The quality of Modmanship............. - Galaxy Tab General

Is none of my concern.
Delete thread please?

Its a very very fine line between being a good administrator and being a clown.
I own a forum with over 2500 members (very small, but thats the way we like it), and am an admin on three others.
I give my mods pretty much free reign to do as they wish, BUT I often find myself going back and cleaning up messes.
It is very important for the continuity of information that threads be kept in the appropriate section. It would have taken less time to simply move this thread than to answer the way that he did.
But as I said, its a rough life as a mod/admin. No pay, no appreciation in most cases, and it does nothing but anger the family...
Take it easy on the guy, he really is just trying to do what he thinks is best for the community. Unless his post was edited, I see absolutely nothing offensive about it. In fact, this thread is more offensive than the one you are referencing.

Ja, you are right about some things. But it should have just been moved.Different viewpoints. I also mod a forum, sorry that this thread offended you, but i got offended seeing a relative newcomer get the cold shoulder when asking nicely.
That is more offensive.
Going to delete the content of original post. My time of the month.

Right ok.....
First of all, yes I acted like a ****.
In my defence I'm having to move at least 10 threads a day from general to q&a... despite a sticky and a forum announcement explaining that questions should not be posted here.
When I realised that the thread your talking about was posted by a new member I'm pretty sure I unlocked it and moved it to q&a....
I can't promise I'll pay the same courtesy to members who should know better though.
I have spent the past two weeks moving every [Q] thread that appeared but unfortunately that doesn't help to get the message across.
Like I said, I guess I was being a **** but then again I'm just trying to keep this place tidy for everyone's benefit and if I have to make that point by locking a few threads here and there then I will.

Op, feel free to redo your first post if you want. It was a valid point.

You dont have to explain a thing bud, Its the idiots who cant read that we should be complain about not the mods doing their job.
Alot of people including myself are sick and tired of crap getting posted in wrong places, its really irritating and tbh stickies or announcements shouldn't even need to be made, its pretty much common sense and anybody with half of a brain can see which section which kind of topic goes in and which it doesn't. Obviously though we get some people who either cant grasp this concept who are just too lazy to read forum titles.

Tbh, I agree with you. Nothing worse when someone just types out a question, about something that is probably answered just two threads below.
conantroutman, sorry matey, I didnt mean to have a go at you personally. Had ****ty day too. I do apologise, sincerely. As for redoing the first post, Nah, it IS none of my concern. I really dont mind if you delete/close this thread.

No problem man, dont sweat it......
Im not gonna delete the thread as some may see it as me "covering my tracks".
I will however close it and leave it with the declaration that;

Please i mean PLEASE stop spamming the forums!

Take this how ever you want, but i think it's time to start using the search and stop spamming the same questions over and over again.
For example, look at the threads of all the leaked firmwares, they are full of crap. Same questions asked in every page over and over again in every firmware leak.
Pathetic.
Other example would be about flashing the firmware, c'mon SON, read the sticky posts already. No you didn't brick your phone, stop panicking.
Sorry to fill the forums with this rant, but JESUS, PLEASE.
Can only agree with you. Nothing else.
I agree completely. Getting tired of the "How do I flash this?" question. I mean for f**k sake. If you even consider flashing a device, then read the excellent sticky's made. They explain every single thing in detail.
Hear hear! The more I see this crap the more I think of the movie "Idiocracy" and think this **** might be happening now.
this thread is spam.... just saying. The people that cause the problems probably won't find this thread just like they cannot find the other ones.

I agree my man...
Is normal, too many here are getting overly excited about the test firmwares.
Agreed, why can't people do some research for themselves?
clutter. can we get this deleted?
this topic should have been in the General subforum, along with all those other things mentioned above.
but yes, it's true, new people joining XDA forums are not using the search.
i don't have MOD power, else i'll help merging all the same related topics peoples keeps making over and over again.
This needs to be here.
Sure This need to be here.
Most Important Thread i ever seen in SGS forums
I dont know what mods r doing here in this forum. They just let people to fight each other instead of call it quit.
Worst moderators i ever seen in any forums
Shame
I think the search function should be improved.

