My G2 just randomly yesterday started adding red lines and messed up colors to the screen, it's really hard to describe. I'll put up pictures later but it almost looks like the screen went to 64K colors? I've tried rebooting, flashing new ROMs, even in Recovery the android in the background has the same effect. So it must be something with the screen, anyone know what's wrong?
It sounds like the cable connecting the screen to the rest of the device is either coming loose or is damaged.

Nope... I was literally looking at it one second and it was fine, one minute later it was like that... I just bought it four days ago new and sealed off of eBay. Does HTC offer a manufacturer's warranty?

Anyone? Tried contacting HTC support but all I get is
"Sorry, but either the page you were looking for can’t be found or we are having a problem making it come to life.
You might want to check out our Site Map for a full list of pages available on this site"
after I try sending an email. Any help?
It looks like it stopped dithering or something... i'd try reinstalling the rom.

I am having the same issue with my Desire Z.
I'm wondering if it can be fixed without sending it back to HTC?
Well, both T-Mobile and HTC turned me away, saying I would've had to have gotten it from either of them to be able to be repaired. What do I do now?

HTC does do non-warranty repair, for a price of course.
Is there any chance the ROM(s) you installed were wonky? ie were you using a beta, nightly, or something else? which ROMs have you tried? I had this happen when I used a kernel that was incompatible with the ROM I had installed, which is why I ask. Flashing a standard/respected ROM after a wipe fixed it for me.

No, it's not a ROM, I've been on CM 7 RC0, CM 6 stable, stock Sense, and stock 2.2 and they all do the same thing, even in the recovery the background image has the same effect, so it's not a ROM issue.

It may be a defective ribbon cable for the display possibly a tear in one of the layers. I see this alot in phones I fix at work, and usually the only way to fix the issue is to replace the cable entirely. your only option is to send it out for warranty repair or buy the part yourself and do the fix.

I still have my phone under the manufacturer warranty and it has been acting wonky lately. I want a new vibrant and I am just wondering what is considered a defect? Im thinking about flashing back to stock and saying my GPS doesn't work, and also I have light leakage from LED buttons. Thanks.
what is "wonky" about it?
Maybe we can fix it... I don't like the idea of helping get a new phone, just for the sake of getting a new phone.
This (and other reasons) are why phone costs so dang much.

Exactly, if it is indeed defective then by all means get an exchange. But if it just running slow then it can prolly get fixed with a flash. I process so many warranty exchanges that in all honesty there was nothing physically wrong with it. A simply odin to stock fixes them.

And if you are willing to try, check my signature for going back to stock... files and a guide for you.
Random restarts, GPS still doesnt work at all, light leakage on buttons and screen. Ive tried numerous ROMs and I am still having issues with GPS. Ive went to stock and while it fixed my problems with restarts, stock was just to laggy so I went back to custom ROMs, GPS still doesn't work.
I am also having signal problems. Me and my friend bought a vibrant the same day and we have tested in the same room that his gets better reception. In a room where he has H, I am only on Edge. This isn't a problem with the ROM because we are both running Bionix.
If there is any way to fix my GPS/Signal issues then by all means tell me and I wont send my phone in for a replacement.
EDIT: Thank you guys for the help. Could ROMs effect signal/GPS? Like I said above when I compared with my friends phone under the same conditions (same room, same ROM) i was only on Edge and he had H. I've tried Trigger, MIUI, and CM7 and still don't have 3G or H in places my friend does.

Thank you for the input I'm glad you gave me some good information as to fixing my phone/getting a replacement.
ROMs COULD be a reason since they have different modems... but if you guys were on the same rom and didnt change the modem, then no....
I have best luck on KB1.
I would ODIN to JFD, root, Flash Trigger and see how your signal/gps goes... if not great, flash the KB1 modem over it (dev section) and see if any better.
If you look in my tips/tricks (first link in signature) there is a fix I do for GPS. Sometimes on a new ROM when it DOES NOT work, I have to do that to make it work. Other roms, it works right after flashing... no real rhyme or reason.
If you want a new phone, i am certain you could get one based off what you said already..... but I would not be surprised if you could make it 100% right.

not to mention the refurb you get could have the same problems or worse.

Hey guys,
I've got a new HTC Desire Z, its been purchased "off line" i.e. sold without any contract.
Anyway ive noticed sometimes it doesnt come out of stand by, so i done a factory wipe and have no additional software running.
Its still doing the same, i updated via the update option on the phone, that didnt help either.
I've searched old threads, tried most things, i was wondering if theres any new information on the matter.
If all fails ill take it back to the store, but i have no faith in them fixing an intermittant problem...how annoying.
If it's new why not just exchange it?

