I have a verizon xv6800 and it only shows 19MB of free ram (in Running Programs). It also only shows 47.46MB total program memory and total 164.41 storage memory. I though it was supposed to have 64 MB total program memory and 256MB total storage memory?
some of each is used by the OS, memory issues with the phone have been known since day 1, alot of the custom roms help the ram issue by disabling uneeded services, you might want to look into those
I looked at some of those ROMs and they still show like 20MB being used when everything is closed (with about 27MB or so free). I guess my real question is why does it show my total at only 47MB ? vs 64MB? hidden useage by the OS? If so, then why is 20MB in used after a hard-reset? visible use by the OS ?
yeah, 47vs64 is hidden by the OS, used fro shell and other things you cant kill
20vs47 is other stuff, services, autorun programs, today plugins, etc
Hey i would suggest getting oxios hibernate/memory app. It really does help. Sometimes i go from 78% usage down to a 55% usage with one tap of the program. I currently am running at 49%, which is not bad at all.
But why do I start with 20 megs on a reboot...but can never get back to it...even after I close everything AND use oxios...Why are there 3 instances of the phone app running? Can't close em...
I NEVER get back to 20! This is really starting to piss me off.
I just flashed DCD's newest rom, and I got about 27.41MB. After installing about 10 apps (some and some aren't ram dependent), and now I have 24.84MB with a fresh soft reboot. Which, I think, is still pretty low, but it is definitely better then the VZW shipped version.
We have to face the facts. We got a very crappy set of software with our Titans from every provider. MS dropped a load when they saw all the complaints and the people leaving for the Iphones. A few lucky people have been fortunate enough to test our new verson of WM6 and so far everyone says its much faster and alot smaller. This phone has the most horrible hardware support on the market atm as well. This should be greatly improved with the next rom from HTC. Do not forget everything you put on your phone is based off of bad code and bad hardware support. Every mod out there is 2nd rate untill we get better stuff from HTC and microsoft. Bottom line is you have to wait for the new ROM.
Does anyone have any clue when the new WM 6.1 Rom will be out? I love my titan but my god its slow I am seriously thinking about defecting to an iphone just cause its faster.

You possibly could create a custom ROM and then change the Pagepool size. That should get you well over 20. I'm using DCD 1.6.10 Kitchen and changed the Pagepool size to 4MB. That increase available Program Memory to 27MB after a fresh install of the ROM.
having more memory on this phone will not make it run any faster or better. It becomes an issue only when you run out of memory running applications lie PIE, Opera, Picsel, ETC.
I'm running DCD's 1.6.10 Rom with my configuration and apps I have installed I still get 24.8 megs of ram free and I havent soft reset for atleast 24 hours.
hey all ~
I have the internal memory widget installed on my homescreen and it shows that i have used up 130 / 159 mb on my sprint Hero.
this morning, I had 126 mb used up
my text messages were acting REAL slow this afternoon, so i booted up the Flipz kitchen (0.2) and backed up/deleted my text messages. works great now. but that added more crap to my phone's memory
What I've done to my phone:
rooted under windows
loaded recovery img
flashed Fresh 1.1
have like 60 apps (I could get rid of at least 5 of em right away, prolly more)
176 contacts - w/ Facebook connect
loaded custom bootscreen - some nexus one / hero hybrid thing with sound
custom theme - ClearLock w/ Stock icons found on geekfor.me/kitchen/lockscreens/
I feel like my phone is running out of internal storage. Am i overracting? Is it actually okay? what can i do to free up some space? how long will this much space last?
I don't want to do apps2sd, it just doesn't seem like a good idea.
thanks all, and sorry if this is not really a problem!