I do not understand a post like this.
Firstly, anyone who is too lazy/thick/confused/unlucky to not find the info they need before posting is CERTAINLY NOT going to be reading this thread, so all it does is spread your anger on the forum, which is not helpful or pleasant.
Secondly, before anyone can complain about people who do not search, XDA must remove the 30 seconds per search limitation. I have often not found something I want after two or three searches, get tired of waiting for another 30 seconds and then post a question. Im sure this happens to a LOT of the people you are flaming.
Thirdly, I really dont like this culture of arrogant snobbery that a some experienced users/cooks show on xda, its a lot like high school bullying, where a group of people "in the know" put down those lazy/thick/confused/unlucky ones who are not intentionally TRYING to be annoying, they are just lazy/thick/confused/unlucky... so collectively being pissed with them is really for your gratification, not for the good of xda.
Lastly, I'd like xda to also make an OP's rule that the second or third post in a thread is a summary of all the gotchas, tips, warnings, findings... all the stuff that you would never see if you were faced with a 2000 page thread!
tx
Mark.
This in itself is a useless thread, and i feel dirty posting here. However, since the people you are complaining about do not read, then they obviously aren't going to read this are they. A post like this is troll bait tbh.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some people feel if they haven't posted a reply every 2-3 minutes, they haven't really browsed a forum. What the OP says is right.
It is not the goal of a forum to be a place where we can post questions ?
I understand that sometimes it's very annoying to see the same question 10 times again and again, but come on.... We were all newbies one day, with a question that maybe we searched before, and didn't find anything revelant/working, don't you think ?
Furthermore, it's the same problem on every (big?) forum you'll browse. Will you post such thing everywhere ?
I can agree about people posting in wrong section (ie, all in Dev forums to be more seen). Exemple : Your post. Nothing to do in dev.
So before asking people to follow rules, start by following it yourself...
Useless thread.

@OP For me personally, reading a question multiple times is actually far less agitating than reading your aggressive unnecessary and above all self-righteous tantrum.
If this issue really bothers you that much that it leaves you feeling sad, aggressive and hateful of anybody that dares to ask for help, I suggest you seek professional psychiatric help.
EDIT: As mentioned earlier you posted this thread in the wrong section. Hahahahahaha ROFL. Geez man, who peed in your cheerios?!
This thread itself is in fact worse than these annoying annoying questions msung complained about. If a thread really bothers you just report it and be on your way.
I agree that removing the 30 second search delay would help. 10 seconds is more reasonable.

Rant

I've been lurking here for awhile and only recently have been paying close attention since getting an EVO. This is a general rant and obviously cant be applied to every person and Im not saying at all that the forum is not a good resource but....
This forum is by far THE worst i have seen with reposts and redundant questions. Its ridiculous... you get literally 10 threads on the first page with the same topic, and within a thread you get the same question being asked and answered literally 3 posts away from the last time. How is a forum that is supposed to be technical THIS bad with simple reading!?
Threads are basically useless past the first post because because its hundreds of pages of repeated questions after.
For god's sake people, READ. I dont care how excites you are about finding out something everyone else already knew, check to see if theres a thread already. And stop asking questions that have been answered a hundred times already.
/rant
I agree 100%!
I think when you first sign up there should be like a 4 day waiting period before you are allowed your first post. This way, either they will start reading and find the solution or leave and we won't have to worry about it.
EDIT: I know this doesn't apply to people already registered but most are people with low post counts who post repeated topics.

Thanks, now I am going to have nightmares.
yeah i mean i pretty much almost never go into the Q&A section, and general section because 90% of whats in there is a bunch "i dont know how to do this please tell me how" probably because those people never finished their freshman year in college and actually learned how to do proper research... but oh well, i mean the only forum i check is the development one, it seems to slowly be getting better and better. very slowly.
I agree with the OP, however, this is simply a side effect from the forum hitting the mainstream. At almost 3 million users, it is simply impossible not to get these kinds of people. The development forum is a lot better though since it's better curated.
I've learned to simply ignore it and move along. Trust me, it could be way worse.
how do i root my phone... I'm kidding of course
sent from satan fone!
I think I know how to clean up the redundant threads a little bit.
The forum administrator could change the input field for naming your new thread into a hidden Google search box!
So then people type their new topic into the box and WHAMMO suddenly there is >3,000,000 solutions right in their face before they even begin to start writing the body of the post.
The thread starter must then click on a minimum number of links from the googled solutions before they are allowed to actually post their question with a new thread!
Problem solved....
Unfortunately, the search in the XDA app sux.