Not enough information.
Coming out of standby, what exactly is the issue? There are at least 2 different wake issues. Screen has trouble waking, but will turn on if you try enough times or open the keyboard? Or won't wake at all, unless you pull the battery and restart?
Where did you buy it from? Are you still within their exchange period? If so, they probably aren't going to repair, but just send a replacement, which is probably a good thing. If you aren't within the seller's exchange period, they probably aren't going to help you.
Were you fully stock and unrooted before updating?
You stated you tried "most things". What does that mean? We have not idea what that means if you don't tell us. Tell us exactly what you tried to do.
What country are you in? Keep in mind, if the phone was not intended to be sold in your country, you have no HTC warranty (which is normally good for 1 year), per their terms.
Hello,
My HTC EVO 4g keeps randomly restarting and when the phone is under heavy usage is reboots. I'm going to go into a Spring store today and try and get a new phone as I have the TEP plan.
I currently have CM7 installed on my device. When I bring it in to the Sprint store, should I have the stock ROM installed on there? Or does it not matter?
Thanks for your time and answers!

Well that would suck... you're going to end up getting a phone that cannot be rooted (for now) and won't be installing CM7. What you really should do is instal the rooted OTA and see if you can hack that for a couple of days first... If not, debate how long you can put up with the reboots.
Thanks for the reply, but at this point, I really just need a phone that works.
Playing games, surfing the web, or using Maps will restart the phone.
I just need to know if they won't take the phone cause it's been "rooted".
Just in root leave s off for someone in the future

Is anyone at the Sprint store going to freak out and not take the phone back if I don't have stock ROM?
It's ALWAYS recommended to unroot and return to stock before going into a sprint store. Yes, SOME people have gotten lucky and not got caught. But if you do get caught being rooted, they will flag your phone and you will NEVER get it fixed. It literally takes 5 minutes to unroot, just do it just to be safe.
On a side note, are you sure your problems aren't related to the CM7 rom you have? ANY custom rom will have problems. You should try flashing back to stock rom, or at least a Sense rom and see if you still have the same problem.
Okay, thanks for the advice!
Yes, I have tried other ROMs, and I still experience the issue. I've tried Fresh and will be flashing stock ROM to see if that helps.
I've gotten 3 replacements, I leave them s-off and they never check that. I do however flash a stock rom first just so they don't give me any sh*t. And I got lucky last week, my replacement phone came with 2.3 on it but it was s-off. You may get lucky too
We're comin from a pure power source.
Since you're going to be stuck on the stock ROM anyway if you replace it, you might want to first try installing the stock rooted ROM from here and run it for a few days.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133379
It's quite possible that something in your setup on CM7 is causing the phone to overheat. Or it could be any number of things that might have nothing to do with hardware. Before you give up a rootable phone for one that can't be, you might as well try the stock ROM first. If that clears things up, you can experiment to find the culprit.

EXACTLY! If you're having software issues and you're running a custom ROM, before even considering exchanging the phone you should revert to stock to see if the problem truly lies within the hardware itself or the ROM you are using. As far as unrooting, I would not unroot before taking it to Sprint should you have to resort to that. Just flash a stock rooted ROM and you should be fine.

Took phone to best buy, rooted with a custom rom on it. Think it was Fresh 4.2 or something I don't remember tbh.
Get phone back and it's all manufactured and has latest update.
From what I've read, no root for it yet.

Well, if we can get HTC to roll another small update out for us for the bad timezone and other small bugs... maybe they'll unlock the boot loader for us. :-D Send HTC saying your timezone is messed up. :-D

If it happens again, just buy a new speaker off eBay. They're really easy to swap out and cheap as hell. Just look on you tube for a walk-through.
not terribly worried about it. i plan on switching to the BB Bold 9930 when it comes out to Sprint in a couple months.
I got my Evo4g, because my previous job had hours upon hours of down time. So SNESoid and many other games filled that void and made my work day enjoyable. New job...can't even take my phone into the building, at all =( So all I need my phone now is just text and email. I could probably just get a dumb flip phone really. But I couldn't do that after having a smartphone for a few years now.

i jsut assumed it was a new phone, sticker under battery now says 'remanufactured' and the screen doesnt have the scratch it had before and the camera lens is brand new looking.

In my time lurking, I've seen multiple people say they sent back rooted phones to T-Mo and it went unnoticed. This made me wonder if they actually checked or not so I just wanted to know your opinions. I'm starting to think that you could probably get away with it if you just flashed a stock Gingerbread rom. I'm starting to find it quite amusing.
hope
I hope not, that way I will be screwed if something happens to the phone, i dont think I even have warranty to begin with.
If Tmobile are clever they most likely to do check it
I had a friend who bricked their G2 using some sort of visionary root and they were able to get a new one via warranty.
I have sent back several rooted phones to various different companies under warranty and got new replacement phones without any hassle every time... touch wood hope that continues...

Maybe if it is a software problem the repair company investigates further what happened to it?