I just wouldn't go below 10mb of free internal storage, otherwise you should be fine and any preformance issues you may be experiencing are most likely caused by one of the apps you have installed.
Also I remember hearing reports of the phone bugging out when it reaches over 70 apps. I'm not sure if that's still an issue but I'd tread that water slowly if you know what I mean.
prior to this phone, I had a blackberry that bugged out if i had too many messages displayed. I'm not worried at all about the SMS app slowdown
I just figured out what has been plaguing my Sprint Hero from day 2 that I got it. Apparently others have the same problem. You can only install a certain number of apps, before the device will start crashing on boot.
Is there a fix for this, beside having to flash a custom ROM?
thanks
sorry, wrong post
I don't think even ROMs fix it, the number seems to be different for everyone, some people can get to 100 others can barely get past 50. Are we sure its a limitation of the CDMA Hero and not just Android in general?
I've heard it was only Sprint Hero devices that have this bug.
I ran into the issue for the second time just last night. I heard the phone buzz behind me on the desk and when I looked, I saw that it had spontaneously rebooted itself. Upon starting though, just as what I've run into before, all core apps would FC.
Took the opportunity for some long overdue house cleaning and deleted a stack of apps that really aren't used and I'm back in business.
It's not really an app limit so much as an apk limit I'm not sire what the number is, but custom roms often remove a lot of unwanted apks raising the limit of apps before you experience the big.

Are you using apps2SD? If not then you are using the internal memory to store all apps and this memoery is not unlimited. Maybe you are going too low on internal memory and that's what's causing the crash.
Im running apps2sd and I had the problem the other day. I had approx 60 apps. When it happened I had about 37mb free on the internal memory and 3 gb free on SD
Does the same thing on custom ROMs and Kernels that I've tried. No idea what it is.

Well well..... that sucks...
Same issue
I am having the same issue and believe it has to be something within the hero causing this issue! I have used android since day 1 coming from the g1 and mt3g and I never had this issue and I have had as many as 150+ apps on both. Wiping the ext3 partition fixes it or removing a bunch of apps. My advice would be to invest in the paid titanium backup so that when your phone shuts of or reboots you can wipe ext3 and just have titanium restore back ups or remove unused apps.
I believe this may have something to do with either htcs hacks to Android or the 2.6.27 kernel for enabling cdma on Android 1.5.
I know this isnt helpful, but why would anyone need 50+ apps. Unless all you do test apps, there is no need. Heres a tip, delete the ones you don't use.
I used to have this problem when I first got the phone. I got all app-happy, especially with the free ones. It seemed that 70 was the limit. But I found out that problems really happened after installing too many at once.
I think the combination of rooting and rebooting every so often between app installs has allowed the system to stabilize itself. Right now I'm running Fresh 1.1 on the new Gumbo ram-hack kernal and my app count is at 95. I've got 21 MB free internal memory and the only thing that FC regularly is Swype. I've had warnings that I was low on memory at around 12 MB so I just unloaded a few apps. But even then it was stable.
Yeah, mostly it was a byproduct of me being in an experimental phase and lazy about removal.
Took me forever to decide on which music player (still not totally pleased), news widgets, etc. I just figured id play around then clean up when the 2.X comes out.
Is there a way to really see the sizes of the apps and tally them up to see if its a size cap for .apks? It might be interesting to see if there is a correlation.

There's a big thread on this over at androidforums.com i read a while back. If i can find it ill post it. No idea of thier solution.
odd, I've never had the issue. I've got over 80 apps, using apps2sd, and haven't ever had an error due to having too many apps.
it doesn't have anything to do with installing too many at once. I tried installing everything one by one, and still had the problem.
I think you can get to 95 now, because the fresh rom has fewer apk's pre-installed.
IIRC jmanley @modaco forums has figured out the total number of apks in /system/app /data/app and /data/app-private that the Hero will handle. It's not just the apps in /data/, it's the total number throughout the system.
He's a member here if the Verizon boys didn't drive him away completely in the Eris root thread.