the problem is it's frustrating for everyone.
and also not to point fingers but there's only one way to really curb the problem.
More information available more easily.
Better more acccurate more updated Wiki or compilation of ALL the basics.
Also, for everyone that starts a thread you need to put in more details, Sometimes I'm amazed at how a developer can master putting everything for the phone together and then post a thread saying..... Here's my rom WEE clicky here, done.
DETAILS install, how to when where what, update and keep things updated.
most of the stuff I can navigate threw myself and thats fine but sometimes theres like 300 pages and your getting no where, if your the thread starter and you add something important to the conversation mid thread, edit your first post.
As far as people posting stupid VERY simple repetitive questions, just try and search it first please, ugh.
I agree with the xda app search sucks.. i get low data speed here in wisconsin usually 30kb/s or under so dont use the internet for the site.. the search should be able to sure certain forums that would help alot of people out who do actually use the search but hard finding it with the app search..
sent from my Evo
Also alot of people dont word the topic right or even have what they are asking about.. like today someone put... help!. Had good info on radios but someone thats looking up the same thing wont run into it.
sent from my Evo
Now that I think about it, the hardest thing to do is run through a 200 page topic and actually pull useful information out of it. An example:
The first 500 replys are:
First!
downloading...
Will DL when I get home...
Downloading now
ect, ect for 500 pages
Then you finally get to the meat of the topic when you no longer see "downloading now" and you start to see "my 4gee's no workie" for another 150 pages only to realize that the answer to all of those questions was in the OP that nobody read!
This cycle goes on and on and it's nearly impossible to gather intelligence from chaos like that.
this is probably the 10th topic about this....just sayin
In your third paragraph, you repeated yourself by saying "because" twice. Practice what you preach. If you think you can do it better, go start your own forum.
I'm just bs'ing/being a smartass. You are okay to have your opinion. I can understand when a person gets in a mood and needs to rant to vent some frustrations. You may also have some valid points.
My parting thought:
It can be said in many different ways. Instead of complaining about something you don't agree with or like, might I make a suggestion to volunteer yourself to make things better. Trying to focus on solutions instead of problems.
Don't get me wrong. I'm no saint. Some people really irritate the crap out of me too, plus, I know I'm not mr personality either.
The mods have their hands full (I'm sure that's an understatement). If you can do your good deed for the day and help out a newb, then you are giving back.
:end of rant:
This forum desperately needs more moderation. I messaged toast over a month ago with this suggestion and offered my help as I have moderated other forums. He never even bothered to respond.
For a tech forum, moderation is the difference between good and lousy. Self policing can only go so far.
As for the search, there is no problem with it. VB is the most popular forum software for a reason. It works very well. Pro tip: 99% of your searches should be title only.

The big problem is when people get their EVO, they realize their battery lasts 20 minutes out of the box. They then get on google and try to find out how to increase their battery life. They find an article on some douchebag blog talking about rooting their phone. These people then google rooting their phone and all signs point to XDA. Sometimes they know a guy or have a friend of a friend who told them to "root" their phone, skipping the first step.
This is exactly why there are 100 repeated questions/threads. Everyone is directed to this website from various other websites. So you will get people who want instant answers and don't want to wade through tons of replies/text.

Senseless and juvenile threads, why is there no moderator here?

Lately this forum has been littered with senseless and useless garbage. People are starting threads only to say stuff like "I got Froyo...not!". I thought the point of this community was to share information and be helpful to others in need. Who is the moderator here (do we even have one? I have yet to see one post), and why is all of this nonsense allowed to fly?
here...here.
Amen, this **** is getting really old.
YOU ARENT FUNNY OR ORIGINAL.
Theres at least 3 or 4 topics on the first page with this bull****, why hasnt it been cleaned out?
My topic was deleted immediately after my problem was solved, yet all these 12 year olds run rampant here in the General section, completely unchecked.
Funny, i reported to moderators the same thing you are saying a few minutes ago... i mostly just ignore those kind of posts, but it's getting very old to come in here and just read senseless threads all over it.
If they where at least original but three threads for the same stupidity, seriously?
Vibrant vibrating nicely now,Kthx!
I think the moderator is also a developer. Properly moderating this forum would probably require at least one full time salaried employee.
I agree though, this is quite possibly one of the worst boards I've ever read. If you check out the other sections of this site it seems pretty normal, vibrant section is like west Baltimore. No idea why that is, different overall demographic I guess, lot of kids, who knows.
Its fun to read over coffee or while bored at work, and there are some decent posters, but overall the vibrant general board is pretty well a mess.
I happens...as a long-time lurker and now registered, it looks like the "android-forums" are leaching over. I just do not click on topics that seem to fit into this thread's category.
Yea, it has gotten old.

