.

I'm going to act like I didn't read that.
As for the off topic thread. I'll allow one of but once it gets hectic like the last one. *You know who I'm talking to* starting problems calling people etc, it's gone an infractions are handed out.
Yall decide in this thread, who will open it.