I previously thought it was 186, but then I found 2 apks in /system/framework so I guess the total is 188.
Hello.
Right now I am on Cyanogen 4.2.15.1.
The biggest problem of G1 is imho lack of memory. I did every possible hack to make more memory available to my phone. I use compcache, 10mb hack etc..
I also tried swap, but it has been giving me some troubles and I find my phone working better without it.
I see everybody switching to 2.x roms and of course it makes me want to switch too although my phone runs pretty fine as it is now. But I would switch if I am convinced that things will improve. So here come the questions:
Did you experienced speed improvement by switching or it just runs the same/slower? (I am only interested in answers of G1 users as this is somehow a bit specific phone with the lack of memory)
My second question rose from my concerns of memory too. To use 2.x roms, one has to use DangerSPL, right? I am not sure about this, but I got the impression, that this one moves some of the memory from application runtime to rom space, so we can fit larger roms in. Does that mean, that in the end this rom has less operational memory for itself? Because that would be the exact opposite thing to what I want to do.
Thanks for the answers.
You as many others are confusing persistent storage with ram.
Ram is fast but will not store data over a reboot.. the amount of ram on the dream remains the same regardless of the spl/radio/rom (with maybe an exception of the 10mb hack that borrows 8mb from video ram for general use)
The persistent storage slow and is what danger spl changes.. this is the equivalent of your hard drive on a computer.
In the case of danger spl it significantly reduces the temporary space (cache) and increases both the core system storage (system) and the user space storage (data) this allows more on internal phone storage instead of the sdcard, having your core apps not using apps2sd is likely to increase perceived speed.
Since the memory (ram) is unchanged and the new kernels are better at memory management there is potential for newer versions to support more tasks at the same time than the older versions. (We are not there yet but cm-5.0.8-test4 and cm-4.2.15.1 seem similar in behavior in terms of what can be done with the ram avalible)
As for upgrading that's your choice.. in general on the dream anyway I don't recommend going to cm5.0.7 and related roms if you have not already done so.. and I never recommend a test version if you are not looking to be a tester. So I'd wait till cm5.0.8 final and related roms are pushed if you feel it's time to upgrade.
Otherwise if you are on a stable 1.6 rom that fills your needs and want to keep a very stable phone.. there is no need to rush the upgrade.. at some point you will find something that requires you to upgrade to 2.1 and will be glad it exists as it will improve the usefulness of the phone.. and I'm sure the stability of 2.1 will only improve over time.
Thank you for your answer.
I of course understand the difference between ram and persistent storage (rom?). The information I missed is that the additional memory is taken from the cache. Someone somwhere here posted something that implied that it reduces ram. Hackery!
Thank you for clearing that up. What are consequences of having less cache? Is this not a problem then?
You got my point with stable 1.6. I do not want to flash new rom every week and prefer stable working phone. The ONLY thing I was hoping for is the better memory management and maybe the whole rom footprint in ram, leaving more room for apps instead of system. I am running apps2sd but I think the main source of sluggishness of my phone is that apps are too often removed from ram by dalvik.
So I was hoping for something like " Yep, 2.1 is 50mb in ram instead of 80mb of 1.6 and you will have more free memory." That would make me switch. Having the same amount or even less makes no sense for me. I see no killer 2.x feature that I need to have so far.
Same amount of ram with both spls as I said. No 10mb hack on cm5 because the gpu is used for system operations
Cache is mounted as /cache and as I said contains temporary and cached data.. As designed its intended as a staging area, which will usually persist across reboots but may not under certain situations.
No performance impact ought to exist due to the resize. If too many things are attempted to be saved here you will get out of disk space errors.. but 30mb is plenty for the staging operations required by the system during normal operation.
As you may know: Linux never has "free" memory.. but reclaimable memory.. the reason for thus is anything read from persistent media is put into "disk cache" in case its needed again.. if the memory is needed for something else it will be freed at no/little cost, but if the cached files are needed they wont be reloaded thus saving the time reading disks/SD/flash.
(Thus why devs cringe when people show the output of free.. 'cat /proc/meminfo' will give full detailed breakdown of memory use if you qknow how to read it)
I am Linux guy myself, so I know how it manages the memory. Anyway, 10mb hack was a huge thing for me, can not live without it.
That pretty much means I am staying and 1.6, thank you for your time.
I'm running Myn's warm 2.2. The thing that really gets me is I have 41.94 mb available. I could fit dozens more apps.
Is there any way I can change when that stupid low memory thing go's off. I would like to change it to something more reasonable like 10mb.
Did you do a full wipe before flashing your rom....you should have way more space than that....
Sent from my rooted evo using the xda app....if I helped you, please click Thanks!
I did a full wipe when I flashed my rom like three weeks ago. It's low because of apps. It's just it seems like that annoying notifaction shouldn't op up when I have that much space
Im all stock and had the same problem after i got a furbed phone from sprint. Was werid, I actually DL 4 apps and then said the same thing and then deleted all of them and STILL said it!
I had the same problems on several roms I found most of the space was taken either by the address book storage, or calendar storage clearing that and let it re sync solved the problem. I would recommend also going with roms that have the delvik cache moved to the cache partition that gives you about 80 megs more space. A few of the developers out there have that tweak.
Tips to increase available storage aside, I really wish there was a way to turn the notification off or adjust the threshold. To me, 10% is too high. You can still do plenty with 41MB left.
Yeah, I got that the other day. I bought a Class 10 16 GB card so I can do apps2sd. *sigh*...too many apps.
running ava Z1 and i still have 231 MD free
Do a full wipe & manually restore everything, it'll do more than just a dalvik & cache wipe which only seems to free up a few MB of internal storage.
Tedious but a healthy habit.
I had the same issue....check out the thread