Please let me know the exact post count/contribution threshold that you have deemed appropriate for deciding whether or not a useless, off-topic post, belongs anywhere other than the Off-Topic board.
In fact, what I find most annoying, is people who have inflated egos and think that they are better and can decide who is a worthy contributor.

What's worse is a senior member not realizing that what the op is saying is completely true. You don't have to be here for a long time to know what's right, that's common sense.
If I was allowed to moderate this thread, just logging in once a night to delete/ move threads should be enough to keep it clean. Then, when I get tired of doing so, why not allow someone else to do it? Just a thought.

Never said anything about off topic posts, or even post count .....
But to make a thread like this is just as bad ...
But like any "community" you have different types of people, and unless the "majority" sees the problem then just whining about it does nothing but annoy the rest of us.
It is the old "If you are not part of the solution , you are part of the problem" stance, there are contact pages to send messages to the board owners/admins for this kind of thing.
This board has been here for a long time, and it was originally for people who were DEV's and People wanting to learn not for instant gratification.
I do agree that the "BS" threads are annoying, but does this thread not fall into that same category.

I have contacted moderators/admins.
But it comes down to what constitutes deletion of a thread. Like I said earlier, I started a topic in Q&A recently with a bug question. I solved my problem, but in solving it, another question arose. However my thread was deleted before I could even come back to check it again.
If my thread, after having my problem solved, was deemed unnecessary, then why not all these garbage threads, with no point or reason?
Well said op big +1 from this vib/xda user.

Mainly because this is a public forum, and yes they are annoying, and a lot of useless crap, but everyone has a right to post , UNLESS the "gods on high" deem it unworthy, not sure why your thread got deleted, did you ask for it to be, was it a double post...
Yet here as with life there is/are double standards, so again making threads whining about it, is about as annoying and as the "nonsense" threads.
Are people unable to NOT READ nonsense threads, someone twisting your arm making you go into them, does search not work for you.
You do realize that what keeps a lot of the "nonsense" threads up in the list is people going into them complaining about them, people going in and saying "delete this thread" every few minutes does not help anything except keeping it at the top.
Ignore them and they will go away ...
I agree. The general forum is no longer worth reading.
both sides of fence
hell i just got rick rolled in a froyo thread but my fault for reading the thread. but i see both sides of the argument if you get annoyed from what people post don't read, but there are those who do like to abuse their posting rights and post stupid stuff but the rick rolling i got to give them kudos haven't been rick rolled in like a year so, touche on that one but yeah i would like to see more legit posts from people and not just some stupid gag post.

You really can't control , or I say should not have to control, what and where people post, but you can control responses to those posts, if you ignore them , they fall off the radar, if you keep posting in them to complain they stay at the top.
Just as much as the people posting the crap , the people responding to the crap need some self control.
So again "if you are not part of the solution , you are part of the problem" .
but I agree, have not been "rick rolled" in quite some time, silly , useless , but still some funny stuff ....
I liked the shroom thread.

Not a lot going on in vibrant land lately so not a lot of relevant worth reading topics or posts to water down the spam and trolls.
Once rom development picks up the vibrant boards will be flooded with topics and posts by people who can't read or follow directions and have no reason to be mucking around with their phones in the first place and demand help for problems they can't describe in coherent sentences. Like every other part of the forum.
Hopefully the development out weighs all of these things, which is what kept me coming back with my G1 and MyTouch 3G. Just report the thread/post and move on. What more can you do? Feeding the trolls never helps.
it's just the world we live in. as technology becomes the norm for most kids growing up, there will always be a clash. back in 96 it wasn't this bad. Kinda like dealing with your little brother we'll just have to deal with it. The only help we can get is some decent moderation here but they are not willing to do their job. Oh, they are busy? Then why not get someone for free [people do it for free ya know] to moderate the damn place?

To the regs here in the Epic forums:

We seriously need to calm down and post in a civilized manner. I see far too many immature and unnecessary posts that only flame at other posts. There is no reason to tell someone they're stupid for posting something from an ignorant's perspective. If they don't know and they're asking, then politely point them in the right direction. No need to bash on them. Granted, there are some pretty stupid/idiotic questions asked here (some intended for trolling) but still, DONT FEED THE FIRE. Let it go, calm down, and post like they are right in front of you. DONT HIDE BEHIND THE INTERNET TO GET AWAY WITH DISRESPECTING OTHERS! It seriously gets old fast. Act like adults please!

i see nowhere on the general section (which, this kind of topic would be under) where this topic is mentioned. Because apparently, it seems like the Epic forums are filled with little high schoolers who think swearing is cool. Because honestly, it isn't.
BUT, if there is a thread requesting others to be more civilized, then I apologize.
Not this topic, but other topics. Sorry, I should've worded it differently.

+1. This forum has become unwelcoming and almost frightening to post a question within. People around these parts need to chill out.
ONe of the best threads I've read in a while. There are a lot of times where I see people as a question and instead of getting a simple answer they get a bash from someone. We all need to understand that nit everyone knows the same thing. What may be a dumb question to you is not to the op and other people that need to know too. If you have nothing better to do then flame people for their questions don't come on here. Go somewhere else. We obviously dont need you. Thanks

Replies are always "wow. You should've searched." Um...the xda app doesn't search. It fc's. And also, whosdaman likes to close general threads about people that wanna know thins about froyo or any other "GENERAL" question.
Not everyone is on these forums 24/7 to be knowing that updates that were announced weeks ago were suddenly canceled.
Not everyone is tech savvy enough to use odin.
Not everyone undertsands the differences between dk28 and di18.
If you're gonna respond by telling someone they should search before posting, why not give them a link to follow leading them to the appropriate thread? That way they can see "oh crap. I should search next time, cuz that's what I was looking for." Assuming they're not on the app, ofcourse.

And sometimes you follow the instructions and it just won't work for you. (I know, I couldn't get odin to work for me until I used a different cable.) I had lots of help down to step by step instructions. Without the help, I would still have a dead Epic.
I also second keeping thing civil. If we don't we will chase away a lot of good people and information.

I agree with the OP every bit.
And besides, at one point even the most tech savvy people were noobs. Everyone had to start somewhere, and asking questions is a good way to learn. Now the pointless questions are about the "delayed" updates Samsung promises. Although, there is no point to get into that once again. The search feature on the XDA app doesn't work, which is also not helpful to new members at all. I agree, just point them in the right direction, and move on, without the snotty attitude. It really isn't that difficult.
I'll be honest, I'm only 14, and I know better than to be rude or swear on the internet when someone isn't familiar with something new.

Why are general topic threads being closed?

I for one like the idea of a general topic thread, but I don't understand why someone that trolls is not banned or their comments removed instead of closing the thread.

I agree completely. I'm not trolling with that statement either.
Honestly, now that we have 2 mods another thread COULD be opened. The probability of conflict due to misunderstandings, differences of opinion and, perhaps for some, dislike of a fellow member or members is still pretty high.
XDA stands for something special. It's a community of people trying to advance its knowledge through helping and sharing. Sometimes egos, not excluding mine, get inflated and the perceived need to stand up for what one feels is right becomes too much to let lie.
Sometimes people just throw out bait to see who bites. These instigators are known as "trolls."
The latter is frowned upon, but not necessarily wrong, as long as things aren't pushed too far. The former, well, good luck with that one. Remember that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Doing something wrong just to do it is not ok. Doing something wrong because you feel you are fighting for something important is another story. There is the letter of the law, and the spirit in which the law is written.
Again, I'm honestly NOT trolling.
The few should not be allowed to ruin it for the many.
It would be a great day for our XDA community if our senior moderators would embrace this philosophy and push for this change.