This is a refurbed phone I got a month or so ago. I do have way more than 4 apps though!
Just today when I updated my apps I got a bunch of insufficent space errors, with 40.89mb's free. Are there any apps that I can use to check how much space is left besides settings-sd+phone storage.
you will seriously find all this information in the thread i posted, it's not very long either

I think your link is broken. Doesn't work when I click on it.
Why not download App2SD from the market place and move some of your apps to the SDCARD. This will free up space from your phone's internal storage.

Thanks for fixing the link! I'd actually read that before. My contact storage is a whopping 3.7 mb yours was 157mb. You fixed yours by chopping your contact storage by chopping your contact storage way down and switching completely to a apps2sd.
I don't really think that that is the solution, in your thread there was a guy running cm 6 that got down to 12mb left. I can't get down below 40mbs without getting insufficient space errors. It seems like there must be a setting wrong somewhere.
What I recently did was installed Dark tremors a2sd on my phone. It actually moves all your apps to sd and frees up so much memory. It's frickin awesome. First you have to partition your sd card if you haven't already. To do so you must first create a backup of your sd to your computer as prtitioning will wipe the sd. Also I only now how to partition the sd using Amon RA recovery, it's much easier than using clockwork. Partition up to ext3.
To find Dark Tremors flashable zip go here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...hlight=apps2sd
I'll tell you what, if you cant figure out the rest, PM me and I will give you my number to help walk you through it if you need. Good luck.
BTW, I'm also using Myn with about 95 apps and have 227mb left in my phone.
did you check out the app that lets you explore the "app usage" on your phone. It should help you figure out what is eating all the memory.
I think you are probably going the wrong direction in terms of just trying to lower the low space threshold or get rid of the warning. 40mb will dwindle further and further until it creates other issues, and there is TONS of space on the evo, you need to address the low space issue, not the notification.
Use that app and browse through your internal storage, if you cant figure out whats eating up your space i *highly* recommend you root and install darktremors a2sd. I hate messing with my phone and trying to do that kind of stuff and i really had no problems when i finally caved and did it, it was all pretty simple and the instructions are laid out well.