I, for one am guilty of standing up for myself on here. Take it or leave it. I don't let stuff ride. I'm not here to get respect or gain popularity. I do all that I do for fun and to give back. I'm known as a cocky s.o.b but I'm also known to help a fellow member out as much as my knowledge allows. I've spent numerous hours on talk, pm's and email helping people out that just quite can't get it. The thing that just makes me mad is when you see plain stupidity in your face. For example, I've seen at least a dozen people ask "Where is the low mic fix?" when if the person would search or read back 5 pages you'd find the answer. Back when this Glacier thread started you wouldn't even think of asking a question in the dev section without searching at least 10 times and if you asked such a dumb question you would get reprimanded and issued a infraction and your comment deleted. If I would get on someone now, they'd call me names and blah, blah, blah and the poop tossing would begin. The other day I was speaking out against what I thought was unfair in the general section and I don't take back any of it but to have me censored while idiots actually crowd the dev section with questions really made me mad. I have a change of heart now because the moderators are now getting back to the days of old and doing something about the useless posts. +1 to them. Since we had lack of moderating for 6 or so months, the "noobs" that are now senior members think its ok to do what they do and that's when I'm on your ****. Love me, hate me, I honestly don't gaf....end of rant.

I completely agree with you, I think part of it is people want the cool new stuff without actually reading and learning a thing or two; while it's understandable that you may not have time to look things up, we say these things for the benefit of users themselves. Trust me, the benefits of looking up things on your own and asking after you feel you've searched your ass off are far more greater than just being told everything. Going from releasing a port, to building from source, to being asked by awesome to join team inferno and learning some github all within my first few months of developing on my first and only android phone; I'd say I'm pretty good proof of how effective doing a bit of research is (seeing as I had no prior knowledge on how to do ANYTHING but flash a rom). It's not like you're being asked to read a 700 page documentation on the android system... and although better moderation required us to lose our BS thread and possibly some infractions to some long-time users, it's good that we're starting to get that old sense of moderation back...
tldr; XDA isn't here to hold your hand (so don't assume it is), but if you put some time into reading and learning the benefits are basically limitless.

i agree. the stupidity around here is just amazing. take the most recent one i've seen for example. i'm not going to name any names, but you know who you are.
this guy comes around and posts a question in the General Section. that's already a mistake. who doesn't know that Questions go in the Q & A Section? and then, since he didn't get any answers, he ventures on over to the Development Section, literally picks a random thread, and posts his question there. his question has NOTHING to do with what the topic is about. completely unacceptable. and then, when another forum member tells him that he shouldn't do that, what does he do? he goes on calling names. hey man, it's not our fault you have no respect for others. all this person could've done was just SEARCH. Google it, Bing it, Yahoo it, i don't care, you could've at least SEARCHED before you asked. yeah okay, maybe if you had only a few post counts, then i would forgive you, but no, this is a Senior Member, with over 200 posts! things like this shouldn't even happen from such an "experienced xda user". and i'm seeing things like this more and more everyday, not just in in Glacier forums, but pretty much everywhere else. noobs come along with only a few posts, and they see that they need 10+ posts to post in the Development Sections. so what do they do? they spam all the other sections and threads until they get more than 10 posts, then they begin spamming the Development Sections with their stupid questions that could've been answered by a search. and that's not all. since they can't spam the Development Sections with under 10 posts, they spam the DEVELOPER'S PMS. i have over 1000 PMs in my inbox, i'd say over 3/4 of them are useless garbage asked by idiots who are too lazy to search.
now about the off topic threads:
i really like the idea, it's a great way for forum members to hang out and have friendly chats for one another, but one thing i had noticed going on in the old BS Thread was that noobs with less than 10 posts would come here and post until they get 10 posts. i actually even read some other posts that encouraged this action. so while the off topic threads are great, they also have downsides to them as well.
IMO, we should just make it that you can only post in the Q & A Section until you have a certain amount of posts, cause honestly, most of the first few posts are just plain stupid questions that can be answered, by a simple search.

I'm going to act like I didn't read that.
As for the off topic thread. I'll allow one of but once it gets hectic like the last one. *You know who I'm talking to* starting problems calling people etc, it's gone an infractions are handed out.
Yall decide in this thread, who will open it.
